Abstract The protective ability of host defense system is largely dependent on germ-line encoded pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs).
These PRRs respond to a variety of exogenous pathogens or endogenous danger signals, by recognizing some highly conserved
structures such as pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and danger/damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs).
The most studied PRRs are Toll-like receptors (TLRs). Activation of TLRs triggers production of inflammatory cytokines and
type I interferons (IFNs) via myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88)-dependent or -independent signaling
respectively, thereby modulating innate and adaptive immunity, as well as inflammatory responses. This review introduces the
classification, structure, and s...

In conclusion,
the peak of recurrence was almost totally concentrated in the first year; meanwhile, the first year follow-up is of critical
importance in China. It may not be necessary to do the follow-up examination during the second and third years, but after
three years, another colonoscopy should be undertaken.

Abstract In documenting clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of graft versus host disease (GVHD), we retrospectively analyzed data of one case that has developed GVHD after liver transplantation. This
patient exhibited fever, skin rash, and diarrhea on day 9 after liver transplantation. His liver function was normal. Skin
biopsy showed scattered keratinocytes accompanied by satellite-like lymphocyte infiltration and basal cell liquefaction degeneration.
After carefully analyzing the complications, we took the strategy of decreasing the dose of tacrolimus. Thereafter, the patient’s
temperature decreased to normal, his skin rashes subsided, and his diarrhea was relieved. This case suggests that reducing
the dosage of immunosuppressive agents can be an effectiv...

Abstract Cystic echinococcosis (CE) (hydatidosis, hydatid disease) is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus, typically affecting the liver. Hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE) is often asymptomatic, and symptoms occur largely when
complications develop. Up to one-third of HCE can be shown their complications such as rupture of the cyst, secondary infection,
and anaphylactic reaction. Clinically, patients present with pain, obstructive jaundice, cholangitis, anaphylactic reaction,
and shock. Early diagnosis and treatment of complications of CE must be very important, since mortality is high when obstruction
of the biliary ducts occurs, leading to ascending cholangitis and septicemia, anaphylactic shock, or even life-threatening
conditions.

Abstract Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, first described by Klatskin in 1965, is a relatively rare tumor arising from the bile ducts. The
histomorphological features of hilar cholangiocarcinoma are identical with other extra- and intra-hepatic bile duct carcinomas.
The most common disease associated with cholangiocarcinoma is primary sclerosing cholangitis. The development of cholangiocarcinoma
is a multistep process associated with several mutations in oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes. Based on macroscopic appearance,
three distinct subtypes have been described: sclerosing, nodular, and papillary. Microscopically, more than 95% of tumors
are adenocarcinomas. Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is a slowly growing tumor and tends to spread longitudinally along the bile
ducts with neura...

Abstract In order to compare the effects of Bassini and tension-free mesh hernioplasty, a total of 552 patients with inguinal hernia
who were subjected to surgical treatment in our hospital were randomly divided into the following two groups: the Bassini
group (n = 269) and the tension-free mesh group (n = 283). The recurrence rates, pain, discomfort, and other complications were recorded, and the causes of the complications
were explored. The recurrence rate in the Bassini group was 8.9% (24/269), significantly higher than that in the tension-free
repair group (2.8%, 8/283). In addition, the recurrence rates in the Bassini and tension-free groups before 2004 were 12.6%
and 5.6%, respectively, which were markedly higher than the rates after 2004 (5.3% and 0.7%, respectively...

Abstract Developing esophageal cancer is a multi-step process that begins with the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations,
and leads to the activation of oncogenes and the inactivation or loss of tumor suppressor genes (TSG). In addition to genetic
alteration, epigenetic modifications, and in particular DNA methylation, are recognized as a common molecular alteration in
human tumors. In esophageal cancer, aberrant methylation of promoter regions occurs not only in advanced cancer, but also
in premalignant lesions. DNA methylation is related to survival time and sensitivity of chemoradiotherapy. This review is
mainly focused on epigenetic changes in esophageal cancer and the value of early detection for patient prognosis, treatment
choices, and potential targeti...

