Riboflavin's time-dependent degradation rate induced by ultraviolet A irradiation.

Conclusions. The time-dependent degradation of riboflavin solution is significant, reaching 20.6% after 30 minutes of UVA exposure. It seems that only a small fraction of the overall riboflavin molecules break down since more than 65% remain intact even after 1 hour of UVA irradiation. Control riboflavin solution seems to be stable, as no degradation is evident even after 60 minutes.

Conclusions. Mechanical and thermal effects, induced by femtosecond laser pulses on the human corneal stroma, were seen with AFM. Surface regularity of the photodisrupted stroma was inversely and non-linearly related to the pulse energy. The femtosecond laser provided high surface quality for lamellar resection of the posterior stroma comparable to those provided by mechanical devices.

Conclusions. The POAG, PXG, PEX, and CG groups demonstrated both qualitative and quantitative tonographic profile differences. The observed differences in the glaucoma groups suggest a distinct pathomechanism between POAG and PXG. It is suggested that POAG patients have a temporary disruption of the AH flow pathway, while PXG patients have a generalized increased flow resistance.

Conclusions. Travoprost BAK-free safely and effectively lowers IOP in eyes with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This BAK-free formulation has comparable safety, efficacy, and duration of IOP-lowering effect to travoprost preserved with BAK. Travoprost BAK-free is an effective option for IOP reduction while avoiding BAK exposure.

Conclusions. The slow resorbable highly crosslinked sodium hyaluronate drainage implant fills up the intrascleral and subconjunctival space, preventing postoperative scarring and fibrosis of the filtering site and helping to maintain a functional filtration after nonpenetrating glaucoma surgery. The IOP was significantly lowered with few numbers of postoperative complications and less medication.

Conclusions. The results of our study suggested a lack of correlation between the changes in IOP, measured with either DCT or GAT, and the changes in the retrobulbar hemodynamic parameters. The results of our study might suggest that the blood flow disturbances found in glaucoma patients are independent of the IOP.

Conclusions. Up to the age of 40 years, 15% of patients were diagnosed with glaucoma per age decade. Frequent bilateral glaucoma and similar bilateral height of intraocular pressure suggest a genetic glaucoma disposition with malformation at Schlemm canal, besides possible sequential anatomic changes in the chamber angle. Associated ocular abnormalities limit visual prognosis.

Conclusions. The therapeutic approach should include both small-gauge vitrectomy and ILM peeling to relieve vitreoretinal traction, as well as laser photocoagulation of the temporal margin of the optic disc in order to prevent vitreous fluid from entering the subretinal/intraretinal space. In addition, the patients should be told that visual recovery can take a long time.

Conclusions. The RFI provides a noninvasive technique to assess early hemodynamic responses to intravitreal injection of Avastin. These early changes may prove important for better understanding of the mechanism underlying this treatment and serve as a quantitative marker for treatment optimization.

Conclusions. The diagnosis of a bilateral lens luxation must be followed by complete systemic examination and genetic analysis of the FBN1 gene in order to discard MFS due to its severe systemic complications. Frequently, the condition causes an aggressive secondary glaucoma that requires surgical treatment with lensectomy, vitrectomy, and drainage device implantation in order to avoid its devastating progression toward glaucomatous optic atrophy.

Conclusions. Patients treated with lutein/zeaxanthin and astaxanthin together with other nutrients were more likely to report clinically meaningful stabilization/improvements in VA, CS, and visual function through 24 months compared with nontreated subjects. Further studies are needed with more patients and for longer periods of time.

Conclusions. If a timely and adequate treatment of the traumatically dislocated transplant can be given, it is likely that the transplant will survive. Nevertheless, severely reduced visual acuity (i.e., < hand movement) and lens damage at the time of trauma are the most reliable predictors for the final visual outcome. A permanent loss of visual acuity is related rather to the intraocular damage (vitreous loss, vitreous bleeding, retinal tears, and retinal detachment) than to the readapted transplant itself.

Conclusions. Traditional validation methods indicate that the Greek NEI-RQL-42 scale has adequate psychometric properties for comparative studies in local populations. Rasch analysis indicates significant misfits to the model that should be taken into consideration and evaluated in future studies. These misfits might reflect inherent weaknesses of the original NEI-RQL-42 and not of its adaptation to Greek norms.

