Hemangiomas of the external auditory canal: a literature review and two new case reports

Conclusion: Cavernous hemangiomas are rare lesions of the external auditory canal.
In the morphological diagnosis, computed tomography of the temporal bones is the leading diagnostic procedure, along with
otoendoscopy and endocranial magnetic resonance imaging which are important in evaluation of the spread of the lesion. Biopsy
of vascular lesions is not recommended. Complete surgical excision of hemangioma of the external auditory canal is the therapy
of choice with a minor risk of hearing impairment.

Different decision tree induction strategies for a medical decision problem

Abstract The paper presents a comparative study of selected recognition methods for the medical decision problem -acute abdominal pain
diagnosis. We consider if it is worth using expert knowledge and learning set at the same time. The article shows two groups
of decision tree approaches to the problem under consideration. The first does not use expert knowledge and generates classifier
only on the basis of learning set. The second approach utilizes expert knowledge for specifying the decision tree structure
and learning set for determining mode of decision making in each node based on Bayes decision theory. All classifiers are
evaluated on the basis of computer experiments.

Abstract Children with malignancy present an important alteration of the immune system functionality caused by the illness itself and
by the therapy they undergo. Therefore, they are at high risk of contracting vaccine-preventable diseases and of developing
important complications. Vaccinations represent valid devices against these infections but this condition involves two main
problems: are vaccines safe in these patients? Are vaccines effective in these patients? The aim of this review is to discuss
the principles of vaccination management in children with cancer.

Abstract The aim of the research was to evaluate the results of NDT-Bobath method in gait re-education of adult patients after ischemic
stroke using normalized parameters of gait. The investigation group consisted of 60 patients, all sufferers of an ischemic
stroke, and participated in a rehabilitation program: 10 sessions of NDT-Bobath therapy through 2 weeks (ten days of the therapy).
Normalized parameters of gait were calculated based on anthropometric measures of patients and their gait parameters (gait
velocity, cadence and stride length) measured in every patient on admission (before the therapy) and after the last session
of the therapy to assess rehabilitation effects. Results among patients involved in the research were as follows:

Abstract The implementation of new markers of bacterial infection into clinical practice is hindered by their costs. We assessed the
potential use of the neutrophil to lymphocyte count ratio (NLCR) to discriminate between bacterial and viral infections. NLCR
was evaluated in 45 patients with bacterial infections: 24 patients with viral infections and 18 healthy adults. The medians
of NLCR were 11.73 in bacterial infections, 2.86 in viral infections and 1.86 in controls. The NLCR cut-off value of 6.2 exhibited
a sensitivity value of 0.91 and a specificity value of 0.96 for bacterial infection. These results suggest a diagnostic potential
for NLCR.

Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the musculoskeletal manifestations of mucopolysaccharidosis VI and to assess the effectiveness
of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with recombinant human arylsulfatase B on the bone and joint involvement in a patient
with a severe phenotype of the disease. Before the initiation of ERT, the patient presented with significant range of motion
(ROM) limitations at multiple joints. Flexion contractures were noticeable in all joints. After 48 weeks of ERT, improvement
in active and passive shoulder flexion, as well as passive elbow and wrist flexion, was noticed. ROM improvements were reflected
in patient’s enhanced self-care.

Abstract Verrucous carcinoma is a slow growing, well demarcated, exophytic variant of squamosus cell carcinoma with a characteristic
verrucous presentation. It is a rare tumour and in 75% of cases it is localised in the oral cavity, and sporadically within
the tongue. HPV infection is identified in 40% of patients. Good prognosis is characteristic for this tumour, since the 5-year
survival is 93%. The authors describe a case of verrucous carcinoma localised in the tongue of a 62-year old patient. The
clinical course, diagnostics and proposed treatment was described and discussed with the existing literature data.

Abstract The authors present the case of a girl with Frasier syndrome that was diagnosed at the age of 4 years. At 3.5 years, she was
diagnosed a steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome associated with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. The girl presented with
female phenotype and male genotype (46XY) as well with gonadal dysgenesis. Genetic analysis confirmed the +2T>C mutation in
the intron 9 of the WT1 gene. She developed end-stage renal disease at 14 years, culminating in renal transplantation. The
liver biopsy revealed a post-transplantation lymph-proliferative disease.

Abstract Informed consent in today’s medical practice has become a cornerstone and a routine ethical component playing a major role
in forming a therapeutic alliance with the patient. The present study sought to analyse the effectiveness of the consent forms
and the consenting process in Otorhinolaryngology. This three month questionnaire-based study covered varying operations which
ranged from tonsillectomies, grommet insertions to pharyngeal pouch stapling. Twenty-nine percent of consent forms were signed
on the day of the operation. Of the patients who received leaflets (51%) during the process of informed consent, a majority
(88%) found it useful. The respondents were satisfied with the explanation of the procedure, benefits and complications (70–74%).

We present a rare case of acute abdomen
due to rupture of ovarian metastatic malignant melanoma seven years after removal of a primary cutaneous malignant melanoma
lesion, followed by reexcision of the cicatrix and axillary dissection (Clark III, Breslow IV), one year after osteoplastic
parietal craniotomy for removal of recidiv metastatic lesions, and excision of the cutaneous malignant melanoma lesion on
the upper leg were performed. During laparotomy because of acute abdomen, 4 L of free liquid (blood and ascites) were evacuated.
The right adnexal mass was loose tumor, size 110x75 mm, with rupture on the posterior wall and hemorrhage. Unilateral adnexectomy
was performed. Pathohystologic evaluation revealed tumor cells with eosinophilic, clear cytoplasm, intracytoplasmatic melanot...

