The freely available PubMed API (application programming interface) makes it possible for programmers from outside of the National Library of Medicine to develop alternatives to PubMed.gov for searching NLM’s vast database of biomedical journal literature citations. In this guest post, super searcher Kristine Ogden describes two third-party PubMed tools, HubMed and Quertle, and explains how they can be useful for specialized searching.

But recently, I’ve been keeping my eye on two third-party websites that offer the ability to search ...

Here at NN/LM PNR, we’re experimenting with social media as one of several ways we communicate with Network members and work to spread the word about health information resources, programs, and services. We invite you to follow us on Twitter, be our fan on Facebook, and let us know what kinds of information you would like to see in those places.
If you are new to social media or just new to thinking about it in a professional context, take a look at our self-paced online Social Networking tutorial.
As many know, Linda Milgrom, the RML’s Outreach Coordinator will be retiring on March 1, 2010.
To celebrate her long-lived and wonderful career, we gave her a party. Guests included former RML and HSLers, as well as her family (even from faraway Washington DC!). It was a festive occasion, complete with a kazoo serenade to send her off in Italian style (think: That’s Amore!). Check out photos from the party on flickr.

Reflecting on my years with Linda, as I think about her role in the RML, I think of:
A Very Friendly, Open, and Generous *People* Person. Linda instantly finds ways to connect with whomever she meets… when she’s exhibiting, attending conferences, answering questions over the phone, making connections at the UW, and throughout the region. Through these conn...

The following is a message from the National Library of Medicine regarding MedlinePlus Go Local. This news was announced on a Go Local conference call earlier today. There is a link to the Power Point slides that were presented on the call at the end of this message. The slides illustrate the evaluation efforts of NLM to reach their decision.

The goal of Go Local was to connect users to health services in their local communities. This seemed like a natural extension to MedlinePlus, which provides health information. In 2001, Go Local was a unique service.

For people with disabilities, surfing the web can be a very frustrating experience. Many websites are developed without the special needs of people with visual impairments, hearing loss, and/or mobility challenges in mind. Here are a few simple steps you can take today that will improve the accessibility of your organization’s webpages.

Use an accessibility checker
A good first step to making your webpages more accessible is to run them through one or more online accessibility checkers. Enter a URL and you will get back a report suggesting areas for improvement. Here are three freely available accessibility checkers:

This is the True Story of what happened when we received an NN/LM PNR Technology Improvement Award.

It was love at first sight when I met my first portable library system at the 2008 Regional Academic Health Sciences Libraries (RAHSL) meeting at Oregon Health & Science University. Todd Hannon, OHSU reference librarian, handled the introductions to the system, which included a laptop, a tiny but high-resolution LCD projector, a table-top projection screen, and other portable paraphernalia.

I am re-posting it here in order to highlight the great resources Hope suggests for learning more about the e-patient movement. Thanks Hope!

—
I have been to several conferences recently: Medicine 2.0, Health 2.0, the Connected Health Symposium and e-Patient Connections Conference 2009. At each of those I was privileged to hear e-Patient Dave speak. He is a remarkably incisive thinker on these issues and his keynote at the recent Medicine 2.0 conference (provocatively entitled, “Gimme My Damn Data!”) made a deep and positive impression on the attendees.

A recent report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 61% of American adults are e-patients, meaning they look online for health information. In a presentation for the Medical Library Association Tri-Chapter Conference earlier this month, Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Internet Project, reported on what survey data indicated about questions like these:

What kind of health information do e-patients seek?
How many e-patients use mobile devices as opposed to more stationary computers?
How many use social media to connect with healthcare providers or other patients?
How many e-patients are also e-participators, meaning they create, tag, and share health content online?
How satisfied are e-patients with the information they find online?

A screencast is a recording of actions performed on a computer screen. Screencasts are used to demonstrate computer-based tasks, such as website navigation, and are especially useful for distance education. Screencasts include audio and video, or sometimes just video with captions. Camtasia Studio, Adobe Captivate, and similar software can be used to create high quality, professional looking screencast tutorials, but not without significant investments in time and money.
Until recently, it would have been unreasonable to think about creating a screencast to address just one person’s specific information need. However, thanks to a number of free web-based tools that have come on the scene in the past few years, producing a screencast no longer needs to be a major production. In just m...

October is an important month! Medical Librarians Month is during October, and National Physician Assistant Week is October 6-12. Librarians and Physician Assistants (PAs) are natural partners to address patient education and health information literacy.
Health information literacy is an important component of patient care. Included as an objective in the Healthy People 2010 report, “Understanding and Improving Health”, it has been shown to be a strong influence in health outcomes. As health care becomes more expensive, poor health information literacy can increase heath care costs even further as people with low health information literacy are more at risk.
Physician Assistants, licensed to practice medicine in partnership with a physician, are also patient educators and often...

