Lights out: A protein may switch off cancer cells

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—A protein acting as a switch to activate the cell death process may prove to be an effective targeted treatment for killing cancer cells.

University of Michigan researchers discovered that the protein called RIP plays a role in mediating both the life and death of squamous cell carcinoma cancer cells, said Yvonne Kapila, associate professor, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry.

This is key because cancer cells elude the normal cell death process. If that process could be activated artificially by a targeted introduction of RIP into cancer patients, those cells could be destroyed before they circulate out of control in the body, Kapila said.

The findings are promising but still a lon...

The National Library of Medicine has announced that free full-text articles from over 200 biomedical journals and over 65 select reference books will be made available for medical teams responding to the earthquake in Haiti and the libraries supporting their efforts.

The Emergency Access Initiative (EAI) collection includes common biomedical journal titles and reference books, and emergency medicine-related titles. EAI serves as a temporary collection replacement and/or supplement for libraries affected by disasters that need to continue to serve medical staff and affiliated users. It is also intended for healthcare personnel responding to a specific disaster.

Two members of the Health Sciences Libraries' staff spent Saturday morning (2/6/10) distributing reliable health information and giving out MedlinePlus pens, as well as flyers with resources for free/low cost health care, to about 90+ parents at the Give Kids a Smile annual event held at the UM School of Dentistry. While the participants were waiting for their dental check-ups, we also gave out colorful stickers to the children. Other volunteers in the waiting room were occupied with keeping the children entertained, while still others demonstrated (on Mr. Potato Head and various stuffed animals) the correct way to brush one's teeth. The event went very well thanks to the warmth and friendliness of the numerous volunteers (mostly pre-dental and dental students) and to the competence and th...

The University hosts one of the few museums in the world specifically dedicated to honoring the discipline of — believe it or not — dentistry.

The Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry is scattered throughout the School of Dentistry and the W.K. Kellogg Institute Building. Named after Dr. Gordon Sindecuse, a University alum, the museum was created in 1992 to preserve dental paraphernalia and recognize the fusion of art and dentistry. The museum contains over 12,000 objects, but only 15 percent of these artifacts are put on display due to lack of space. Most of the items are kept in drawers, portfolios and rolling ra...

An In-depth Look at the News

Google News has been one of the usual suspects when you want to monitor current news. The challenge of Google News is that the layout and organization of the stories is done by algorithm rather than by a real live human. This sometimes results in stories from less reliable sources being featured, at the expense of providing links to more trustworthy sources. Perhaps the more significant issue is that, in order to read any of the news, you need to click through to the story. Want another perspective? You'll have to go back to Google News, skim the headlines and decide what other sources offer better coverage.

Google has partnered with The Washington Post and The New York Times to provide a more journalistic approach to providing news. This new of...

In today's Record, there's a nice write-up about the School of Dentistry's digitized videos and YouTube channel:

The dental school’s videos are included on the university’s new YouTube Channel that was launched in September. The university’s portal includes videos focusing on special speakers and events, classroom lectures, and other highlights.

The School of Dentistry’s videos are the result of an effort that began several years ago to digitize more than 1,200 videotapes created in the school’s television studios in the 1970s.

Read the article and take a look at the School's YouTube channel. (Source: Dentistry Library)

This is one of the weirdest patents I've ever seen. Yes, it was 1891, but I still have trouble understanding how this patent was ever awarded. Near as I can figure out, Elizabeth Dean said she could imagine all kinds of things people might do with eucalyptus and they gave her a patent! Well, perhaps I exaggerate. Judge for yourself.

Since it is so short, it is actually reasonable to transcribe it. Take a look.

A New or Improved Manufacture of Eucalyptus Products for Various Useful Purposes

I, Elizabeth Dean, of Glenthorne, Worple Road, Epsom, in the County of Surrey, Widow, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement: —

http://www.nidcr.nih.gov/Research/ResearchResults/ScienceBriefs/CurrentSNIB/July/Xylitol.htm

In the July issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, researchers partially funded through NIDCR may have found the answer. It’s a soft capsule filled with 8 milliliters of strawberry-flavored xylitol syrup. Parents can pull it apart and squeeze the syrup directly into their child’s mouth. In a year-long randomized trial of 94 toddlers whose primary teeth were “coming in,” the researchers found that children who received two capsules a day could prevent up to 70 percent of decayed teeth. They found that the protection against decay was not increased with three capsules per day. The study was conducted in the Micro...