This study suggests that PET/CT improves the yield of detecting both extrahepatic metastases, especially from tumors defined as AJCC-T4, and synchronous primary cancers, irrespective of the size of the uveal melanoma. With respect to liver metastases, PET/CT demonstrated high sensitivity and positive predictive values, indicating an overall better performance than conventional screening procedures.

Moderately elevated glucose levels in the first week of life are associated with the development of ROP. They contribute to this multifactorial disease in a way equal to the known classical risk factors for ROP. Therefore, careful monitoring of glucose levels by CGMS can be helpful in the prevention of ROP.

Conclusions. Coats disease must be considered as a chronic disease, which necessitates a very long-term follow-up even in the absence of subjective visual loss. The disease can reawaken and recur with force in previously unaffected areas of the retina several decades later. The gold standard treatment consists of cryotherapy and argon laser. However, in cases of very important retinal exudation, surgical management with subretinal drainage may be necessary.

Conclusions. Vitrectomy with ILM peeling and 20% C2F6 gas with a brief postoperative 1 night prone posturing regimen is a reasonable approach to achieve anatomic closure in idiopathic macular hole. Concurrent cataract extraction did not alter outcomes and was not associated with any additional complications.

Conclusions. An easy method to measure CA of EOM and orbit allowed us to observe that in most patients with GO the OM/TOA ratio decreases with time, suggesting that macroscopic EOM involvement occurs initially and resolves as the other clinical signs and symptoms of the disease resolve, as indicated by the significant OM/TOA ratio correlation with CAS.

Conclusions. This case report reveals that ABCA4 gene mutation may be complicated by multiple and bilateral CNVs. Intravitreal injection of ranibizumab can achieve temporary CNV stabilization, but cannot guarantee complete quiescence over a long-term follow-up. Other therapeutic approaches could be necessary to accomplish visual acuity preservation.

Conclusions. Loss of foveal hypoautofluorescence and increased FAF corresponding to the nontelangiectatic angiographic leakage areas were predominant features. Fundus autofluorescence patterns corresponding to color photography and FA findings may further add to the understanding of morphologic alterations in type 2A nonproliferative IJRT at early stages.

Conclusions. Highly myopic eyes showed decreased CH and CRF. As the AL increased the IOPcc also increased and the CH decreased. We conclude that the biomechanical properties of the cornea change with elongation of the eye and this may have an impact on IOP measurement.

Conclusions. Amplitudes are significantly reduced, with a scaling factor of 8.75 for the b-wave amplitude of the cone ERG compared to corneal electrodes (9.6 for the a-wave amplitude and 8.87 for the flicker amplitude). Our study contributes to the establishment of normative data for skin electrode ERG. It emphasizes the feasibility and accuracy of this method. It is very useful to assess the normality of the ERG in many clinical situations, such as nystagmus and suspicion of delayed visual maturation.

Conclusions. When using the 25-gauge cannula system, incarceration of anterior vitreous fibers into the cannulae of 3 ports from the beginning of surgery was clearly depicted in eyes with asteroid hyalosis. Excising the incarcerated anterior vitreous fibers is useful to ensure good perfusion and prevent vitreous prolapse.

Conclusions. The patient experienced no visual symptoms during his entire working life, but acquired an exudative maculopathy in his left eye at age 67. Two years later, a central subretinal neovascular membrane affected the right eye. The latter responded only temporarily to photodynamic therapy (Visudyne), and from age 71 he had best-corrected visual acuities <0.1 in both eyes, with eccentric fixation. We are not aware of any report on late macular involvement in this disorder. Whether the maculopathy should be considered a late manifestation of the sector chorioretinopathy or a coincidental occurrence of age-related macular degeneration remains unsettled.

Conclusions. A decrease of ocular lesion mean size and a mean improvement of VA were observed after antituberculous therapy. Our long-term follow-up of chorioretinal lesions demonstrated relapse of ocular tuberculosis in 10% of patients with confirmed ocular TB, despite complete initial retinal scarring.

Conclusions. Malingering in children is very frequent. We can make the diagnosis with simple tests. It is not necessary to perform imaging and electrophysiologic testing, thus avoiding unnecessary examinations as well as absenteeism from work for parents and health care costs.