Congratulations to Dr. John Clarke, winner of the 2009 Flu Prevention PSA Contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Here is his winning entry:

In July of this year, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius invited all Americans to create videos about preventing the spread of seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus. Contestants were to post their entries on the video sharing site YouTube. The contest generated more than 200 entries. A panel of public health and communications experts selected ten finalists, and winner was decided by public vote. More than 50,000 votes were cast.
Why would an organization like HHS, with a critical message to communicate, choose to hold a YouTube contest? I can think of several reasons:

It engaged the community. The production teams for tho...

Formal scholarly communication is not traditionally a speedy process. The course from research to publication can take months or years. There are occasions, however, when an emergency situation compels publishers to pick up the pace so that researchers and decision-makers can communicate more rapidly. The H1N1 flu outbreak this year has been one of those situations. A number of publishers including the Public Library of Science (PLoS), EBSCO, and the Cochrane Collaboration have accelerated the pace of reviewing influenza information and made selected resources publicly available.

Are you on Facebook? Facebook is an extremely popular social networking site with more than 200,000 active users. More than 100,000 of those users log in at least once every day. It may have been invented in a Harvard dorm room, but Facebook is definitely not just for college students anymore. The fastest growing age demographics on Facebook are 35-55 and 55+. Using Facebook can be a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, share photos and links, and yes, even get to know your professional contacts a little better.

If you are new to Facebook, watch these video tutorials from the Facebook for Grownups series. A few details of the Facebook interface have changed since these videos were produced, but they still serve as nice introductions on how to set up a profile, find friend...

Wolfram|Alpha is a new search engine. Scratch that — it’s a “computational knowledge engine,” and also “the first step in an ambitious, long-term project to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable by anyone.” W|A has generated a lot of buzz since it launched on May 15.

W|A is different from Google and other search engines in that it calculates results based on its own library of data, gleaned from public sources. It can do calculus, tell you the phase of the moon on the day you were born, compare state sales tax rates, explain how you are related to your third cousin’s great grandson, and perform many other nifty tricks.
Take a look at the Wolfram|Alpha search examples related to Health & Medicine. As health information profession...

Greetings from Nikki Dettmar, the solo RML librarian in the Seattle office now, with an update from Alison Aldrich who is one of the official bloggers at MLA 2009 in Hawaii.
Her coverage of the NLM Sunrise Seminar on May 18th includes the following highlights:

PubMed’s Single Citation Matcher is not going away and will remain on the sidebar
In late summer, we will see some ’stylish’ new designs in PubMed that won’t affect functionality
Multimedia functionality will be prominently displayed in MedlinePlus

Get the full scoop at Alison’s Official MLA ‘09 Blog post!

First, a bit of library jargon: a pathfinder is an organized list of starting places (links or print resources) for research into a particular field or topic. In 2003, The Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce created an excellent pathfinder at phpartners.org. Since then, it has grown into an incredibly comprehensive and valuable resource. Do you need to find a report, article, or statistic related to public health? Are you looking for information about health policy or legislation? What about continuing education opportunities, funding sources, networking options, or employment? Odds are good that the perfect starting place for your search is listed at PHPartners … somewhere. There are 128 links on the Health Data Tools and Statistics page, 97 links on the H...

There are some simple things you can do to protect yourself:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance to protect others.
Stay at home when you are sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing - then throw it away.
Wash your hands often to prevent the spread of germs.

Here’s new feature in MedlinePlus, the Search Cloud.

The search cloud displays the top 100 search terms typed into the MedlinePlus search box. The search cloud is usually updated every week day. The terms appear in alphabetical order, and their size represents their relative frequency. The bigger the term, the more often it is searched by people who visit MedlinePlus. A term’s exact ranking is found by placing your cursor over the term. Click on any term in the search cloud to conduct a search for that term in MedlinePlus. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/cloud.html (Source: Dragonfly)

There’s just something about video. It is more compelling than text, more personal than still images… or is it? Can you believe that more than ten hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute? More than 100 million U.S. viewers watched YouTube videos last January. At least 126 U.S. hospitals are using YouTube for marketing and patient education. Still, it can be challenging for the average searcher to find health information, not to mention reliable health information, amongst the millions of videos on YouTube.

Over the past few weeks, our region - specifically Montana and Alaska - have experienced a series of emergency incidents. I was traveling in Eastern Montana the week of March 2-6 when my companions and I heard of the terrible natural gas explosion in downtown Bozeman. In rural states like Montana it seems that everybody knows everybody, so the impact of this type of event is felt even on the opposite side of the state. Within 24 hours there was another blast and fire in Whitehall, MT. As if that wasn’t enough, there was the fatal plane crash that occurred in Butte on Sunday, March 22nd. The very next day, a devastating fire lit up downtown Miles City.
While none of our NN/LM Network members were directly impacted by these events, the communities in which they live and work have been ...

Forty nursing students, some on-campus, some off. Forty required reference consultations. Two part-time librarians. Forty-two different schedules. One creative solution! Keep reading to learn how DimDim helps to facilitate communication between students and librarians at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library.