We present a 42-year-old female admitted for a 4 month history of increasing pelvic discomfort and pain. Clinical examination
revealed a large tumor obstructing the vagina. Tumor markers (CA 125, CEA, AFP and CA 19-9), white blood cells and biochemical
tests were all within the normal limits. Pelvic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging scan confirmed the presence of a
large retroperitoneal/pelvic mass. The tumor was surgically excised and pathohistologically diagnosed as a well differentiated
leiomyosarcoma, staged IB. Six years after surgery the patient is well and disease free.

Abstract Non-invasive measurement of intracranial pressure (ICP) reduces the complications and cost for both patient and health care
systems. Improvement of non-invasive methods has led to development of systems for reproducing continuous, real-time non-invasive
ICP signals. So far, non-invasive methods have been tailored for the patients with head trauma. We have used Schmidt’s auto-adaptive
method to assess the accuracy of this method for patients after surgery for supratentorial brain tumors. Data from forty patients
with the diagnosis of brain tumor operated from 2008 to 2010 were used to estimate the accuracy of Schmidt’s method in our
patients. We obtained the model parameters from 30 recordings. We determined the ICP wave form for the remaining patients

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop and validate a linguistically and culturally appropriate version of the Edinburgh Postnatal
Depression Scale (EPDS) for use with women attending antenatal care in Romania. We translated and tested a Romanian version
of the EPDS (EPDS-R) in four hospitals in three Romanian cities: Cluj-Napoca, Satu Mare, and Sighetu-Marmatiei. The study
population included third-trimester women attending antenatal clinics (n=418); 364 subjects were included in the analytic
sample. We used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) as a “gold standard”. We assessed reliability,
validity, and conducted sensitivity analysis to establish an EPDS-R cutpoint. We found that reliability was robust (α=0.89)

in the adolescent population in Lithuania. The cross-sectional study done in 2008–2009 in Lithuania. 1806 students aged 13–18
years from randomly selected schools were questioned (response rate 95.8%). Logistic regression analysis results show that
musculoskeletal complaints in adolescence are associated with duration of computer use as related to age and gender. Compared
with adolescents using computer <2 hours daily, a statistically significant probability of experiencing back pain was determined
for younger boys and girls groups (13–15 years) who reported working on a computer >4 hours (OR=2.36 and OR=2.50, respectively)

It was the aim of our study to assess whether implant therapy might improve OHRQoL. We consulted patients with at least one
Astra Tech implant. Each patient completed oral health questionnaires, which were then statistically evaluated using the Wilcoxon
signed-ranks test and Analysis of Covariance from a functional and aesthetic point of view. Differential response on individual
scales was assessed using multivariate approach. All twelve marginal Wilcoxon tests showed an overall improvement in OHQoL
(α = 0.05). On the aesthetic scale, OHRQoL was found to be associated with marital status, aesthetic reasons for undergoing

Abstract Erysipelas is a bacterial cellulitis usually associated with Streptococcal infection. It may appear as a complication following
mastectomy and radiotherapy for breast cancer. The study involved 17 cases of erysipelas of the upper limbs with a median
age of 62 years. Here we described the clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of erysipelas. Our results indicated
that the erysipelas appeared with an average of 9 years after mastectomy and was recurrent in three patients (17.64%). It
is associated with obesity in 42% and arterial hypertension in 52.9% of patients with breast cancer after radical mastectomy.

Abstract The principle of symmetry-asymmetry is widely presented in the structural and functional organization of the nonliving and
living nature. One of the most complex manifestations of this principle is the left-right asymmetry of the human brain. The
present review summarizes previous and contemporary literary data regarding the role of brain asymmetry in neuroimmunomodulation.
Some handedness-related peculiarities are outlined additionally. Brain asymmetry is considered to be imprinted in the formation
and regulation of the individual’s responses and relationships at an immunological level with the external and internal environment.
The assumptions that the hemispheres modulate immune response in an asymmetric manner have been confirmed in experiments on
animals. S...

Conclusions. A few but significant differential
predictors were found distinguishing Panic-agoraphobic patients, social phobics and those suffering from GAD from one another.
There are only few specific predictive risk factors evident as essentially differing within anxiety syndromes.

Abstract The prevalence of insomnia is greater in end-stage renal disease. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of insomnia
and subclinical insomnia in patients with various dialysis therapy and kidney transplant recipients, in order to assess the
severity of insomnia and examine whether there is a difference in severity among groups. In cross-sectional study, we evaluated
120 patients with terminal renal failure. Based on therapy, patients were divided into four groups: hemodiafiltration, standard
bicarbonate dialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant recipients. The severity of insomnia was evaluated through
the use of the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Most patients who reported any kind of insomnia problems with ISI were on conventional

Material and methods Analysis covered a retrospective group of 334 neonates (194 male neonates and 140 female neonates), reported to the Polish
Registry of Congenital Malformations (PRCM), between 2001–2005.

Results The frequency of the occurrence of the urinary tract anomalies was 1.7/1000 in live newborns. No significant differences have
been found between the boys and girls, regarding the duration of the pregnancy, birth weight and the occurrence of the individual
urinary tract anomalies. The anomalies of the renal pelvis and ureter (0.74/1000 in live newborns) were most frequent. It
has been found that 9% of their families were diagnosed with urinary tract anomalies; occurring more often in girls’ families.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine influence of selected lifestyle factors on kidney cancer. The study brings data from
two centres of international multicentric hospital-based analytical observational case-control studies. Data were obtained
from a group of 300 patients newly diagnosed with kidney cancer (ICD-O-2 code C64) and 335 controls from two centres in the
Czech Republic. Results showed that smoking increased OR to 1.09 (95% CI 0.77–1.55) and 1.06 (95% CI 0.73–1.52), but the results
were not statistically significant. Obesity (BMI⩾30) created adjusted OR 1.71 (95% CI 1.11–2.66) and 1.44 (95% CI 0.91–2.28),
showing a minor, statistically insignificant, effect of obesity on the development of kidney cancer. For hypertension, adjusted
OR was 1.7...

