Abstract The surgical emergency treatments and curative effects of postrenal acute renal failure following obstruction due to upper
urinary calculi in infants were evaluated. Of the 13 infants with postrenal acute renal failure following obstruction due
to upper urinary calculi, 11 received retrograded catheterizations of the ureter with semi-rigid ureteroscopy (F 6.8), and
two received open ureterolithotomy. The results showed that only one infant had anuresis and continuous reduction of hemoglobin
5 h after the open ureterolithotomy and received exploration via excision and peritoneal dialysis, and the remaining 12 patients
well recovered in this group. The renal function of all the patients was restored without postoperative complications. It
is concluded that the retro...

Abstract China has been undertaking a profound reform on health care. Although more than 1.16 billion people have been covered by rural
and urban medical insurance to date, the level of reimbursement from insurance is very limited, especially for critical diseases
such as leukemia. This places heavy economic burdens on patients. Under these circumstances, systems innovation is imperative
for the efficient utilization of limited funding. In this respect, certain valuable experience from other countries may prove
helpful. The prospective payment system of Diagnosis-related Groups (DRGs), Clinical Paths, and the Comparative Effectiveness
Analysis adopted by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE, UK), can be fine tools to reduce medical
costs and impro...

This study was conducted to evaluate the global and regional left ventricular twist by 2D strain in patients
with anterior wall myocardial infarction (AMI). A total of 55 AMI patients were divided into two groups according to their
ejection fraction (EF) values (group A: LVEF ⩾ 50%; group B: LVEF < 50%), and 35 normal people served as the control group.
Using 2-dimensional strain software, global and regional LV rotation and displacement were obtained at two planes. Compared
with the control group, patients of group A showed reduced peak LV twist of the anterior and anterior-septal wall (9.26±1.89
vs 10.74±2.67; 9.71±1.71 vs 11.36±2.29, both P < 0.05), but the radial displacement and global twist were maintained (P > 0.05). Differently, regional and global LV twist and ...

Abstract We conducted a trial to assess the influence of closure or nonclosure of the peritoneum and subcutaneous tissue on the clinical
outcomes of cervical cancer patients who underwent radical hysterectomy with lower abdominal cross incision. This randomized
controlled trial was performed on 158 cervical cancer patients in our hospital between January 2002 and June 2004. Eighty-two
patients were allocated to the “closure” group and 76 patients to the “nonclosure” group. Results showed that non-closure
of the peritoneum and subcutaneous tissue could shorten operation time and febrile duration, reduce antibiotics requirement,
increase the volume of drainage and decrease the incidence of liquefaction of subcutaneous fat (P < 0.05). There was no difference in bloo...

Abstract One hundred and twenty-six patients above 80 years old with biliary diseases undergoing operations in Shaoxing People’s Hospital
from Jan. 2002 to Jan. 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients performed a preoperative stair-climbing test, and
the risks for cardiopulmonary complications were evaluated with pairmatching and linear correlations analysis between stairclimbing
height (h) and left ventricular ejective factor (EF), forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second
(FEV1). There was a significant difference in the incidence of cardiopulmonary complications among different stair-climbing heights.
Stair-climbing heights were positively related with EF, FVC and FEV1. This suggests that the stair-climbing test is an effective and...

Abstract Hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx), a 17-kd protein encoded by X gene of hepatitis B virus (HBV), has been shown to function
as a transcriptional trans-activator of a variety of viral and cellular promoter/enhancer elements. The aim of the study is
to investigate the extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERKs) pathway of HBx on glomerular mesangial cell (GMC) proliferation
and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression. The HBV X gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), inserted
into the eukaryotic expression vector pCI-neo and confirmed by restriction endonuclease digestion and sequence analysis. PCI-neo
containing HBV X gene (pCI-neo-X) was then transfected into cultured GMC line via liposome. GMC proliferation, TNF-α and its
mRNA expression w...

