Abstract Pressure ulcers and falls are frequent adverse events with negative impacts for hospital patients. Guidelines recommend risk
assessment as the first step in prevention. Care dependency correlates with falls and pressure ulcers and the Care Dependency
Scale showed a diagnostic validity comparable to that of specific risk assessment tools. The aim of this study was to establish
a simple and valid screening index for the risk of falls and pressure ulcers in hospitals by using the Care Dependency Scale
and to evaluate this index within two validation samples from different countries. Quantitative, cross-sectional data from
two German surveys and one Dutch survey were analysed. A total of 305 Dutch and German hospitals with 21,880 patients took
part. The diagnostic val...

Abstract Anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection commonly affects men who have sex with men (MSM) and is associated with the development
of anal cancer, with the highest prevalence in MSM who are positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The purpose of
this study was to determine the prevalence of anal HPV infection and genotype distribution in Slovenian MSM and its correlation
with behavioral patterns in order to predict the possible impact of quadrivalent HPV vaccine in this population. To our knowledge,
this is the first study of prevalence and genotype distribution of anal HPV infection in MSM from any of the Eastern European
countries. The study included 136 MSM who visited two outpatient offices from January 2007 through December 2008. All participants

Abstract The aim of this study is to determine the difference in efficiency of direct immunoenzyme-linked assay (EIA) and conventional
microscopy (CM) plus conventional concentration technique (CCT) using comparative analysis in the diagnosis of symptomatic
and asymptomatic lambliosis when only one stool sample is to be tested. The study enrolled 577 examinees: 208 patients and
369 asymptomatic examinees. Lambliosis was diagnosed using CM plus CCT (three stool samples) and direct EIA (the first sample).
All statistical parameters of the EIA method were 100% in the patients with symptoms of infection. In addition to that, in
the group of asymptomatic carriers of Giardia lamblia (G. lamblia) some very high values of these parameters were recorded too, with sensitivity and neg...

Abstract Neopterin is a useful indicator of the activation state of the cellular immune system, and an elevated level predicts prognosis
in different types of tumors. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum neopterin levels if it is viable predictor for prognosis
in breast carcinoma patients. Serum neopterin was investigated in 56 breast carcinoma patients, 16 patients with benign breast
lesions and 16 healthy women as controls. Neopterin was measured by ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). The clinicopathological
parameters were determined by reviewing both medical charts and pathological records. All patients had been followed-up until
September 2009 or death. The mean serum neopterin concentrations were 8.5 ± 5.2 nmol/L in patients with breast carcinoma, 6.5±3...

Abstract The operative deliveries can expose the fetus to acute and systemic hypoxia along with an increase in perinatal morbidity.
The aim of this study was to reveal any relationship between delivery type and Chitotriosidase and Troponin T levels in cord
blood. Ninety babies born in Ankara Etlik Maternity and Women’s Health Teaching Hospital were involved in the study. The babies
were divided into three groups; Group 1: Normal vaginal; Group 2: Caesarean section; Group 3: Forceps application. Cord blood
samples were drawn from umbilical arteries of the babies soon after the birth. Chitotriosidase enzyme activities in group
3 (141 nmol/ml/h (0–246)) were found higher than groups 1 (100 nmol/ml/h (0–208)) and 2 (91 nmol/ml/h (0–202)) (p<0.01 and

Abstract Cardiac osteosarcoma metastasis is extremely rare and is documented in several case reports in the literature. The behaviour
of osteosarcoma metastases is similar to the primary tumour. Thoracic non-enhanced computed tomography (CT) examination is
beneficial in the detection of calcific cardiac metastases. In this case report, we describe a 29-year-old woman with cardiac
osteosarcoma metastasis after 7 years of follow-up, compare the demographic features with previous cases and discuss the imaging
findings.

Abstract Topiramate is an effective drug for the prevention of migraine headaches. On occasion, topiramate can be associated with a
dose-related anorgasmia. Presented here is an adult case of reversible anorgasmia induced by and possibly attributable to
topiramate therapy. Physicians need to be aware of the potential for topiramate to dose related reversible anorgasmia, and
should inquire about sexual symptoms of patients.

Abstract Glomus caroticum tumors, usually used as an alternative term for carotid body tumor, are of neuroectodermal origin and a part
of the extra adrenal neuroendocrine system pathologies. These abnormalities are the most frequently detected paraganglioma
in the localization of the head and neck. In our report, we present a giant tumor mass on the left side which was operated
on successfully with a review of our experience retrospectively. Between the dates of June 1995 and October 2009, 47 patients,
all of which had a glomus caroticum tumor, underwent to surgery. Tumor presented a wide variety of size and clinical presentations.

Abstract Early detection and treatment of preneoplastic lesions represents an obvious option to reduce morbidity and mortality from
lung malignancies. Until now, radiological detection, sputum cytology, and autofluorescence have shown limited effectiveness
as screening methods. Novel technologies such as Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) are showing promising results, but new studies
are still needed to evaluate their use as screening methods. Together with early detection, adequate methods of lesion treatment,
such as argon plasma coagulation, are needed. This case report concerns a 45-year-old man who was referred for bronchoscopy
after his annual checkup. Using NBI technology, a preneoplastic lesion was identified, and treated using argon plasma coagulation.

model for regression studies. To date, this model has not been used to study the regression of initial atherosclerotic lesions.
The aim of this study was to evaluate a microsurgical technique of syngeneic heterotopic transplantation of the thoracic aorta
of young apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice to the abdominal aorta of wild-type recipients. Stereological quantification
methods were tested in order to assess changes in structure and volume of the aortic wall including the involvement of immune

The clinical case of a 54-year-old woman diagnosed with GUTB is presented. Cloudy urine, abdominal pain, and microscopic hematuria
led us to investigate for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Although cultures were negative, positive Ehrlich-Ziehl-Neelsen (EZN) staining and a positive polymerase chain reaction
(PCR) revealed the diagnosis of M. tuberculosis complex (MTC), which was confirmed by treatment success. It has been shown that PCR is a reliable and rapid method for establishing
or supporting the diagnosis of tuberculosis and can be used in a routine diagnostic algorithm when conventional methods fail
to identify MTC.