I've written before about Mendeley, the tool that combines citation management with social networking. It's got a really cool feature that's becoming more important as the number of articles in Mendeley increases (more than 1 million now). Mendeley provides article-level usage statistics in real time, to create a new kind of impact factor. You can see how often the article is downloaded, shared, and the average reading time.

Dental Patent: 1886 - Berlin Dentist Works through Claudius Ash to Patent Elevating Chair

This patent is interesting in that it shows some of the politics of international patent applications at the time. The actual creative individual in this patent is Daniel O'Connell, who sounds Irish but is living in Berlin. At this time, the Germans were the leaders of the dental profession, so if you were serious about dentistry that was a good place to study. To patent in the Britain (what we think of now as the United Kingdom), he worked through an agent. In this case the agent was the Ash firm. Given that the Ash firm marketed dental chairs, there may be an implication that this innovation was something they were interested in marketing or producing.

RefWorks now has a web browser bookmarklet that lets you capture web page data easily. RefGrab-It is installed in your browser, so that you can click on the icon while browsing the web to collect information. RefWorks identifies the title and the URL of web page you’re on, then, in a new window, gives you the option to import the record into your RefWorks account. If an ISBN number, PubMed ID or DOI exist on the web page, RefGrab-It will automatically search various web resources (behind the scenes) to get supplemental information that you can also import, including references and RSS feeds.
Here’s the RefGrab-It icon in my browser window.

Click on the RefGrab-It icon and another page appears.

Click Import to put the record in your library.

Here's another web page. There...

Important for everyone who uses RefWorks: with the new version of Write-n-Cite (W-N-C 3) you can no longer use this tool & the "One Line/Cite" method of entering citations & formatting bibliographies in the same document. Very bad things happen! So choose the tool you want to use & use it consistently.

"I, Alice Edith Emily Johnson, of the Terrace Downham Market, Norfolk, Spinster, do hereby declare the nature of this invention ... "

In the 1800s and early part of the 20th century the idea of a woman as an inventor was to many incongruous and perhaps even laughable. However, while patents awarded to women were not in the majority, there was a solid presence from "the gentler sex". This is but one example, with others to follow.

Because the patent application process required providing your profession, it is interesting to observe the labels people provided for themselves in this context. Here, Miss Alice identifies her profession as "Spinster," a label we would now try to avoid.

Of interest to our entire community, the American Dental Association has just released their new website on evidence-based dentistry.

ADA: EBD: http://ebd.ada.org/

The site includes a useful set of resources and tools, including: systematic reviews, clinical synopses of the evidence, recommendations from the ADA, resources and tools, as well as a community space.

The community space is not terribly well developed at this point, being a new service, but I am very excited that it was included and eagerly anticipate richer expansion of this section. I sent this and a few other thoughts and suggestions. I hope that you will also send your thoughts to the ADA to help develop this new and valuable community resource in directions of the greatest value to the profession.
Because the British patents were often applied for as part of establishing precendent for patent applications in other countries, you can find patents awarded to people from many locations, including patents awarded to prominent people from dentistry in the Americas. In this week's example you see a patent for a dental elevating chair awarded to a representative of SS White - Samuel Stockton White, publisher of Dental Cosmos.

We are beginning a new series which we hope you will enjoy. Some years ago the Dentistry Library had the opportunity to acquire a collection of historic dental patents covering the late 1800s through the early 1900s. The collection is intriguing for several reasons. Most important, the collection includes copies of patents award to such notables of dental history as Claudius Ash, Samuel S. White, and William Taggart.

The collection is of patents from the United Kingdom, but includes a great many American inventors. The reason for this is that it was more difficult to gain patents in the USA, so a common strategy was to first apply for a UK or European continental patent, and to use that patent to establish precedence in the American patent application process. Do you want to share papers with colleagues, without emailing them every time you find something of interest? Mendeley is for you!

A relatively new program, still in beta, Mendeley works with Macs, PCs, & the Linux operating system. It lets you manage your papers online, discover research trends, connect with other researchers in your field, and coming soon, learn about the readership of your own publications: how many readers you have, what disciplines they're in, & where they're from.

You can insert citations & create bibliographies in your Word documents using Mendeley, although it is a much less sophisticated system than EndNote, for example. But yo...