This study was to examine the functional significance of
XPF promoter polymorphisms and their association with lung cancer risk. The function of XPF promoter polymorphisms was tested by a set of biochemical assays, and their effects on lung cancer risk were determined by
a case-control analysis of 988 patients with lung cancer and 986 controls. The XPF — 673T allele showed a significantly higher transcriptional activity as compared with the −673C allele. The −673TT genotype
was associated with a decreased risk of lung cancer compared with the CC genotype (adjusted OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.42–0.91;
P = 0.015) and this effect was more significant among males (adjusted OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.35–0.86; P = 0.009), elder subjects (adjusted OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.30–0.86; P = 0.012), a...

This study was to investigate a better way to detect and differentiate primary, residual, recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma
(NPC) lesions post-radiotherapy in patients with NPC by means of routine computed tomography (CT) in combination with 99Tcm-sestamibi single photon emission computed tomography (99Tcm-MIBI SPECT). Forty-eight patients with histologically confirmed primary NPC underwent 99Tcm-MIBI SPECT at the 3rd month before and after radiotherapy, and at the 6th month after radiotherapy. All patients had contemporaneous
CT examinations. Histopathologic results and/or clinical follow-up data (over 18 months) were used as the golden standard
for evaluating residual/recurrent lesions. The radioactive count ratio of nasopharynx to scalp was obtained as the MIBI uptake
index (MUI). ...

This study investigated the molecular types of the Cryptococcus neoformans species complex isolates and their clinical manifestations among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive and HIV-negative
patients in southeast China in the past 15 years. The molecular types of 109 isolates from 108 patients were analyzed by the
PCR fingerprinting method, sequences of internal transcribed spacers of rDNA (ITS region), and sequences of the capsule-associated
gene (CAP59). In HIV-positive patients, clinical isolates were grouped into molecular types VNI (75%, 15/20), VNII (15%, 3/20), and VNIII
(10%, 2/20). In HIV-negative patients, the majority of the clinical isolates were grouped into molecular types VNI (72%, 64/89),
VNII (13%, 12/89), VGI (12%, 11/89), VNIII (1%, 1/89), and VGII (1%, 1/...

Abstract Stroke is a major cause of adult death and disability worldwide. Epidemiological and animal studies have provided strong evidence
that the pathogenesis of stroke is multi-factorial and induced by a combination of environmental and genetic risk factors,
but the identification of individual causative variants remains little known. Genetic influences are likely to be polygenic
with small effect sizes, and stroke itself consists of a number of different subtypes which may each have different genetic
profiles. In addition, various ethnic populations may have different stroke risk, such as Asian race. The reasons for high
risk of stroke among the Chinese, especially hemorrhagic stroke, remain unknown. Most human studies have taken a candidate

Abstract Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) cause one third of all deaths in China, and the number is anticipated to double by 2020. They
also greatly result in disability and adjusted life year loss. The prevalence of CVD has become a new burden for China, due
to an aging population, smoking, and changes in dietary habits and lifestyles. As the largest developing country, China needs
to tailor her own national policies for managing CVD with full consideration of epidemiology, local needs, and affordability.
Smoking cessation, increased physical activity, control of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, and maintenance of a “traditional
Chinese” diet should be important strategies for reducing the burden of CVD in China. Health officials in China should take

Abstract Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, one of the most important signaling pathways in eukaryotic organism,
is involved in multiple cellular events such as cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. MAPK is of great importance to
the normal function of organisms, while its dysfunction results in various diseases. So far, inhibitors specifically against
each subfamilies of MAP kinase have been developed, while more endeavors are needed to discover the compounds selectively
targeting a particular subfamily member. Most of the kinase inhibitors exert their functions in an ATP-competitive way or
a non-ATP-competitive way. Further studies on the effective mechanism of the MAPK inhibitors and their therapeutic roles in
the treatment of diseases are...