We present three different cases of patients with papilledema: one case with a primary tumour of the optic nerve, and two
cases with secondary involvement of the optic nerve (breast carcinoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma). The visual acuity varies
from sudden, painless, decrease of vision, to blurred vision and proptosis on the affected eye. A characteristic ophthalmoscopic
examination shows a swollen optic disc and promonence with tortuosity of blood vessels. A fluorescein angiography shows dilated
capillaries of the optic disc with leakage in the early phase and diffuse hyperfluorescence during the late phase. A ultrasonography

Abstract Quality assurance becomes an increasingly important part of clinical medicine and of the field of endoscopy. Endoscopic sphincterotomy
is associated with a fairly high complication rate. We aimed to assess our quality of sphincterotomy for benchmarking by using
a prospective electronic database registry, and to identify potential risk factors for post-interventional complications.
Over 2 years, 471 sphincterotomies were performed in a single tertiary referral centre. Patient- and procedure-related variables
were prospectively recorded with the support of a multi-centre international sphincterotomy registry. Multivariate analysis
was performed. The overall post-interventional complication rate was 9.3%. Pancreatitis happened in 5.5%, bleeding in 2.1%,

We present our experiences with 4 pediatric cases of allergic contact dermatitis
induced by henna tattooing and give a brief review of the literature. The agent responsible for contact allergy was proven
to be PPD in 3 patients, and in one patch testing revealed positive reactions to PPD and benzocaine, as well as to wool alcohols,
nickel sulphate and potassium dichromate, to previously used hair dye—all being of clinical relevance.

Abstract Only a few studies reveal immunological changes in breast milk after the intake of probiotic and none focus on secretory IgA
(sIgA). The aim our report was to investigate the levels of sIgA in human breast milk and stools before and after 4 weeks
of probiotic intake in a patient with ulcerative colitis (UC) and a control. The study included 2 lactating women: 1 with
UC and 1 control. Both received daily 3.75 billion viable Lactobacillus bulgaricus for 28 days. SIgA was measured in breast
milk and stools before and after the probiotic intake. The concentration of sIgA in breast milk before the probiotic intake
in UC was 408.5 vs 137.4 µg/ml in contol. Fecal sIgA in UC was 420 vs 274 µg/ml in control. After 28 days of probiotic intake there was a decrease in breast...

containing chlorhexidini digluconas were effective and may be a safe, non-specific alternative to antibiotic treatments. Promising
results from some clinical studies can have different mechanism of action as disinfection.

We describe improved nonoperative treatment of patient with
posttraumatic pancreatic pseudocyst with somatostatin analogue. A 9-year-old girl was admitted to our hospital after blunt
abdominal trauma with handlebar. Three weeks after abdominal trauma, pancreatic pseudocyst developed. Nonoperative treatment
of posttraumatic pancreatic pseudocyst (the largest dimensions 70 × 55 × 65 mm) with somatostatin analogue, octreotide acetate,
was applied for the next 52 days. The patient was followed up for 24 months after the discontinuation of octreotide and there
were no recurrence of pancreatic pseudocyst. Somatostatin analogue could be usefull in the nonoperative treatment of posttraumatic
pancreatic pseudocysts in children.

Jejunogastric intussusception as complication of gastric surgery

Abstract Intussusception in adults is a very rare entity that occurs in only 5% of all intestinal obstructions. Most often, in 66%
of cases, intussusception is localized to the small intestine, while jejunogastric intussusception is very rare and occurs
in 0,1%. Since the first case of jejunogastric intussusception after gastrojejunostomy was described by Bozzi in 1914, fewer
than 200 isolated cases of postoperative intussusception after gastric surgery have been reported.

Here we present a case of anterograde jejunogastric intussusception, 15 years after radical subtotal gastrectomy with Billroth
II anastomosis in a 71-year-old man.

We present a case involving a patient with normal liver function tests from whom we removed a giant common bile
duct stone measuring 7.5 centimeters × 4.0 centimeters × 4.0 centimeters. Postoperatively recurrent common bile duct stones
were observed and removed with an endoscopic maneuver in the three-year follow-up period. Recurrent bile duct stones are frequently
reported in the case of large size of stones or multiple stones. Surgical treatment may then be considered as a first-line
treatment in cases of recurrent common bile duct stones. When an endoscopic or surgical approach is used for the treatment
of giant common bile duct stones, careful observation is of the utmost importance and treatment innovations may be necessary.

Abstract We are reporting the case of severe methemoglobinemia resulting from Almagel which was given for treatment of gastrointestinal
ulcers after pancreatoduodenal resection. A 64 year old man was treated with Almagel A postoperatively. One day after treatment
began, the patient reported what appeared to be cyanotic discolorations of his lips and fingers. (SpO2 80%, normal pO2). Two days later, the patient was diagnosed with methemoglobinemia via co-oximetry and treated with methylene blue. The causes
of methemoglobinemia remained unclear, and Almagel A was reinitiated until the second episode of methemoglobinemia, was diagnosed
and treated promptly. The dose of benzocaine in Almagel A (100 mg/5 ml) was sufficient enough to cause methemoglobinemia,

We present a case of chronic Q-fever, complicated by myocarditis/pericarditis,
where patient’s initial signs, symptoms and laboratory findings (i.e., protracted fever, oligoarthritis, erythema nodosum,
positive antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, monoclonal gammopathy) seemed to suggest an autoimmune disease. We also review
the literature for autoimmune phenomena associated with Q-fever.