What sort of man is Garrett Scott of Ann Arbor? An eccentric antiquarian bookseller (is there any other sort?) who describes his place of work as "central Washtenaw county's most semi-pleasant conditions for the casual browser of uncommon 19th century material."

An exorbitant gourmand of social media and microblogging who shares such pungent observations as "John Evelyn notes that macerating a pine nut three days in a child's urine "is of wonderful Effect" in getting it to sprout."

Why do we care? Well, Garrett Scott of Ann Arbor has just begun a one year meditation on oral hygiene, specifically the flossing of teeth.

Please, join us in following his amusing and erudite exploration of flossing at:

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to shut down 44 free dental clinics used by poor children in order to save the city $2.5 million, The Daily News reports. Dentists say the clinics are used by some 17,000 kids.

And from the Daily News, a response from dentists.

In early July, the School of Dentistry had a farewell party for me as I shift to my new position as the Emerging Technologies Librarian, and as the Dentistry Library was closed to the public, permanently. The party was amazing. I was and remain deeply touched. Today we are having a welcoming event for the School of Dentistry at the Health Sciences Library, where the collections of the Dentistry Library were moved, and where the School of Dentistry community will now go for access to collections and for library services and support. I'd like to take just a moment to talk briefly about this sea change in our environment and how it has come about, from my own personal point of view.

In Fall 1997, at the Midwest Medical Library Association meeting, Nancy Allee and Doreen Bradley began trying ...

Last week the Chronicle of Higher Education mentioned Bernie Machen. Remember Bernie? He was the Dean here at the School of Dentistry shortly before I arrived in the late 90s. When I was interviewing for position of Dentistry Librarian, my primary cram-for-the-test study source was Dental Education at the Crossroads from the Institute of Medicine and the Committee On The Future Of Dental Education.

Dental Education at the Crossroads: http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=4925

The description of the book starts with this: "Six dental schools have closed in the last decade and others are in jeopardy. Facing this uncertainty about the status of dental education and the continued tension between educators and practitioners, leaders in the profession have recognized the need for purpos...

More good news: All dentistry books are now integrated by call number with the collection at Taubman, so you should have no trouble finding them on the 6th floor.

Journals are almost done as well--just a few more rows to go. (Source: Dentistry Library)

Great news! The integration of the Dentistry monographs with the Taubman collection continues apace. Almost all books are in their proper places on the shelves on the 6th floor. If the title you’re looking for has a call number beginning with RT through Z though, it will still be in the section behind the copiers.

We’ve made progress with integrating the Dentistry journals as well. With the exception of 2 sections, journals have been integrated with the Taubman collection on the 5th and 6th floors. Journals with titles beginning with B through D and P through Z are still on the far left shelves of the 5th floor.

As always, if you're having trouble finding something, please ask for help! (Source: Dentistry Library)

All books in the Dentistry collection are now back from scanning. They're being integrated into the Taubman collection over the next two months,so for a while, you'll have to check in two places for dental titles. Right now, most dental books are on the shelves on the 6th floor directly behind the photocopiers, so check there first. If you don't find what you're looking for, then check in the main part of the book stacks.

Remember, if you can't find something that should be on the shelves, please ask for help! (Source: Dentistry Library)

Great news! Google scanning is back on track, & the first books from the Dentistry collection have now arrived at the Taubman Medical Library. The reserve books for which we had only one copy are now available with the rest of the reserve collection (so all books on reserve can now be checked out).

The rest of the book collection, which should be on the shelves by the end of next week, will be located temporarily just behind the photocopiers on the on the 6th floor. When the Taubman books begin to return from scanning, both collections will be merged in call number order, also on the 6th floor.

Again, if you urgently need a book that's being scanned, please ask for it at the Circulation/Single Service Desk. (Source: Dentistry Library)

Here’s some more information on the move of the Dentistry collection to the Taubman Medical Library.

Reserves are available, except for a small number of items for which we had only one copy (these are being scanned and will be the first books back). Just ask for them by call number at the Circulation Desk.

For faculty, if you haven’t received an email regarding reserves for the fall term, please contact Jenny Wu at yhwu@umich.edu.

