Conclusions. Cataract is not as highly prevalent in the elderly active driving population as in the general population, but is frequently present in drivers over 65 years of age. Lower prevalence of severe bilateral cataracts in countries with mandatory tests of visual functions of drivers suggest that this could be a suitable measure to detect and to reduce the number of active drivers with severe bilateral cataracts.

Conclusions. Monitored anesthesia care is feasible for cataract surgery both under PA or TA. PA still remains an appealing alternative to TA during cataract surgery for patients incapable of keeping the operating eye in the primary position or with incoercible blinking, photophobia, or phacodonesis. A greater incidence of agitation is to be expected and adequate premedication with anxiolytics should be considered if PA is chosen.

Conclusions. The EM-935 specular microscope showed better repeatability for the semiautomated mode compared with the automated mode. Although measurement agreement with the Noncon Robo was somewhat better for the semiautomated mode, agreement was only moderate for both methods. This leads us to recommend that these instruments should not be used interchangeably.

Conclusions. Bilateral superior and lateral rectus myopexy is the preferred method of surgical correction of esotropia associated with high myopia. Additional unilateral or bilateral medial rectus recession is probably not indicated in most cases. Patients who prefer unilateral surgery can benefit from unilateral superior and lateral rectus myopexy together with medial rectus recession. This unilateral approach may yield good results particularly in young patients without markedly restricted and tight extraocular muscles.

Conclusions. In our study, it was found that more mature infants may also develop threshold ROP and require early treatment. After more information is gained and widespread screening, screening protocols covering more mature infants can be designed especially for developing countries.

Conclusions. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of keratitis after implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments (Intacs) aided by femtosecond laser for keratoconus correction. Prompt and adequate treatment is essential to prevent irreversible reduction of visual acuity.

Conclusions. Our findings show that measuring serum lycopene is a novel convenient method for evaluating oxidative damage. Diabetic patients, especially those with advanced diabetic retinopathy, had significantly lower serum lycopene levels; this suggests that lycopene may be helpful for the diagnosis, severity, and therapeutic evaluation of diabetic retinopathy.

Conclusions. Retinal arterial embolization is a rare but potentially devastating complication of calcific aortic stenosis. Initial retinal presentation of calcific aortic stenosis is a rare condition. Keeping in mind that these emboli may be recurrent and potentially bilateral, a sudden onset of visual field defects, especially in young asymptomatic patients, needs immediate diagnosis and consideration of an urgent surgical correction.

Conclusions. Excluding a masquerade syndrome and a paraneoplastic syndrome on the basis of clinical features, uveitis represents an immune response to the concurrent tumor. The good response to steroid therapy is in accordance with this hypothesis. This is the first case of uveitis with hypopyon as presenting symptom of a metastatic peritoneal carcinomatosis developing 20 years after the removal of primitive breast cancer.

Conclusions. Confocal microscopy was able to provide detailed images of corneal alterations in CS. This confirmed the interstitial nature of the keratitis and showed an excellent accordance with prior histopathologic findings. The absence of inflammatory cell infiltration may be explained by the prolonged control of ocular inflammation in our patients, which may also have limited stimuli for corneal neovascularization.

Conclusions. Humphrey Matrix FDT perimetry showed a statistically significant learning effect on MD and the number of significantly depressed points of the total deviation map in glaucoma patients with no perimetric experience. It is probably necessary to obtain at least 3 repetitions to rule out the presence of a learning effect in such patients before providing useful results.

Conclusions. The case is presented to point out arteriovenous malformation as a possible cause of retinal hemorrhages in this age group where an early diagnosis of the etiology is often not possible. A diagnosis of NAI, commonly associated with a similar clinical presentation, can have serious social and legal implications.

Conclusions. To date, this is the second reported case of postoperative endophthalmitis by this species. Although endophthalmitis is rare, ophthalmologists should be alert to the possibility of patients having endophthalmitis caused by G morbillorum. Especially, it is necessary to be cautious with surgery in patients with recent infections. A review of the medical literature of this rare ocular infection is presented.

Conclusions. Intravitreal ranibizumab may create focal sites of tractional forces on the retinal surface while contraction of the choroidal neovascular membrane may also place forces on the RPE and outer retina. Both actions may have as a result contraction and tearing of the retina leading to the formation of a FTMH.

Conclusions. It is well known that topical NSAIDs cause corneal perforation. Observations in the present cases suggest that the oral administration of NSAIDs may also cause corneal damage, and hence, medical professionals should consider the risk of damage to the cornea when administering these drugs orally.

Conclusions. Treatment options and treatment studies of Bowen disease are difficult because there are a variety of different protocols and the success of the management depends on several factors (body site, lesion size, number of lesions, and thickness). In the conjunctival localization of the lesion, amniotic membrane transplantation appears to be a useful therapeutic choice after surgical resection of the lesion used to reconstruct ocular and conjunctival surface.

Conclusions. Our study showed types of adenoviruses in patients with ocular infection that occurred in this region of Turkey for the first time. Furthermore, sequence-based typing method is an efficient, accurate, and rapid means of diagnosis and typing of the adenovirus and has significant clinical and epidemiologic implications. HAdV-8 was major type for acute conjunctivitis in Ankara, Turkey. Further studies are required to reveal the major types of HAdVs that cause ocular diseases in this region of the world.

