Conclusion: Radiological diagnosis of IHL is possible in a majority of cases, but sometimes features may overlap with hepatoblastoma and fine needle aspiration may be performed inadvertently. Characteristic kinked nuclei and intermixed normal liver tissue might suggest IHL in the differential diagnosis of a spindle cell vasoformative tumour. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: Aspirates from WT were triphasic or biphasic in the majority (72.7%), permitting cytological diagnosis, which was improved by cytokeratin immunocytochemistry. Blastemal and stromal predominance on histology correlated well with cytology, but many triphasic tumours showed only blastema on aspiration. Anaplastic WT can be detected on aspirates using criteria similar to histology. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: NE-DCIS has distinctive cytological features and can therefore be diagnosed as a neuroendocrine tumour in most FNAs and some nipple discharge smears by cytological examination employing immunohistochemical techniques. We emphasize that a breast lesion with these features may be in situ and not invasive, and also that there is a risk of under-diagnosis. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: The making of an additional LBC slide helps in achieving a diagnosis in cases classified as non-diagnostic on the first standard slide (52.1% recovery rate). This procedure is particularly helpful for meeting the adequacy criteria in benign and indeterminate lesions and could also be used for refining the diagnosis of suspicious for a malignant thyroid neoplasm.
Conclusions: The gross appearances of FNA samples can usually predict the adequacy of the samples and sometimes predict the final microscopic diagnosis.
Conclusions: Angiosarcomas are difficult to recognize on FNA smears when they lack the typical dual, spindle and epithelioid cell population and when they occur in internal organs where carcinomas are more common. Very few reliable data are available concerning specificity of CD31 on cytological material. (Source: Cytopathology)

S. E. H. Cameron, R.S. Andrade and S.E. Pambuccian Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration cytology: a state of the art review Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a recently developed, accurate, safe and cost-effective technique that allows sampling of mediastinal lymph nodes and peribronchial lesions including pulmonary and mediastinal lesions. Its major indications are the nodal staging of non-small cell carcinomas of the lung, their restaging after chemotherapy and/or radiation, the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and of metastases from extrathoracic malignancies, and the diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy and masses of unknown aetiology. From our experience at the University of Minnesota and a comprehensive review of t...

Conclusions: The results of this study revealed that applying diagnostic criteria used in CCP to LBC was easy to achieve, because LBC had excellent cytoarchitectural preservation and cells were well presented. Although we have not examined all cytological features of malignancy and have not considered atypical hyperplasia, we believe that this method may be a useful tool in the diagnosis of endometrial cytology.
Conclusion: These results indicated that EMMPRIN expression correlates significantly with the degree of dedifferentiation of thyroid carcinoma. This study demonstrates the feasibility of expression of EMMPRIN using fine needle aspiration samples. Therefore, immunocytochemical analysis of EMMPRIN may be a novel aid to evaluate the differentiation of thyroid carcinoma. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: EUS-FNA has a very high sensitivity and accuracy for pancreatic solid lesions, but the sensitivity for cystic lesions is generally low. Cyst fluid chemical analysis for CEA is helpful, but the overlap between mucinous neoplasm and non-neoplastic cysts is significant. Recognizing GI contamination is important and immunohistochemical stains are useful for GI submucosal spindle cell lesions. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: FNA is an important tool for assessing the cause of lymphadenopathy in HIV patients. Necrotizing inflammation is more often seen in patients with low CD4 counts. AFB are commonly found in necrotic aspirates with or without granulomas. However, a stain for AFB should be performed in all aspirates from HIV-related lymphadenopathy including reactive hyperplasia.
Cell blocks allow reliable evaluation of expression of basal (CK5/6) and luminal (CK8/18) cytokeratins and smooth muscle actin (SMA) in breast carcinoma

Conclusion: The identification of CK5/6, CK8/18 and SMA by immunohistochemistry in cell blocks can be a reliable method that yields results close to those obtained in surgical specimens, and can contribute to the classification of breast carcinomas with luminal and basal expression patterns, providing helpful information in the choice of treatment and in the evaluation of prognostic and predictive factors.
Conclusions: The penile skin-lined neovagina of transsexual women can reflect the cytological findings present in biological women. However 'normal' cervical cytology, with superficial, intermediate and parabasal cells as well as Döderlein bacilli, was found in only 4% of transsexual women. Although one patient's Pap test showed koilocytes and was HR-HPV positive, no high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions were identified. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusion: FNAC of ovarian masses is a minimally invasive procedure that can differentiate neoplastic from non-neoplastic ovarian lesions. It may help avoid unnecessary operations and preserve the reproductive ability in young patients. Furthermore, it also enables a satisfactory sub-categorization of ovarian tumours, which facilitates the choice of appropriate therapy. (Source: Cytopathology)

Adenoid cystic pattern in follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma: a report of four cases