Books will be coming to Taubman in groups over the next month as they are scanned for the Google project. If you need a title urgently, please ask at the Circ Desk & we will recall it for you (we’ve already done this, so don’t hesitate to ask). (Source: Dentistry Library)

The Ann Arbor News has printed a story about the Virtual Reality in Health event at the Duderstadt Center last week. Dr Mark Fitzgerald - who gave an excellent overview of the School of Dentistry's use of simulations to train dental students - is quoted:

Last fall, U-M's Dentistry school began training students with simulations using technology similar to the computer animation software used for Pixar's movies, said Mark Fitzgerald.

It offers dental students the chance to work on memorizing sequences of teeth and to familiarize themselves with the task at hand before practicing on a mannequin or getting to work on a real patient, said the associate chair of the school's Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics department.

Trying out the 3-D disaster simulator last week, Fitzgera...

In terms of dates, the Dentistry Library is scheduled to close to the public on June 27. The library's print collection will be subsequently moved to the Taubman Medical Library in July. Some of the collection's duplicates will be withdrawn, but the collection as a whole will remain intact and accessible at Taubman.

In this study by Taiwanese researchers, 59 patients with hearing loss and digital hearing aids were divided into two groups based on age. The study showed that age played no role in the improvement of a patient’s ability to hear, with both groups exhibiting improved performance in the four months following the hearing aid fitting. The authors believe that based on this research, physicians should not view age as a limiting factor as to whether to fit older patients with hearing aids.

A third study focuses on pediatric care, looking into the cause and treatment of chronic ear infections where fluid is present behind the ear drum (otitis media with effusion). Results from this study, conducted by Australian researchers, indicate that the presence of intracellular bacteria in the middle ea...

"Found this website, when I was looking for tooth whitening dentists (albeit a cheap one). But my question is really do the tooth whitening thing works. Can get that hollywood smile."

This is a very common question these days, one that concerns a lot of folk. Now, since we're librarians and not dentists, I am going to talk mostly about how one could search for this topic of interest, just highlighting a few interesting tools and techniques.

Most folks would start with Google. The question is what would you search for? Whiter teeth? Hollywood smile? Teeth whiteners? Tooth whitening? One of the hardest parts of any question is the time spent finding the right lingo to get at the answer you really want. In this case, it turns out that the phrase us...

This name reflects some of the exciting transitions we will be undergoing over the next few months. I can't say it better than it was said by the Dean, so I have requested permission to share with our blog readers his message to the School community.

To the School of Dentistry Community:

The Dentistry Library is now expanding our outreach with an easy way to keep track of what is new in the field and at the library. You may have heard of Twitter, which is described as a microblogging tool. Basically, instead of the long articles you have seen here in our blog, in Twitter the entries are 140 characters -- or less!

We hope to have the Twitter entries display on our home page when it is revised (process to begin later this month). In the meantime, we will occasionally list our recent Twitter entries in a blog post, for you to explore as you wish. So, you can either check out our "Twitterstream" or just keep watching our blog. Sooner or later, the information will come to you.

Here is the link to our Twitter account:

Dr. Terry Preece in Utah has figured out what to do about all his patients and the Halloween candy they pick up. He buys it from them at a dollar a pound!

He isn't the only dentist doing this. Across the country, countless dentists are engaging in similar programs to encourage children to reduce the consumption of Halloween candies. Closer to home, Dr. Paul W. Allen from Saginaw and Dr. Kevin Flood from Grand Rapids are doing the same thing.

Today saw the inaugural event in the Health Sciences Libraries lecture series. The speaker was Dr. David Stutz, a.k.a. the Podcast Doctor. Several people wanted to attend who asked where they could find the podcast, however (ironically) there was no podcast. As a wholly inadequate fill-in for the lack, please find below live-blogging from the event (which was in a room that lacked wireless network access also).

A really bizarre case has appeared in the legal literature. In this case a dentist performed surgery on one of his assistants who was also a patient. The assistant had a hobby or outside interest of caring for pot-bellied pigs. The surgery included the placement of temporary implants. As a practical joke, while the assistant/patient was under anesthetic, the dentist placed temporary implants of boars teeth, took photos, and then removed the boars teeth and continued with placing the actual temporary implants.

As you might have guessed, when the assistant saw the photos, she did not find it at all funny, which was the beginning of the legal cases. The dentist expected that his insurance company would cover him when he was sued, however they declined. He settled out of court with the assist...