Abstract Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, carries significant mortality and morbidity.
The most important and effective way to reduce VTE incidence is to identify the patients at risk and give necessary prevention.
VTE is a multifactorial and complicated disorder. Major risk factors for VTE include surgery and trauma, acute medical illness,
active cancer and pregnancy. Genetic factors increase susceptibility to the disease and are useful in predicting the development
of VTE. Gene-gene and gene-environment interactions alter and magnify the clinical picture in this disorder. This brief review
summarizes some selected clinical and genetic risk factors for VTE based on the current research in China.

This study aims to investigate the genetic association between
the polymorphism of cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) family genes and schizophrenia among Han Chinese in the northern part
of China. The polymerase chain reaction-based ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR) was applied to detect the genotype ten single
nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of cPLA2 family genes among 201 pedigrees consisting of fathers, mothers and affected offsprings
with schizophrenia. The pedigrees were collected from 2000 to 2006. Haplotype relative risk (HRR) test, transmission disequilibrium
test (TDT), haplotype transmission analysis and multiple locus analysis were conducted to analyze the genotyping data. The
genotypic frequency of cPLA2 gene did not deviate from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium either in ca...

Abstract Normal brain function requires continuous supply of oxygen and glucose in a strict manner. The close spatial and temporal
relationship between neural activity and cerebral blood flow (CBF) is termed as neurovascular coupling, which is dependent
or not dependent on astrocytes. The increase in flow evoked by brain activity is mediated by the concerted action of multiple
mediators that originate from different cells and act at different levels of the cerebral vasculature. More studies are needed
for further understanding the precise mechanisms underlying neurovascular coupling, especially the implications of astrocytes.

This study was designed to examine
the association between 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the adducin 1 alpha (ADD1) and guanine nucleotide binding
protein (G protein) beta polypeptide 3 (GNB3) genes and systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), and mean arterial pressure
(MAP) responses to potassium-supplementation. We conducted a 7-day high-sodium intervention (307.8 mmol sodium/day) followed
by a 7-day high-sodium with potassium-supplementation (60 mmol potassium/day) among 1906 Han Chinese participants from rural
north China. BP measurements were obtained at the end of each intervention period using a random-zero sphygmomanometer. We
identified significant associations between ADD1 variant rs17833172 and SBP, DBP, and MAP responses to potassium-supplementation

This study aimed to identify functional single nucleotide polymorphisms in the cyclooxygenase-2 gene promoter and evaluate
their effects on the risk of primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. We conducted a
population-based, case-control study enrolling 630 Han Chinese people in Hubei province. Subjects included primary HCC patients
with HBV infection (n = 210), chronic hepatitis B cases (n = 210) and healthy Han Chinese (n = 210). −1195G/A polymorphism was analyzed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP)
and sequencing analysis. We found -1195A allele carriers had a higher risk of HCC with HBVinfection (OR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.548–0.946).

Abstract Severe sepsis and septic shock affect millions of patients and are major causes of mortality worldwide. Advancements in treatment
and disease management led to a decline in in-hospital mortality from 27.8% (1979–1984) to 17.9% (1995 to 2000). In this article,
we systemically review recent guidelines for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock published in 2008 by the International
Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines Committee. The 2008 Surviving Sepsis guidelines recommend protocolized resuscitation
with goals to maintain central venous pressure ⩾ 8–12 mmHg, mean arterial pressure ⩾ 65 mmHg, urine output ⩾ 0.5 mL·kg−1·h−1 and central venous oxygen saturation ⩾ 70% (or mixed venous ⩾ 65%). Further fluid administration, transfusion of pac...

that are similar to human plaque rupture. Potential mechanisms involved in plaque vulnerability were studied from the inflammation-immunity,
proliferation-apoptosis, oxidative stress and biomechanics aspects. Imaging markers and biomarkers were used to detect vulnerable

