1901-1902 – Wood begins to experience a lack of sensation in his left foot. Numbness and cramping spread from his foot to ...

In March 2009, PLoS introduced a new program to provide “article-level metrics” on every article. Article-level metrics provides relevant data on each article to help you determine the value of that article to you and to the scientific community in general.
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has scheduled the last update for Ovid MEDLINE for late November. As in past years, the NLM will discontinue updates in order to make the transition to the 2010 version of MeSH®. However, the MEDLINE In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations updates will continue through the full reload process.
NLM is expected to complete their reload in mid-December. We will keep you informed on the progress of the 2010 edition of MEDLINE.
If you currently have an AutoAlert saved on OvidSP for MEDLINE, watch for your next AutoAlert after the reload is complete.

Due to the budget challenges facing the library, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the following publications for 2010. We based the decisions on a review of usage data and journal citation data using the ISI Impact Factor. Please keep in mind that our excellent document delivery services can get any article you need, often within a day, from another library. Please see our Request Materials pages for more information. You can also easily place an interlibrary loan request using Yale Links.
If you have comments or questions, please contact either your Library Liaison, or Daniel Dollar (Head, Collection Development and Management), daniel.dollar@yale.edu.

With this recent update from the University, the Medical Library must reduce its collections budget by an additional 5% during the current fiscal year (FY 2010). You will recall that the Medical Library reduced the collections budget by 10% for FY 2010 in July. This additional 5% reduction will result in further journal and database cancellations and decreases in book and other print materials purchases. We will continue to handle these cancellations and purchases judiciously, considering the following:

The center, which is slated to be complete by June 2010, has been spear-headed by Dr. Dennis Spencer, the Harvey & Kate Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery, and was made possible by the g...

If you have a Library printing and photocopying card you should know that on July 15th, 2009, CCP Solutions, LLC. will replace Copico as the vendor that manages the Library’s public printing and photocopying operations. CCP Solutions will honor Copico cards at printing and copying pay-stations until September 1, 2009. After that date the cards will not work in the Library. Unused balances on Copico cards will not be reimbursed by the Library, Copico, nor CCP Solutions.
Therefore we advise that you:

Only purchase or add credit to a Copico card if you strictly need to.
Do not add a large amount of credit to your current Copico card.
Try to wait until July 15, 2009, when yo...

For the first time since the Office of Student Research and the Medical Library started the collaboration to produce Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library, this year gives the student submitters the task and obligation to upload a PDF copy of their completed thesis (hopefully in one piece, watch this video for Word 2007 or watch this video for Word 2003 to see how to make a document with different page section sequences), along with a text version of the abstract and other important descriptive information.
Take a moment to try PubMed’s new Advanced Search. You can find the Advanced Search link right next to the query box.
It is important to become familiar with PubMed’s Advanced Search because in the very near future the tabs for Limits, Preview/Index, History, Clipboard, and Details will be removed from the basic PubMed pages. History, Limits, Index of Fields, and a link to Details are available from the Advanced Search screen. A link for the Clipboard appears to the right of the search box on the PubMed screen when the Clipboard has content.
Give it a try!

The Medical Library recently updated its collection of audio visual equipment that is available for loan. Two new compact digital cameras may be checked out for a 3 day loan period by patrons. Pictures and short movies are recorded on a removable 2GB memory card and the camera also has a USB port for direct connection to a computer. As before, the cameras are checked out from the Circulation Desk in the Medical Library. There is still time to capture the Fall foliage! (Source: CWML Blog)

This is the first time that library has offered extended hours of service in the month of October. This new arrangement is a direct response to feedback we received from students in February. Please contact John Gallagher (john.gallagher@yale.edu) with feedback regarding this, or any other, library service.
Due to security concerns, it is no longer possible to access online resources from IEEE through the medical library proxy server. This restriction covers all databases, journals and ebooks from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Remote access to these resources is available through the Yale VPN. Onsite access to these resources remains unchanged.
We hope to reinstitute access in the future when all security concerns have been addressed. If you any questions about the change in access, please contact Mark Gentry at mark.gentry@yale.edu, 203-7852163. (Source: CWML Blog)

UpToDate, the popular clinical reference tool, has recently added the capability of linking to the Yale Library’s collection of fulltext journal articles. All journal articles cited in UpToDate and indexed in PubMed contain a link to our “Yale>Links” service. Instead of the distinctive YaleLinks logo you’ll see “View the full text of this referenced article” on the detailed citation view. Clicking on this text will lauch the YaleLinks search and direct you to an electronic version of the article where one is available. If no electronic fulltext exists, YaleLinks will facilitate access to our print collection and Interlibrary Loan requests.
The addition of links to original, peer-reviewed publications is a significant enhancement to this clinica...