In 1740, Joannus Baptista Mongin wrote a short (7 page) work describing pregnancy as a risk factor for tooth loss. You may remember the old saying, "for every child, the mother loses a tooth"? Well, perhaps this is where it began. The original book is in the Rare Book collections of the Dentistry Library, but for those who would like to take a look at this without coming to the library, here are images of the original pages in Latin.

It is of interest on campus in part because it has become increasingly prominent in education and commerce. Following after our earlier bootcamp sessions on Second Life, we were asked to make a video to help illustrate science learning opportunities in Second Life. The video is now available!
The Dentistry Library is pleased to announce, in partnership with the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry, a new exhibit on the life and research of Willoughby Dayton Miller. These exhibits are mounted in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Dr. Miller's untimely death.

WD Miller was hired to be the second dean of our School of Dentistry, having been recruited by Neville Hoff. Dr. Miller died shortly after his arrival in this country, having met with the faculty to discuss hopes for the future of the school, but never having the opportunity to implement any of these plans. Why was Miller so aggressively recruited? Because at that time, he was the very best known scientist in all of dentistry, having discovered the relationship between oral microflora and caries.

Miller's research was large...

We are about to take down our exhibit, "Women and Children First". The topic of the exhibit was to look at how the insights of mothers and teachers about the oral health concerns of children shaped the focus and importance of dentistry as it evolved in the United States. Don't worry -- you haven't missed it, though! If you want to see parts of the exhibit, you can visit the Flickr photo collection to explore the photos and descriptions.

For those who enjoyed our podcast on science blogs, here is a newly discovered resource to help make it easier to follow the science blogosphere -- PostGenomic.

PostGenomic is an aggregator -- a source that compiles or aggregates information from a variety of sources. In this case, PostGenomic collects information from a variety of science blogs, and repackages in a way to make them more useful. It has several very nice features, including (my favorite) the option to track your favorite blog postings and see who is talking about them. It collects science blogs across domains, so is broad in scope, but I have yet to visit their main page without finding something of interest. A marvelous resource!

Are you a fan of RSS Feeds? Have you found a number of favorites you are tracking? Ah, but now you want your students to review a select set as part of their regular class readings.

There is an easy way to share selected RSS feeds with others. Pageflakes is a service that allows you to collect functional tools (flakes) and RSS feeds into a single web page. Here is an example that collects example RSS feeds in medicine and dentistry.

Pageflakes: Med/Dent RSS Demo: http://www.pageflakes.com/pfa/11118181

Notice you'll see organizations, journal table of contents, blogs, image streams, videos, and more.

Here is a screeshot that shows this entire collection, to give a better sense of the range of information included.

The UM Health Sciences Libraries must cancel subscriptions to resources including journals and databases, due to inflationary increases and budget reductions. This is the first year we will include dental journals on our list of proposed cancellations, so please review carefully. Your input is an extremely valuable factor in our decision-making process, and we are committed to supporting the clinical, educational and research information needs of the campus.

Please review the proposed cancellation list at http://www.lib.umich.edu/hsl/jcanc07/ and share your comments with us using the web form on this page or email hsl.collections@umich.edu by June 12, 2007. (Source: Dentistry Library)

Thanks to Deena (SoD) for mentioning WOWIO, a source of free e-books on a variety of topics. WOWIO offers many books as PDFs, which work on a variety of devices from computers to PDAs. Many of the books included in WOWIO come from major publishers, with Oxford University Press as one major contributor. WOWIO makes copyrighted books available for download with registration, but free of charge, both through partnerships and as a publisher in their own right.

One title they are currently highlighting is from Eric Drexler, who might be familiar as the co-author (with Marvin Minsky) of Engines of Creation, in addition to Nanosystems and Unbounding the Future: The Nanotechnology Revolution. WOWIO has published a 20th anniversary edition of Engines of Creation with new material included.

MI-Info is an NIH grant funded project to bring core information and informatics skills to the public health workforce in Michigan through skills building tutorials and highlighted resources. Major tutorial topics include:

* Evidence Based Public Health
* Finding Health Statistics Online
* Searching the Internet
* Searching the Public Health Literature
* Staying Informed
* Health Education Resources

While the primary focus is on the public health workforce, these clear and easy-to-follow tutorials cover information skills much need by all health care workers and highlight both free resources as well as those limited to residents of the state Michigan. Highly recommended.

