We compared the dental assemblage of the Rhône Valley corridor (RVC) with that of European Neandertals dating to MOIS 7-4 using two linear measurements and three indices. To test if the RVC population was significantly different from Western European Neandertals, we preformed a multi-tiered approached. First, we tested for the normality of the variables using a Shapiro-Wilks test. If the variables were normal, a stepwise Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) (using Mahalanobis distances) was performed for the normally distributed variables. DFA uses correlation metrics to address weight combinations of variables and emphasizes between group variation while minimizing within group variation. Results show that there is no distinction be...

The aim of the study was to analyze possible human skeletal remains within the wrappings of a mummy from the Archaeological Museum, Zagreb, Croatia through the use of the multidetector CT (MDCT) technology. Plain X-ray films and MDCT images of the mummy were taken in both frontal and lateral views. In a single volumetric acquisition of the whole body by MDCT 0.75 mm axial slices were obtained and combined with sagittal and coronal reformatting and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction. Sex and age was assessed visually using standard anthropological methods. The results suggest that the mummy was of an adult female, most likely over 40 years of age at death. Pathologies observed included degenera...

In this paper we report the results of the microbiological analysis of the samples taken from the mummy from the collection of the Archaeological museum in Zagreb, Croatia. Samples were taken from specific places such as oral, orbital, abdominal cavity and bandages surrounding the mummy, and analyzed in Department of Microbiology and Hospital Infections in University Hospital "Dubrava" in Zagreb and in National Reference Laboratory for systemic mycoses of Croatian National Institute of Public Health in Zagreb. The analysis indicated that all of the found organisms were non-primary pathogenic and are not harmful for healthy humans. Isolated microorganisms mainly belonged to t...

Our aim was to explore and compare the job satisfaction between family physicians and hospital specialists in Split, Croatia. The survey was carried out in 2005 and 2006. A validated questionnaire was composed of two parts: 92 statements and questions about job satisfaction in the form of a Lickert scale (range 1-5) and eight questions concerning demographic issues. The questionnaire was completed and returned by 165 hospital specialists from the University Hospital and by 131 family physicians from the Split County. Response rate for family physicians was 39.81% and 41.46% for hospital specialists. Hospital doctors were divided in two groups: internal and surgical. There were no significant differences between family physic...

Since the dawn of civilisation visual communication played a role in everyday life. In the early times there were simply shaped drawings of animals, pictograms explaining hunting tactics or strategies of attacking the enemies. Through evolution visual expression becomes an important component of communication process on several levels, from the existential and economic level to the artistic level. However, there was always a question of the level of user reception of such visual information in the medium transmitting the information. Does physical positioning of information in the medium contribute to the efficiency of the me...

Aging of the population is a growing problem in all developed societies. The older people need more health and social services, and their life quality in there is getting more and more important. The study aimed at determining the characteristics of non-verbal communication of the older people living in old people's homes (OPH). The sample consisted of 267 residents of the OPH, aged 65-96 years, and 267 caregivers from randomly selected twenty-seven OPH. Three types of non-verbal communication were observed and analysed using univariate and multivariate statistical methods. In face expressions and head movements about 75% older people looked at the eyes of their caregivers, and about 60% were looking around, while laughing or pres...

Recent studies have shown that greater social support after combat stress is associated with better psychological posttraumatic outcomes. By comparison of a group of veterans (n = 71) who sought psychiatric help and were diagnosed with PTSD (clinical group) and a group of veterans (n = 43) without PTSD (control group) we examined various components of structural and functional social support in war veterans in Croatia. The measures of social support were assessed for two time periods: a) immediately after the war, and b) at the present time. Results of two-way analysis of variance indicate that veterans without PTSD tend to report significantly higher number of persons who provide them different fo...

The article describes the epidemiological characteristics of Q fever in Croatia, during the period before and after the Homeland War. In the ten years prior to the Homeland War (1983-1992) 1053 cases of Q fever were recorded, 16.2% (171) of which on islands and in coastal areas. In the period after the Homeland War (1995-2008), a total of 654 cases was recorded, 59.9% (392) of which on islands and in coastal areas. In addition to reduced incidence, geographic distribution of the disease also changed. Before the war, the highest morbidity rate was recorded in the Sisak-Moslavina County. After the war, the Split-Dalmatia County recorded the highest morbidity rate because in the post-war period sheep from Bosnia and Herzegov...

This study presents the incidence of major nonmelanoma skin cancers (major NMSCs), other nonmelanoma skin cancers (other NMSCs) and malignant melanoma (MM) in Croatia. The skin cancers recorded between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. Until 2003, the incidence of major NMSCs and other NMSCs was not estimated in Croatia. Incident cases of NMSCs were identified by the use of a questionnaire distributed to dermatology departments in Croatia and then collected at the University Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Zagreb University Hospital Center, and from the records kept at the National Cancer Registry. Incident cases of MM were extracted from the National Cancer Registry. During the 3-year period, 9,479 cases of major NMSCs are recorded, 4,622 (49%) ...

Experience with women of the target population, 50-69 years old, included in the mass screening programs, show the reduction in the specific mortality by 30%. One of the main problem in organizing the preventive programs is how to increase responsiveness of subjects to screening. In the study, based on the large sample of over 1000 of subjects and 20 family medicine practices, included in the investigation, we showed that it is possible, by a pro-active involvement of family physicians teams and intensive educational and motivational activities, to achi...

Primary gastric non Hodgkin lymphoma (PGNHL) is a distinct group of extranodal lymphomas with interesting geographical distribution and variable prevalence in different countries. We analysed epidemiological data of our patients with PGNHL in Primorsko-goranska County. Clinical data of 30 patients with PGNHL diagnosed and treated in Clinical Hospital Center of Rijeka, Croatia between January 1995 and December 2005 were prospectively analyzed. We used statistical analysis (t-test, chi2-test) for small groups. Out of 30 pts with PGNHL, 19 were born in Primorsko-goranska County, part of Croatia situated by the Adriatic sea which consists of three regions: City of Rijeka, Islands...

The study analyzed the prevalence and determinants of HIV-risks among female sex workers (FSWs) in Croatia and Montenegro. Face-to-face interviews were carried out in Zagreb, Split, and Podgorica during the 2006-2008 period. Croatian participants (n = 154) reported fewer clients, more consistent condom use, higher rates of HIV testing, and greater HIV knowledge. The participants interviewed in Montenegro (n = 119) were more likely to have injected drugs and to have experienced sexual abuse in the previous year. Although Montenegrin FSWs were more exposed to HIV-risks than Croatian FSWs, they reported lower HIV-risk self-assessment. Consistent condom use was significantly associated with education a...

