The National Library of Medicine’s software development challenge Show off Your Apps: Innovative Uses of NLM Information solicited applications that used the library’s data to develop innovative ways for people to obtain and share scientific and medical information. Entrants could create a new app, or submit an existing one.
An independent panel of judges chose five winners and five honorable mentions of software applications that help people learn about anatomy, help researchers find gene information in research literature, and help people sift through large amounts of scientific and medical information.
For more than 40 years, the library has been making the data it compiles for its electronic resources available for use in systems produced by others. Academic institutions, gover...

Medical Librarians: Your Ultimate Search Engine.
Definition: A search engine is a web site that collects and organizes content from all over the internet. Those wishing to locate something would enter a query about what they’d like to find and the engine provides links to content that matches what they want. http://realestate.about.com/od/sv/g/defsearcheng.htm. In other words, we as medical librarians locate, collect, and organize in order to provide needed information for our patrons.
Our next submission in our library advocacy series for our contest to recognize National Medical Librarians Month comes from an anonymous hospital librarian. Remember, entries are due by October 31.
I am surprised.
Many of us know the worth of medical librarians. We know we provide valuable services for our patrons and our facilities. We also know how we can help others who don’t yet know about our services.
Some of us are not afraid to speak up to promote our services. And some of us are. That’s not the profession; that’s our individual personality or our own distinctive style.
I am surprised at the number of colleagues who told me that perhaps their supervisor or direct report doesn’t know it is Medical Librarians Month! As someone who is initially very shy, I lea...

Massage Therapy as a form of medicine has a very long history, and can be found in practically every culture. Despite that long history, a concerted effort to ...

This post is to say goodbye and thanks for your friendship and support during my 3+ years with NN/LM PNR. This is my last week in the office. I have accepted a position as Clinical Informationist at The Ohio State University, Prior Health Sciences Library, and will begin work there in mid-October. I look forward to exciting new professional challenges and being closer to family.
It’s been quite an adventure! Three months after starting here, I found myself on a cattle ranch outside of Butte, Montana with Laurel Egan and Gail Kouame. They don’t prepare you for that in library school. Big Sky Country is an amazing place where, as I learned, deer and antelope actually do play. It is also home to champion tennis ball-chasing dogs:

and to some of the best health sciences librarians...

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is pleased to announce the launch of its new website, HealthIT.gov . This website is designed to become the leading national resource on health information technology (health IT) for both consumers and health care professionals.
Health is personal. It’s personal for the parent who has a child with asthma. It’s personal for the patient with a new cancer diagnosis. And it’s personal for the doctor who is responsible for caring for them. LibGuides are web-based, customizable templates that many libraries are using to serve as subject guides and portals to their resources and services. Chris Childs, Education & Outreach Librarian at Hardin Library at University of Iowa, has found a way to use LibGuides to go beyond the library in working with community organizations. Hear about Chris’ projects and see if there are ways you can use LibGuides beyond the traditional audiences!
Please join us on Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 at 1pm Pacific time (12 Alaska, 2pm Mountain) during our free monthly webcast featuring Chris Childs at http://webmeeting.nih.gov/rendezvous.
In late June, we announced our newest funding opportunities, including an Express Outreach RFP. Today’s update: The RFP and application form for Express Outreach awards have an important revision!
Here’s information about what’s different in the revised Express Outreach RFP, and our request to please use the revised application form when submitting your proposal.
What’s new in the revised Express Outreach RFP?
Express Outreach projects funded in 2011 must now be completed by September 30, 2012 (not February, 2013).
How is this different from the RFP announced in June?
Projects you propose for this round will now have 12 months (not 18 months) of funded support.
Is the funding level still $15,000 for this award?
Yes, we can still fund four successful Express Out...

The tools in CHEMM provide a comprehensive resource to help responders make safer decisions and provide them with the right information when it is needed most.
CHEMM enables first responders and other healthcare providers and planners to plan for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of mass-casualty incidents involving accidental or terrorist chemical releases.

The Health Data Initiative Forum, known informally as the Health Datapalooza, is a showcase for innovative technology projects that use data in new ways to support public health, wellness and/or patient care. This year’s event, which took place on June 9 at the National Institutes of Health, was co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the Institute of Medicine. Here are just a few of the more than 45 projects featured at this year’s Forum.

On March 29-30 of this year, I had the opportunity to attend the 2011 Disaster Information Outreach Symposium in Bethesda, Maryland. Speakers and participants from all levels of government, non-profit, libraries and business gathered to discuss expectations, strategies, and services librarians and libraries could offer in times of emergency. Questions of how to engage key players, deliver the right kind of services, and identify real needs vs. perceived needs ruled the day.
What I found particularly interesting was the emphasis that all responders placed on communication management; an area that librarians are primed to assist with. Communication breakdown (or slow turnaround on information dissemination) is one of the to...