Conclusions. One possible reason for a large hole in an excavated disc is origination of the tear from a congenital defect, such as an optic pit. The retinal detachment in patients with MGS with a large hole in the disc can be treated with triamcinolone-assisted pars plana vitrectomy and retinal photocoagulation along the excavated disc. This case has shown that one critical component for a high success rate is the tamponade agent used in the vitreous.

Conclusions. The most common risk factor for childhood microbial keratitis was corneal trauma. The most frequent bacteria isolated were coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, whereas the predominant fungi isolated were Fusarium species. Early diagnosis, intensive drug therapy, and timely surgical intervention may effectively improve the prognosis of pediatric microbial keratitis.

Conclusions. Pascal dynamic contour tonometer could provide more consistent and closer to the true IOP readings than GAT and ORA in healthy eyes with corneal thickness outside the 520-550 µm range, in keratoconus patients and after CXL. Corneal resistance factor was associated significantly with agreement among devices.

Severe ocular pain in this patient was caused by intraocular neovascularization and subsequent increased eyeball content by vitreous hemorrhage associated with the choroidal tumor. In NF-1 with orbitofacial involvement, detection of intraocular tumor by imaging tests may predict tumor-associated severe ophthalmic complications.

Conclusions. The ACM and vitrectomy probe are important tools in the surgical management of congenital pupillary-iris-lens membrane because they facilitate the surgical procedure and reduce iatrogenic damage to the lens. Timely surgical intervention can abort the progressive pupillary occlusion or angle closure glaucoma.

Conclusions. In patients with macular edema in retinal vein occlusion, sustained-release dexamethasone 0.7 mg intravitreal implant may be an effective treatment option to control macular edema. At the final visit, foveal thickness was decreased to physiologic levels in all eyes. In parallel with resolution of the macular edema, visual acuity was significantly improved at the final visit. However, final visual acuity in eyes with still interrupted or thickened IS/OS interface was significantly poorer than that in eyes with a normal IS/OS line.

Conclusions. The results suggest the existence of a gender factor in cataract formation and coincide with those obtained in similar studies performed in areas at a similar latitude (40º N) and with different race population. The geographical location (intensity and length of exposure to solar radiation) seems to be a determining factor in the formation of a specific type of cataract, more than race, although there are other factors that contribute in the formation of a specific type of cataract.

Conclusions. We report a case of orbital abscess following dacryocystitis in a healthy middle-aged woman resulting in the rare complication of central retinal artery occlusion. To our knowledge, this is the first report of central retinal artery occlusion secondary to orbital abscess following dacryocystitis.

Conclusions. The major finding of our study is that posterior dislocation of nuclear lens fragments is associated with worse visual outcome than that of non-nuclear fragments. This may be related to a more complicated course of the cataract surgery, direct mechanical damage to the retina, a stronger inflammatory response, or a more traumatic vitrectomy procedure.

Conclusions. Ultrasound biomicroscopy characterization of failed blebs appears to help in predicting the outcome of needle revision. In SRO blebs, it may be better to plan a full bleb revision rather than needling alone. Ultrasound biomicroscopy may help in avoiding an unnecessary needling procedure in SRO blebs where it is likely to fail.

Conclusions. Emphasis should shift to team building and ensuring available workers perform optimally rather than meeting the absolute numbers of some cadre, which does not guarantee improved output. Issues of equitable distribution, appropriate staff mix, filling identified gaps in human resources, and addressing poor service uptake should be the focus to reach the goals of Vision 2020: The Right to Sight.

Conclusions. The authors report spontaneous resolution of VMT associated with blunt trauma. As spontaneous resolution may occur in some eyes with VMT following traumatic acute incomplete vitreous detachment, a period of observation may be considered prior to vitrectomy. Spectral domain OCT is a useful tool in following the evolution of these patients.

Conclusions. Ocular toxoplasmosis is a common cause of uveitis. Our patients were more likely than general uveitis patients to be young, male, and Latino, often having emigrated from Mexico or Central or South America. The most common contributors to decreased vision in eyes with active lesions were inflammation and macular involvement, whereas in eyes with inactive lesions they were macular scar formation and amblyopia.