HPV infections are common and the presence of the same high-risk type in cervical specimens can be due to reinfection or persistence. Persistent infection is the most important predictor for development of cervical carcinoma. The aim of this study was to validate PCR-RFLP with two sets of primers: MY09/MY11 that amplify a fragment of L1 and P1/P2 that amplify a fragment of E1 ORF. PCR product of MY09/MY11 was digested with a set of 6 restriction enzymes (RE) and PCR product of P1/P2 with a set of 12 RE. Cervical samples from 110 women patients of the University Gynecologic Clinic CHC Zagreb were analyzed. There were 98 (89.1%) PCR positive samples detected with P1/P2 pri...

The pathogenesis of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in preschool children with anatomically correct urinary tract (UT) is rather obscure. In girls, the bladder wall changes of cystitis cystica (CC) may be per se responsible for UTIs recurrence. During the 20-year period, 127 preschool children (125 girls; median age: 6.1 years) with CC, in whom UT anomalies were excluded, were diagnosed. The mean duration of UTIs symptoms prior to diagnosis was 3.31 +/- 2.51 years. Cystoscopical findings were labelled as mild, moderate and severe in 22.8%, 39.4% and 37.8% of patients, respectively. Following the confirmation of CC, long-term chem...

The role of macrophages acting as immunologic antitumor effectors and promoters of tumor growth are poorly understood as yet. We investigated the role of macrophage in model of concomitant immunity (CI), a phenomenon of secondary tumor rejection during the primary tumor growth. It has been shown that the period of CI weakening can coincide with appearance of tumor metastases. We used mammary carcinoma (MC) artificial lung metastases to evaluate the influence of macrophages from various period of CI on the development of metastases in mice. Our results indicated that macrophages are responsible for the late period of CI weakening and suppression. To investigate weather prostaglandins can mediate suppressive effect of macroph...

In conclusion, moderate elevated glucose concentration increased expression of cell adhesion molecules on HAEC. Insulin administration in the mild hyperglycaemia reduces an expression of the proinflammatory adhesion molecule E-selectin which could contribute in deceleration of macrovascular complications development in diabetic patients.

Although anatomical properties and vessel variations of the celiac trunk are well explored in the literature, there is not so much information on the arterial diameters, and this data is important for surgical procedures and angiographic examinations. The aim of this study was to investigate properties of the celiac trunk in humans by using anatomical dissection. Ninety cadavers were dissected for the celiac trunk identification and arterial diameter measurements. The results of anatomical examination showed that in 72% of all cases the celiac trunk divides into the splenic artery and the common hepatic artery, while the left gastric artery arises as a first branch and had origin between aorta,...

This study encompassed 75 patients who suffered from an acute medial femoral neck fracture and were treated with the implantation of a bipolar partial hip endoprosthesis. Their biomechanical status (stress distribution on the hip joint weight bearing area) and clinical status (Harris Hip Score) were estimated for the time prior to the injury and assessed at the follow-up examination that was, on average, carried out 40 months after the operation. Despite ageing, the observed Harris Hip Score at the follow-up examination was higher than that estimated prior to the injury (77.9 > 69.6; p = 0.006). Similarly, the hip stress distribution was reduced (2.7 MPa < 2.3 MPa; p = 0.001). While this reduction can be attributed to a loss of weight due to late ageing, the principal improvement cam...

Proximal femoral fractures, especially in elderly persons with osteoporosis, present a challenge for the traumatologist. While the dynamic hip screw (DHS) became the implant of choice for the treatment of stable fractures, the ideal implant for the treatment of unstable fractures remains an issue. In our experience, Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) is an excellent device for osteosynthesis as it can be easily inserted, it provides angular and rotational stability and allows early weight bearing on the affected limb. Between February 2007 and August 2009, 76 patients underwent the PFNA fixation for proximal femoral fractures (15 men and 61 women). Forty seven fractures were pertrochanteric, 14 subtrochanter...

The main goal of the study was to determine the constructive validity of Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices by means of item factor analysis. The most important topic within this objective is to determine the test dimensionality, since many authors report on finding several significant primary factors. The study included 2334 children aged 4 to 11. Several types of factor analysis were used in order to obviate the influence of technique on the results. Our data suggested 3 or 4 first order factors. Based on the usual McDonald definition, the primary factors obtained could be considered difficulty factors in the majority of cases. The necessary number of factors on age subsamples, extracted by parallel analysis, was between 3 and 5. Factor structur...

The aim of this study was to examine differences between health condition of the first permanent molar (M1) in children in 1977 and 2007. The materials for the study consisted of data on the health condition of M1 determined in a study in 1977 (Group I) for children from the district of Buje in Istria. The health condition of M1 was examined again in the same area in 2007 (Group II). The first permanent molar is most frequently affected by caries and represent a good indicator for general caries incidence of children. Study included 709 subjects in Group I (363 boys, 346 girls) and 460 subjects in Group II (242 boys, 218 girls), aged from 6 years and 0 months to 12 years and 5 months....

The purpose of this article is to illustrate a new classification of resin based aesthetic materials laying on the characterization of their matrix and their filler morphology. Four samples per material have been prepared for SEM evaluation. Each sample has been treated with chloroform to dissolve its matrix in order to evidence the filler morphology. A general schema of four different matrix systems which characterize the material's level of hydrophobicity can be put in evidence. The subsequent filler analysis individuates a more complex schema based on filler size and construction. A new classification based on matrix nature and filler morphology has been proposed. Based on this concept mechanical and aesthetic chara...

The resorption of the residual alveolar ridges is a chronic and continuous process of bone remodeling. The aim of this study was to analyse the rate of residual ridge resorption at different sites in the both jaws in complete denture wearers, through a five-year period of denture wearing. Residual ridge changes were measured on successive lateral cephalograms at 5 measurement points of the maxilla and the mandible. The first lateral radiograph was obtained at the delivery of complete dentures. The second lateral cephalogram was obtained after five years of denture wearing. Measurements were performed using a calibrated grid. The results of this study showe...

Mineral density of the sternum is insufficiently known. The aim of this research was to investigate mineralisation of the sternum and collect normative data on mineral density of the standard male and female sternum in elderly people (average age of female samples was 64 and male's was 62 years). The research was conducted on 93 cadaveric sternums, 56 male and 37 female samples. To determine regional mineral density of the sternum each sample was cut into six bony segments (Figure 1). Mineral density of every segment was determined using the method of ashing. Male sternums were on average denser than female ones in all segments. Average mineral density of the manubrium in women was 0.169 g/cm...