Abstract
De novo translocation interrupting the transcription unit of SATB2 gene has been associated with cleft palate only (CPO). We tested for the presence of the copy number of SATB2 gene in a sample of 92 patients with CPO using a quantitative real-time PCR approach. In one patient (1%, 95% CI = 0.2%–6%),
a 19 Mb de novo deletion encompassing the SATB2 gene was detected. These results suggest that SATB2 gene deletions do not play an important role in the etiology of cleft palate.

Abstract Combined antifungal therapy has been suggested to enhance the efficacy and reduce the toxicity of antifungal agents. The aim
of the study was to investigate the in vitro synergistic activity of caspofungin, voriconazole, and fluconazole with amphotericin B against ten isolates of Candida parapsilosis and Candida albicans strains which were resistant to azoles or amphotericin B. Three different antifungal combinations (amphotericin B [AP] —
caspofungin [CS], amphotericin B — fluconazole [FL], and AP — voriconazole [VO]) were evaluated for in vitro synergistic effect by the microdilution checkerboard and E-test methods. For the majority of strains, the combination test
showed indifferent activity. Via the E-test method, synergistic activity was seen in 3 strains ...

of lamotrigine and fluoxetine. A 41-year-old man was admitted to our clinic with fever, skin eruptions (especially on the
face and trunk) and lesions around the mouth. The patient’s history revealed lamotrigine and fluoxetine use during the previous
three weeks for major depression. Dermatological examination revealed a typical clinical picture of SJS; his psychotropic
medications were all stopped. While topical and ocular prednisolone (1mg/kg/day) cares were initiated, steroid dosage was
reduced within 15 days. The condition of patient rapidly improved through this treatment. Effective management of SJS begins

Abstract Wilson’s disease is an autosomal-recessive disorder caused by mutation in the ATP7B gene. Absent or reduced function of ATP7B
protein leads to decreased hepatocellular excretion of copper into bile. Subsequent copper accumulation, first in the liver
but ultimately in the brain and other tissues, produces different clinical manifestations such as hepatic, neurological, hematological,
ophthalmological, and psychiatric problems. Diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion, parameters of copper metabolism, ophthalmic
examination (Kayser-Fleischer rings) and a liver biopsy. Genetic studies are of limited use. Early diagnosis and initiation
of therapy with chelators and therapeutic plasma exchange therapy are essential for prognosis. Liver transplantation corrects

Abstract Scombroid fish or histamine food poisoning is an illness typically associated with fish consumption, rarely encountered and
reported in Europe. Symptoms develop quickly and resemble an allergic reaction. This paper reports three cases of severe scombroid
poisoning in previously healthy patients, which presented diffuse macular erythema, hypotension, palpitations, and abnormal
electrocardiogram (ECG). All patients required intensive care, with a complete resolution of symptoms and ECG changes within
24 hours. This is the first Romanian report of scombroid poisoning, emphasizing that medical personnel should be aware of
this condition, because symptoms and ECG changes often lead to confusion with other diseases.

Abstract Primary aldosteronism (PA) has long been considered a rare disease, but a higher prevalence was suggested recently. The aim
of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of PA in a group of Bulgarian hypertensive patients, including patients with
adrenal incidentalomas (AI). The aldosterone to renin ratio (ARR)>750 was used as a positive screening test and the Captopril
test was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Adrenal CT scan was used to differentiate between the main subtypes of PA-aldosterone-producing
adenoma (APA) and idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (IHA). The diagnosis of APA was retrospectively confirmed after surgery. After
excluding other forms of endocrine hypertension, except PA, we investigated a total of 472 consecutive hypertensive patients,

We report a case of pancreatic tuberculosis with systemic brucellosis in a 29 year old
veterinarian who presented with epigastric pain and loss of appetite. Initial investigations revealed leukocytosis with moderately
elevated transaminase, gamma glutamyl transferase, amylase and lipase levels. Imaging studies revealed an anechoic multiloculated
cyst in the body and tail of the pancreas. Given the patient’s occupational risk coupled with the presence of a positive Brucella
agglutination test (with a titer of 1:320); a diagnosis of pancreatitis secondary to brucellosis was given. In addition to
standard pancreatitis therapy of bowel rest with intravenous fluid/electrolyte replacement, anti-brucellosis therapy was also
administered. The patient’s initial response to therapy was pos...

inoculation with Giardia trophozoites efficiently reduced G. lamblia infection in mice. More specifically, excretion of Giardia cysts were reduced significantly in probiotic-treated groups, and resolution of infection was observed by day 21 post-inoculation.
It was also observed that the lactobacillus count increased tremendously and continuously in faeces of all probiotic-fed mice,
and was significantly higher as compared with that in control mice. Histological analysis of microvilli membrane integrity

We describe
and discuss two cases of this rare syndrome in a 46-year perimenopausal and a 59-year old postmenopausal woman. Gynecologic,
ultrasound examination, and biochemistry testing (β-HCG) confirm the diagnosis of nonexistent clinical and biochemical pregnancy.
These examinations have the potential to confirm abdominal tumors, while psychiatric examinations generally reveal the psychic
basis of the disease; which should be treated through team approach by both the psychiatrist and gynecologist. Additionally,
special reference should be given to long-term psychiatric follow-up and management of the current mental stress and emotional
problems by a combination of antipsychotics and psychotherapy, depending on each individual clinical picture.