Abstract β-catenin is a key molecule involved in both cell-cell adhesion and Wnt signaling pathway. In our study, we found that, in
the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), β-catenin was correlated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) X gene encoded protein,
which is essential for HBV infectivity and is a potential cofactor in viral carcinogenesis. The expression levels of wild-type
β-catenin and E-cadherin were decreased in HepG2 cells expressing hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx), accompanied by destabilization
of adherens junction. Reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR), Northern and Western blot showed that reduction of wild-type β-catenin
expression involved degradation of the protein. However, RNA interference (RNAi) and luciferase assay indicated that HBx enhanced

Abstract Chemical biology, using small molecules as probes to study the cellular signaling network, has developed rapidly in recent
years. The interaction between chemistry and biology not only provides new insight into the understanding of cellular activities,
but also generates new lead compounds for the treatment of diseases. Transcription factors and kinases such as retinoic acid
receptor-alpha (RARα), acute myeloid leukemia 1 (AML1), CAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα), c-myc, and c-abl play important
roles in the differentiation of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. Abnormalities in these proteins may cause the dysregulation
of hematopoiesis and even the occurrence of leukemia. Ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation represents a critical mechanism

This study was performed to determine the prognostic role of preoperative serum carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 levels in the
survival of patients with cholangiocarcinoma. Articles published up to June 1st, 2010 that evaluated preoperative CA19-9 levels and the prognosis of cholangiocarcinoma were collected for metaanalysis.
The required information for calculating individual relative risk (RR) was extracted from the studies, and a combined overall
RR was estimated. Nine eligible studies were included. One study dealt with extra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma, while the other
eight studies analyzed intra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma. The mean methodological quality score was 74.1%, ranging from 65.5%
to 82.5%. The overall RR for the nine studies was 1.28 (95% confidence interval = 1.10–1.4...

This study aimed to investigate the effect of adjuvant therapy on the treatment of stage II pancreatic carcinomas. The clinical
data of 139 cases of stage II pancreatic carcinoma were analyzed retrospectively. The overall 1-, 3-, and 5-year cumulative
survival rates of 139 patients were 40%, 6%, and 3%, respectively, and the median survival time (MST) was 279 days. The MST
was 399 days for those with adjuvant therapy, 210 days for those without adjuvant therapy, 390 days for the radical resection
group, 270 days for the bypass operation and laparotomy group, and 132 days for the nonsurgical group. The adjuvant therapy
could not prolong the survival time and decrease the liver metastasis rate of the patients with stage II carcinoma significantly
in radical resection group (P>0.05)....

Abstract Nowadays, pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is still a common and severe intra-abdominal infection, and Klebsiella pneumoniae had emerged as the most common pathogenic bacteria worldwide in the past ten years. Our study aims to achieve an early pathogenic
diagnosis and rational therapy modality for Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KLA) through clinical data analysis. A total of 197 inpatients in Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai, diagnosed
as having liver abscess between March 2001 and September 2009 were enrolled. Patients with monomicrobial infection were divided
into two groups: patients with K. pneumoniae liver abscess (KLA group, n = 106) and those with non-Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (NKLA group, n = 56). A retrospective analysis was made between these two gr...

Abstract Family planning is a basic state policy in China. Its aim is to control population growth and to enhance population quality.
Technical services are the key measures for implementing the family planning policy. In order to ensure that people use safe,
effective, and appropriate contraceptive methods based on the government’s commitment, China has established countrywide family
planning service networks down to the township level. The people can access various and convenient contraceptive services.
In urban areas, all contraceptive services are free. The contraceptive prevalence rate in 2007 was 84.6%, the percentage of
intrauterine device (IUD) was 52.3%, that of female sterilization was 32.3%, and that of vasectomy was 6.1%. This means that

Abstract Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common gynecologic endocrinopathy. The pathogenesis of PCOS is associated with both
heredity and environment. PCOS has adverse impacts on female endocrine, reproduction, and metabolism. PCOS can impact women’s
reproductive health, leading to anovulatory infertility and higher rate of early pregnancy loss. PCOS has additional metabolic
derangements, such as insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, and dyslipidemia. The risks of diabetes, cardiovascular
disease, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and endometrial cancer among PCOS patients are significantly increased as well.