There have been many medical textbooks whose editions have long outlived their original author, but none has had as long a history and is as widely known as Gray’s Anatomy. Originally published in 1858 under the title Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical, this text was a collaboration between surgeon/anatomist Henry Gray and his friend Dr. Henry Vandyke Carter, both on the staff of St. George’s Hospital in London. Vandyke Carter left for a medical career in India in 1858, while Henry Gray died three years later at the age of 36, yet their textbook lives on 150 years later, soon to appear in its 40th edition under the title Gray’s Anatomy. The publishing history is much more complicated than the current publisher’s celebratory chart would indicate. From 1859 through 1985, American edit...

Tired of lugging around a lot of heavy medical books? You can now keep library materials you wish to consult, but not necessarily borrow, on designated Reading Shelves in the Medical Library!
The Reading Shelves allow patrons to keep library materials in one convenient location to use for ongoing research. Patrons benefit by no longer having to check out a large number of books and transport them back and forth to the Library.
For more information about the Reading shelves, ask any Circulation Desk attendant at the Medical Library. (Source: CWML Blog)

Faculty Survey Reveals High Rating for the Medical Library.
The results of the 2006-2007 Yale School of Medicine Faculty survey were released in February 2008. The work-life survey asked faculty to rate their overall satisfaction with working at Yale and resources in support of their work. According to the survey, 92% of faculty members reported satisfaction with library resources.
The survey was commissioned by the Office for Academic and Faculty Affairs at the Yale School of Medicine and developed by the Office of Institutional Research. The survey was administered to all School of Medicine ladder faculty who were appointed prior to January 1, 2006. Data was collected from late October 2006 to early January 2007.
We are replacing our old Macs with brand new 20” iMacs. They have larger displays, faster processors, SuperDrives (burn CDs and DVDs), and the newest version of OSX, Leopard.
Six iMac Research Workstations were deployed recently. During the last week of February we will be replacing the 6 logon “Productivity Macs” on the Information Room round table and 3 Productivity Macs in the Computer Resource Lab. Productivity Macs have MS Office 2004 and EndNote X.
Please contact a member of the Library Staff if you encounter any problems with the new computers or if you have questions about using them. We welcome your comments and suggestions. (Source: CWML Blog)

A new law requires public access to research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The new NIH Public Access Policy replaces a voluntary system put into place in 2005. Beginning on April 7, 2008, researchers will now be required to deposit electronic copies of their peer-reviewed manuscripts into the National Library of Medicine’s online archive, PubMed Central. Full texts of the articles will be publicly available and searchable online in PubMed Central no later than 12 months after publication in a journal.
Information and instructions about submitting NIH funded research papers can be found at http://www.nihms.nih.gov/web-help/index.html, or contact your department’s library liaison if you have additional questions . (Source: CWML Blog)

In December, the Medical Library retired the databases used to power the library’s ejournals and ebooks pages. Maintaining the accuracy of these databases was labor-intensive and became unsustainable as the number of online journals and books continued to increase. The same information was also being managed in the Library Catalog (Orbis) and SFX Link Resolver (Yale Links), creating additional inefficiencies as library staff attempted to keep all three systems up-to-date.
The ejournals and ebooks pages now pull data from Orbis and Yale Links. The improvements in data management and accuracy have resulted in the loss of some search and display functionality. The library has formed a project team to address these search and display issues through building new resource discovery tools whi...

Currently, the National Library of Medicine (NLM®) is working on its MEDLINE global data reload. The reload, which occurs annually, allows the NLM to update the controlled language MeSH® thesaurus and make other updates to the database fields. While this maintenance is being performed, no new records are added to MEDLINE.
Ovid has scheduled the November Week 2, 2007 as the last update for 2007, which will happen November 21.
Since the data is not being loaded by the NLM, AutoAlert searches in MEDLINE will not be generated by Ovid. AutoAlert searches will commence once Ovid receives and processes the new data. The search results generated at that time will include all new data added since the previous update.
You will continue to receive AutoAlerts that run in either PREMEDLINE alone ...