Conclusions. Results for 18-month follow-ups of 1-site and 2-site phacotrabeculectomies were comparable in terms of visual acuity, antiglaucoma medication requirements, and postoperative complications. While lowering of IOP was more pronounced in the 2-site group, this was not clinically significant.

Conclusions. No specimens (0%) aspirated on entry into the anterior chamber or obtained at the conclusion of surgery were positive for microorganisms on culture or eubacterial polymerase chain reaction. None of the eyes developed acute endophthalmitis. The incidence of anterior chamber bacterial contamination during phacoemulsification recovered in this study using eubacterial polymerase chain reaction and conventional culture was null (0%).

Conclusions. Traumatic hyphema is a recognized cause of significant visual disability. Improved visual acuity was attained after 3 months. The presenting visual acuity correlated with the visual prognosis. Patients with posterior segment complications tended to have poorer visual outcomes. The presence of the sickle cell gene increased the risk of secondary glaucoma.

Conclusions. Any viscoelastic material may be contaminated by heat-stable bacterial endotoxic as it is prepared by gene-coded bacteria. It is suggested that Multivisc BD was the etiologic factor of TASS. Refractive surgeons should be aware of this rare complication of phakic IOL implantation whenever they use a new viscoelastic material.

Conclusions. The second branch of the trigeminal nerve may be damaged in the course of orbital floor removal decompression for Graves' orbitopathy. This may potentially induce the formation of traumatic or amputation neuromas. Such lesions should be included in the potential complications of decompressions when counseling patients about to undergo this type of surgery, as they are difficult to treat and may cause persistent and disabling pain.

Conclusions. IOP increased significantly in a considerable number of patients after intravitreal ranibizumab injections. A rapid and spontaneous decline was observed in the majority of cases. If there is no subconjunctival reflux after the injection, the increase in IOP is higher than in eyes with any backflow under the conjunctiva.

Conclusions. Periorbital NF behaves differently from NF of other areas. CT-guided surgical debridement of the superficial muscle maximizes preservation of healthy tissue and facilitates reconstruction. Delayed reconstruction allows fibrosis to settle and good cosmetic and functional results are possible. However, NF remains potentially lethal and close observation and a flexible management plan are required.

Conclusions. Disturbances on the level of RPE, choroid, and Bruch membrane may be responsible for the ocular lesions in PXE. OCT may give clues to the pathophysiology of the retinal lesions. Spectral domain OCT could provide more details and information. Further studies using this new technology should be performed.

CONCLUSIONS: Reasonably good postoperative visual acuity was achieved in the bilateral cataracts group, but relatively poor acuity in the unilateral cataract group. Poor stereopsis was recorded in both groups. One child developed glaucoma. None of the children developed retinal detachment. The expected myopic shift in the unilateral group compared with the bilateral group was demonstrated. Elective primary capsulotomy and elective anterior vitrectomy are mandatory to keep a clear visual axis.

CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that patients treated by individual monotherapies in the United States demonstrate a lower pressure, but generally are more often considered uncontrolled, than those in Germany. This finding, if true, indicates a possible variance in treatment goals, or access to treatment, between the United States and Germany in treating patients with elevated pressure.

CONCLUSIONS: The 3D test identified and characterized scotomas typical of glaucoma. The test provides several advantages over conventional perimetry including additional information through 3D depiction of scotomas with the addition of contrast sensitivity and a higher angular/spatial resolution. Improved patient compliance and reliability through shorter testing time and potential interactive accessibility and distribution over the Internet further characterize the test.

CONCLUSIONS: PCR on intraocular specimens as an etiologic diagnostic tool has been shown to be specific and severalfold more sensitive than cultures and clinically useful. Therefore, PCR may be considered the gold standard to establish the etiology of infectious endophthalmitis. As there is no statistically significant difference in the results of PCR on AH and VF, PCR on AH could be the method of choice considering safety and simplicity of the procedure of its collection.

CONCLUSIONS: Ocular complications from topical cocaine abuse are rare. Impaired color vision, as in our patient, has been reported in cocaine-withdrawn patients. To our knowledge, this is the first described case of a bilateral and symmetric maculopathy associated with long-term intranasal cocaine use. To avoid a delay of treatment, ophthalmologists should be aware that a maculopathy with small defects in color vision may be related to adulterants added to cocaine when it is used intranasally.

CONCLUSIONS: Massive spontaneous choroidal hemorrhage is an extremely rare event that usually has been described in older patients (65-87 years old) receiving anticoagulants or thrombolytic agents. Systemic hypertension, generalized atherosclerosis, and age-related macular degeneration are additional risk factors. In the present case, massive choroidal hemorrhage was associated with use of clopidogrel bisulfate (Plavix) in a patient with chronic renal failure. Our report indicates that Plavix should be administered with caution in patients with chronic renal failure owing to the risk of serious choroidal bleeding. Chronic renal failure should be also included in the list of risk factors for massive spontaneous choroidal hemorrhage. Evacuative sclerotomies may have value in the relief of pa...

CONCLUSIONS: The rapid development of foveal geographic atrophy in our patient may be related to the antivascular endothelial growth factor treatment, in part because of the reduced neuroprotective effect, and in part because of the adjunctive decreased blood flow in an already imbalanced foveal choroidal circulation due to AMD complicated by chronic serous drusenoid PED.