Please join us on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 1pm Pacific time (12 Alaska, 2pm Mountain) as Susan Barnes, Assistant Director of the Outreach Evaluation Resource Center (OERC) presents Increasing Survey Response Rate for our free monthly webcast at http://webmeeting.nih.gov/rendezvous If you are unable to join us then, we invite you to view a recording of the webcast at the Rendezvous website later.
What does “response rate” mean, and why is it important? What is an “adequate” response rate? In this session, we will discuss these questions. Experts tell us that it’s important to treat questionnaires as social interactions—evidence shows that the Golden Rule even applies to successful survey research! We’ll go over practical steps you can

The National Association of Free Clinics sponsors C.A.R.E. Clinic events throughout the United States. C.A.R.E. Clinics provide opportunities for the uninsured to receive free basic medical care and preventive health services. The Washington C.A.R.E. Clinic took place on April 30, 2011 in the Tacoma Dome. Four medical librarians from the Pacific Northwest Region were on hand to direct patients to reliable sources of online health information. We would like to thank Angela Lee, Ann Gleason and Joanne Rich (University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries, Seattle) as well as Betsy Bartholomew (Multicare Health Systems, Tacoma) for volunteering their time and expertise to support this event.

From a press release:
Each year, there are numerous research proposals for promising new treatments that make their way through a peer-review process but do not receive funding, although they have the potential to make significant contribution to scientific discovery. The National Health Council (NHC), with input from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has developed a web database designed to bring researchers together with patient advocacy organizations and other funding sources. It’s called HealthResearchFunding.Org.
How it works: Researchers whose proposals have been peer reviewed by either the NIH or by an NHC member patient advocacy organization will be invited to register with HealthResearchFunding.Org and add an abstract. They will have the ability to also search for NHC mem...

Hello to all DOCLINE users. For a good summary of the DOCLINE Update given by NLM’s Maria Collins at the recent Medical Library Association annual meeting in Minneapolis, see the MLA blog posting by Katie Zybeck.
Please note that as of May 1, 2011, the national maximum charge of $11.00 per article has been lifted. If resource libraries need to raise fees to recover costs that is now possible. DOCLINE is still a reciprocal system emphazing low cost resource sharing whenever possible. If you have any questions about your routing tables or anything else regarding DOCLINE, please contact Patricia Devine at devine@u.washington.edu, or 206-543-8275.
Happy resource sharing! (Source: Dragonfly)

New from NLM: PubMed Mobile

This post describes three mobile sites and three apps for searching PubMed on smartphones and other mobile devices.

Last week, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine launched PubMed Mobile Beta, a mobile-friendly, simplified Web interface to the basic functions of PubMed. Search results can be limited to Free Full Text or Review articles. Tapping the title of an article opens a screen with that article’s abstract, PMID number, a free full text link if one is available, and a list of links to related citations. PubMed Mobile Beta does not work with LinkOut. However, if your library uses a proxy server, users accessing PubMed Mobile with your proxied URL should have access to subscription e-journal con...

Discussion questions included:

What are you doing to address the objectives in the Health Communication and Health Information Technology section of Healthy People 2020? What could organizations and individuals start doing right now?
What other objectives in Healthy People 2020 should we focus on to improve health literacy? What opportunities are there beyond the plan?
Healthy People 2020 offers flexibility to add new measurements of health literacy. Looking at the objectives under the Health Communication and Health IT section, how should we define success in improving health literacy?

An archive of that conversation is here. We hope to see you on twitter tomorrow!

Preserving health sciences materials is an important part of the National Library of Medicine‘s (NLM) mission. In addition to its own large collections, the NLM has created a directory of historical materials to highlight unique collections at other institutions and to provide contact information to researchers wishing to access them. The NLM has asked its Regional Medical Libraries to identify collections in each region that should be included in the Directory of History of Medicine Collections. The collections described in this Directory database provide research and reference services to scholars interested in the history...

It’s been a busy fall at the National Library of Medicine. NLM and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) have implemented or are working on several enhancements to PubMed and related databases. Some of the highlights are listed below. Details about any of these enhancements can be found in the NLM Technical Bulletin.

Images Database
Figures, graphs, charts and other illustrations from PubMed Central articles are now searchable thanks to a new Images Database. This database will be expanded over time to include images from other NCBI full-text sources.
When a PubMed search retrieves citations for articles with indexed images, thumbnail-sized versions of those images will appear on the abstract screen and link out to the Images database.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has launched a new digital repository, Digital Collections. This new resource is complementary to the PubMed Central digital archive of electronic journal articles. The repository allows rich searching, browsing and retrieval of monographs and films from NLM’s History of Medicine Division. Additional content and other format types will be added over time. Users can perform full-text and keyword searching within each collection or across the entire repository.
The first release of Digital Collections includes a selection of 11 historical U.S. government films and a set of Cholera Online monographs, including 518 books (dating from 1817 to 1900) about cholera pandemics of that period. (Source: Dragonfly)