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of Ankaferd Blood Stopper® against methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Enterococcus species, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas species, Acinetobacter species and Klebsiella species of nosocomial origin. Ankaferd inhibited growth in 72.4% to 100% of the bacteria tested, depending on the type of
the isolate. As a result, it can be stated that Ankaferd inhibits the in vitro growth of nosocomial bacteria. This is a novel,
important finding since severe hospital infections coexist with many hemostatic disorders, and the use of Ankaferd may increase
hemostatic potential in such clinical conditions.

bony and ligamentous structures enabled a successful re-implantation of another iForma™ implant 9 months later with good clinical
results at follow-up examination 1 year postoperatively. This is very much in contrast to the extensive and complex revision

Abstract One of the most important adverse drug reactions that physicians encounter is the life-threatening prothrombotic syndrome
known as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). In patients with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and coronary
arterial disease, alternative anticoagulatory regimens are needed during cardiac surgery for prevention of thrombosis. Treatment
options for such patients now generally include the use of alternative anticoagulants such as lepirudin, bivalirudin, argatroban
or danaparoid. In this article, we present a case where heparin-induced thrombocytopenia was properly performed coronary arterial
bypass grafting by using lepirudin. (This sentence is confusing)

We report the case of a patient with no clinically significant history of a coagulopathy disorder, cirrhosis, or portal hypertension
who presented with duodenal and jejunal varices that resulted in lower gastrointestinal bleeding with superior mesenteric
vein thrombosis. Mesenteric angiography revealed superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and varices at the fourth part of the
duodenum and the proximal jejunum draining into the main portal vein, but no active bleeding source was recognized. The patient
was hemodynamically unstable. Emergency laparotomy was performed and revealed duodenal and jejunal varices, with occlusion
of the superior mesenteric vein. Partial resection of the duodenum and jejunum and end-to-end anastomosis were performed.
After surgery, the patient was hemodynamica...

The patient was conscious, hemodynamically stable, and had suffered open tibia and femur fractures, as well as closed pubic
arm fractures. He had gross hematuria and radiologic study revealed a 3.5 cm length laceration on the transplanted kidney.
His renal functions and hematuria recovered after intensive care. He required 2 surgeries for the open fractures but his general
condition worsened after the surgical interventions. Acinetobacter, Candida albicans and pseudomonas aeruginosa were determined by blood cultures. Immunosupressive drugs (cyclosporine, prednisolone and azathioprine) were stopped. Despite
intensive care, the patient died...

Abstract The etiology of Dupuytren’s disease is controversial and thus the disease can only be treated when it presents with symptoms
to warrant intervention. Surgical treatment is the method of choice to preserve hand dexterity and function. It is advisable
to perform surgery at an early stage of disease progression, but various surgical techniques have been advocated. A partial
fasciectomy is recommend by many authors, whereas a total aponeurectomy, where all palmar tissue is removed, might reduce
the risk of recurrent disease due to the widespread removal of aponeurosis. The total aponeurectomy is performed less frequently
due to the potential complications of this technique. In order to achieve an objective comparison of both surgical options
we performed a literatur...

and sometimes is indicated in patients with coronary artery stents due to arrhythmias. Only a few reports have been published
describing the potential adverse interactions between foreign bodies and electrical cardioversion. The aim of this animal
study was to investigate the acute effect of repeated external defibrillation on coronary artery tissue and adjacent myocardium
at the implantation site of coronary stents. Custom-made stainless steel stents were implanted in the coronary arteries of
7 dogs. Rapid ventricular pacing was performed to induce ventricular fibrillation. Defibrillation was achieved [5 J/kg; n=2

Abstract The A3243G mutation in the mitochondrial tRNALeu (UUR) gene is one of the most common causes of mitochondrial DNA related disorders. Originally it was described in MELAS syndrome
(Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic acidosis, Stroke-like episodes), later it had been found to be associated with various
phenotypes. In our study the mutation frequency of the A3243G mtDNA mutation was investigated in patients with maternal sensoneural
hearing loss, stroke-like episodes, ataxia and myopathy with undetermined etiology. We screened 631 Hungarian patients in
North-East, South-West and Central Hungary between 1999 and 2008 for this mutation. The mtDNA analysis was performed from

Abstract Anti-annexin A5 antibodies are directed against annexin A5 — a phospholipid-binding protein that belongs to the ubiquitous
annexin family. These antibodies were first discovered in 1994 by Matsuda et al. in women with recurrent fetal loss or preeclampsia
and in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and positive lupus anticoagulant and/or anticardiolipin antibodies. Since
then anti-annexin A5 antibodies have been the focus of research. In addition to their well known prothrombotic and procoagulant
activities the authors discuss the involvement of these antibodies in the pathogenesis of antiphospholipid syndrome, recurrent

against different type specificities and routine vaccination in infants might result in selection and immune escape of wild-type
rotavirus strains, strain surveillance has been initiated before and during the vaccine introduction. We aimed to provide
corresponding information on local strain prevalence in Anatolia, mid-western Turkey during the introduction of rotavirus
vaccines. Stool samples positive for group A rotavirus by commercial enzyme immunoassay were subjected to reverse transcription-polymerase
chain reaction based genotyping of the outer capsid antigens, VP7 and VP4, determining G and P type specificities respectively.