The patients with intensive pain caused by the vertebra body fracture were treated by application of low viscosity cement (LVC), (Vertebroplastic, DePuy) and high viscosity cement (HVC), (Confidence, DePuy,) into the body, by means of diascopy through unilateral transpendicular approach. Application of LVC was made in 75 patients, on 109 vertebrae, and HVC was applied in 12 patients on 14 vertebrae. Application of LVC was performed on 48 thoracic and 61 lumbar vertebrae and 5 thoracic and 9 lumbar vertebrae were stabilized with HVC. 43 patients were treated for malignancy and in 38 for osteoporosis. For LVC, preoperative VAS score was 8.32 and 2.23 (p < 0.00001) 24 hours after surgery, and it remained stable 3...

The aim of this research was to describe thyroid cartilage morphometry in the population of Eastern Slavonia in detail. The research was carried out on 68 samples of adult thyroid cartilages. There was statistically significant difference between all analysed parameters in male and female samples, except for the distance between the superior horns tips. All parameters had greater values in men, except for the thyroid angle, which was greater in women. There was significant correlation between most of the measured parameters. The strongest correlation was noticed in the distance between the horns at all measured levels and between the pairs of parameters measured for the left and...

Humans' proneness to see faces even in inanimate structures such as cars has long been noticed, yet empirical evidence is scarce. To examine this tendency of anthropomorphism, participants were asked to compare specific features (such as the eyes) of a face and a car front presented next to each other. Eye movement patterns indicated on which visual information participants relied to solve the task and clearly revealed the perception of facial features in cars, such as headlights as eyes or grille as nose. Most importantly, a predominance of headlights was found in attracting and guiding people's gaze irrespective of the feature they were asked to compare--equivalent to the role of ...

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the atherosclerotic changes in patients with vascular parkinsonism and in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, in order to evaluate the possible influence of the extracranial pathology of carotid arteries in developing lacunar cerebral infarcts. Degree of stenosis and plaque morphology of the extracranial part of carotids in both group of patients were evaluated by color Doppler flow imaging ultrasound investigation and the results were compared. We selected two matched groups of patients with parkinsonism: 22 patients with vascular parkinsonism, and 28 with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The atherosclerotic changes found in patients with Parki...

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a disorder characterized by disseminated thrombotic occlusions of the microcirculation. Identification of ADAMTS13 protease and its place in the pathophysiology of TTP led to better understanding of the disease and better survival for the diseased. Here we show a case report of a patient that had a normal ADAMTS13protease activity and an unusual clinical presentation and utilize that case to highlight how the absence of a severe ADAMTS13 protease deficiency does not preclude a diagnosis of TTP and how early initiation and continuation of plasma exchange therapy can lead to a positive outcome, even in a severely ill patient. Even though ADAMTS13 protease determination has no immediate influence...

Eating disorders in early childhood are the same frequency in boys and girls. During adolescence eating disorders are ten (10) times more frequent in girls than in boys. Worrying is the fact that eating disorders are the third chronic illness among adolescents after obesity and asthma. Depicting this adolescent we tried to show difficulty of treatment of this disorder, where in the beginning is important to stabilize body weight and prevent somatic damages such as: heart damage, amenorrhoea, changes in EKG (electrocardiogram) and electrolyte dysbalance that could endanger the life of patient. Simultaneously it is important to recognize and treat comorbid psychological disturbances such as in this ca...

Recurrent urinary inflammations treated with antibacterials, classic familial migraine, and allergy to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and chromium were favourable predisposing factors for the adverse event in this patient. A close chronological relation between administration of drugs (especially ibuprofen) and adverse reactions was noted. No evidence of infection and/or autoimmune disease was found. The mechanism of these serious events may be explained as a hypersensitive reaction affecting the meninges and, partially, cochle...

We reported 2 patients with severe pulmonary hypertension after valve surgery. Because of desperate clinical situation, we decided to use the combination of inhaled and intravenous milrinone. Inhaled milrinone was delivered by means of pneumatic medication nebulizer dissolved with saline in final concentration of 0.5 mg/ml. The nebulizer was attached to the inspiratory limb of the ventilator circuit, just before the Y-piece. We obtained satisfactory reduction in mean pulmonary artery pressure in both patients, and they were successfully extubated and discharged. Although it is a very small sample of patients, we conclude that the combination of inhaled and intravenous milrinone could be an effective treatment of secondary pulmonary hypertension in high-risk cardiac valve surgery patient.
We report a patient with acute surgical abdomen due to a duodenal perforation caused by inflammation of ectopic pancreatic tissue in duodenum and stomach. Histology of the resected duodenum and stomach demonstrated heterotopic pancreatic tissue acute inflammation without atypia, suggesting "pancreatitis of the duodenum and stomach". To date, there have been a few reports describing perforation of the stomach due to heterotopic pancreas. Therefore, the present case was considered to be a very rare case of this disorder. To conclude, heterotopic pancreas should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen.

Low-dose oral steroid therapies are very effective in active rheumatoid arthritis (RA), reducing disease activity in acute crisis either while waiting for disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) to take effect or if it was slow in response to DMARDs. However, long-term steroid therapies are associated with serious side effects, such as osteoporotic reduction of bone mass and frequent fractures. This paper reports a female patient who has suffered RA treated with low-dose oral steroid therapy in a long-term period. Suddenly, she developed severe pain and oedema of forefeet during home distance level walking, with no history of trauma. The diagnosis of spontaneous serial fra...

We present a 70-year-old man from Dalmatia, Croatia, with a history of prolonged high fever diagnosed as Q fever endocarditis. As far as we know, this is the first case of chronic Q fever in Croatia. The treatment was started as for culture-negative endocarditis, but was without clinical response. After significantly high anti-phase I IgG plus IgA antibodies titers to Coxiella burnetii were shown, the initial treatment with doxycycline was changed and ciprofloxacin was started with good clinical response.

Authors: Kasum M
The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is typically an iatrogenic complication of induction ovulation occurring during the luteal phase or early pregnancy. However, the spontaneous form of OHSS is extremely rare and always reported during pregnancy. Several cases have been observed during multiple pregnancies and other cases were associated with hypothyroidism. Moreover, a few mutations of the follicle-stimulation hormone receptor (FSHr) were recently described in spontaneous OHSS and normal levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). In these cases, a molecular basis for the pathogenesis of the spontaneous OHSS was identified. These mutations displayed promiscuous sensitivity and activation by both HCG and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The disease always...