Librarians Joanne Rich and Janet Schnall are liaisons to the UW School of Nursing. Joanne and Janet approached the nursing faculty about ways they could get more involved in helping students improve their information literacy skills. The faculty responded in a BIG way: by requiring students in several classes to meet one-on-one with Janet or Joanne for individualized search help. Finding it difficult to schedule so many in-person meetings, Joanne and Janet asked Ann Wh...

For every successful blog, wiki, or social networking attempt, there are many abandoned projects. During the ACRL Virtual Conference last weekend, Meredith Farkas shared some great points about why Web 2.0 projects in libraries fail and what can be learned from those failures.

Use of social software is not seen as furthering the library’s mission and is not part of strategic planning.
Technology is a means to and end, not an end in itself. Successful technology projects are closely tied to the organization’s service priorities. Do not jump into a Web 2.0 project just because “all the other libraries are doing it.” Experiment first (see #3), look for successful examples, then make informed decisions about where Web 2.0 tools are likely to work best within the contex...

With the support and expertise of the ALA OITP Copyright Advisory Subcommittee, Michael Brewer, University of Arizona Library, has developed two new tools that are now available online.
The first “108 Spinner” is specifically targeted to assist librarians with questions about when section 108 of the copyright code (the library and archives provision) applies. In general, this section allows for libraries or archives (under specific circumstances) to:

     Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
     Seattle, WA (WAUFHC)

     Providence Portland Medical Center
     Portland, OR (ORUPRO)

     Washington State University
     Spokane, WA (WAUSPC)

EFTS virtually eliminates the need to create invoices and write checks for re-imbursement for interlibrary loans and document delivery between participants. Among the advantages are monthly detailed transaction based reports, the ability to handle variable charges and the ability to handle non-DOCLINE transactions.

A blog carnival is periodic roundup of quality blog posts from a particular field of interest. Bloggers take turns hosting the carnival. I am happy to announce that on March 10, the Medlib’s Round blog carnival– a roundup of the month’s best posts from the field of medical librarianship– will be hosted here at Dragonfly. Keep reading to learn more and to find out how you can participate.

Medlib’s Round is the brainchild of Laika Spoetnik, a medical librarian and blogger in the Netherlands. Here’s how it works:

Laika, the organizer, has established the carnival at http://blogcarnival.com/ and is maintaining schedule for where and when the carnival will be hosted.

On February 18th, Dan Wilson (Coordinator of the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness Plan) gave an RML Rendezvous update about service continuity planning. You can listen to a recording of this Rendezvous at https://webmeeting.nih.gov/p85862149 About 11 minutes and 10 seconds into the recording (you can skip to sections of the recording by dragging the vertical line in the timeline box at the bottom left of the screen) Dan introduced new scenario filters as a way to discuss library core values and services.
The following two screenshots of flood and power/Internet outage scenario filters from the presentation help to put service continuity planning in a clear, easy-to-understand visual exercise format that staff enjoy doing to identify priorities for their library.

According to a recent report, 54% of U.S. physicians own a PDA or a smartphone, and more than half of them consider the device to be an integral part of their practice. An estimated 70% of U.S. physicians will be using smartphones by 2011. How familiar are you with applications designed to deliver quality health information to mobile devices?
Medical Applications on Mobile Devices is a newly recorded presentation by Shikun “KK” Jiang, Technology Coordinator for NN/LM’s South Central Region. In this presentation, KK reviews several free and fee-based applications for health professionals, and a few applications for consumers as well. Here is an outline (times are approximate):

Earlier this month, U.S. Representative John Conyers (D-MI) re-introduced H.R. 801, the “Fair Copyright in Research Works Act.” If passed into law, H.R. 801 would reverse the NIH Public Access Policy, which ensures public online access to taxpayer-funded, peer reviewed health research literature, and prevent other federal agencies from implementing similar policies.

Pat Devine and I attended the 26th annual Online Northwest conference in Corvallis, Oregon last Friday. This unique conference brings together technology-curious information professionals from academic, public, school, and special libraries, as well as a few attendees from outside of libraryland. We are fortunate to have an event like this in our region.
B.J. Fogg delivered the keynote address. Fogg is the director of the Persuasive Technology Lab at Stanford University. He spoke to us about using online video to influence behavior. The web is a platform for persuasion, and every web site has some sort of persuasive goal. Mega-motivation alone cannot change behavior. Behavior change requires motivation, ability and a trigger. All three must be present at the same time for change to occur. ...

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) makes it possible to pick up dynamic content on the web and move it to a place that makes sense for you. In a previous post, I described how to use an RSS feed reader to track updates to blogs and websites. Feed readers are just one way to use RSS feeds. RSS can also help with such “retro” tasks as assembling print newsletters, setting up e-mail alerts, and making phone calls. Intrigued? Read on.

RSS to PDF
Tabbloid and FeedJournal are two free services that generate printable PDF newsletters from RSS feeds or lists of feeds. You might use an RSS to PDF service to create a print alternative for your organization’s blog, or to produce highly individualized newspapers for the physicians, researchers, and others who frequent your library.