A Voyage to Health explores the recent revival of the ancient arts of navigation and voyaging of the people of Hawai’i. The exhibition explores this resurgence and its significance for health, well-being, and self-determination. Unlike our other traveling banner exhibitions, this show does not have an online exhibition to accompany the traveling show. But the story of traditional voyaging will be covered as part of the companion website for the National Library of Medicine’s larger exhibition about Native peoples’ concepts of health and illness, scheduled to open in October 2011.
Editor’s Note: Neil Rambo has served as Acting Director of the Pacific Northwest Regional Medical Library for the past two years. He has served NN/LM PNR and the University of Washington Libraries for the past two decades. Neil will be leaving us this month for New York City, where he will be the Director of the NYU Health Science Libraries and Knowledge Informatics, and Director of NN/LM’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Medical Library. We wish Neil all the best in his new endeavors!

I don’t look back much. I always feel I don’t have time to reflect; only a need to move on.
October is National Medical Librarians Month, a time to promote and celebrate the important work of health information professionals. Here at NN/LM PNR, we’re using Twitter to spread the word about the value of health information professionals, especially those here in our own region.

Every day in October, we’ll highlight at least one project using the Twitter hashtag #medlibmonth. For example:

Using the hashtag ensures that all of the Medical Librarians Month tweets will be retrieved together in a search, or simply by clicking on the tag. Here are the #medlibmonth tweets for October 1 – 8. Even if you’re not a Twitter user, be sure to check it out. You may have already been Tweeted!

Several studies have found that while the majority of youth report using the Internet for health questions, they often lack skills to screen search results for quality answers. To help address this gap, the University of Washington Center for Public Health Nutrition has announced a new curriculum resource for school health personnel, librarians and educators:
Connecting Youth to Quality Health Information

This resource is an interactive lesson plan that aims to increase high school students’ capabilities to access and evaluate quality health information on the Internet. The lesson plan promotes MedlinePlus as a recognized resource, and addresses state and national health education standards. Open source software is often described as being free as in free kittens, not free lunch. Sure, you can use it, enjoy it, and even customize it without paying a cent, but who’s going to maintain it? Do you have someone with the systems knowledge and programming skills to really make it work for you?

Librarian and open source advocate Nicole Engard recently shared two very useful slide presentations. The first presentation addresses some common questions about open source, including:

Concerns about quality, security, and support
The role of the developer community in quality control and innovation
How open source software is being used by businesses and libraries

The second presentation, embedded below, gives 54 examples of open source software prod...

The National Library of Medicine announces the addition of Hanaoka Seishu’s Surgical Casebook to its growing collection of virtual books and manuscripts available for thumbing through online via Turning the Pages. The virtual volume marks the continued collaboration of the Library’s Lister Hill Center and the History of Medicine Division.
The newest addition to Turning the Pages is a magnificently illustrated manuscript depicting the likenesses of the men and women who came to Hanaoka for treatment in early 19th-century Japan. It is the first in the collection in which users will turn the pages according to Japanese custom, right to left.

The Librarian of Congress recently announced several new exemptions from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Enacted in 1998, the DMCA typically prohibits the circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted digital works. The Act also includes a provision for the U.S. Copyright Office to hold rulemaking discussions every three years, and to amend rules at its discretion. Some of this year’s new exemptions are as follows:

Cell phone owners may legally circumvent technological protections on their devices (this is commonly known as “jailbreaking”) for purposes of switching service providers, or to use applications not officially approved by the phone maker. This impacts iPhone users most notably.

Attention Physician Assistants! We are seeking PAs (and PA students who have completed their clinical rotations) to provide feedback on a health literacy tutorial.

According to Healthy People 2010, health literacy is “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.”
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific NW Region, is currently evaluating a web-based tutorial called “Addressing Health Information Literacy.” The tutorial was created by the Medical Library Association to assist clinicians with promoting improved health information literacy.
With this tutorial, we hope to deepen understanding and awareness of the impact of health ...

Staff at the National Library of Medicine have been working to develop NLM’s social media presence and to make more of NLM’s online resources accessible on mobile devices (see Mobile MedlinePlus and these iPhone apps). Susannah Fox, Associate Director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, was recently invited to NLM to share the latest data about how Americans of every living generation are using the Web to look for health information.
Susannah posted an excellent synopsis of her talk at e-patients.net. Ponder these points:
“… chronic disease has an independent, positive effect on an internet user’s likelihood to use social media for health: to blog, to contribute to online health discussion, to access hospital reviews, doctor reviews, and podcasts.&#8...

EFTS, a joint effort between the National Library of Medicine and the University of Connecticut, is a system used by health sciences libraries to process payment of document delivery transactions. From a tab within DOCLINE, EFTS members easily build a transaction file and submit it for payment. EFTS eliminates the need to produce invoices or write checks. Benefits of EFTS participation include reduced costs, improved cash flow, reduction of human error, increased efficiency, and reports of transactions.