The main processes involved in skin aging are intrinsic and extrinsic. Apart from them, so called stochastic aging connotes cell damage caused by metabolic processes, free radicals and cosmic irradiation. The clinical expression of intrinsic aging include smooth, dry, and thinned skin with accentuated expression lines. It is inevitable and time dependent. Extrinsically aged skin shows signs of photodamage which include appearance of wrinkles, pigmented lesions, actinic keratoses and patchy hypopigmentations. Therapeutic modalities imply photoprotection with sunscreens that prevent sunburns and block ultraviolet irradiation. Other modalities include use of retinoids which regulate gene transcription with subsequent ce...

A century ago, Thomas Hunt Morgan, the American scientist, studied the cytogenetic changes of drosophila and came to cytogenetic explanation of Mendel's basic laws of genetic heredity. These studies resulted in today's Mendel-Morgan chromosomal theory of heredity. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of this important discovery the authors have decided to give a review of the most significant achievements in the field of molecular genetics until the completion of the Human Genome Project. The most important points concerning the technology of DNA recombination and genetic engineering are also presented. The final section discusses the significance of previous achievements of molecular genetics in biom...

Flow cytometry (FC) immunophenotyping is an important tool in the evaluation of lymphadenopathy and is widely used in the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) on fine-needle aspirates of lymph nodes and extranodal sites. Because at least 80% of NHLs are of B-cell type, detection of immunoglobulin (Ig) light-chain-restriction is the most commonly used method for confirmation of monoclonality. The aim of our study was to evaluate usefulness of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) for FC analysis from deep-seated lymph nodes and to compare results of FC clonality analysis to cytomorphologic diagnosis of sampled lymph nodes. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) mostly occurs in chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Liver resection and liver transplantation (LT) represent potentially curative treatments of choice and if not feasible, palliative strategies such as percutaneous interventional techniques (PITs) and chemotherapy (ChT) are considered. Elevated alfa-fetoprotein, typical imaging pattern, needle core biopsy (NCB) and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) complement diagnostic assessment of HCC. We have retrospectively analyzed all patients with contraindications for NCB in which HCC was diagnosed by FNAC during consecutive 5 years in our hospital. The detection of specific chromosomal abnormalities is important in the diagnostic workup of aggressive lymphomas, giving its impact on the treatment strategies and prognosis. This has been accomplished by using the fluorescent in situ hybridisation method (FISH) performed on fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens what is attractive in the diagnosis of lymphoma in the comparation with other methods for collecting samples. The cytogenetic analyses were performed in series of 80 patients with lymphoma (43 women and 37 men, median age 48, range 3-90 years). In our series 89.0% (71) of the specimens yield sufficient numbers of analysable metaphases, comprising 63 non-Hodgkin lymphom...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the justification of Croatian modification of Bethesda classification after thirteen years of its application, answering the question if the subclassification of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) into cervical intraepithelial lesion (CIN) grade 2 (CIN2) and grade 3 (CIN3) is cytologically real and clinically justified. The retrospective study included 3110 women to whom cervical intraepithelial lesion of different grade was diagnosed by cytological examination of vaginal-cervical-endocervical (VCE) smear at Department of Clinical Cytology, Clinical hospital Osijek in period from 1993 to 2005. 57.1% of women were monitored cytologically and colposcopically, while 42.9% of them had also pathohisto...

Cytological criteria for the identification of glandular intraepithelial lesions (GIL) have not yet been fully described, especially for the precursors of adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), thus these lesions may frequently remain unrecognized. As most patients diagnosed with AIS or mild to moderate GIL (grades I, II) are free from clinical symptoms, cytology has a very responsible role in the detection of these lesions. The aim of the study was to achieve the most appropriate cytologic diagnosis of intraepithelial lesions of endocervical columnar epithelium, analyzing the cytology findings in patients with histologicall...

Serum proteins and immunoglobulin (Ig) findings in 119 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients were analysed. Out of them 96 (81%) patients had B non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL), and 23 (19%) T-NHL. Indolent type of NHL was more frequent (77 patients, 65%), then aggressive type of NHL (42 patients, 35%). Most patients had normal serum protein concentration, the increased protein concentration was seen in 17% of patients while decreased concentration was noticed in 7% of patients. Hypoalbuminaemia was more frequent (43%) then hyperalbuminaemia (1%). In contrast to albumin, low levels of other protein fractions (alpha1-, alpha2-, and beta-globulin) were rather rare (0.6%, 4%, and 3% of patients, respectively)...

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) can be detected in the cytologic smears years before invasive squamous cancer arises, but no reproducible morphologic criteria exist to predict behavior of cervical lesions. The possibility of predicting the clinical course of cervical lesions could be of high value in clinical practice and some women will spare of unnecessary treatment. HPV L1 capsid protein represents about 90% of the total protein on the surface of the virus and can be detected in mild to moderate dysplasia and rarely in severe dysplasia. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the use of immunodetection of HPV L1 protein on archival Pap smears with findings of mild and mode...

According to WHO classification follicular lymphoma (FL) is a neoplasm composed of follicle centre (germinal centre) B-cells, which usually has at least a partially follicular pattern. Bone marrow (BM) infiltration by lymphoma occurs in 40-70% of cases at the time of diagnosis. The characteristic chromosomal translocation of follicular lymphoma is t(14;18)(q32;q21) with transposition of BCL2 oncogene to the regulatory region of immunoglobulin heavy chain gene IgH. Aim of this study was to determine the frequency of PCR detection of IgH/BCL2 in DNA samples isolated from archival cytological slides of lymph node aspirates, bone marrow and/or peripheral blood (PB) obtained from patients with histologically co...

One of the criteria of selection for skin sparing mastectomy (SSM) with nipple areola complex (NAC) preservation is to exclude the neoplastic involvement of subareolar tissue (NAC base) in order to minimize the possibility of local recurrence. The most common way to assess the possible neoplastic involvement is intraoperative frozen section of the NAC base tissue. Because of its limitations, particularly the false negative results due to unsampling, we tried to use intraoperative imprint cytology for more thorough intraoperative assessment. The aim was to compare intraoperative imprint findings with the definitive histology of the NAC base, to evaluate diagnostic accura...

Knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors is increasing. At the same time, risk estimation becomes more and more difficult. The need for a more comprehensive, but more individually based approach is evident. To achieve this aim, we propose a systems biology approach in cardiovascular risk assessment. This means that a large amount of health data, describing many aspects of the health-status of patients, is collected and computed and the results are compared with existing knowledge. Finally, a clinical model is created, which can be the first step in ongoing research protocol, aimed at assessing cardiovascular risk. By using this approach, all potentially relevant risk factors can be identified on a small sample. Moreover, ris...