Abstract Patients infected through commercial blood-selling practices (former plasma donors, FPDs) in China represent a unique patient
population compared to individuals infected through sexual contact or intravenous drug use. FPDs all have an approximate time
of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection during the mid-1990s. Few studies about the natural history of HIV infection
in these patients were performed. The current study focuses on characterizing the duration of asymptomatic infection as well
as the time to disease and mortality of infected FPDs in China. A retrospective cohort study was conducted based on data collected
from 5484 HIV-1 infected FPDs in Shangcai county, Henan province. Kaplan-Meier analysis was applied to estimate the asymptomatic

Abstract High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a technique to destroy tissue at depth within the body, selectively and without
harming overlying and adjacent structures within the path of the beam because the ultrasonic intensity at the beam focus is
much higher than that outside of the focus. Diagnostic ultrasound is the first imaging modality used for guiding HIFU ablation.
In 1997, a patient with osteosarcoma was first successfully treated with ultrasound imaging-guided HIFU in Chongqing, China.
Over the last decade, thousands of patients with uterine fibroids, liver cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, bone tumors,
and renal cancer have been treated with ultrasound imaging-guided HIFU. Based on several research groups’ reports, as well

According to American Diabetes Association (ADA) gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) diagnostic criteria, among the 4179 pregnant
women who required OGTT, 3429 (82.1%) were normal and 750 (17.9%) were diagnosed as GDM. If the 3rd h glucose levels were
omitted from OGTT, 79 cases of GDM (10.5%) would be overlooked. No trend was shown where women with more risk factors were

is difficult to treat in the clinical setting. It affects 1%–5% of women of reproductive age. In the investigations of immunopathogenesis,
diagnosis, and treatment of RSA since the late 1980s, it was found that RSA was associated with abnormal maternal local or
systemic immune response. The pathogenesis of autoimmune RSA was mainly associated with antiphospholipid antibody (APA), while
that of alloimmune RSA was due to the disturbance of maternofetal immunological tolerance. Systemic etiological screening
process and diagnosis systems of RSA with immune type were developed, and anticardiolipin (ACL or ACA) + anti-β2-GP1 antibody

influences skeletal glucose metabolism and explore its mechanisms. We constructed the recombinant plasmid pcDNA3.1 expressing
resistin and then transfected it into C2C12 myocytes. The expression of resistin in C2C12 myocytes was detected by Western

Abstract The autoimmune regulator (AIRE) is a crucial factor for the induction of central tolerance, and mutations in this gene lead
to abnormal immune responses. However, the role of AIRE in autophagy in immune cells, especially in monocytes, is obscure.
In the present study, we found that overexpression of AIRE in THP-1 human monocytes resulted in increased endogenous light
chain 3 (LC3)-II level and elevated LC3 positive vesicles. Moreover, an autophagy inhibitor or knockdown of AIRE by small
interference RNA attenuated these effects. In contrast, the expression of p62/SQSTM1 remained unchanged in THP-1 cells after
the corresponding treatment. Our findings indicate that AIRE plays a role in the regulation of autophagy in THP-1 human monocytes.

In conclusion, HT is still the most effective method of relieving climacteric
symptoms for many postmenopausal women. However, a possible risk of breast cancer associated with long-term HT usage should
not be ignored. With respect to prevention of breast cancer, regular evaluation of individual breast cancer susceptibility
and close follow-up through mammography and/or breast sonography are necessary strategies for the safety of HT use.

in order to provide evidence-based formulation of a TB/HIV co-infection control strategy in China. Four counties with different
modes of HIV transmission and varying cooperation mechanisms between TB and HIV institutions were selected. HIV test among
TB patients and TB examination among people living with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were conducted. Patients
also completed questionnaires on potential factors affecting TB/HIV co-infection. The results showed that 19 (1.7%) were HIV-positive
among 1089 cases of people living with active TB who received HIV testing. Conversely, there were 126 (10%) cases of active
TB among 125...

This study intended to find out the relationships between the environmental changes and the incidence
of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in the Big Three Gorges Area (BTGA) of Chongqing Municipality, China. Landuse
thematic maps were applied in the research. The results show that there was a significant relationship between the land-use
change in the grass area and the cumulative HFRS incidence (correlation coefficient = − 0.676, P = 0.011). In the BTGA, the land was submerged because water filled in the reservoir, and meanwhile, the government called
for returning land for farming to forestry. It is concluded that the changes of environment may influence the incidence of
HFRS.

