Review: The contribution of mindfulness‐based therapies for children and families and proposed conceptual integration

Conclusions:  There is increasing evidence that mindfulness‐based therapeutic techniques can have a positive impact on a range of outcome variables. A greater understanding of the mechanisms of change is an important future direction of research. We argue that locating mindfulness‐based therapies targeting children and families within the broader child and family field has greater promise in improving child and family functioning than viewing mindful parenting as an independent endeavor.
Collaboration and integrated services for perinatal mental health: an integrative review

Conclusion:  Perinatal mental health is an emerging field that is particularly challenging as it requires professionals to work across disciplines and timeframes, where there is a risk of dichotomising care, compounding existing barriers to service uptake. Professionals need resources and to feel supported to change clinical practice and work in more collaborative ways. The voices of women and families are missing in the literature.
Conclusion:  The fact that both broadband and narrowband scales showed significant improvements over the first 6 months of care establishes the possibility that these measures could be used in experimental designs studying comparative effectiveness.
Conclusions:  Findings suggest that current psychosocial interventions for children and adolescents with comorbid mental health disorders must be interpreted with caution, given many studies either do not measure intervention fidelity or have variable levels of fidelity adherence. Including fidelity components in future studies would aid in determining the effectiveness and generalizability of interventions targeted at children with comorbid disorders.
Conclusions:  Findings indicated that adolescents who reported experiencing peer rejection had higher levels of psychological distress. In addition, the lower the personal resources were, the higher the levels of psychological distress. Potency buffered the level of distress resulting from social rejection by peers. Compared to boys, rejected girls had lower potency levels. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Conclusion:  Inadequate liaison between child and adult services is a problem within the UK mental health system and detrimental to patient care. Recent national interest in establishing a more integrated family‐focused service is encouraging, but will take time to implement and will not replace the need for separate specialist services. Efficient clinical collaboration must be developed at local levels to create a more comprehensive management strategy for children and parents with concurrent mental health problems.

Conclusions:  The FLQ is a reliable measure of family function that seems sensitive to change. There is some evidence of validity but a lack of suitable comparators limited this part of the study. The study sample was too small to explore the scale structure.
Conclusion:  This study provides proof of concept that cCBT provided as a universal or targeted emotional health intervention in schools is viable and may result in immediate therapeutic benefits. These findings are limited by the small sample size and absence of follow‐up but suggest that more methodologically robust evaluations should be pursued.
Conclusions:  Anti‐social, aggressive behaviours were significantly correlated with an increase to the pattern of abusive internet use in both sexes. Boys and girls had distinct profiles of off‐line and online preferences. Boys tended to favour interest‐driven online activities as their levels of addictive behaviour increased while girls favoured communication‐driven online activities.
Effectiveness of Psychosocial Intervention for Children and Adolescents with Comorbid Problems: A Systematic Review

Conclusions:  While the overall quality ratings of the reviewed studies varied from mediocre to good, with a variety of measures used across studies to assess the same outcomes, findings suggest that current interventions are effective for reducing internalising and externalising problems in children with comorbidity. More substantive evidence for the beneficial effects of psychosocial interventions for children with comorbid problems may arise as more robust studies, which more explicitly address and describe comorbidity, become available.
Conclusions:  Early Opp/Agg and Att/Hi behaviour had differential effects on parenting stress at 21 months. The increase in parenting stress associated with early Opp/Agg behaviour may be linked to overall feelings of parental competence, whereas the course of Att/Hi behaviour may be associated with increased demands on parent‐child interactions and attachment. Our results have implications for development of early intervention programmes. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is often highly valued by the individual. This can result in the individual having ambiguous and ambivalent feelings towards change.
Concepts of parenting and their development are briefly reviewed, as well as the variety and scope of application of the term. Issues in relation to the assessment of parenting are discussed, and three questionnaire‐type measures are reviewed – the HOME Inventories, the Parenting Stress Index, and the Parenting Daily Hassles Scale. It is concluded that while these measures have a utility, theoretical developments in concepts of parenting will increasingly require the use of assessments more sensitive to the interactive and dynamic aspects of parenting. It seems probable that these will be observational methods or semi‐structured interviews, rather than questionnaires. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Conclusions: The study provides evidence in support of the therapeutic improvement achieved by some young people whose parents attended the group parent training programme. The programme had a significant impact on internalising as well as externalising problems. Further studies of the programme would benefit from being run as a randomised clinical trial.
Measures of Theory of Mind (ToM) in clinical disorders and conditions are reviewed, focusing on non-standard and advanced measures. Relevant studies linking these measures to social problems and cognitive symptoms are reviewed. The multifaceted nature of ToM is stressed and clinically relevant aspects of ToM are suggested. Strategies to select relevant measures for clinical research and practice are presented and examples are discussed in more detail. It is recommended to consider specific aspects of ToM in relation to specific clinical conditions and symptoms. Relationships between ToM and other cognitive deficits, and implications for clinical practice and intervention are also discussed. (Source: Child and Adolescent Mental Health)

Conclusions: The study's findings helped to inform the NICE guideline on ADHD by providing evidence that young people's experiences of medication were in general more positive than negative. All NICE Guidelines involving recommendations for the treatment of young people should draw on research evidence of young people's experiences of treatments.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents (IPT‐ A): Extending the Reach from Academic to Community Settings1

Depression is a persistent and impairing illness for adolescents. Many adolescents have limited access to care and/or do not receive adequate treatment for their depression. Researchers have developed a number of empirically supported interventions for adolescent depression; the challenge is to bring these treatments into community settings and assess their effectiveness under real world conditions. This paper provides a critical examination of research conducted on the use of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for depressed adolescents (IPT‐A). The paper presents evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of IPT‐A. Implementation and dissemination efforts are discussed in regard to lessons learned and directions for future research.