What about those children with special needs who for one reason or another can't go to regular summer camps? Or what about the ever present question of, "How do I find more people like me?" at the childs level? As dentists, you may have patients who ask you for help with this type of question. Here is a great resource that collects information on summer camps for special needs children, and they even have a section specifically for children with craniofacial concerns.

Sometimes you don't need or want a big Web search for your question -- all you want are a few statistics or a quick definition. At those times, you might be better off not using Yahoo or Google or any of the other big search engines. Instead go right to one of the many quick reference tools available online.

You've probably all heard of Wikipedia already, so I won't talk much about that. Answers.com partners with Wikipedia, Thesaurus.com, and several other online reference tools to combine these various resources in one place. Do a search at Answers.com, and find encyclopedia articles, dictionary definitions, translations, thesaurus terms, and more. Another quick option is FactBites. Personally, I enjoy FactBites when I want a collection of stats and definitions without a lot of digging. ...

Q:

I just browsed the mblog entry for the dental faculty publication list, but my recent publications are not listed. One is not even on the PubMed yet! What should I do?

A:

First off, let me describe how these lists are generated.

The Library has automatic searches that run everytime the OVID Medline database is updated. We have two searches, because we found that there was no methodology for one search that was truly inclusive of all our faculty. Both search strategies retrieve very different lists of articles.

The first search looks through all the dental literature published, and limits it to that with primary author addresses in Ann Arbor Michigan. Those are skimmed by the librarian to ensure that the address or names are for people in the School of Dentistry. Since many of our ...

While I was at the IADR meeting last month, I found myself having a number of conversations about the Google Books Project and the potential impact on the profession of dentistry.

Basically, here's the idea.

Based on the holdings in this library, I would estimate that approximately 4/5s of the professonal literature in dentistry is in journals. More and more of the journals are electronic, which is just dandy for those who have access to the Internet. Right? Well, yes, as long as what you want is in those electronic journals.

What sort of dental information is not in the journals? The basics and the cutting edge. What do I mean by basics? Standard clinical practice that has been being done the same way for so long that no one writes new articles about it. Research standards and method...

This year, let's look at some resources about dental exams and autistic patients. These articles describe both the practical aspects of providing care to children with autism spectrum disorders as well as describing what the experience feels like to the patient and why it is troubling for them.

ABSTRACT:
Resin-based restorative materials are considered safe for the vast majority of dental patients. Although constituent chemicals such as monomers, accelerators and initiators can potentially leach out of cured resin-based materials after placement, adverse reactions to these chemicals are rare and reaction symptoms commonly subside after removal of the materials. Dentists should be aware of the rare possibility that patients could have adverse reactions to constituents of resin-based materials and be vigilant in observing any adv...

A common question among oral health practitioners is what knowledge is reasonable to expect of family medicine, pediatric, and geriatric health care practitioners. For that reason, it is interesting every now and then to look at what is being published in the non-dental clinical literature, such as these articles from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Women and Children First: The Origins of Hygiene and Preventive Care in Dentistry.

Did you know that the first known mention of preventive care in oral health was from St. Hildegarde von Bingen in the 11th Century in Germany?
Did you know that the first organized outreach of dental hygiene education was directer to schoolchildren during World War I? And that the dentists and hygienists in those schools saw patients in the hallways and on stairway landings?
Early instruction in preventive care was often in the form of nursery rhymes?

Preventive care in dentistry was inspired in large part by the needs of children and through the determination and inspiration of women...

The Dentistry Library just received a copy of the 1856 text by J. C. Clendon on dental surgery.

This is an essay describing the reason for basic science education as a foundation for oral surgery and treatment decisions, based on the state of the knowledge at the time. Dr. Clendon was a a physician with membership in the Royal College of Surgeons, specializing in dental and oral surgery.

Since this was a short work, before shelving it in our Rare Book Room, I took a few pictures of the pages for those who are interested in further information about this work.

In today's headlines, articles are focusing on how financial problems in Medicaid led to a child's death.

ABC News: Toothache leads to boy's death, Tragedy underscores the need for better dental services among U.S. children (by Laura Owings): http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=2925584&page=1

"A simple toothache can be fatal. That is the sobering message a 12-year-old Maryland boy left when, after his dental problems went untreated, he succumbed to a severe brain infection."

The news is relating the death to problems in Medicaid that make it difficult for both the parent and dentist to provide care.

