Please read the press release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for specific details about the type of cribs being recalled and the dangers they pose. If you are currently using one of these cribs it is important that you stop using it immediately and wait to receive your free repair kit to fix the problem and ensure the crib’s safety. For more information, contact Stork Craft toll-free at 877-274-0277.
In the meantime, please use the following information to make sure that your baby has a safe place to sleep.
Every year thousands of babies die because they are put to sleep in unsafe places. This far exceeds the very small number of deaths that have occurred as a result of this faulty hardware. It is critical for parents to know that despite these reports, the safest pla...

CONCLUSIONS: In healthy term newborns, significant desaturations were observed in both car beds and car seats as compared with hospital cribs. This study was limited by lack of documentation of sleep stage. Therefore, these safety devices should only be used for protection during travel and not as replacements for cribs.

A recent study, conducted by Dr. Rachel Moon at the Children’s National Medical Center and published in Pediatrics, found that in magazines targeting women of childbearing age, more than one-third showed babies in unsafe sleep positions and more than two thirds showed babies in unsafe sleep environments.

Messages in the media that are inconsistent with health care messages can create confusion and misinformation about infant sleep safety and may inadvertently lead to unsafe practices.

As members of the media are critical to our ability to save babies’ lives, First Candle will soon launch a Call to Action among print, electronic and broadcast media venues and their advertisers to create, select and use only images that depict babies (who appear...

Small Study Identifies Possible Link Between SIDS and Babies with Inner Ear Abnormalities
Possibilities exist for further research
In the case-controlled study, the newborn hearing tests of 31 SIDS victims were compared to those of 31 newborn infants that survived the first year of life. While healthy babies typically have stronger hearing in their right ear, all 31 of the SIDS cases studied had stronger hearing in their left ear. While much work is needed to replicate these results, the research team is optimistic that this knowledge may some day allow doctors to identify babies at increased risk for SIDS.

Dr. Daniel D. Rubens, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital and lead author of the study, theorizes that the inner ear is important in trans...

A study published in the January issue of Pediatrics describes how tobacco smoke contamination lingers even after a cigarette is extinguished - a phenomenon the authors define as "third-hand" smoke. The study is the first to examine adult attitudes about the health risks to children of third-hand smoke and how those beliefs may relate to rules about smoking in their homes.12/29/2008 (Source: First Candle)

Representative Peter King from New York has introduced a bill to raise awareness about stillbirth that seeks to standardize the definition of stillbirth, and the method in which stillbirth data is collected, so there can be a national repository for stillbirth data with which to conduct comprehensive research efforts. The bill also authorizes a campaign to increase public awareness of good prenatal care practices that may decrease the risk of stillbirth, including monitoring movements during the last trimester. The proposed bill and supporting documents are attached. 09/01/2008 (Source: First Candle)