Abstract Statins are widely used and well tolerated cholesterol-lowering drugs, and when used for therapy purposes reduce morbidity
and mortality from coronary heart disease. Simvastatin is one of nine known statins, specific inhibitors of hepatic enzyme
3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, the rate-limiting step of cholesterol biosynthesis, and is believed to reduce
plasma cholesterol levels by decreasing the activity of this enzyme. Statin drugs represent the major improvement in the treatment
of hypercholesterolemia that constitutes the main origin of atherosclerosis, leading to coronary heart disease. Although statins
are generally safe, minor and severe adverse reactions are well known complications of statin use. Adverse events associated
with simvastatin...

This study took place in Ankara, Turkey, between 08/2005
and 11/2006. Patients with endoscopic diagnosis of melanosis coli were interviewed for demographical data and use of herbal
remedies. A total of 380 colonoscopies were performed during this period. Melanosis coli was diagnosed endoscopically in 12
patients (3.17%), 11 of whom were found to have characteristic pigment-laden macrophages in histopathological examination.
Herbal remedies were the main etiological factor in the development of melanosis coli in 10 out of 11 patients. Diffuse involvement
was found in 2 patients who had a history of long-term use. In 8 patients, melanosis coli was located in the left side of
the colon. Although melanosis coli is a harmless discoloration of colonic mucosa resulting from complementary or...

Abstract Bezoars are collections of indigestible materials found in the gastrointestinal tract. Rapunzel syndrome is a rare complication
of a gastric trichobezoar in which the mass of hair extends through the pylorus into the small bowel and can even reach the
colon. A 12-year-old girl with severe pain and a feeling of “fullness” in the upper abdomen was admitted to Pediatric Surgery.
Two days before admission, the patient presented with vague abdominal pain, vomiting with a little blood, and black stool.
On physical examination she was pale and listless with patchy alopecia. Abdominal examination showed a mobile, palpable mass
in the epigastrium. The initial hematocrit was 7,1%, and the erythrocyte count was 1,12×1012 cells per liter. Abdominal ultrasound and computed...

This study was designed to investigate faecal shedding of local isolates of Arcobacter spp. Using real time PCR for confirmation, A. cryaerophilus and A. butzleri were isolated from the stool of healthy chickens. Pathogenicity of the organisms was tested by administering a single oral
challenge of 102–109 cfu/ml to 45 healthy adult male albino rats divided equally among 5 groups. Uninfected rats were used
as the control group. A. cryaerophilus and A. butzleri produced infection in 100% of the animals. Experimental infection was dose dependent and caused diarrheal illness and faecal
shedding was noted up to 5 weeks post infection. The present study demonstrates that rats can act as a reservoir and potential
source of Arcobacter infection in humans and animals exposed to this pathogen....

However, the actual diagnosis of Parathyroid Carcinoma was delayed until metastases to the lung were discovered. She was also
found to have Pituitary Macro adenoma with Silent Acromegaly, with no clinical features whatsoever. She underwent transphenoidal
hypophysectomy with postoperative radiotherapy. However, the disease process remained biochemically active necessitating commencement
of somatostatin analogues. There is also a tumour at the head of the pancreas which at present is non functional with normal
gut hormone profile and normal 24 hour urinary 5-hydroxyl indole acetic acid (5-HIAA) excretion assay. Our case highlights

In this study, the
in-vivo effects of nociceptin (N/OFQ(1–13)NH2) and its structure analogue [Orn9]N/OFQ(1–13)NH2 were studied on markers of oxidative stress in erythrocytes and liver of rats 4 hours after subplantar administration of
carrageenan (CG) (1%, 100 µl) in the right hind paw. A considerable inflammatory oedema of the paw was observed. CG did not
change blood haemoglobin content, hematocrit value, glutathione level and antioxidant enzyme activities in the erythrocytes,
but there was an increase in lipid peroxidation. In liver, CG-induced imbalance was manifested by an increase in lipid peroxidation
and a decrease in glutathione level. Both peptides (20 µg, i.p.), when administered alone, had no effect on all parameters
tested. When either [Orn9]N/OFQ(1–13)NH2 or N/O...

In this study, desflurane and sevoflurane resulted in both a significant prolongation of QT
and QTc and a significant increase in QT and QTc dispersion when compared with the basal values. In the sevoflurane group,
there was no significant increase in postoperative ventricular arrhythmia, compared to that during the preoperative period.
However, this increase was significant in the desflurane group (p = 0.009). Sevoflurane and desflurane result in an increase
in QT dispersion. Postoperative rhythmic control should carefully be monitored, especially in the desflurane group.

Among the many species, Dermatophagoides farinae, D. pteronyssinus, and Euroglyphus maynei have been found to be commonly associated with Ig-E-mediated allergic diseases. As a result, there is increasing effort to
develop methods for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by these species. The purpose of the current study was
to explore the evolutionary relationships among house dust mites. After adult D. farinae were separated and isolated for total RNA extract, the cDNA coding for Der f 1 and Der f 2 were cloned and sequenced. Then

Lithuanian, Polish and Russian school-aged children in national and international contexts. Investigations were carried out
in the framework of Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) study — a WHO collaborative cross-national survey. Five
thousand seven hundred and seventy six randomly selected students aged 11, 13, and 15 years of age answered questionnaires
in the classroom in 108 schools located in different regions in Lithuania in March–April of 2006. Questions on perceived health

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is the third most dreaded pathogen posing a severe threat due to its refractory behavior against the current armamentarium
of antimicrobial drugs. This is attributed to the evolution of an array of resistance mechanisms responsible for morbidity
and mortality globally. Local and international travel has resulted in the movement of drug resistant S. aureus clones from hospitals into communities and further into different geographical areas where they have been responsible for
epidemic outbreaks. Thus, there is a dire necessity to refrain further cross movement of these multidrug resistant clones
across the globe. The plausible alternative to prevent this situation is by thorough implementation of regulatory aspects
of sanitation, formulary us...