Abstract One hundred and fifty-three isolates from the environment and 36 reference strains of the Legionella were studied with regards to their composition of cellular fatty acids as determined by gas chromatography, and then were
classified into 41 groups by numerical analysis. Most reference strains formed only a single group, except L. micdadei, L. jamestowniensis, L. parisiensis, L. jordanis, L. feeleii and L. longbeachae, which were clustered into two or three groups. Even serological types of L. pneumophila could be clearly identified. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis of cellular fatty acid composition is an effective
method for identifying Legionella species.

This article discusses the concept of health management and stresses that community health management should be the starting
point of community health service, necessitating a paradigm shift from observing the treatment-oriented medical model to observing
the prevention-and-health management-based medical model. Community health construction has entered a new phase, one which
highlights the need to train general practitioners in practice-based life cycle health management. In addition, general practitioners
should assume the mission of implementing community health management.

Abstract
Legionella is a causative agent of legionellosis or Legionnaires’ disease. Infection with Legionella spp. is an important cause of community and hospital-acquired pneumonia. Moreover, infection with Legionella is one of the most common causes of severe pneumonia in community settings, and Legionella is isolated in 40% of hospital-acquired pneumonia cases. The clinical features of legionellosis or Legionnaires’ disease
are not unique, which makes the diagnosis challenging. Macrolides and fluoroquinolones are the most widely used drugs in treatment.
Early recognition, treatment and effective measures for prevention and control of the disease are important and required.
Although there have been a lot of methods for diagnosis of Legionella infection, they were ofte...

occurs in clusters or outbreaks. The major causative agents of HFMD are coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16), human enterovirus 71 (HEV71)
and coxsackievirus A10 (CVA10), of the genus Enterovirus in the family Picornaviridae. HFMD caused by EV71 is associated with severe neurological complications and death. Since the
late 1990s, several major epidemics of EV71 HFMD have swept through the Asia-Pacific region, associated with a rapid fulminant
course, severe neurological complications, and a large number of fatalities. Until now, little has been known about the genetics

fatalities in the low-risk population despite the generally mild nature of the illness. Advances in science and technology
have allowed very detailed study on the pathogenesis of this novel virus, and many have already been published in less than
a year after the start of the pandemic. Information generated from cell lines, animal models, and clinical data analysis has
provided us with greater understanding of the behavior of this virus and the associated host response. The new knowledge will
allow us to formulate scientifically sound and evidence-based management plans.

apoptosis in cell line HL-60 cells. The mRNA and protein levels of Fas, FasL, and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein
(XIAP) were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and flow cytometry (FCM); the level of sFasL
was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); and apoptosis was determined by FCM. After treatment with Bay
11-7082, the mRNA and protein levels of FasL and XIAP in HL-60 cells were significantly lower than in the controls (P < 0.05), but the mRNA and protein levels of Fas and sFasL did not change significantly (P > 0.05).
This study examined the inhibitory effect of triptolid (TP) on tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) secreted from peripheral blood
monocular cells (PBMCs) and the association of the inhibitory effect with TNF-α-308 gene polymorphisms in rheumatoid arthritis
(RA) patients. Gene polymorphism at A-G site 308 in the promoter region of TNF-α gene was detected in 42 RA patients by using
allele specific polymerase chain reaction (AS-PCR) assay. PBMCs were harvested from these patients and treated first with
lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and then with different doses of TP (1, 5.4 and 15 ng/mL). The TNF-α level in the supernatants was
measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed that TNF-α level in the supernatants of TP (1 ng/mL)-treated
PBMCs was decreased by 3.80...

and urban medical insurance to date, the level of reimbursement from insurance is very limited, especially for critical diseases
such as leukemia. This places heavy economic burdens on patients. Under these circumstances, systems innovation is imperative
for the efficient utilization of limited funding. In this respect, certain valuable experience from other countries may prove
helpful. The prospective payment system of Diagnosis-related Groups (DRGs), Clinical Paths, and the Comparative Effectiveness