Early stage testicular seminoma is a radiosensitive tumor. Its incidence has significantly increased during the last decade especially in the young population. Although the therapy for testicular seminoma gives very satisfying results, the evaluation of genome damage caused by the therapy is of a great importance in order to recognize possible related health risks. The present study was performed on ten patients diagnosed with seminoma stage I; pT1/2N0M0S0, treated with adjuvant radiotherapy (a radiation dose of 25 Gy divided in 16 fractions) after orchidectomy. To assess the possible existence of an increased baseline DNA/chromosome damage in patients we also selected the appropriate contro...

In order to assess sex differences in body physique in Santhals, a cross sectional sample of 800 adult Santhals (400 males and 400 females) was collected from West Bengal (India) using multistage cluster random sampling. The present study aims to explore the body physique of Santhals of West Bengal, where both males and females do backbreaking labor work. This type of research is rare in tribal communities, especially in India. Anthropometric Somatotyping, the method forwarded by Heath and Carter, is followed in the present study, which is a technique of rating human body physique and composition through anthropometric measurements. The results suggest that the Santhal males and females are predominately Mesomorphic in their body physique. Mean somatotype of ...

The aim of this research was to check the validity of the weighed system of criteria for evaluating the actual quality of water polo players proposed by Hraste, Dizdar and Trninić. The authors have determined the attributes of the measurement instrument for assessment of the overall performance efficiency of elite water polo players. Based on the determined descriptive indicators, on the coefficients of the relative importance of criteria, and on the degree of the objectivity level (interobservers' agreement) of the expert evaluations, it can be concluded that the measuring attributes (objectivity and sensitivity) for most of the criteria are in accordance with their relative importance coefficients for a particular position in the game. Inter-population variation of cranial morphology, which plays an important role in human evolution studies and biological research, can be studied morphologically and metrically. Geometric morphometry compares body forms using specific landmarks determined by anatomical prominences. The aim of this study was to identify cranial shape differences between the crania of Byzantium period humans and modern humans. Variability in cranial shape was examined using the geometric morphometric technique based on landmark coordinates. Landmark coordinate data were collected from two-dimensional digital photogrammetry and were analyzed using generalized Procrustes analysis, hierarchical clustering and thin-plate spline analysis.

The aims of the study were to analyse characteristics of the Castanea airborne pollen and to compare aeropalynological data obtained from two sampling stations in north-west Croatia. The study was conducted in Zagreb and Samobor during the 2003-2006 periods, using the seven-day volumetric samplers of the Hirst design. In both study areas, the seasons of chestnut pollination were similar and lasted from June to the end of July, which is comparable to other European cities. A general rule was noticed--the shorter the main pollen season, the higher the pollen peak concentration. Although the pollen season of Fagales pollen is prolonged to summer in the area of inland west-north Croatia due to the genu...

This study clearly established the dimensions of problems in HIV/AIDS prevention onto which it should be influenced through regional and local measures and actions. The indexes measured indicate which special initiatives and programs should be focused and set up as priorities in particular regions. The determined differences point to the need for a regional approach to HIV/AIDS prevention in purpose of improving preventive activities according to most common risk behaviors. Even though Croatia is a relatively small country, it has many regional and local features which need to be taken into consideration when developing prevention programs and activities.

This report also examined the covariations between pairs of anthropometric and synthetic traits (length measurements and LF vs. height; circumference measures and CF vs. weight and BMI; LF vs. CF). Significant genetic correlations among all the studied traits (except for middle finger length vs. height) confirmed the influence of pleiotropy on genetic determination of these phenotypes. Bivariate analysis showed that pleiotropic effects had a great influence in determining body traits variation within body length measurements, as well as between body circumferences and weight or BMI. In relation to the two synthetic traits, even the variation of body lengths and circumferences was highly determined by genetic factors, shared genetic influences were unlikely to explain much of the observed v...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of visual evoked potential (VEP) testing in detecting retinal ganglion cell damage in patients with Diabetes Mellitus type I (DMI). VEP arise before diabetic retinopathy signs become ophthalmoscopically detectable. VEP testing was performed in 45 patients divided into three groups; 15 children with recently discovered DMI, 15 children with long-lasting DMI, and 15 healthy children as the control group. A statistically significant difference in VEP P100 wave amplitudes (Z = 4.02, p < 0.001) and latencies (Z = -4.66, p < 0.001) was found between children with established DMI and those with recently discovered DMI. TLIF (transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion) is a method of interbody fusion, which is alternative to other vertebral fusion wherein, with an approach through intervertebral foramen, through lateral segment of intervertebral space, complications occurring with other methods are reduced. Today, there are numerous versions of this method in terms of implants and transplants. At our Department patients with axial pain resistant to conservative treatment of minimum six months underwent TLIF method with unilateral transpendicular fixation with polyaxial screws, CAGE filled with autologous transplant obtained by lamina resection, and posteromedial contralateral fusion. 22 procedures were performed at 22 levels, 10 for relapsing hernia, and 12 for di...

This study focuses on two important questions concerning the admixture and origin of African Pygmies. Ethnographic observations suggest a sex-biased gene flow between the Bantus and Pygmies, an issue which could be clarified through genetic analyses may shed light. A study of intrapopulational variation of mtDNA and Y-chromosome produces results in accordance with the hypothesized matrimonial behaviour. In fact, while shared mitochondrial haplotypes belonging to the L1c5 (or L1c1a1 clade) sub-haplogroup provides evidence of a Pygmy-to-Bantu female biased gene flow, a male biased gene flow from Bantu to Pygmies is supported by the distribution of the Y-chromosomes bearing M2 mutation. The second part of our study regards the question of the genetic relationships between Western and Eastern ...

Through advancing new technology, perspective of museum institution and museum profession is changed. The content analysis and analyze of used terminology by online users will show us which term is the most used between frequently used terms such are: online, electronic, Web, Internet, digital, virtual and cyber museums. This scientific paper suggests that online users don't differ mentioned terms while they search for museums on Web. Using the appropriate 'prefix" in order to better describe the typology of a museum on the Web is the first step in designing the future of the museums and certainly encourages serious approach in to the study of the new museum "entities".

Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour and leading cause of death in women aged 35 to 64 years in Istria County. The minimal invasive carcinoma and in situ carcinoma have a better prognosis so we try to find them during preventive exams. The aim of this study was to identify minimal breast cancers in fine needle aspiration biopsies of breast lesions made in Pula General Hospital between the years 2006 and 2008. There were 39 tumours with a maximal diameter of less than 10 mm in 1316 biopsies and 251 cytologically diagnosed breast cancers. In most cases, they were solitary, well differentiated neoplasms (48.7%). They were diagnosed in women aged 39 to 89 years and most frequently found in women aged 60 to 69 years. Th...