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of systemic and intra-arterial application of heparin by measuring tissue
levels of inflammatory cytokines. Twenty-one adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups (Group A, B and
C). All the rats had undergone ligation of the right femoral artery with 4-0 silk suture to induce limb ischemia. Group A
was the control group. In Group B, unfractionated heparin of 1500 U/kg/day was given through the tail vein for 10 days, the
same dose was given to distal part of ligated right femoral artery for 10 days in Group C. On the 3rd, 5th, and 10th days, biopsies were taken from rectus femoris muscle on the ischemic extremities. Tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β,

Conclusion:
Medical diet programs with iron sources are examined in association with food consumption. Assessment of hematological results
suggests that, during pregnancy, each patient should receive a specific dose, rather than a routine dose, of iron and folic
acid.

Abstract Gossypiboma (retained surgical sponge) is a pseudotumor within the body that is composed of non-absorbable surgical material
with a cotton matrix. Because the symptoms of gossypiboma usually are nonspecific and may appear years after surgery, the
diagnosis of gossypiboma may be difficult because the condition may mimic a benign or malignant soft-tissue tumour in the
abdomen and pelvis. A 61-year-old woman with a one-year history of left upper-quadrant pain and weight loss was referred to
our center. She had undergone peptic ulcer perforation 23 year ago. Physical examination revealed dullness and palpable mass
in the left upper abdomen. On examination by computed tomography (CT), a hypodense mass of 12 cm in diameter between the greater
curvature of the stomach, p...

We examined the age-related changes in
the distribution of SP-immunoreactive nerve structures in the distal part of the rat large intestine. Using immunohistochemistry,
the presence of SP was studied in fresh tissues from Wistar rats at different ages taken at three sampling sites, the distal
rectum, anal canal and internal anal sphincter. In the 15-day old rats the myenteric plexus of the distal rectum and anal
canal was well outlined by numerous SP-immunoreactive varicose nerve fibres encircling immunonegative perikarya. In the circular
muscle layer, nerve fibres and small nerve bundles ran parallel to the muscle cells, while in the longitudinal muscle layer,
only occasional nerve fibres were seen. At the level of the internal anal sphincter, no myenteric ganglia were present. Here...

We describe two cases of tuberculous
spondylitis in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis therapy. They are IFN-γ assay diagnosed (QuantiFERON-TB Gold) and
conservatively treated. Our cases suggest that IFN-γ assays equip clinicians with more accurate tools for tuberculosis control.
A combination of T-SPOT.TB testing and MRI assessment may be the accurate method to diagnose tuberculous spondylitis in patients
with end-stage renal disease.

who developed severe hyperphosphatemia and associated hypocalcemia after bowel preparation with oral NaP. A 39-year old woman
was admitted to the hospital because of multiple bone fractures. The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism was confirmed.
Further assays suggested Cushing’s disease and MRI disclosed a pituitary microadenoma. Considering the diagnostic suspect
of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, computed tomography of abdomen was performed, showing a mass in the right adrenal.
The patient underwent transsphenoidal surgery and then total parathyroidectomy. Despite total removal of the microadenoma

We report an unusual case of a 21-year-old woman with a leukemia
in remission, in whom routine transthorasic echocardiographic examination demonstrated an incidental left ventricular mass.
The patient underwent successful resection of the left ventricular mass under cardiopulmonary bypass through the left atrial
approach. Histopathologic examination was diagnostic for myxoma. In this case, the presentation of the mass was atypical for
two reasons: the tumour was a cardiac myxoma in the left ventricular localisation and in a patient with leukemia in remission.

Abstract Lead exposure is a common public health problem. Exposure to the metal can cause hematological, gastrointestinal, rheumatological,
endocrine, neurological and renal problems in humans. However, effects on the thyroid gland are controversial. We retrospectively
investigated thyroid function parameters in 65 adult males who had been occupationally exposed to lead. We then compared the
findings with those of 60 male patients who had no history of lead exposure or thyroid abnormalities, who served as the control
group. The mean ages of the lead-exposed workers and the controls were 34.3 ± 7.9 and 32.9 ± 6.6 years respectively. Blood
lead levels in the lead-exposed workers were significantly higher than in the control group. The lead-exposed workers were

Abstract Fungal peritonitis is a rare but serious complication in patients with chronic renal failure on continuous ambulatory peritoneal
dialysis (CAPD). The purpose of this study was to report the prevalence of fungal peritonitis in patients on CAPD in the Clinical
Center-Nis (South Serbia) in the period from 1997 until the end of 2007. Fungal species were isolated in 66 cases (4.5%) of
1471 peritoneal fluid (PF) samples that we examined. During the study period, 22 (1.5%) cases of fungal peritonitis were registered.
In 19 cases, Candida isolates were identified, Candida albicans (C. albicans) being the most common species (n=15). Two cases of fungal peritonitis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus and 1 possible case caused by Cladosporium cladosporioides (Cl. cladosporioides)...

This study was undertaken to investigate
knowledge, attitudes and practices among HCWs towards blood borne pathogens. We carried out a cross sectional KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practice) study, using self-administered questionnaire. The study population consisted of 127(23.6%) physicians, and 410 (76.4%) nurses
and laboratory technicians. Factor analysis and conditional multiple logistic regression were used in statistical analysis.
We found that the knowledge of the epidemiological characteristics of blood-borne infection, the risk of acquisition and available
preventative measures among HCWs is insufficient. Doctors were more knowledgeable about the transmissibility of blood borne
pathogens regarding sexual transmission after percutaneous exposure (odds ratio) OR=2.71; 95% (conf...