Abstract Hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx), a 17-kd protein encoded by X gene of hepatitis B virus (HBV), has been shown to function
as a transcriptional trans-activator of a variety of viral and cellular promoter/enhancer elements. The aim of the study is
to investigate the extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERKs) pathway of HBx on glomerular mesangial cell (GMC) proliferation
and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression. The HBV X gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), inserted
into the eukaryotic expression vector pCI-neo and confirmed by restriction endonuclease digestion and sequence analysis. PCI-neo
containing HBV X gene (pCI-neo-X) was then transfected into cultured GMC line via liposome. GMC proliferation, TNF-α and its
mRNA expression w...

This study was to examine the functional significance of
XPF promoter polymorphisms and their association with lung cancer risk. The function of XPF promoter polymorphisms was tested by a set of biochemical assays, and their effects on lung cancer risk were determined by
a case-control analysis of 988 patients with lung cancer and 986 controls. The XPF — 673T allele showed a significantly higher transcriptional activity as compared with the −673C allele. The −673TT genotype
was associated with a decreased risk of lung cancer compared with the CC genotype (adjusted OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.42–0.91;
P = 0.015) and this effect was more significant among males (adjusted OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.35–0.86; P = 0.009), elder subjects (adjusted OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.30–0.86; P = 0.012), a...

Abstract Stroke is a major cause of adult death and disability worldwide. Epidemiological and animal studies have provided strong evidence
that the pathogenesis of stroke is multi-factorial and induced by a combination of environmental and genetic risk factors,
but the identification of individual causative variants remains little known. Genetic influences are likely to be polygenic
with small effect sizes, and stroke itself consists of a number of different subtypes which may each have different genetic
profiles. In addition, various ethnic populations may have different stroke risk, such as Asian race. The reasons for high
risk of stroke among the Chinese, especially hemorrhagic stroke, remain unknown. Most human studies have taken a candidate

to tailor her own national policies for managing CVD with full consideration of epidemiology, local needs, and affordability.
Smoking cessation, increased physical activity, control of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, and maintenance of a “traditional

is involved in multiple cellular events such as cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. MAPK is of great importance to
the normal function of organisms, while its dysfunction results in various diseases. So far, inhibitors specifically against
each subfamilies of MAP kinase have been developed, while more endeavors are needed to discover the compounds selectively
targeting a particular subfamily member. Most of the kinase inhibitors exert their functions in an ATP-competitive way or
a non-ATP-competitive way. Further studies on the effective mechanism of the MAPK inhibitors and their therapeutic roles in

The most important and effective way to reduce VTE incidence is to identify the patients at risk and give necessary prevention.
VTE is a multifactorial and complicated disorder. Major risk factors for VTE include surgery and trauma, acute medical illness,
active cancer and pregnancy. Genetic factors increase susceptibility to the disease and are useful in predicting the development
of VTE. Gene-gene and gene-environment interactions alter and magnify the clinical picture in this disorder. This brief review
summarizes some selected clinical and genetic risk factors for VTE based on the current research in China.

This study aims to investigate the genetic association between
the polymorphism of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) family genes and schizophrenia among Han Chinese in the northern part
of China. The polymerase chain reaction-based ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR) was applied to detect the genotype ten single
nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of cPLA2 family genes among 201 pedigrees consisting of fathers, mothers and affected offsprings
with schizophrenia. The pedigrees were collected from 2000 to 2006. Haplotype relative risk (HRR) test, transmission disequilibrium
test (TDT), haplotype transmission analysis and multiple locus analysis were conducted to analyze the genotyping data. The
genotypic frequency of cPLA2 gene did not deviate from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium either in ca...