Abstract The aim of this paper was to observe the clinical effect of gentamycin combined with sodium bicarbonate for the prevention
of irinotecan-induced diarrhea. A total of 98 patients with stage IV cancers were recruited and divided into a prevention
group (52 patients) and a control group (46 patients). All patients received the chemotherapy including irinotecan. The prevention
group received gentamycin and sodium bicarbonate before the use of irinotecan for 4 days; the control group did not receive
any prevention. The use of gentamycin and sodium bicarbonate resulted in significantly higher stool pH (P<0.001), while the incidence of diarrhea by irinotecan was reduced (prevention group 13.70% versus control group 34.83%; P<0.001). Gentamycin combined with sodium bi...

mucosa of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) was examined. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry
were used to detect the expression of STAT6 and NF-κB p65 at both mRNA and protein levels in the colonic mucosa of patients
with UC and healthy volunteers. The results showed that the expression levels of STAT6 and NFκB p65 in the colonic mucosa
of patients with UC were significantly higher than in normal controls at both mRNA and protein levels. These data suggest
that STAT6 and NFκB p65 perhaps play an important role in the pathogenesis of UC and underscore the potential value of anti-UC
strategies in the clinical ma...

Abstract This paper is aimed to examine if changes in platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) expression at different stages of cervical
cancer are related to the variation in blood vessel density (BVD) and lymphatic vessel density (LVD) to evaluate the relationship
between PDGF expression and stages and metastasis of cervical cancer. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RT-PCR were used
to detect the expression levels of PDGF in 45 cervical cancer tissue samples (the experimental group). The samples were immunohistochemically
stained with monoclonal antibodies D2-40 and CD34, and BVD and LVD were measured. The expressions of PDGF-A, -B, and -D were
all higher in the experimental group than in the control group (P<0.05); no significant difference was found in the expression...

We report one case of mature cystic teratoma that presented as a tender, well-defined round mass in the right parotid gland
region. Teratomas are common neoplasms but are very rarely found in the parotid gland region, so diagnosis and treatment when
such occurs is a challenge. Magnetic resonance imaging scanning is useful in determining the nature of teratomas, and only
surgery and pathology can provide a final diagnosis. The treatment strategy is to preserve both the facial nerve and the surrounding
parotid gland tissue, while completely extirpating the teratoma.

of the cell number in different phases of the cell cycle was analyzed by flow cytometry. The growth curves showed that the
growth rate was notably decreased, and cell double time was elongated in PRAK
−/− cells; moreover, the number of PRAK
−/− cells was decreased by 44.5% compared with that of PRAK
+/+ cells cultured for 96 h, suggesting that G2/M transition is inhibited in PRAK

Abstract Natriuretic peptide precursor A (NPPA) is synthesized, stored, and released by atrial myocytes. Previous studies have shown
that NPPA plays a significant role in the regulation of coronary circulation and in atherosclerosis. Rs5065 NPPA gene polymorphism
leads to the translation of NPPA with two additional arginines and has been suggested to be associated with salt-sensitive
hypertension. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the rs5065 NPPA gene polymorphism
and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in Chinese Han population. We genotyped the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)
rs5065 NPPA in the human NPPA gene in 1861 sex- and age-matched subjects, comprising of 904 CHD cases and 957 controls of
Chinese Han population....

This article presents a case of renal AML occurring in a 14-year-old girl with a definite diagnosis of TSC. She had been diagnosed
with TSC at the age of three, and a schedule for close observation was disobeyed. At this time, she underwent a series of
examinations: physical examination, ultrasonography, angiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) scans. The physical examination showed adenoma sebaceum in a butterfly paranasal distribution, and a mass was palpated
in the left upper quadrant. There were no neurological deficits. Imaging studies (including ultrasonography, angiography,
CT, and MRI) of the abdomen showed a large heterogeneous mass arising from the left kidney. Partial nephrectomy was performed.
The pathological diagnosis was hemorrhagic r...

Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA levels during the course and
the progression to cirrhosis with chronic hepatitis B. A total of 239 chronic hepatitis B patients confirmed by liver biopsy
between 2001 and 2007 were followed up for a median of 28 months. Compared with the patients without cirrhosis, the patients
progressed to cirrhosis were older and with higher HBV-DNA levels at end point. However, there was no significant difference
in cirrhosis progression between different HBV-DNA groups at baseline (P = 0.531). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed higher HBV-DNA level at endpoint had increasing risk of cirrhosis (P = 0.019). The results of Cox model indicated that HBV-DNA levels at endpoint, stage of fibrosis, n...

Abstract The eukaryotic expression vector of human arresten gene was constructed and its secretive expression human embryonic kidney
(HEK 293) cells was detected. Human arresten gene was amplified from recombinant plasmid pGEM-Arr by polymerase chain reaction
(PCR), and then digested with restriction endonucleases BamH I and EcoR I. The target fragment was inserted into the BamH I and EcoR I restriction sites of eukaryotic expression vector pSecTag2 to construct pST-AT. Restriction analysis and DNA sequencing
indicated that the arresten gene was successfully inserted into pSecTag2. The recombinant plasmid was subsequently transfected
into HEK 293 cells with LipofectAMINETM2000 Reagent, and the expression of the target gene was detected. RTPCR revealed that

Abstract In this paper, a universal effective novel method of constructing tandem genes cluster for isoflavone engineering was reported.
A tandem genes cluster CHS-CHI-IFS (rIFS) of secondary metabolites of plant isoflavones was constructed by using the chalcone
synthase (CHS), chalcone isomerase (CHI), and isoflavone synthase (IFS) (GenBank accession numbers EU526827, EU526829, EU526830)
in only one recombination with the pET22b vector. The resulting expression vector pET-rIFS was heterogeneously expressed and
co-incubated with barrenwort extractions, and the genistein-like component was detected.

In this study, we constructed a recombinant
HBV vector encoding TC-tagged core protein for biarsenical labeling of HBV virion. TC tag was genetically inserted near the
immunodominant c/e1 site of HBV core protein by mutagenesis. Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis
showed that the TC-tagged core protein, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) could be expressed
in cells transfected with the recombinant HBV vector, which is similar to the cells transfected with wild-type HBV vector.
Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Southern blot analysis showed that HBV virion formation was affected
by the genetic insertion of TC tag into core protein in some degree, but cells transfected with the HBV vector coul...

explore the potential therapeutic value of lanthanum chloride, cytotoxicity test was applied to investigate its effects on
cell proliferation. Furthermore, we observed its influence on pro-oncogene c-met by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In MCF-7 cell line, lanthanum chloride repressed cell proliferation
at high concentrations but had no significant inhibition effect on cell growth at low concentrations. However, we observed
that lanthanum chloride repressed c-met transcription at a low concentration. This may suggest that lanthanum chloride is a potent drug to inhibit the high expression
of c-met in carcinoma cells an...

Abstract More and more molecular drugs based on targeted therapy have been utilized in the treatment of gynecologic cancer, especially
in ovarian cancer. In this article, we systematically review the current targeted therapeutic trials running in clinic. Large,
randomized trials have been conducted in the treatment of ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer and cervical cancer by usingsmall
molecule, antisense, mutational gene as well as antibodies. Other planned or ongoing trials currently targeted at molecular
markers which may play important roles in gynecological carcinogenesis and progression suggest that combination chemotherapy
with molecular targeted therapy will ultimately be an important option.

Abstract Lung cancer is one of the most common human cancers and the number one cancer killer in the United States. In general, lung
cancer includes small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but NSCLC accounts for approximately
90% of lung cancer. The early diagnosis and therapy of lung cancer still presents a big challenge because validated screening
tools, which can improve current early detection to reduce mortality from lung cancer, do not exist. Over the last decade,
molecular genetic abnormalities have been described in NSCLC, including chromosomal aberrations, overexpression of oncogenes,
and deletion and/or mutations in tumor suppressor genes. These molecular markers in NSCLC demonstrated close associations
with the development of lung c...