Abstract The authors report on two multiple myeloma sibling pairs. In the absence of a known disease-specific marker one can only speculate
on an explanation: is it because of inherited errors or is it related to the same environmental exposure, or both? In this
study HLA typing and metabolizing enzyme polymorphism studies have been carried out with the aim of finding inherited similarities
in the siblings or characteristics that might differ from the average population. Sibling pair 1 shared an HLA haplotype.
Sibling pair 2 shared only HLA-B51, DR4, DRw53, DQ3. Sibling 1/1 was GSTT1 / GSTM1 null and GSTP1 Ile105Val; sibling 1/2 was a GSTT1 / GSTM1 heterozygote and GSTP1 Ile105Val; sibling 2/1 and 2/2 were GSTT1 heterozygotes and shared GSTM1 null / GSTP1 Ile105Ile. The sibl...

Abstract The aim of the present experimental study was to determine and to compare the effects of vitamin E and of selenium on the
blood flow to a wound region in rats, using the xenon-133 (133Xe) clearance technique. Burn wounds were made on the right thighs of rats followed by oral administration of vitamin E or
selenium for a period of 10 days. The effect of vitamin E and of selenium individually on blood flow in the wound region was
assessed before and after oral administration using the 133Xe clearance technique. Both vitamin E and selenium significantly increased the blood flow in the wound region (P<0.05). Our
results in rats suggest that both vitamin E and selenium have beneficial effects on the skin wound healing process by increasing
the skin blood flow.

Abstract Chlorfenvinphos is an organophosphate insecticide, posing a risk to those who are professionally involved in its production
and use in agriculture, as well as to the general population. Organophosphates (OPs) are the class of insecticides, whose
primary target is acetylcholinesterase (AChE) that hydrolyzes acetylcholine, a major neurotransmitter at the central and peripheral
neuronal synapses. Moreover, many authors postulate that these compounds, both in acute and chronic intoxication, change the
activities of antioxidative enzymes, thus leading to the enhancement of lipid peroxidation in many tissues. In the current
study, animals received once a day, intragastrically with a stomach tube, 0.1ml/100g of olive oil (control groups) and oil

Abstract Resistin has been associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. The elevated serum resistin level in human diabetes is often
associated with a pro-inflammatory milieu. In vitro data suggest that C-reactive protein (CRP) significantly increases resistin
expression in cultured human PBMC, yet the relationship in vivo is largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine

In conclusion, our meta-analysis showed the significance of genetic
alterations in the folate metabolism genes in maternal susceptibility to DS offspring. Our results suggest that the importance
of folate supplementation to women in reproductive age in prevention of non-disjunction be revised. Further genetic studies
on a combined effect of multiple folate metabolism genes is recommended. Additionally, more thorough studies on the haplotype
analyses of genes is recommended as well, especially in populations that have not yet been investigated thus far.

We present a case of a young woman with acute pancreatitis secondary to an overdose
of nifedipine and acetaminophen in a suicide attempt. We excluded other causes of acute pancreatitis by clinical history,
serum toxicology, serology, and abdominal imaging. The most likely underlying pathophysiological mechanism was ischemic injury
of the pancreas secondary to severe collapse induced by nifedipine and possible acetaminophen-induced direct pancreatotoxicity.
The pancreatitis resolved with treatment that included continuous veno-venous haemofiltration in an intensive care unit. Emergency
and intensive care units should be aware of this unusual complication of such poisoning. To our knowledge, this is the first
reported association between massive nifedipine overdose and acute pancreatit...

Abstract Recent advancements in curative-intent therapies have led to dramatic improvements in breast cancer-specific mortality but
at the direct expense of increased risk of cardiovascular-related mortality. The use of radiation therapy has led to significant
improvements in survival for patients treated for breast cancer. However, as patients live longer, the potentially serious
adverse effects of radiation on the heart have raised concerns. Coronary artery disease following irradiation is encountered
rarely but is one of the most devastating treatable complications. In this article we review the cardiac complications associated
with radiation therapy.

Abstract It is unusual to find a giant invasive basal cell carcinoma in the occipital region of the head. We are presenting a case
of basal cell carcinoma invading and eroding occipital bone, managed with an unusual scalp reconstruction method. A 69-year-old
female presented with a 16x19 cm diameter tumour in the occipital region. Preoperative biopsy revealed a basal cell carcinoma.
A complete surgical excision of the tumour was performed in one-step surgery and tissue defect was reconstructed by a pedicle
latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap. Our case shows that this distant pedicle flap is safe and reliable, and should be
revised as the option for the occipital region reconstruction.

We present a case of successfully treated gross pericardial
effusion and tamponade in a 22-week pregnant woman with hypothyroidism. The patient was treated by pericardial drainage with
further treatment of hypothyroidism with levothyroxine. During the follow-up pregnancy was uncomplicated without recurrence
of pericardial effusion and successful delivery of full-term baby. We conclude that careful monitoring of thyroid functional
tests and proper management should be performed in pregnant women with hypothyroidism to prevent cardiac complications of
the disease, like pericardial effusion and tamponade.

This study aimed to determine whether magnesium
as a lightweight and biocompatible metal is suitable as a biomaterial for spinal implants based on its MRI artifacting behavior.
To compare artifacting behaviors, we implanted into one porcine cadaveric spine different test spacers made of magnesium,
titanium and CFRP. All test spacers were scanned using 2 T1-TSE MRI sequences. The artifact dimensions were traced on all
scans and statistically analyzed. The total artifact volume and median artifact area of the titanium spacers were statistically
significantly larger than magnesium spacers (p < 0.001), while magnesium and CFRP spacers produced almost identical artifacting
behaviors (p > 0.05). Our results suggest that spinal implants made with magnesium alloys will behave more like...