Authors: Lozić AA, Silconi ZB, Misljenović N
Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer (about 80% of all lung cancers). It grows and spreads more slowly than small cell lung cancer, but still, when the primary tumour treatment starts, about 60% of patients with cancer already have some kind of malignant cell spreading. Metastases to hand bones and skeletal muscles are very rare (metastatic hand lesions represent 0.1% of all osseous metastases while metastases to muscles represent from 0.8 to 16% incidence in autopsy series); in case of metastases in such sites it can be usually expected to find metastases disseminated all over the body. Fine needle aspiration cytology has an important role to give accurate diagnosis or at least diagnosis of suspicion and t...

In this study, Pap test was positive in 3.77% (n = 2). National screening programme should be focused on the participation of all personally invited women, especially younger age groups and under-screened women. Well designed information campaign should be implemented in national screening programme.

The association between aplastic crisis and human parvovirus (HPV) B19 infection has been described in patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS). Most cases of aplastic crisis in patients with HS induced by HPV B19 have been reported in children and adolescents. In this paper, we describe an aplastic crisis induced by HPV B19 in the 34 year old female as an initial presentation of HS. Although other viral illnesses cause some decompensation in HS, the anemia is rarely as profound as seen in acute HPV B19 infections.

We report a case of a complete, ectopic blind-ending ureteral duplication in a 26-year-old man who presented with the symptoms of an acute urinary tract infection for the first time. Since anamnestic data and clinical examination indicated a complicated urinary infection he was referred for further examination. On the left side, the imaging studies revealed a normal ureter draining the lower pole of the kidney and a blind-ending ureter with ectopia in the seminal vesicle. The patient recovered completely following surgical removal of the blind-ending ureter.

We report a case of a 6-week-old boy who presented with a fever, diffuse rash, disseminated intravascular coagulation, hypofibrinogenemia, hypertrigliceridemia, hepatosplenomegaly, leukocytosis with 90% of lymphocytes, granulocytopenia, anemia, trombocytopenia, hyperferritinemia and pathological findings in cerebrospinal fluid. The patient had decreased frequency of NK cells and low NK cell activity in peripheral blood. Bone marrow aspiration analysis showed degenerative changes of histocyte cells, with preserved cytophages (lymphophages and erythrophages) consistent with hematophagocytic syndrome. Given that the molecular diagnosis of the known mutations in genes PRF1 and UNC13D showed a mutation in UNC13D, the diagnosis of familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis subtype 3 was establi...

In conclusion, in cases of bone marrow infiltration with primitive, immature cells, RMS should be considered as differential diagnostic possibility. Adjuvant technologies (cytochemistry, immunocytochemistry, cytogenetic analysis, flow cytometry, and molecular analysis) can be very helpful in diagnostic work-up, and may lead to definitive diagnosis in some cases.

Myeloid sarcoma is a tumor mass with extramedullary growth pattern, composed of myeloblasts or immature myeloid cells. The development of myeloid sarcoma may precede or concur with acute or chronic myeloid leukemia (AML or CML) or other myeloproliferative diseases or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Isolated myeloid sarcoma of the breast is very rare. A case is presented of a 25-year-old, previously healthy woman that presented to our department for a palpable node, 5 x 2 cm in size, in the upper medial quadrant of her left breast. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) produced a sample consisting of medium sized blasts. Additional work-up revealed anemia, thrombocytope...

We present a patient with angiosarcoma which developed 12 years of the diagnosis of breast carcinoma and 8 years of the operative procedure and radiotherapy for disease recurrence. A small angiomatous lesion of a few mm in size, cytologically suspect of vascular tumor (hemangioma or hemangiopericytoma) and histopathologically verified to be an atypical vascular lesion, was detected two years before breast enlargement and cytologic and histologic diagnosis of angiosarcoma. The patient died 15 months of the diagnosis of angiosarcoma, after two tumor recurrences and intrathoracic cavity invasion.

We present a case of 49-year old woman with vulvar symptoms of pruritus, who had liver and kidney transplantation two years ago. During the standard gynecological examination the vulvar smear was taken for cytological evaluation. The smear was scanty, with inflammatory background, overloaded with squamae. There were two types of cells: dysplastic squamous cells from lower layer of the epithelium and the single, anaplastic cells with a high nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio who possessed eccentric, large nucleus. Nucleoli were rare. Cytoplasm varied from pale and delicate to densely basophilic. Accordingly, cytological diagnosis vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN III) with differential diagnosis of vulvar Paget's disease was made. The coexistence of chronic lymphocytic (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the same patient has only been reported occasionally. Most of these cases represent the patients who developed CLL during the course of CML. Reviewing the literature, only a few cases of simultaneous occurrence of CLL and CML were found. Here we represent a previously healthy 50-year old man in whom the diagnosis of CLL and CML was established by FNAB of the bone marrow. The diagnosis was then confirmed by histopathology, immunophenotypization of the peripheral blood and by a cytogenetic study of the bone marrow. Four years after the diagnosis the patient is well, with leucocytosis of 40 x 10(9)/L, and lymphocytosis of 93%.

Acute basophilic leukaemia is very rare disease comprising less than 1% of all acute myeloid leukaemias. Morphological characteristic of leukaemic blast cells is moderately basophilic cytoplasm containing a variable number of coarse basophilic granules. The most characteristic cytochemical reaction is metachromatic positivity with toluidine blue. Blast are myeloperoxidase negative. Also leukemic blasts express myeloid and monocyte markers. There is no consistent chromosomal abnormality identified in this leukaemia. This is the first reported case of acute basophilic leukaemia in patient with Klinefelter syndrome. A 49-year-old woman presented for hirsutism, deep voice and hypertension. Ultrasonography (US) revealed a solitary tumor mass, eight cm in size, of the right adrenal gland. Laboratory tests showed it to be a hormonally active, androgen secreting tumor (elevated testosterone level), which was consistent with the clinical picture of the disease. After histopathological analysis tumor was signed out as adrenocortical carcinoma, a low risk carcinoma according to Weiss' classification. One year later on regular follow up, US revealed a suspicious growth measuring 65 x 43 mm in the projection of the lower pole of the right kidney.
We report a case of T-ALL with atypical cytological presentation which showed lymphoblasts with homogenous nuclear pattern, larger amounts of cytoplasm with vacuoles and prominent nucleoli. A 56-year-old male was hospitalized due to high fever and kidney infection. Further examination confirmed anemia, thrombocytopenia, normal level of white blood cells and high level of lactat-dehydrogenase (LDH). Bone marrow aspiration revealed 87% and peripheral blood 41% of lymphoblasts with cytoplasmic vacuoles which suggested Burkitt lymphoma (BL) morphology. Patient's karyotype showed no chromosomal aberations. Identification of immunophenotype discovered cells which were CD2 and CD3 positive and CD20 negative with focal acid phosphatase activity in 67% of blasts. This excluded Burkitt lymphoma and ...