Abstract Normal brain function requires continuous supply of oxygen and glucose in a strict manner. The close spatial and temporal
relationship between neural activity and cerebral blood flow (CBF) is termed as neurovascular coupling, which is dependent
or not dependent on astrocytes. The increase in flow evoked by brain activity is mediated by the concerted action of multiple
mediators that originate from different cells and act at different levels of the cerebral vasculature. More studies are needed
for further understanding the precise mechanisms underlying neurovascular coupling, especially the implications of astrocytes.

development of a variety of autoimmune diseases. A current study shows that the IL-6 inflammatory response of the organization
in combination with the occurrence of TGF-β can induce the differentiation of Thl7 cells. IL-23 can promote the production

mucosa of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) was examined. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry
were used to detect the expression of STAT6 and NF-κB p65 at both mRNA and protein levels in the colonic mucosa of patients
with UC and healthy volunteers. The results showed that the expression levels of STAT6 and NFκB p65 in the colonic mucosa
of patients with UC were significantly higher than in normal controls at both mRNA and protein levels. These data suggest
that STAT6 and NFκB p65 perhaps play an important role in the pathogenesis of UC and underscore the potential value of anti-UC
strategies in the clinical ma...

Abstract This paper is aimed to examine if changes in platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) expression at different stages of cervical
cancer are related to the variation in blood vessel density (BVD) and lymphatic vessel density (LVD) to evaluate the relationship
between PDGF expression and stages and metastasis of cervical cancer. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RT-PCR were used
to detect the expression levels of PDGF in 45 cervical cancer tissue samples (the experimental group). The samples were immunohistochemically
stained with monoclonal antibodies D2-40 and CD34, and BVD and LVD were measured. The expressions of PDGF-A, -B, and -D were
all higher in the experimental group than in the control group (P<0.05); no significant difference was found in the expression...

We report one case of mature cystic teratoma that presented as a tender, well-defined round mass in the right parotid gland
region. Teratomas are common neoplasms but are very rarely found in the parotid gland region, so diagnosis and treatment when
such occurs is a challenge. Magnetic resonance imaging scanning is useful in determining the nature of teratomas, and only
surgery and pathology can provide a final diagnosis. The treatment strategy is to preserve both the facial nerve and the surrounding
parotid gland tissue, while completely extirpating the teratoma.

Abstract Natriuretic peptide precursor A (NPPA) is synthesized, stored, and released by atrial myocytes. Previous studies have shown
that NPPA plays a significant role in the regulation of coronary circulation and in atherosclerosis. Rs5065 NPPA gene polymorphism
leads to the translation of NPPA with two additional arginines and has been suggested to be associated with salt-sensitive
hypertension. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the rs5065 NPPA gene polymorphism
and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in Chinese Han population. We genotyped the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)
rs5065 NPPA in the human NPPA gene in 1861 sex- and age-matched subjects, comprising of 904 CHD cases and 957 controls of

This study aimed to investigate the sensory innervation of the anterior eye segment in rats by retrograde tracing with 1,1-dioleyl-3,3,3,3-tetramethylindocarbocyanine,
4-chlorobenesulfonate (FAST Dil) injected into the anterior chamber. The sensory innervation of distinct elements of the anterior
segment of the rat’s eye, i.e. the cornea, ciliary body, iris, and trabecular meshwork, were studied by retrograde tracing
using FAST Dil as a tracer. FAST Dil was injected into the anterior chambers of the rat’s eyes. The animals were sacrificed
at different time points, i.e., 2, 3, 4, and 5 days after the injection. FAST Dil localization in trigeminal ganglions was
studied with a fluorescent microscope. Two days after FAST Dil injection into the anterior chambers, the cornea, the ciliar...

Abstract In this paper, a universal effective novel method of constructing tandem genes cluster for isoflavone engineering was reported.
A tandem genes cluster CHS-CHI-IFS (rIFS) of secondary metabolites of plant isoflavones was constructed by using the chalcone
synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), and isoflavone synthase (IFS) (GenBank accession numbers EU526827, EU526829, EU526830)
in only one recombination with the pET22b vector. The resulting expression vector pET-rIFS was heterogeneously expressed and
co-incubated with barrenwort extractions, and the genistein-like component was detected.