Abstract A 13-year-old boy with atrial septal defect and tricuspid valve abnormality was reported. He had crepitan ralles and signs
of heart failure. He was treated with digital, diuretic and antimicrobial therapies. After clinical improvement he underwent
surgery. The atrial septal defect was closed, and ringplasty was applied to the tricuspid valve. After the operation, he could
not be extubated because of respiratory failure. On the seventh day following the surgery, he developed pneumothorax and hyportension
and died. Postmortem examination showed bilateral diffuse pulmonary tuberculosis. The aim of this report is to emphasise the
association of tuberculosis and congenital heart disease.

Abstract Incisional hernias and abdominal-wall defects consume large amounts of healthcare resources. Use of mesh is effective in treatment
of these disorders and can decrease the rate of recurrence. This experimental study focused on the safety of mesh use in the
setting of malnutrition, a condition that impairs wound healing. Rats were divided into two groups: normally fed and food-restricted.
An abdominal-wall defect, 2 by 2 cm, was covered with polypropylene mesh, 2.5 by 2.5 cm. After sacrifice of the rats at the
21st and 60th days, tissue samples were sent for tensiometric and histopathological studies. No significant difference in
infectious complications was observed between the two groups. Tensiometry revealed no significant differences between the

Abstract Gastric volvulus (GV) is a rare pathological entity, which is difficult to diagnose, may rapidly progress to infarction and
necrosis of the stomach, and can be fatal. A 68-year-old woman presented to the surgical outpatient clinic of Istanbul University,
Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, in August, 2006, with a 3-month history of nausea, vomiting, and recurrent abdominal pain. Physical
examination revealed epigastric tenderness, but otherwise within normal limits. An urgent abdominal computed tomographic examination
revealed only a paraesophageal hernia. A mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus with a large paraesophageal hernia was found on laparoscopy.
The surgical procedure involved derotation of the stomach and closure of the paraesophageal hernia with a dual V-shaped gra...

Abstract Severe and composite defects of the nose due to trauma or excision of neoplasms can cause significant functional and aesthetic
problems. It has been known that nasal stents have been used to maintain the nasal patency and nostril shape for a long time.
Recently, nasal prosthesis was introduced as a method to solve aesthetic problems of the patients who had an amputated nose.
In the present study, nasal prosthesis combined with nazal stents was used to camouflage the nasal disfigurement and to maintain
the nasal patency in two adult female patients. Functional and aesthetic results was accepted as satisfactory by both the
patients and the physicians.

Abstract Transfusion after cardiac surgery is very common. This rate varies between institutions and has remained high despite established
transfusion guidelines. We analyzed our database of patients who underwent isolated CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) to
determine the predictive factors of homologous transfusion and associated postoperative morbidity, mortality and resource
utilization. All 14,152 patients who underwent first-time isolated CABG, with or without cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) who
had postoperative homologous transfusion between February 2002 and March 2008 in Tehran Heart Center, were evaluated retrospectively.
Overall, 16.5% of patients received transfusion. Transfused patients demonstrated a significantly higher incidence of postoperative

We describe the utilization of computer-assisted
lateral UKA placement for lateral knee osteoarthritis with a valgus malalignment of 10°. Navigation allows for a dynamic intraoperative
visualisation of the mechanical axis, as well as for accurate component positioning and overall postoperative limb alignment.
The systems allow the knee position to be captured with appropriate tension in extension and flexion prior to making definite
cuts. Postoperatively, no instabilities occurred with a precise component placement. Navigation can be used in rare cases
for lateral UKA.

Abstract The association of elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia, gout) with the presence of classical coronary risk factors and
coronary artery disease (CAD) or myocardial infarction (MI) has been analysed in many epidemiological studies. Numerous studies
have revealed that hypertension, high body mass index (BMI), lipid disorders (especially raised triglyceride (TG) levels and
low high dense lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level), and increased creatinine or insulin levels have caused hyperuricemia.
Gout has often occurred with typical disorders for the metabolic syndrome X. Significant correlation of the serum uric level
and the CAD presence and severity of coronary atherosclerosis confirmed by coronary angiography has been observed in women.
Hyperuricemia has also i...

Abstract Palliative care aims at improving the patient’s quality of life. The assessment of this quality of life (QoL) is crucial for
the evaluation of palliative care outcome. Many patients require hospital admissions for symptom control during their cancer
journey and most of them die in hospitals, although they would like to stay at home until the end of their lives. In 1986,
the European Organization for Research and Treatment (EORTC) initiated a research programme to develop an integrated, modular
approach for evaluating the quality of life of patients participating in international clinical trials. This questionnaire
measures cancer patients’ physical, psychological and social functions and was used in a wide range of clinical cancer trials

Abstract The report by Gumaste et al. [Gastroenterology 1991;101:1361–1366] that the lipase/amylase ratio (Lip/Amy) could be a new
index distinguishing acute episodes of alcoholic (Lip/Amy >2) from nonalcoholic pancreatitis (Lip/Amy <2), with the critical
value being Lip/Amy =2, has been followed by some debate between supporters and opponents. By comparing the Lip/Amy in a group
of 16 carefully selected patients with mild acute gallstone-related (biliary) pancreatitis with that in a reference group
of 44 controls, this study examines whether or not this ratio could be a useful index for diagnosing biliary pancreatitis.
Considering that both pancreatic and hepatobiliary systems are blocked by stones, hepatic biochemical parameters such as serum
levels of aspartate ...