You might have wondered about this mysterious link:

It’s the new Ovid interface!
The ‘Try OvidSP’ link will be on every page in Ovid and will take you to the new interface.
The current version of Ovid (Gateway) and the new OvidSP will be available simultaneously until February 2008 and then Ovid Gateway will be retired. Take this opportunity to become familiar with the new interface. But don’t worry, all Ovid accounts, searches, and alerts will still be available through OvidSP.

Dear Faculty and Research Staff,
Thank you for your review and recommendations as we evaluate our electronic resources for retention and/or cancellation. A critical review of the collections ensures the resources we acquire are meeting the research, patient care and education missions of the Medical School and the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. As you know we have moved to an online environment and receive few print journals. This evaluation ensures we are acquiring the electronic and print books, journals, clinical syntheses resources, and computer assisted instruction materials necessary for your work.
If you have any additional requests for materials please contact Daniel.dollar@yale.edu or your department library liaison.
Sincerely,
R. Kenny Marone

Funding has been received from the National Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health by the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library to determine the healthcare information needs of nurses who work in Connecticut schools, and to develop resources and training that match those needs.
Librarians spend a great deal of time thinking about how to provide resources and services in anticipation of the information needs of library users. Without fully understanding the information needs of any group, the result is to offer library services and information sources that Librarians perceive are the users’ needs when in fact that may not be the case. And this is no different for the population of nurses that work in schools.
For that reason the purpose of this project funded by the grant is to de...

The Medical Library’s budget has been unable to keep up with rising costs of electronic books, journals and databases. The cost of electronic resources continues to rise precipitously, increasing 117% over the last 3 years. In spite of many cost-saving measures, the library is now forced to cancel many resources, including ejournals, to stay within its budget. We are carefully weighing journal rankings and usage and price data to earmark resources for cancellation. You can view a list of titles at: 2008 Journal Cancellations
We welcome your comments and questions.
Note that the library will continue to provide free delivery of journal articles, usually within 24 hours, via our document delivery service. (Source: CWML Blog)

Dear Faculty and Research Staff:

The Medical Library is committed to buying the best resources to support the clinical, educational, and research missions of the Yale-New Haven Medical Center, but our budget has been unable to keep up with rising costs. The transition from print to electronic books and journals has impacted all library budgets. The electronic versions are much more expensive, since they are priced to compensate the publisher for the individual print subscriptions which will be cancelled. The library provides access to Yale University and the Yale-New Haven Medical Center, which saves Yale departments and faculty money, but places a huge burden on the library as the cost of eresources continues to rise precipitously. Spending on electronic resources increased 117% over the...

Due to escalating costs, the Medical Library and the Science Libraries are no longer able to subsidize article charges for Yale faculty in BioMedCentral publications. Yale authors have a high acceptance rate and the costs keep increasing.
The Medical Library and the Science Libraries joined BioMedCentral in 2003 to support the concept of “open access” (OA) publishing which is dedicated to making research freely available electronically. The libraries also had the option of subsidizing article charges for Yale authors in BMC publications and chose to fund Yale authors for 100% of the article charges.
The libraries’ BioMedCentral membership represented an opportunity to test the technical feasibility and the business model of this OA publisher. While the technology proved acceptabl...

These moulages of prominent Yale Medical School faculty members, including departmental chairs and deans, were created in the 1950s by William Lawrence, dental surgeon and member of the Department of Surgery. They are life masks. Dr. Lawrence had his subjects lie down and he used a liquid film, otherwise used for impressions of teeth, over their faces. This layer was followed by gauze and a coating of warm plaster. Straws were inserted in the subjects’ nostrils to enable him to breathe. To counteract the uncomfortable nature of the procedure and to help the subjects relax, Dr. Lawrence suggest...

The Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library is an institutional repository begun in 2003 for student theses produced at the Yale School of Medicine. Since 2006, all deposited theses from each graduating medical class are available in PDF format on the Yale campus network, and most student authors have granted open access so that other students and researchers beyond Yale can apply and extend clinical and research knowledge. Processing of the class of 2007 theses is taking place this summer. Because of the Open Access Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) harvests locations from open access repositories on the web, these Yale theses are being discovered in indexes such as Google Scholar, Scirus, and ScientificCommons.