Abstract An episiotomy is a surgical incision through the perineum made to provide sufficient area for the delivery of the infant.
About 10 to 95% of women who deliver will have episiotomy depending on which part of the world they are having delivery.

Too early episiotomy causes extensive bleeding and too late episiotomy causes the excessive stretching of a pelvic floor and
lacerations could not be prevented.

According to widely accepted arguments, there are many benefits of episiotomy for the neonate: prevention of injuries, shoulder
dystocia and mental retardation of the infant. Benefits for the mother are: reduction of severe lacerations, prevention of
sexual dysfunction, prevention of urinary and fecal incontinence. But those things could also be complication...

Abstract Primary adrenal lymphoma (PAL) is an exceedingly rare disease. Because of its rareness, uncertain etiology, variable duration

Here we report a 50-year-old male patient with primary bilateral adrenal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. He was treated with
surgery followed by combined chemotherapy using R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone).
He achieved complete remission after 3 cycles of chemotherapy. At present, he is considered free of tumor at 3 years after
chemotherapy. Our case report demonstrates that patients with primary bilateral adrenal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma may

Abstract Currarino syndrome was first described as a triad by Guido Currarino, an American radiologist in 1981. It is an autosomal
dominant hereditary disease known by the triad of anorectal stenosis, anterior sacral defect, and a presacral mass that is
most often an anterior sacral meningocele.

We represent a 3 year boy with refractory constipation from birth, which had been wrongly diagnosed and treated as Hirschsprung’s
disease since early childhood. The patient underwent urgent colostomy because of water intoxication due to bowel irrigation,
and following investigations (CT, MRI) revealed anorectal anomaly and presacral mass compatible with Curarrino’s syndrome.

Abstract Fragile X syndrome is caused by dynamic mutation of FMR1 gene CpG island CGG repeats. The underlying mutational mechanism is not fully understood. Different microsatellite markers
and SNP have previously been reported as markers associated with FMR1 CGG repeat instability. The aim of the present study was to identify specific haplotypes among Latvian FXS patients and the
control group with respect to allelic stability. Eleven male FXS patients and 122 control male patients participated in the
study. In total, 27 different DXS548-FRAXAC1-ATL1-FRAXAC2 haplotypes were found. The prevalent haplotype in the control group
was 7-4-A-5+ (rel. frequency 0.327). The prevalent haplotype associated with the FXS group was 2-2-G-4 (rel. frequency 0.818;

We report a case of orbital non-Hodgkin lymphoma initially
diagnosed as Graves’ disease. A 65-year-old woman was admitted to the Department of Endocrinology with a diagnosis of a left
eye tumor. On admission, apart from the tumor, exophthalmos and the upper eyelid proptosis were present. The lesion had been
observed for two years before hospitalization. Due to the muscle infiltration, as detected on computed tomography scanning
and magnetic resonance imaging, Graves’ disease was suggested. The thyroid function was normal. Further diagnosis performed
during hospitalization revealed lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. Lymphoma may manifest as a localized orbital tumor without extraorbital
or constitutive symptoms. Rare orbital diseases, among others lymphoproliferations, should be taken in...

Abstract Although the significance of osteoporosis is well known worldwide, the number of patients undergoing therapy for this disease
corresponds to a fraction only of the optimal proportion. In many countries, patients at a high risk of fracture — including
those who have in fact sustained a typical fracture — do not receive therapy at all. Unawareness of the population, difficulties
in accessing specialist care, as well as insufficient communications all contribute to the fact that a substantial percentage
of patients discontinue drug therapy prematurely. Using information from a survey conducted in a club of osteoporotic patients,
this paper discusses the achievements and substantiates the existence of patient associations, as well as emphasizes the need

Abstract Ten years ago, a 73 year-old patient presented at our unit with a right nephritic colic and elevated serum creatinine (2.1
mg/dl). This was the first time that the patient had consulted for a urology workup. An abdominal X-ray was performed in which
we observed a severe bilateral nephrocalcinosis with right ureteral lithiasis. One of the causes of nephrocalcinosis is distal
renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), in that sense the patient presented metabolic acidosis (pH 7.25) together with normopotassaemia
(4.4 meq/L) and normochlorine (105 mEq/L). A 24-hour urine test detected citrate (55 mg/dl), calcium (12 mg/dl) and pH of

mice were fed with a low protein (4.3 %) diet both before and after being challenged orally with actively growing G. duodenalis trophozoites. It was observed that malnourished mice had a greater severity and longer duration of Giardia infection compared with renourished mice. These malnourished mice also had less body mass but higher cyst and trophozoite
counts. Malnourished mice infected with Giardia had significantly decreased level of total serum proteins, albumin, globulins, hemoglobin, leukocyte, and differential leukocyte

The aim of our study was to investigate platelet aggregation in a group of patients suffering from preeclampsia. In a cross-sectional
study blood samples were taken from 89 hospitalized patients in the third trimester of pregnancy: 38 were suffering from mild
to moderate preeclampsia and 51 patients were without preeclampsia. From the blood samples platelet aggregation, secretion
of adenine nucleotides from platelets, concentration of energy-rich adenine compounds and levels of cyclic adenosine-mono-phosphate
and cyclic guanosine mono-phosphate in platelets were measured. In the patients with preeclampsia, the adenosine diphosphate

of AD patients.

By swabbing affected body parts (hands, legs, face, neck or trunk), 241 samples were collected from patients with AD (132
children and 109 adults), and as controls, 40 samples were taken from healthy individuals (20 children, 20 adults).