Abstract Proteinase-activated receptors (PARs) are a novel subclass of seven transmembrane-spanning, G protein-coupled receptors. PAR-1
and PAR-2 are widely expressed in a variety of cells and are found to be involved in many physiological and pathological processes
including inflammation and immune response. However, little is known about the function of PAR-1, 2 in acute graft vs host
disease (GVHD). In the present study, we first detected the expression of PAR-1, 2 protein and mRNA in a murine model of acute
GVHD using the methods of immunohistochemistry, Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Syngeneic
hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) mice served as controls. The relative gene expression level of PAR-1 was significantly

This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of nicotine on dopaminergic neurons and its mechanisms in mice with
Parkinson disease (PD) induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). C57BL/6J mice were injected with MPTP
for 8 days to establish a PD model. Nicotine was given for 10 days in the nicotine therapeutic group. Animals were examined
behaviorally with the pole test and traction test. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were determined
by using the immunocytochemistry (ICC) method. The ultrastructural changes of the caudate nucleus (CN) were observed under
electron microscopy. The results showed that pretreatment with nicotine could improve the dyskinesia of PD mice markedly.

Abstract To clarify the effect of DNA methylation and histone deacetylase inhibitors on the expression of the E-cadherin gene and the
invasiveness of the QBC939 cells, the QBC939 cells were separately treated with hydralazine, valproate, or combination of the two drugs. The expression of E-cadherin
mRNA and protein was examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and Western blot. The methylation
status of the promoter region of the gene was detected by methylation-specific PCR (MSP). The invasiveness of QBC939 cells was tested by transwell assay. It was found that the promoter region of the E-cadherin gene of QBC939 cells was hypermethylated. Valproate alone could not contribute to demethylation of the gene, whereas hydralazine could make
them to be ...

In this study, 100 women who were enrolled were randomly divided into two groups. In one group, the TCT for cervical
cells was applied (TCT group), and in the other group routine cervical smear was used. In addition, the cells in the TCT group
were screened by double sifters, and centrifuged using a separation medium so as to eliminate mucus, inflammatory cells and
blood cells. According to the cell distribution and the thickness of the smear, the results were assigned to three groups,
including satisfactory smears, less satisfactory smears and unsatisfactory smears. The TCT had a higher satisfactory rate
(98%) compared to the routine cervical smear (32%) (P<0.01), indicating the TCT was superior to the routine cervical smear. It is concluded that the TCT is more acceptable. Meanwh...

Abstract The regulatory effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) mediated by recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) in vitro was investigated. Recombinant plasmid pAAV-S3-bFGF, and pSVneo were co-transfected into BHK-21 cells, then the recombinant
AAV genome was replicated and packaged with the helper virus HSV1-rc/ΔUL2. The titer of the recombinant rAAV2-tet-off-bFGF
was determined by dot-blot assay. MC3T3-E1 cells were infected with rAAV2-tet-off-bFGF. Regulatory effects of Doxycycline
(Dox) on bFGF and osteogenic factors were assayed quantitatively by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction
(RT-PCR) and Western blot. The physical particle titer of rAAV2-tet-off-bFGF successfully constructed was 1.8×1012 vector genomes/mL, and the virus could i...

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of resistin on insulin signaling in human umbilical vein endothelial
cells (HUVECs). HUVECs were incubated with recombinant human resistin (0–100 ng/mL) for 24 h. Akt and endothelial nitric oxide
synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation levels of endothelial cells under basal or insulin stimulated conditions were measured by
Western blot. Nitric oxide (NO) production of HUVECs was also detected. The results showed that resistin could significantly
inhibit Akt and eNOS phosphorylation and NO production in endothelial cells under insulin stimulated conditions (P < 0.05 vs control). But under basal conditions, treatment with resistin could result in a decrease in eNOS phosphorylation (P < 0.05 vs control) but had no effect on NO pr...

In conclusion, single ovarian stimulation may produce more oocytes/embryos. However, repeated gonadotropin stimulation
may have a negative effect on the ovarian follicular quality, the number of mature retrieved oocytes, and the embryo quality,
even increasing the chance of ovarian cancer.

