            <description>As all the recent years the “One day on the liver” – a day dedicated to
liver support systems and therapeutic strategies in the case of a
failing liver - will take place during the ESAO 2008 meeting in Geneva.For
the first time we organised the &amp;quot;Young investigators&amp;#39; Liver Session&amp;quot;.
We asked the heads of several groups working in the field to send one
of their best students to present their latest results. This session is
dedicated to PhD students and is chaired by PhD students involved in
liver support research. Of course all participants of the meeting are
invited to attend!The ESAO One Day on the Liver 2008 (ODOL) will take place Thursday, Sept. 4th, 2008.

            <description>The Translational Centre for Regenerative Medicine (TRM) Leipzig, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education and the Free State of Saxony, is charged with the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies as well as preclinical models in regenerative medicine.
For its new funding period that starts in 2009, researchers are invited to apply for awards to pursue research from bench-to-bedside.

high-throughput screening, electronics can be added to the chip. Using

            <description>Stelic Institute &amp; Co., a Tokyo-based bioventure company specializing in regenerative medicine, has announced development of a new treatment method for acute liver failure: The Company's Stem Cell Dynamism Research Team has shown that a protein called chemokine1 CXCL102 directly affects hepatic cells, regulating their replication and proliferation. Research results demonstrated for the first time that hepatic cells possess a mechanism for attempting to repair the wide-ranging hepatic cell necrosis associated with drug-induced acute liver failure, and that anti-CXCL10 antibodies strengthen this type of self-repairing function at the in vivo level.

two-compartment model (V(c), V(p)) with central elimination (K) and
constant generation rate (G). The transfer of solute between
compartments was modeled by intercompartmental clearance (K(pc)). The
central compartment (V(c)) was assumed as a constant fraction of total
volume (V(c) = 0.3*V(t)). Eight patients were studied during
35 treatments lasting 6 h each. The average K, V(t), K(pc), G, and mass

            <description>An ideal extracorporeal liver support system has to provide the main functions of the liver: detoxification, synthesis and regulation. But do we need such an ideal in all clinical situations and can we afford it? The critical issue of the clinical syndrome in liver failure is the accumulation of toxins not cleared by the failing liver. The Mayo machine is loaded with 200 grams of freshly isolated pig hepatocytes, which is about 20% of liver mass of normal human liver. The research is being conducted by a group of associates led by Scott L. Nyberg M.D., Ph.D..

            <description>In conclusion, HT using SHs showed hepatic repopulation similar to that using FHs. This suggests that both SHs and FHs can repopulate the liver as if they were hepatic stem cells. In addition, HT using SHs supported liver functions such as albumin correction at the same level as that using FHs. These observations strongly support the idea that SHs could be an alternative to primary FHs as a novel cell source for future HT.