We present a case of a 19-month year old boy with SPTCL diagnosed and successfully treated in our institution. Disease first presented with symptoms of high fever and painful erythematous nodule located below the umbilicus. Later on the infiltrates appeared on the face, legs, arms and the back of the body. As the most decisive in obtaining the diagnosis, skin biopsy showed atypical, small to medium-sized lymphatic cells infiltrating the deeper dermal layers as well as the subcutaneous adipous tissue surrounding the adipocytes. Immunohystochemical analysis showed neoplastic lymphocytes positive for CD2, CD3, CD5, CD7, CD8, Tia-1, granzyme B and perforine, and negative for CD20, CD34, TDT and CD56. No infiltration of blood vessels or epidermis was evident. Specific T-cell lymphomas protocol ...

Authors: Roganović J
Ganglioneuromas are rare, benign, slow-growing tumors originating from sympathetic ganglion cells. The most common locations are the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Pelvic ganglioneuroma is very rare. The case of a 12-year-old girl with presacral ganglioneuroma is reported. The importance of considering a confident preoperative diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration biopsy is stressed.

The diagnosis was made initially on fine needle aspiration cytology that was performed by ultrasound guidance and confirmed subsequently by histology. FNA cytology may be very useful to determine diagnosis before excision.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is uncommon cutaneous malignant neuroendocrine tumour of the elderly people with rapidly growing skin nodules found frequently on sun-exposed areas of the body. MCC is often an aggressive tumour with high tendency for local recurrence, lymph node involvement and distant metastases. This paper reports a case of metastatic MCC diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), flow cytometric deoxiribonucleated acid (DNA) analysis, pathohistology and electron microscopy. The cytological features in aspirate (stained with Papenheim and Papanicolaou staining) included increased cellularity, discohesive groups of small-to-medium size malignant cells with uniform, round-to-oval ...

We report a case of synchronous bilateral breast cancer with ductal and medullary carcinoma. A 60-year-old woman presented with lesion in both breasts which were mammographically found two years ago. Ultrasonography proved two suspected masses in breasts. Fine needle cytology was performed and confirmed bilateral carcinoma but with different cytological findings. The cytological feature of the left breast suggested ductal carcinoma and of the right breast raised possibility of a medullary carcinoma. Patient underwent bilateral quadrectomy with evacuation of axillary lymph nodes. Histological examination showed bilateral carcinoma with two different histological features: ductal in the left and medullary carcinoma in the right breast.

Transformation of leukemic cells is associated with delay in maturation and in apoptosis, and to altered responsiveness to growth factors. However, some studies have revealed that Fas (CD95/APO1) which mediates apoptotic signal and decrease of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 are frequently observed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) M4/M5 leukemic cells. The aim of the study was to compare cytomorphology and cytochemistry of bone marrow (BM) apoptotic leukemic cells to preserved peripheral blood (PB) leukemic cells in our patient, a 76-year-old man with AML-M5b treated at Zagreb University Hospital Center. BM and PB of the AL patient were analyzed after Pappenheim and c...

We present the case of a 66-year-old male patient with bilateral laryngomucoceles and laryngeal squamos cell carcinoma. A systematic hystological examination of whole organ sections showed that the submucosal spreading of cancer around the saccular necks on both sides caused stenosis which probably created a one-way valve mechanism allowing air to enter the saccule but not to exit. Progression of the tumor completely obstructed the laryngeal opening, leading to glandular secretion stagnation and formation of laryngomucoceles.

The knowledge that the persistent infection with high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) is the etiological factor in the development of cervical cancer has led to the development of the HPV DNA detection methods as well as the prophylactic vaccine against the most common HR-HPV types, HPV 16 and 18. Despite HPV vaccination, cervical cancer screening will remain the main preventive measure for both vaccinated and non-vaccinated women, but the nature of screening and management of women with cervical disease is being adapted to the new technologies. Although, HPV DNA detection is more sensitive that cytology, its specificity is lower, since most HPV infections are transient. Therefore, other methods are considered to improve the...

Clinical cytology is a diagnostic branch of medicine, best known by the Papa test in gynaecology. But, cytology can be applied in almost all fields of clinical medicine. Its advantages--high accuracy, simplicity, with little or no aggressiveness and low cost--are not used as widely as they could be. Medical practice, as well as medical research, and also medical education, are nowadays often directed at profitable use and not at the real benefit of the patient. Primary practitioners do not have enough chance to get acquainted with clinical cytology as a whole although they need true information, based on the cost-effectiveness and patient-benefit. A panel discussion on this subjec...

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, together with imaging, has become a primary diagnostic modality for investigation of pancreatic mass lesions, both cystic and solid. Advances in imaging techniques have enhanced our ability to recognize and delineate pancreatic masses and to detect them earlier as smaller mass lesions. However, definitive management often cannot be based on clinical and radiological features alone. Despite the advances in the imaging techniques, management options for patients are limited and a malignant diagnosis of solid lesions still carries a high mortality rate. The importance of a cytopathologist in preoperative diagnosis, as a member of the multidisciplinary team, is exemplified in the management of patients with neoplastic cysts. This is ...

Authors: Pavić T, Hrabar D, Duvnjak M
A subepithelial mass is a common finding during endoscopic procedures. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an important diagnostic modality in the evaluation of subepithelial lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. EUS is the diagnostic test of choice to assess the size, margins, the layer of origin, echotexture, and to differentiate between an intramural and extramural lesion. However, the EUS imaging lacks the specificity. EUS-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) or core biopsy can help establish a tissue diagnosis and potentially characterize malignant risk. The aim of this article is to review the diagnosis and management of the most common subepithelial gastric lesions with an emphasis on the role of endoscopic ultrasound.

Based upon an individual's molecular make-up, personalized molecular medicine provides information regarding the origin of disease, its treatment and progression, while personalized molecular pharmacology advises on drug prescription and patient response to it, thus ensuring drug effectiveness and preventing drug toxicity or lack of response. Interindividual differences in drug responses are mostly due to structural variation in parts of genome, e.g. in genes participating in drug metabolism, transport or targeting. However, a wide variety of diseases and accompanying health conditions, including patient's therapy or drug response, also have epigenetic or epigenomic etiology. High priority for personalized oncologic rese...