In this study, we constructed a recombinant
HBV vector encoding TC-tagged core protein for biarsenical labeling of HBV virion. TC tag was genetically inserted near the
immunodominant c/e1 site of HBV core protein by mutagenesis. Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis
showed that the TC-tagged core protein, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) could be expressed
in cells transfected with the recombinant HBV vector, which is similar to the cells transfected with wild-type HBV vector.
Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Southern blot analysis showed that HBV virion formation was affected
by the genetic insertion of TC tag into core protein in some degree, but cells transfected with the HBV vector coul...

at high concentrations but had no significant inhibition effect on cell growth at low concentrations. However, we observed
that lanthanum chloride repressed c-met transcription at a low concentration. This may suggest that lanthanum chloride is a potent drug to inhibit the high expression

in ovarian cancer. In this article, we systematically review the current targeted therapeutic trials running in clinic. Large,
randomized trials have been conducted in the treatment of ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer and cervical cancer by usingsmall
molecule, antisense, mutational gene as well as antibodies. Other planned or ongoing trials currently targeted at molecular
markers which may play important roles in gynecological carcinogenesis and progression suggest that combination chemotherapy
with molecular targeted therapy will ultimately be an important option.

Abstract Using a standard cellular fusion technique and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), a hybridoma cell line strain
secreting anti-HBs monoclonal antibody (mAb) (defined G6 mAb) was obtained. The cells grew and secreted mAb stably. Antibody
titers in the culture supernatant and ascites were 2.048×106 and 4.096×106, respectively. By applying the anti-HBs G6 mAb and horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled goat anti-HBs antibody, we developed
a sandwich ELISA (defined G6m ELISA) for detecting both wild-type and immune escape mutant HBsAgs (IEM HBsAg). The assay was
performed to detect 17 species of genome recombinant expression HBsAg, including two wild-type species and 15 IEM HBsAg species,
which varied in the “a” determinant, in a group of patients in...

Abstract A referral patient who had previously undergone varicose vein surgery was admitted as an emergency case. On admission, the
patient complained of intolerable pain, paralysis and paresthesia of the affected limb, which was characterized by acute arterial
ischemia symptoms. Color Doppler of the artery of the affected limb indicated that no blood flow signal existed in the superficial
femoral artery. During exploratory operation, we found that the right superficial femoral artery instead of the great saphenous
vein of the affected limb had been stripped and ligated. Therefore, the intact right great saphenous vein was taken for auto-transplantation
by inverse end-to-end anastomosis to the proximal and distal residual superficial femoral artery, which resulted in gradua...

Abstract Rab proteins and their effectors facilitate vesicular transport by tethering donor vesicles to their respective target membranes.
Rab9 mediates late endosome to trans-Golgi-network trafficking. To explore the possibility of Rab9-related gene therapy for neurodegenerative diseases, we packed
lentivirus encoding Rab9 cDNA. The expressing plasmid pCDH1-MCF1-Rab9-EF1-copGFP was constructed by using molecular biological
techniques. The lentivirus encoding Rab9 cDNA was packed by Lifectamine-2000 mediated co-transfection of the plasmid pPACKH1-GAG, pPACKH1-REV and pVSV-G into 293T cells. DNA sequencing proved the successful construction of pCDH1-MCF1-Rab9-EF1-copGFP. After 72 h,
the expression of GFP could be detected in BV-2 cells. Western blotting revealed that the Rab9...

(CTP) images simultaneously with single scan on 16 multidetector CT (MDCT). A total of 90 patients who were randomly assigned
into 3 groups were included in our study. Each group underwent CT scan by using the new protocol, traditional CTA and CTP
protocol, respectively. The image quality of CTA, the CTP parameter values and the X-ray doses were measured and compared
between the new protocol and the traditional protocols. There was no statistically significant difference in the CTA image
quality between the above methods (P = 0.55). For CTP parameters, the new protocol tended to overestimate the blood volume (BV) and blood flow (BF) value, an...

Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are small molecule metabolites of oxygen that are prone to participate in redox reactions via their high reactivity. Intracellular ROS could be generated in reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotidephosphate (NADPH)
oxidase-dependent and/or NADPH oxidase-independent manners. Physiologically, ROS are involved in many signaling cascades that
contribute to normal processes. One classical example is that ROS derived from the NADPH oxidase and released in neurotrophils
are able to digest invading bacteria. Excessive ROS, however, contribute to pathogenesis of various human diseases including
cancer, aging, dimentia and hypertension. As signaling messengers, ROS are able to oxidize many targets such as DNA, proteins
and lipids, which may be ...