Abstract Paclitaxel is isolated from the Pacific yew. It can be obtained from the European yew, but only after chemical modification
of the isolated compound by a semi-synthesis procedure. The procedure for total synthesis of paclitaxel is very complicated,
involving multiple steps, and the yields of paclitaxel are meagre. This substance is also a metabolite of certain kinds of
fungus. The microbiological pathway for producing paclitaxel compared with isolation from plant material involves shorter
procuction times but a small yield. Cyclodextrins are usually used for improving the solubility of paclitaxel in aqueous media,
with polymeric and other substances added. Paclitaxel has anticancer activity and use for preparing the formulations intravenously
administrated to pati...

Abstract Due to the increasing number of infections related to injecting drug use, both the pattern of hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission,
and the circulating genotypes in Europe have changed. As there are little available data in this respect for Romania, the
aim of our study was a preliminary analysis of the distribution of HCV genotypes circulating among injecting drug users (IDUs).
Of the 45 IDUs evaluated (86.7% men, mean age − 27.6 ± 3.7 years, mean age at first drug use − 17.5 ± 3.9 years), 88.9% presented
anti-HCV antibodies, with higher rates in those with an injecting history of more than 10 years; 57.8% of the subjects had
detectable HCV viral load. Only 6.7% had markers of chronic hepatitis B infection, and none had anti-HIV antibodies. While

Abstract We conducted a 10-cM genome-wide linkage scan in two extended pedigrees, ascertained from two diverse Dagestan genetic isolates
with high aggregation of major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicides. Using genome wide multipoint parametric linkage analyses
with short tandem repeat markers, we found two previously undetected genomic regions with significant linkage in isolate #6007
with LODs=3.1–3.4 at 2p13.2–p11.2 (and some signal in same region for #6008) and in 14q31.12–q32.13. We also obtained suggestive
evidence for linkage with MDD at 9q33.3–q34.2 (#6008), 13q31.1–q31.2(#6007), 11p15(#6008), 17q25.3(#6007) and 19q13.31–q13.33
(#6008). Five regions (1p36.1–p35.2, 2p13.2–p11.2, 17q25.3, 18q22 and 22q12.3) demonstrated at least nominal linkage in b...

We report a 71-year-old male with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) who developed sudden-onset, progressive, bilateral visual
loss associated with a relapse of MPA symptoms. The patient was referred to our hospital, and treated with intravenous pulse
steroid therapy and high-dose oral prednisolone. Although the right eye remained vision deficient, visual acuity in the left
eye recovered. Ocular manifestations of MPA are quite uncommon. This case emphasizes the necessity of early detection and
initiation of prompt therapy where ocular manifestations of MPA occur.

Abstract Organophosphate pesticides are known to induce oxidative stress and cause oxidative tissue damage, as has been reported in
studies concerning acute and chronic intoxication with these compounds.

Our objective was to investigate the activities of brain antioxidant enzymes and malonyldialdehyde, as well as the level of
carbonyl groups, in rats sub-chronically intoxicated with chlorpyrifos at doses of 0.2, 2 and 5 mg per kg of body weight per
day. It was found that chlorpyrifos induces change in brain antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and
glutathione peroxidise, but to a different degree in comparison to proper control values; however, the elevated antioxidant
enzymes activities failed to check lipid and protein peroxidation in the brain...

Abstract Lung cancer is mainly a lifestyle-associated disease with poor prognosis and the lowest five year survival rate of all types
of cancer. Lung cancers are divided into two main groups: small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Surgical treatment is generally indicated in cases of early stage NSCLC, and those patients treated with radical and aggressive
surgery have a somewhat better survival rate. The main problems with lung cancer treatment are due to late diagnosis, rapidly
developing drug resistance and side effects of the treatment that are experienced by almost all patients. The next step for
distinguishing histologically complicated lung cancers and determining optimal treatment strategies is gene expression analysis.

Abstract The melanocortin system plays a pivotal role in the regulation of appetite and energy balance. It was recognized to play an
important role in the development of cancer-related cachexia, a debilitating condition characterized by progressive body wasting
associated with anorexia, increased resting energy expediture and loss of fat as well as lean body mass that cannot be simply
prevented or treated by adequate nutritional support.

The recent advances in understanding of mechanisms underlying cancer-related cachexia led to consequent recognition of the
melanocortin system as an important potential therapeutic target. Several molecules have been made available for animal experiments,
including those with oral bioavailability, that act at various checkpoints of the...

We present the case of a 20-year-old man referred to the clinical geneticist because of mental retardation and dysmorphic
features because of concerns about hereditability when his older, healthy brother was expecting a child. Deletion of proximal
3q arm was found with standard G-banding, and array comparative genomic hybridisation (array-CGH) was used to further locate
the breakpoints. A unique interstitial deletion del 3q13.11q13.33 was confirmed. The first clinical symptoms in the 20-year-old
were described at the age of 4 months when the pediatrician reported muscle hypertonia of the lower limbs, which later evolved
into hypotonia. Later clinical observations revealed that the patient’s psychomotor development was delayed: he exhibited
craniofacial abnormalities, cryptorchidism...

Abstract Withdrawal-emergent adverse effects of antipsychotics are an infrequently identified condition which can appear during antipsychotic
dose reduction and medication change. In this paper, we present the case of severe extrapyramidal symptoms after a dose reduction
of risperidone is presented. A patient, 23 years of age, was admitted to a health care facility due to an unexpected change
in his behavior, with paranoid delusions, incoherent thinking, and significant anxiety. An initial risperidone treatment was
soon changed to zuclopenhixol. Subsequently, severe extrapyramidal symptoms appeared, after which the medication was switched
back to resperidone. Following this treatment, the patient left the health care facility and stopped the medication of his
own volition....