Conclusions: Adenoid cystic areas with morula-like groups in PCT are a rare finding. Cytopathologists and clinicians should be aware of these distinct features in thyroid tumours to avoid diagnosing metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma. It is also important to rule out CMV-PCT since that variant is mostly associated with familial adenomatous polyposis, although sporadic occurrence is known. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusion: The assay was able to detect multiple HPV infection with a wide range of genotypes in LBC samples sent for routine cytological analysis. It would be suitable for use in a cytopathology laboratory. The results of the assay show that the genotype profile has some variation from other geographical regions, and more work is needed to determine population prevalence, to ascertain the impact of the HPV vaccine, to evaluate test for cure and HPV triage management.
Conclusion: Tonsillar aspiration is a safe procedure and is useful in the evaluation of tonsillectomy specimens.
Conclusions: FNAC should be evaluated carefully regarding the presence of SRCs when cells with a plasmacytoid appearance are observed in either hyper- or hypocellular smears. The presence of single SRCs in FNACs with hypercellularity, high nuclear grade and tubular formation or tumour giant cells may be a clue in favour of ductal carcinoma. The presence of single SRCs in FNACs with hypocellularity and mild to moderate nuclear grade may be suggestive of lobular carcinoma. However, larger studies would be needed to establish the predictive value of the presence of SRCs on FNAC. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusion: Molecular cytopathology is a powerful tool that can complement morphology and immunohistochemical assessment of cytological material in routine practice for the diagnosis and prognostication of GISTs. We briefly discuss the advantages and limitations of the fine needle method of obtaining tissue for the diagnosis and prognostication of GISTs, and its current therapeutic strategies.
Conclusions: There is increasing evidence that a cytological diagnosis of ChRCC is possible. In our experience the histopathological features of ChRCC were well reflected in cytological samples, allowing specific recognition. In our cases the main differential diagnosis considered was clear cell carcinoma. Cytology can be especially helpful in the evaluation of intraoperative samples. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: Although the sample size was small, based on the observation that HR-HPV 16 and 18 contributed significantly to the overall HPV prevalence in our setting, we speculate that testing/prophylaxis for these prevalent high-risk types could perhaps make cervical cancer screening and preventive programmes cost-effective. Larger community-based studies on HPV prevalence and persistence are required to validate these findings before definitive recommendations can be made to the policy makers.
Conclusions: The results showed that follicular cells that exhibit some of the features of papillary carcinoma could be observed in a cytology slide of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, leading to a diagnostic pitfall. In addition, cellularity and overlapping cytological criteria in hyperplasia might lead to a false diagnosis. (Source: Cytopathology)

Discussion/conclusion: This method of producing control material establishes consistency in the TEQA comparative assessment process, counters selection bias and reduces the time demands associated with slide selection. It may also prove useful in identifying technical problems within laboratories during sample preparation prior to or during staining, including equipment or process faults. This technique is now well established locally as an enhancement of the current TEQA scheme for the assessment of slide staining. We feel that this enhancement could be incorporated as a new initiative in the current National TEQA scheme as a complement to the established selection process. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: There were no cytomorphological findings in FNAC to allow for a clear cut separation of LGFMS from other spindle cell or myxoid lesions, but high-grade sarcoma could be excluded. Surgical (incisional or excisional) biopsy or, alternatively, examination of RT-PCR for the FUS/CREB3L or FUS/CREB3L1 fusion transcripts may be necessary to obtain a correct diagnosis.

Conclusions: Endocervical glandular neoplasia detected on cytology is predictive of significant cervical pathology even when colposcopy is normal, which supports excisional biopsy in the primary assessment of these smears. The high concomitant squamous abnormality rate justifies the use of colposcopy to direct biopsies from the ectocervix. Cervical cytology is the only current screening method for cervical glandular abnormalities but sensitivity is poor. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: Urine cytology is an easy and rapid method of detecting decoy cells in cases where renal biopsy is not possible. However, the low incidence of detection of decoy cells in the present study, together with poor correlation with PCR results, questions its sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing BKV reactivation.

Conclusion: Preoperative FNAC diagnosis of grade 1 breast carcinoma has a high sensitivity, especially in ductal carcinomas. Invasive lobular and tubular carcinomas were less likely to receive a definite preoperative diagnosis. The main reason for not reaching a definitive malignant diagnosis was sampling error due to small tumours less than 1 cm in diameter, irrespective of tumour subtype.
Conclusion: The diagnosis of basaloid variant of SCC in a rectal location can be very difficult, both on account of the uncommon location and because of the low specificity of morphological aspects on EUS-FNA smears. The immunocytochemical technique, including a limited spectrum of keratins (CK7, CK20, CK34[beta]e12, and p63) is necessary to avoid this diagnostic pitfall. (Source: Cytopathology)

Conclusions: Special efforts to recognize endocervical glandular extension in high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and glandular neoplasia coexisting with squamous intraepithelial lesions from the heterogeneous category of AGC can contribute to increasing the diagnostic accuracy. The identification of endocervical glandular extension on cervical cytology would alert the gynaecologist to perform a thorough assessment of the endocervix during colposcopy. This could also help to decide on the need to perform deeper conization rather than loop electrosurgical excision procedure to ensure negative margins when colposcopic biopsy shows CIN 2 or 3.