"In fact, experts say the low rates Medicaid offers to cover dental services are less than what it costs the doctor to do the actual treatment." (Source: Dentistry Library)

New research published last month in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology is hopeful for developing a test to diagnose severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) in children.

Y. Li, Y. Ge, D. Saxena, P.W. Caufield. 2006. Genetic profiling of the oral microbiota associated with severe early-childhood carries. Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 45. 1: 81-87. PMID: 17079495
http://jcm.asm.org/cgi/content/full/45/1/81?view=long&pmid=17079495

"After adjusting for the number of observed bands, we estimated that the S-ECC group exhibited 94.5 total phylotypes and that the CF group exhibited 113.4. These results suggest that the microbial diversity and complexity of the microbial biota in dental plaque are significantly less in S-ECC children than in CF children." (Source: Dentistry Library)

"Pfizer's announcement last week that it will cut its research marks a watershed for the pharmaceutical industry (see page 466). Until now Pfizer, the leading drug company in terms of both sales and research spending, and an important industry bellwether, has refrained from cutting its efforts to discover new drugs. Yet its $7 billion in annual R&D expenditures has failed to generate anything near the number of discoveries needed to cover those costs." (Source: Dentistry Library)

In Google Images, you do a search just like for web pages, by typing in keywords that describe what you want. Google finds images that have that word near the image. Sometimes the image is right on target, sometimes it is really strange. In Google Image searches there is also the question of licensing, how to find out who owns the image, is it copyrighted, and can you get permission to use it. Answering those questions can take a lot of work.

In Flickr, you can search, just like in Google, but that isn't the best featu...

Glucosamine is a popular over the counter treatment to allieve joint pain in arthritis. Glucosamine has also been receiving increasing attention in the research literature as a potential cause of diabetes. It is also linked to atherosclerosis. Glucosamine has been proposed as an ingredient in a 'vitamin cocktail' for treating Ehlers-Dahlos patients. Might it be possible that this could be another factor connecting this cluster of systemic diseases often associated with periodontitis?

Here is a recent article from UM researchers on this topic, stating that for now it is considered safe for diabetics to use glucosamine.

If you are headed to Chicago anytime soon, you might want to check out the International Museum of Surgical Sciences. They have some really amazing exhibits. This week saw the conclusion of Catherine Jacobi's exhibit, “Her Tongue: corporal and textual examinations.” Ongoing is a lecture series on pain.

Understanding Pain: http://www.imss.org/lectureSeries.htm

"This medical humanities lecture series will examine the human experience of pain from clinical, historical, and social perspectives. Lectures will be presented by health and medical professionals, and scholars who focus on pain management."

Other recent exhibits include Milestones in Medical Imaging: 21st Century Medicine, Nursing: Care for a Changing World, and many others. (Source: Dentistry Library)

There are many different ways in which food and cooking is important to dentists and their patients. A patient might have TMJ, problems either chewing or swallowing, sensitive teeth, be wearing braces, avoiding sugar, or have other concerns. There are even recipes for how to make your own toothpaste or mouthwash! Often recipes of interest to patients in one of these groups might be helpful for other patients as well.

The Dentistry Library has a number of cookbooks available for patients in the Consumer Health section of our Reference collection. You can find these books listed in MIRLYN by searching "Cookery" as a subject heading, or the textwords "Recipes" or "Cookbook", and then refine the search to just the Dentistry Library.

In addition to our books, here are a few websites of inter...

Excerpt to appreciate:
“A dental student is one of the more stressed-out lifestyles,” Johnson said. “You’ve got tests, classes, exams. When we get together and turn up the amps, it’s the ultimate release.”

NOTE to the world -- I want a band t-shirt! Really, and will pay the list price plus USPS shipping. (Source: Dentistry Library)

I just discovered this marvelous free online book documenting just a few of the challenges and achievements of early efforts to promote diversity in the US Dental Corps. Along with this, please also note recent news articles highlighting the achievements of specific African American dentists in their local communities.

RDH, a well known journal for dental hygienists, recently published an article called "The Feud between dentists and periodontists". Just the sort of title to attract media attention, and as you might guess, it has done so.

The article is a response to the recent AAP guidelines for appropriate referral of dental patients from general dentists to periodontists. An overview of the guidelines is included in the article, as well as discussion of opinions on the guidelines and how they may differ from common practices.