We examined the frequency of the alleles encoding
methionine and valine at codon 129 in DNA isolated from 100 skeletal remains of individuals who lived between 10th and 13th century. Our results confirmed significant alteration in previously studied alleles frequency between the populations of
medieval Polish Lands and contemporaries. The calculated frequency of the alleles in medieval Poland (51% as compared to contemporary
65% for 129Met, and appropriately 49% vs. 35% for 129Val) implies a selection process that shaped 129 Met-Val distribution
profiles in the Middle Ages. We suggest that the study of the genetic relationship between past and present-day populations
could be a useful tool to follow allelic composition of particular genes (here: of the PRNP) over a span of time which ...

Abstract Apparent hematological symptoms rarely dominate the clinical picture of an underlying non-hematological malignancy. Malignancy-associated
eosinophilia can result from clonal or non-clonal proliferation of eosinophils. Here, we report the case of a 59-year-old
man with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung with an unknown primary tumor site, which presented as hypereosinophilia, anemia,
lymphadenopathy, weight loss, and malaise. Bone marrow biopsy disclosed metastatic adenocarcinoma positive in immunohistochemistry
for cytokeratin 7. Further assessment of specimens obtained from the bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsy of the mediastinal
lymph nodes confirmed the diagnosis of the metastatic lung cancer, although the primary tumor site remained undiscovered.

In this study, we examined the relationship between the dimensions of the ductus arteriosus (diameter,
length, capacity) and sex. We analyzed a total of 223 fetuses, 108 males and 115 females, ranging in age from four to eight
months of intrauterinal life. All fetuses of normal karyotype were obtained from spontaneous abortions. None of the analyzed
specimens demonstrated any visible malformations. The increase in the length and diameters of the ductus is linearly related
to gestational age. The volumetric growth of this vessel was dependent on fetal age, according to the exponential function.
The large number of analyzed specimens allows reliable determination of the ductus arteriosus dimensions in consecutive months
of fetal life. The data obtained could be of prognostic value duri...

We report a case of an apparently well-documented indapamide-induced hyponatremia. The initial diagnosis was made on the basis

expectations, prompted us to look for another aetiology leading to the final diagnosis of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic
hormone secretion (SIADH) complicated by indapamide treatment.

This study was performed to identify the T-cell receptor Vβ repertoire and HLA-Cw genotype in
twenty Mexicans of two different ethnicities with severe chronic plaque-type psoriasis. HLA-Cw typing was performed to detect
the allele pattern by SSP-PCR. In parallel, RT-PCR and Western blot were used for the identification of the TCR Vβ expression
in peripheral blood cells. We identified a variety of HLA-Cw alleles in this group of patients distinct from the widely known
HLA-Cw 0602 Caucasian allele. Moreover, TCR Vβ-2 and Vβ-7 clone-type frequencies were different and statistically significant
(P = 0.0280). We speculate that because of diverse genetic backgrounds, the susceptibility to disease and activation of T-cells
for a proper immune response could be specific; therefore, the f...

We report on two cases of spontaneous pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium, in one case associated with pneumorrhachis,
occurring in two children suffering from the novel influenza H1N1 virus infection. At the admission both children presented
with fever, violent dry cough, dyspnea and tachypnea. Radiological studies showed sizeable pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium
in both patients. One of the patients also a pneumorrachis. Children were initially treated by intravenous broad-spectrum
antibiotics, antipyretics and a cough sedative. Oral Oseltamivir (60 mg twice daily for 5 days) was administered after the
diagnosis of influenza A (H1N1) virus infection. Patients’ clinical condition quickly improved and children were discharged

Abstract Genetic variations of the antioxidant enzymes may influence the susceptibility to oxidative stress and consequently the development
and progression of diabetic complications. The aim of the current study was to test the association between the −262C/T polymorphism
in the catalase gene promoter and carotid atherosclerosis in Slovenian patients with type 2 diabetes. Two-hundred and eighty
six diabetics and 150 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Carotid atherosclerosis was quantified ultrasonographiocally
by carotid intima-media thickness (CITM), plaque score and plaque type. Genotypes were determined using the real-time PCR.
Fibrinogen concentration showed a borderline statistically significant difference due to catalase genotypes (p=0,05). No difference

We describe a case of nosocomial encephalitis
and concurrent cerebellitis associated with Enterococcus faecium in a man, with extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, who underwent high-dose chemotherapy and autologous
peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Brain magnetic resonance images showed lesions in the bihemispheral cerebellar
cortex with swelling and several small lesions in both cerebral hemispheres. The blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures were
positive for vancomycin-resistant E. faecium. Vancomycin-resistant E. faecium can cause encephalitis and concurrent cerebellitis in an immunocompromised patient who underwent autologous peripheral blood
stem cell transplantation.

Abstract Metastatic tumors of the pituitary are uncommon and usually asymptomatic. They are often incidental findings from imaging
workups for other medical issues or from the assessment of primary tumors in other locations. Diabetes insipidus is the most
common symptom resulting from pituitary tumors, including pituitary metastases. A 56-year-old woman with primary lung adenocarcinoma
underwent video-assisted thoracic bilobectomy. Regular follow-up was unremarkable until 15 months after surgery, when she
presented with polyuria and polydipsia suggestive of diabetes insipidus. A pituitary mass was found on brain magnetic resonance
imaging; the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma metastasized to the pituitary was confirmed by trans-sphenoidal surgery and

needs during medical treatment. In today’s society, this image of the medical profession has been substantially changed. The
present paper aims to examine medical career choice motivations and preferences of choosing speciality, in the light of current
social and economic changes in Hungary. The study was carried out by using a voluntary, self-administrated, questionnaire
among first-year medical students and resident doctors in four medical faculties in Hungary. The career choice motivations
of the first-year medical students and resident doctors are similar and match to the traditional health profession career
choice motivations. ...

