Adversity, Emotional Arousal, and Problem Behaviour in Adolescence: The Role of Non-Verbal Cognitive Ability as a Resilience Promoting Factor

Conclusions: These findings are important for both theory development and intervention design. They advance theory because they suggest that non-verbal cognitive ability buffers the effect of risk on overall problem behaviour by strengthening control over emotions. They have implications for intervention design because they suggest that interventions carried out to enhance children's emotion regulation skills in the presence of multiple adversity might be more effective if they target children who score low on non-verbal cognitive ability.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents (IPT- A): Extending the Reach from Academic to Community Settings1

Depression is a persistent and impairing illness for adolescents. Many adolescents have limited access to care and/or do not receive adequate treatment for their depression. Researchers have developed a number of empirically supported interventions for adolescent depression; the challenge is to bring these treatments into community settings and assess their effectiveness under real world conditions. This paper provides a critical examination of research conducted on the use of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for depressed adolescents (IPT-A). The paper presents evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of IPT-A. Implementation and dissemination efforts are discussed in regard to lessons learned and directions for future research.
This paper describes the process by which child mental health researchers partnered with paraprofessionals called peer family advisors to create a stress-reducing intervention for caregivers of children and adolescents with mental health challenges. The issues that arose as the team strove to develop an intervention that was both relevant to the issues that these caregivers grapple with, as well as palatable and feasible for peers to deliver, are discussed.
The focus of this review is the ways in which behaviour can be measured across cultures. Similarities and differences in behaviour and how these may be understood are discussed, with particular reference to recognition of problem behaviours. The review considers the evidence relating to the appropriateness of instruments currently used in cross cultural research to elicit information about behaviour. The review concludes with a discussion on future needs in this regard. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Conclusions: Behavioural inhibition, as a potential risk factor for childhood shyness and anxiety, can be predicted by maternal judgment of infant distress to novelty at age 4 months. The Infant Behaviour Questionnaire therefore might be used to identify infants presumably at risk for childhood anxiety disorders. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

The National Health Service in England has deployed guidance from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) to assist practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) but, though the number of prescriptions has risen since its introduction, the impact of the guidance on prescribing practice has not been studied. Clinic records of all open ADHD cases (296) in three English Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services were examined. The time from referral to either prescription or data collection was extracted for a survival analysis. It was hypothesised that NICE guidance, clinic, patient and referral characteristics would all influence the speed and likelihood of prescription. Following the introduction of NICE guidance, the median t...

The role played by diet in mental health is of increasing interest to patients, parents, health professionals and public policy makers. This review examines the literature assessing the role of diet in childhood cognitive development, school performance and behaviour. The effects of inadequate dietary intake and of nutrient supplements are considered. Studies of diet and specific psychiatric diagnoses such as depression and psychosis are discussed, with a focus on the evidence for the child and adolescent population.
Background: The purpose of this research study was to identify factors that affect mental health care for children with special health care needs (CSHCN) and to identify how these factors vary among different socioeconomic levels. Methods: Data were obtained from the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, 2000[ndash]2002. The analysis examined the relationships of demographic characteristics, geographical location of household, severity of condition, and social factors on unmet need for mental health care. Multiple logistic regression models were constructed for four socioeconomic status (SES) levels defined by the federal poverty level (FPL): (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Increasing levels of child obesity are placing pressure on all children's services, including CAMHS. The need for input by mental health professionals is justified by the increased risk of depression, low self-esteem, binge eating, and impaired quality of life seen in obese children and adolescents. Two routes for CAMHS involvement with obese youngsters are described. Balance It!, a service operating in the NE England, is an example of a long-term approach involving Tiers 1-3 of CAMHS. Research testifies to the psychological value of weight loss. However, a series of questions remain regarding best practice, perceived need, and funding of CAMHS in child obesity.
This article discusses the impact natural disasters have on children, and the related traumatic stress response and post traumatic stress disorder often experienced by children. Treating children can be complicated and a developmentally appropriate intervention is needed. Evidenced-based research has shown play therapy to be a developmentally effective intervention with traumatised children. This article presents two case studies of play therapy with children affected by Hurricane Katrina. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Controlled studies show that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is an efficacious treatment for young people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). More evidence is needed for effectiveness in clinical settings. We conducted a case note review of 318 patients attending an OCD clinic. Outcomes for 75 patients who received treatment in the clinic were analysed. Following acute treatment, total CYBOCS (Children Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) score was significantly reduced (22.6 to 10.9, p = .0001). Gains were maintained at long-term follow-up. Our results suggest that CBT is an effective treatment for child and adolescent OCD delivered in a clinical setting. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Whilst much has been written about understanding the diagnostic and underlying pathological processes related to prenatal alcohol exposure, far less has been directed at the management of affected individuals. We undertake a review of the literature focusing on a range of interventions including psychological, social, educational, pharmacological as well recent advances and directions. This paper is designed to give an overview on the management of this complex disorder. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

The Communicative Development Inventories (CDIs) are parent report measures of vocabulary and other aspects of language development in very young children. They have evolved over the past 20 years to be one of the most well recognised assessments of infant language. Of particular significance is the fact that the CDIs are the first measures of their kind to be widely translated and adapted for use in many different languages. The inventories have served a variety of functions including measuring early language acquisition, deriving normative data on language acquisition, and both identifying and describing children whose early language is significantly delayed. This review describes the development of the CDIs, summarises the volume of research that has been generated in a range of applica...

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) for children and parents is an evidence based treatment approach for traumatised children. Evaluation of TF-CBT includes several randomised controlled trials, effectiveness studies and ongoing studies for children experiencing sexual abuse, domestic violence, traumatic grief, terrorism, disasters and multiple traumas. The model of TF-CBT described here is a flexible, components-based model that provides children and parents with stress management skills prior to encouraging direct discussion and processing of children's traumatic experiences. TF-CBT components are summarised by the acronym PRACTICE: Psychoeducation, Parenting skills, Relaxation skills, Affective modulation skills, Cognitive coping skills, Trauma narrative and cognitive ...

A longitudinal study was conducted of 50 at-risk poor readers who were seen at four assessment points between the ages of three years and nine months and 12[ndash]13 years. This provided a wealth of data about the incidence of reading problems, the course of developmental relationships among language and literacy skills and the factors that influence outcome (including risk and protective factors and co-morbid difficulties). The practical implications of this study are considered for the management of poor readers; including identifying children at-risk of dyslexia, assessing and teaching poor readers, addressing co-occurring difficulties, capitalising on compensatory or protective factors and providing emotional support.
The study investigated the emergence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in child and adolescent survivors in Turkey three years after the 1999 Marmara Earthquake, with consideration of the severity of exposure and the survivors' gender and age. A representative sample of 293 young earthquake survivors (152 female and 141 male between the ages of 8 and 15) participated in the study. Participants' scores on the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Reaction Index for Children indicated that 31.4% reported moderate, 24.2% reported severe, and 3.8% reported very severe traumatic stress reactions. Analysis of the Revised Impact of Events Scale for Children scores revealed that 56% reported severe PTSD symptoms. While severity of exposure and gender were significantly associated with sev...