In last decade suicide attempts and suicides among youngsters are increasing greatly and are one of the leading causes of mortality in this age group. Epidemiological data are pointing on more frequent trend of self-destructive behavior among youngsters in the world as well as in our country. Risk factors which influence on increasing number of suicide attempts and suicides in this age are different in etiology: interference of genetic influences, family dynamics and external environment (school, friends, social environment, peers, television, video, and internet). Croatia as a country in transition is also following trends in the world according to epidemiological data, what is for sure great challe...

Toll-like receptors are key players in initiation of innate immune response of the host. In addition to innate immunity they can also induce adaptive immune responses. The concept that inflammation can promote chronic prostatic diseases, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate carcinoma is supported by several new findings. Epidemiological data have correlated prostatitis with an increased risk of prostate cancer, while PCR-based analyses of bacterial colonization in prostate cancer specimens and normal prostate tissue showed high correlation of bacterial colonization and chronic inflammation with a diagnosis of prostate carcinoma. Even evidence from genetic studies support the hypothesis that prostate inflammation may be a cause of prostate cancer. From these...

We have performed cytogenetic analysis and recently fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) on 43 cases of MM. Clonal chromosomal changes were present in 24 (56%) cases. Hyperdiploid karyotype was found in 12 (50%) cases, hypodiploid in 8 (33%) cases, and 4 (17%) cases had a pseudodiploid karyotype. The most common numerical abnormalities were gains of whole chromosomes 15, 11, 3 and 6. Whole chromosome losses were also frequent involving chromosomes X, 13, 14, and 8. Most cases showed also structural rearrangements 71% (n = 17):...

Transcription factors from the Ikaros family are involved in lymphocyte differentiation and have a critical role at specific check points of the haemopoietic pathway. However, how developmentally regulated changes are reflected in gene expression programs of lymphocyte differentiation is not well understood. It has been suggested that disregulation of transcription factors from the Ikaros family is associated with the development of different human leukemias. In this work we analyzed the state of Ikaros family members in different leukemic cells with the aim to explore the transcriptional control of human hematopoietic lineages and shed some new light on our understanding of transcription factor significance in hu...

Renal biopsy is a gold standard for establishing diagnosis of acute rejection of the renal allograft. However, being invasive, renal biopsy has potential significant complications and contraindications. Therefore, possibility to noninvasively diagnose acute rejection would improve follow-up of kidney transplant patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate urine immunocytology for T cells as a method for noninvasive identification of patients with acute renal allograft rejection in comparison to renal biopsy. In this prospective study a cohort of 56 kidney, or kidney-pancreas transplant recipients was included. Patients either received their transplant at the University Hospit...

The aim of the study was to determine the value and limitations of cytology in diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) as well as differentiation between these two entities. We analysed the FNA cytodiagnoses and histopathological reports, as well as treatment and survival in 89 newly diagnosed consecutive patients with these lymphomas treated in our clinical department. These patients (40 male, 49 female; age range 16-93 years; 44 in clinical stages I-II; 38 with B symptoms) were diagnosed and treated during a period of 64 months (1.1. 2004-1.5.2009). The FNA cytodiagnoses were available in 86 patients and the pathohistolog...

The aim of this retrospective study was to answer the following questions: 1) is HPV DNA test for high-risk types able to predict lesion behaviour in women with cytological abnormalities lower than CIN3 (ASC-US, CIN1 and CIN2); 2) how to predict the histological diagnosis CIN3, and 3) is its use in diagnostic management in these patients justified or not? The study included 345 women (11 ASC-US, 312 CIN1 and 22 CIN2) that underwent conventional diagnostic management (repeat cytology and colposcopy with or without histology) and HPV testing for high-risk HPV types by PCR method. The value of HPVDNA test in predicting lesion regression/persistence was assessed in 275 subjects without histology...

US-guided fine needle aspiration cytology is currently the best diagnostic tool for thyroid nodules. The aim of this research was to make a detailed and objective determination of the morphological characteristics of cells in cytological smears in an attempt to distinguish benign from malignant follicular tumors. The research included 62 patients with cytologically diagnosed follicular or oncocytic tumors, and 15 patients with nodular hyperplasia. Echographic findings were divided into three groups: isoechogenic, hypoechogenic and hyperechogenic nodules. We analyzed the cellularity of the smear, cohesion between follicular cells, acinar formations, bare nuclei, characteristics of the nucleus and the cytoplasm, and the presence of colloid. The st...

We present 6 cases of PM, correctly diagnosed preoperatively by FNA. Clinical, cytomorphologic and basic morphometric features were analyzed, and compared with 4 cases of malignant tumors with similar clinical presentation. Morphometric data (longest nuclear diameter) did not prove to be helpful, while basophilic cytoplasmatic protrusions, observed in all 6 analyzed cases, could be useful additional cytomorphologic feature of PM. We concluded that cytomorphologic characteristics of PM are reliable enough for correct preoperative diagnosis in adequate specimens, however the best results are achieved when FNA is performed by an experienced cytologist, and when all relevant clinical data are obtained.

Lymphocytic alveolitis is a characteristic of diverse interstitial lung diseases (ILD-s), but macrophages are often more numerous cell population in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Aim of this study is to analyze morphometric characteristics of macrophages nuclei in BALF in patients with ILD-s and to detect possible differences allowing distinguishing sarcoidosis from other lymphocytic alveolitis ILD-s. Thirty-one patient with interstitial lung disease who had lymphocytic alveolitis in BALF cell count (17 sarcoidosis and 14 other ILD-s) and nine controls were included in the study. The following patients data were numbered: age, lymphocyte percentage and CD4...

Differentiation between benign and malignant biliary strictures is critical to the provision of adequate treatment. Brush cytology during the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the most commonly used method for obtaining tissue confirmation of the nature of biliary strictures. It's specificity is remarkably high but reported sensitivities for the diagnosis of malignancy are low. Aim of our study was to assess sensitivity and specificity of biliary brush cytology in our institution, to find out main causes of false negative diagnoses and to confirm impression that the team approach has impact on sensitivity. Gold standard for diagnosis was definitive surgical histology or ade...

This study included 115 synovial fluids obtained by fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the swollen knee from the patients in the period between 2003 and 2008. At our department the urgent cytological examination of the synovial fluids consisted of macroscopic analysis that includes volume, colour, clarity, viscosity and mucin clot test, native microscopic analysis for crystals and tissue fragments, counting the total nucleated cell count and semiquantitative microscopic analysis for neutrophil granulocyte percentage on the slides stained with Hemacolor rapid staining. All cytological analyses were done within one hour since FNA. According to our results the clarity, viscosity, mucin clot test, the total nucleated cell count and the neutrophil granulocyte percentage enabled distinction between...