Abstract Apelin (AP) and leptin (LEP) are adipokines with vasomotor actions. Taking into account the published data on the role of
obesity in the development of pulmonary hypertension, we studied the implications of apelin on leptin relaxing effects on
isolated rat pulmonary arteries. LEP had vasodilatatory effects on phenylephrine-precontracted rat pulmonary arteries from
normal and ovalbumin-sensitized rats, but not on rats with monocrotaline-induced pulmonary hypertension. AP13 pretreatment
increased LEP effects by one-half. Our studies revealed the existence of synergistic favorable effects of these adipokines
on pulmonary vessels.

Abstract Ascariasis is a helminthic infection of global distribution, and intestinal obstruction is its most common gastrointestinal
complication. This is a case of a 7-year-old boy admitted to Pediatric Surgery because of intestinal obstruction caused by
ascariasis. On admission, the patient presented with colicky abdominal pain, bile-stained vomiting and meteorism. On physical
examination, the patient was thin, pale, and dehydrated. An abdominal examination showed distention and diffuse tenderness.
After admission, the patient had fecal vomiting and expulsion of worms through the mouth. Laboratory-test results showed leucocytosis,
eosinophilia, hypoalbuminaemia, and hypochloremia. Abdominal radiographs and ultrasound studies were indicative of small-bowel
obstruction due...

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and predictors of alcohol consumption among adolescents in one town
in Central Serbia. A questionnaire was used to obtain data from 191 Serbian students aged 18 years regarding personal experience
with alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking, along with sociodemographics data. Alcohol consumption was reported by 97.4%
subjects, with 34.9% having the first experience with alcohol at the age of 14 years or less. Binge drinking (the intake of
five or more drinks at one sitting) was reported by 37.8% subjects. Significantly higher consumption of beer (p<0.0001) and
spirits (p=0.03) was observed in boys. The most common reason for both initiation and continuation of drinking, regardless
of gender, were celebr...

This study investigates the incidence of temporary and permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) and possible risk
factors for patients with different types of thyroid gland diseases. 1224 consecutive patients who underwent thyroidectomy
for treatment of various thyroid diseases between the years 2001–2005. The rates of RLNP were evaluated. The surgeon and type
of thyroid gland disorder were recognised as possible risk factors for RLNP. The incidence of temporary/permanent RLNP for
the whole group was 4.5/0.8%. The rates of temporary RLNP for groups, classified as multinodular goitre, Graves’ disease,
thyroid cancer or Hashimoto’s disease were 4.3%, 4.3%, 5.2% and 5.7%, respectively. The rates of permanent RLNP for the same
groups were 0.4%, 0.9%, 1.6% and 1.9%, respecti...

Abstract Rapid prototyping (RP) is a technology used to produce physical models. The RP application is applied in the medical field
to build anatomy models from high resolution multiplanar data such as Computed tomography (CT). CT of a female patient diagnosed
with hip dysplasia was obtained prior to surgery. Specific software was used to prepare the physical model of the patient
and was produced using fused deposition machine. Pre fused deposition models (FDM) were given to the orthopaedic surgeon to
plan for the dysplastic hip dysplasia. The patient was scanned again using CT after surgery and a post model was produced.
The outcome of the surgery was seen clearly by viewing the post model. Orthopaedic surgeon commented on his experience of
using the models for the hip dy...

Abstract Mucoceles are common pathological lesions of the oral cavity, usually measuring up to 10 mm. The authors describe a case of
deeply located buccal mucocele measuring 35 mm in diameter. The lesion was caused by facial injury in a 54-year old man. The
lesion persisted for approximately 2.5 years and was difficult to diagnose because of its unusual size and atypical clinical
symptoms. Preoperative ultrasonography excluded a tumor, and this was confirmed by histopathological examination. However,
oncological alertness was considered necessary on account of ulcerated mucosa next to the lesion. The mucocele was removed
through surgical excision, using a scalpel and tissue scissors. No recurrence was observed in 2.5 postoperative years. It
is stressed that histopathologic...

Abstract Generally, it is assumed that heart-rhythm disorders during hypoxia result from the interplay between the autonomic nervous
system (ANS) and the direct effect of hypoxia on cardiorespiratory structures of the central nervous system and on the myocardium.
Circadian variability in the ANS may substantially influence the electrical stability of the myocardium, and thus it is associated
with the preconditioning protective mechanism. We designed our study using anaesthetized Wistar rats (ketamine/xylazine 100
mg/15 mg/kg, i.m., open chest experiments) to evaluate the effect of preconditioning (PC) induced by 1 to 3 cycles (1 PC–3

We report the diagnostic evaluation, management, and intermediate-term outcomes of a rare variant of bladder cancer and concomitant
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. A 62 year old male with gross haematuria and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm was admitted to our hospital.
Cystoscopy revealed a large bulky mass occupying the posterior bladder wall. The tumor was transurethrally resected and its
histology showed a Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Due to the aggressive behavior of the tumor and the risk
of aneurysm rupture, concomitant endovascular exclusion of Aneurysm, total cystectomy with urinary diversion was performed.
12 months after radical surgery the patient was alive without any local recurrence, distant metastasis, and thrombosis of
iliac axis. To our knowledge this study is...

is a rich source of free fatty acids and may contribute to local inflammatory load by increased synthesis of inflammatory
cytokines. Direct passage of bioactive molecules into the coronary arteries due to close contact with the vascular wall and
the lack of fascia may contribute to the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease. Direct correlation between visceral fat

Abstract In addition to its known classical roles, the renin angiotensin system (RAS) has more subtle functions which include the regulation
of emotional responses. Previous studies regarding the anxiety related behavior of RAS have showed controversial results.
There is also evidence that oxidative stress accompanies angiotensin II infusion, but the role of AT1/AT2 specific receptors
is not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of central angiotensin II receptor blockers on anxiety state
and oxidative stress. Behavioral testing included elevated plus maze, while oxidative stress status was measured though the
extent of a lipid peroxidation product (malondialdehyde-MDA) and the specific activity of some defense antioxidant enzymes
(superoxide dismutase-S...