This study has goals of examining whether pre-eclampsia may lead to an increase of elastic tissue fibers in blood vessel walls
of placental stem villi or whether there are differences in the thickness of blood vessel walls within these villi when compared
to normotensive pregnant women. Non-infarcted placental tissue samples from 28 participants with uncomplicated pregnancies
and 26 patients with pre-eclampsia were obtained. After routine histological procedures, the sections were processed either
for conventional Verhoeff staining for the demonstration of elastic fiber system. Paraffine sections from placenta biopsies
prepared for light microscopic examination were gathered. In uncomplicated pregnancies, terminal villi blood vessels were
observed with no stained elastic tissue fiber...

Abstract Colorectal cancer ranks third as the most common malignancy in the United States and represents the second leading cause of
cancer-related mortality. The appendix is thought to have a productive effect against colorectal carcinoma by the immune function
based on its association with substantial lymphatic tissue. But, an appendectomy is still the most commonly performed emergency
surgical procedure. It is aimed to assess the association between colorectal cancer and appendicectomy. The medical records
of 455 patients who received medical and/or surgical treatment with the diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma in two medical centers
in a-five-year period were reviewed. The patients were divided into subgroups according to the colonic localization of the

old girl with a large, complicated cerebral abscess. In addition, the course of treatment is presented. The patient’s recovery
was excellent. The follow-up MRI showed only subtle porencephalic changes as the only parenchymal sequels, which may have
been due to central nervous system (CNS) plasticity in infants.

Abstract High-residual platelet activity despite the dual antiplatelet treatment with aspirin and clopidogrel is associated with major
adverse cardiac events, including stent thrombosis. Acute and subacute stent thrombosis is rare, but presents itself with
serious complications including high mortality and morbidity rates. Light transmittance aggregometry with specific agonists
— arachidonic acid and 5-adenosin diphosphate — is still considered a standard for the assessment of platelet reactivity,
besides novel methods like vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein phosphorylation. In our case study, we report the coincidence
of high-residual platelet activity with subacute stent thrombosis despite the recommended doses of antiplatelet agents — aspirin
and clopidogrel. S...

in Tshwane and to probe factors that impacted on the hearing aid fitting process, in order to contribute to the formation
of service delivery guidelines. As most participants were embarrassed to wear their devices, results showed that there was
a general consensus about the self-image and wearing of hearing aids. Furthermore, it was found that most government fitted
hearing aids and accessories were poorly cared for and maintained. One of the factors which negatively influenced the utilisation
and maintenance of hearing aids was finance. Participants could not afford to properly maintain and service their hearing

In conclusion, rectal bleeding in the presence of constipation or diarrhea is the main sign for diagnosis
of SRUS. This syndrome is usually misdiagnosed; it is frequently confused with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) because the
rectal macroscopic and microscopic lesions and true polyps of rectum are similar. We suggest that most of patients who are
treating for IBD and true polyps without any response are suffering from SRUS. Regarding misdiagnosis between SRUS and IBD
or rectal polyp, the exact prevalence of SRUS has been mistakenly underestimated.

We describe the first case of uterine
leiomyoma with lymphoid infiltration observed in a patient after chemotherapy for sigmoid cancer. We performed immunohistochemical
analysis with a panel of antibodies to several markers. Detection of CD20, CD3, Ki67, CD68 and Epstein-Barr virus nuclear
antigen assisted in the differential diagnosis and partial elucidation of the pathogenesis. In addition, we examined the lysosome-associated
membrane proteins LAMP-1 and LAMP-2 for the first time in this lesion. Their expression was elevated, indicating enhanced
autophagy, an indirect sign of degenerative changes in this benign tumor characterized by massive lymphoid infiltration.

Abstract In the current study, we evaluated the dynamics of oxidative stress markers in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI)
treated by primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Thirty consecutive patients with AMI with ST elevation were included.
Plasma lipid peroxidation end product malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in blood plasma were evaluated.
Peripheral venous blood samples were obtained prior to reperfusion and at five time points after reperfusion. The control
group consisted of 20 ischemic patients without acute coronary syndrome. TAC in the AMI group at admission was lower than
in control patients (1.26 + 0.32 vs. 1.52 + 0.24 mmol/l). Within 1 h after reperfusion, in most cases, values significantly
declined (1 min, 1....

In conclusion: 1) Aging decreases reactivity to respiratory alkalosis
in elderly normotensives; 2) hyperventilation induces significant pressor changes frequently in essential hypertension, but
rarely in secondary hypertension; 3) the significant pressor responses to hyperventilation reflect the daytime pressor profiles
predicting the highest daily fluctuations of BP values.

Abstract Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is a hereditary multisystem disease involving the skin and nervous system. It is the most common
form of autosomal dominant phakomatoses with 100% penetrance but wide phenotypic variability. The NF1 gene is located on chromosome
17q11.2 and encodes for a tumour suppressor protein. Because affected individuals have an increased risk of tumor formation,
this disorder is classified as inherited cancer syndrome. The risk of malignancies in NF1 affected patients is estimated to
be 5–15% higher than in the general population. We reviewed clinical aspects and genetic mechanisms of tumorigenesis in NF1
affected patients.

Abstract Microarray, a miniaturized glass slide or membrane with immobilized DNA probes, is a powerful tool for the analysis of mutations,
gene expression and sequencing. This technique requires chip (glass slide or membrane) fabrication, preparation of probes
and labelled targets, hybridization and data analysis. Microarrays give the possibility to evaluate a wide spectrum of candidate
genes, to simultaneously observe interaction of genes, to detect polymorphisms within genes and identify therapeutic targets.
Coronary artery disease being a major cause of death, is a disorder influenced by either genetic or environmental factors.
Microarray analysis of gene expression can be used to identify genes involved in disease progression and in disease reduction.