for colorectal cancer (CRC). Data of 57 patients diagnosed with CRC and treated in the Department of Surgical Oncology in
Gdansk in the years 2002–2006 were retrospectively analyzed. Clinico-histopathological data were analyzed using chi-square
tests. The effect on long-time survival rates was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival probability estimates. Identification
of the SLN was performed using the blue dye staining method. All regional lymph nodes were subject to standard histopathological
examination. Additionally in 32(56.14%) patients whose nodes were found negative for metastases on standard staining further

blood during 6 months and showed signs of cardiac failure. Several years previously, the patient underwent surgical removal
of cystic lymphangiomas from the left ovary, both fallopian tubes and small intestine. A chest radiograph showed an 8-cm round
shadow located in the middle lobe. A computerized tomography (CT) scan of the chest with contrast verified the existence of
a cyst in the anterior mediastinum. The radiologist suggested that the cyst could have originated in the pericardium. One
small cyst also appeared in the projection of the left cardiophrenic sinus. A CT scan with contrast of the patient’s abdomen
showed multiple cystic formations in the liver, spleen, kidneys, and left parapelvic region. A fine-nee...

Abstract A 64-year-old man with a history of gallstones, common bile duct stones, chronic hepatitis B virus infection, and hepatic
cirrhosis with a Child-Pugh score B was satisfactorily treated for hepatocellular carcinoma with radiofrequency ablation and
transarterial chemoembolization. His course, however, was complicated by gallbladder actinomycosis 14 months after treatment,
resulting in acute cholecystitis. Such a chain of events suggests that gallbladder actinomycosis may develop after radiofrequency
ablation and transarterial chemoembolization in patients who are known to have gallstones and that asymptomatic gallstones
should be treated before the application of nonsurgical, but invasive procedures for hepatocellular carcinoma.

We describe a 52-year old lady who presented with progressive abdominal distension
and computerized tomogram scan of the abdomen showing two pathologies; uterine and right renal tumour. It was initially thought
to be two distinct tumours (double pathology). Radical nephrectomy and total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy
was performed concurrently. Histopathological evaluation of the uterine and right renal tumour however surprised us with a
rare form of metastasis from a renal tumour to the uterus. The method of differentiating primary renal cell carcinoma with
uterine metastasis, from primary uterine carcinoma with renal metastasis, via immunohistochemistry, is described.

in CT colonography. The in vitro effects of hyoscine and drotaverine on tone and contractility of SM preparations isolated
from different areas of human colon were studied by isometric registration of contractile activity. Both medications have
a relaxing effect on SM preparations and inhibit their spontaneous contractions. The drotaverine-induced effects were reliably
more marked than the hyoscine-induced ones. CT colonography was performed in 70 patients who were injected with equal doses
of either hyoscine (n=32) or drotaverine (n=38). The degree of drug-induced distension in both groups was determined by measuring

Abstract Cervical cancer morbidity and mortality in Lithuania is one of the biggest in the European Union. The main risk factor of
cervical cancer is human papillomavirus (HPV). The deletion of the HPV E2 gene influences HPV DNA integration into the cell
genome, as well as a rapid progression of cervical lesions. The purpose of this study is to determine HPV, its types, and
HPV 16 integration in different grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CIN). 253 women with cytological lesions were
involved in the study. After a histology, 31 women were diagnosed with CIN I, 35 with CIN II, and 51 with CIN III. The biggest
prevalence of HPV infection was detected in women younger than 25 years old (69.7%) and in women with CIN II (90.9%). HPV

Abstract RNA interference is a technique that has become popular in the past few years. This is a biological method to detect the activity
of a specific gene within a cell. RNAi is the introduction of homologous double stranded RNA to specifically target a gene’s
product resulting in null or hypomorphic phenotypes. This technique involves the degradation of specific mRNA by using small
interfering RNA. Both microRNA (miRNA) and small interfering RNA (siRNA) are directly related to RNA interference. RNAi mechanism
is being explored as a new technique for suppressing gene expression. It is an important issue in the treatment of various
diseases. This review considers different aspects of RNAi technique including its history of discovery, molecular mechanism,

Abstract In search of biological marker in multiple sclerosis (MS), total-tau and phospho-tau (Thr181) concentrations were established
in CSF and serum of 78 patients with MS, using commercially available kits. Serum and CSF concentrations of IgG, IgM, and
albumin were assayed simultaneously to calculate quotients and indices of intrathecal synthesis. Serum t-tau detection was
strikingly low (23.1%); therefore, this factor was excluded from further analysis. Serum p-tau levels did not correlate with
any of indices or quotients. Unexpectedly, CSF t-tau and p-tau showed an inverse relation with MSSS and EDSS, which has not
been published elsewhere. Our results do not support utility of serum t-tau and p-tau as surrogate markers for MS.

Abstract Early diagnosis of osteoporosis and estimation of subjects that are at high risk for fracture, is neccesary for osteoporosis
treatment. Dual-energy X-ray absorptometry (DXA) is a modern method for bone mineral density (BMD) evaluation. However, along
BMD, clinical risk factors may significantly influence fracture development. Therefore, FRAX algorithm was designed for the
assessment of a ten-year risk for serious osteoporotic fractures (SOF), as well as hip fractures. In the current study, we
tried to evaluate the possible lumbal spine and hip BMD influence on ten year risk for SOF and hip fractures and potential
role of FRAX in predicting the therapy in postmenopausal women with osteopenia. We performed the study on 385 postmenopausal
women. According to the DXA ...