Abstract Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are small molecule metabolites of oxygen that are prone to participate in redox reactions via their high reactivity. Intracellular ROS could be generated in reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotidephosphate (NADPH)
oxidase-dependent and/or NADPH oxidase-independent manners. Physiologically, ROS are involved in many signaling cascades that
contribute to normal processes. One classical example is that ROS derived from the NADPH oxidase and released in neurotrophils
are able to digest invading bacteria. Excessive ROS, however, contribute to pathogenesis of various human diseases including
cancer, aging, dimentia and hypertension. As signaling messengers, ROS are able to oxidize many targets such as DNA, proteins
and lipids, which may be ...

functions, including the aging process. Bushenkangshuai Tang (补肾抗衰方, BT) is a traditional Chinese medicine widely used for clinically treating premature ovarian failure. In the present study, BT administration at high concentrations significantly increased lifespan, slowed aging-related decline, and delayed accumulation
of aging-related cellular damage in wild-type Caenorhabditis elegans. BT administration could further largely alleviate the aging defects induced by UV and oxidative stresses, and BT administration at different concentrations could largely rescue the aging defects in mev-1 mutant animals.
In this study, 4-1BBL was expressed in non-immune cells and non-tumor cells, and the role of
4-1BBL in lymphocyte activation and tumor suppression was investigated. The plasmid p4-1BBL containing the full length of
mouse 4-1BBL cDNA sequence was constructed, and the plasmid was transfected into baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells and murine
muscle cells by means of lipofectin-mediated or naked plasmid DNA injection into the muscle directly. The study demonstrated
that the molecule 4-1BBL expressed by BHK cells in vitro could enhance the proliferation and cytotoxicity of lymphocytes, and it could increase the expression level of IL-2 and IFN-γ.
The treatment with plasmid p4-1BBL in vivo revealed that the number of CD8+ Tcells in the peri-tumoral tissue increased markedly, and the growth r...

This study aims to research the expression of spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the relationship
between Syk and clinicopathologic factors and p53. Immunohistochemistry was applied to detect the expression of Syk and p53
protein in 39 cases of NSCLC (23 cases of lung squamous cell cancer, 16 cases of lung adenocarcinoma) and tumor-surrounding
normal lung tissues. The positive rate of Syk was 46.15% (18/39) and 100% (39/39) in NSCLC and tumorsurrounding normal lung
tissues, respectively. The expression level of Syk in NSCLC was significantly lower than that in tumor-surrounding normal
lung tissues (P = 0.000). The Syk expression was positively correlated with the p53 expression in NSCLC specimens (P = 0.025). There was no significant association bet...

Abstract Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is the predominant serine/threonine phosphatase in eukaryotic cells. In the brains of patients
with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), decreased PP2A activities were observed, which is suggested to be involved in neuro.brillary
tangle (NFT) formation, disturbed amyloid precursor protein (APP) secretion and neurodegeneration in AD brain. Based on our
research and other previous findings, decreased PP2Ac level, decreased PP2A holoenzyme composition, increased level of PP2A
inhibitors, increased PP2Ac Leu309 demethylation and Tyr307 phosphorylation underlie PP2A inactivation in AD. β-amyloid (Aβ)
overproduction, estrogen deficiency and impaired homocysteine metabolism are the possible up-stream factors that inactivate
PP2A in AD neurons. Furt...

This study aims to investigate the influence of β-elemene on the secretion of angiotensin II (ANG II) and the expression of
angiotensin receptor type 1 (AT1R) in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). In vitro, HSC-T6 were cultured for 24 hours and then treated with different doses of β-elemene (2.5, 5 and 10 mg/L). A control group
was also set up. The secretion of ANG II in the supernatant was detected by radioimmunoassay. The mRNA expression of AT1R
at 4, 12 and 24 h after treatment was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respectively.
The protein expression of AT1R was detected by western blot. At the 4th h, the ANG II secretion in the supernatant was significantly
inhibited by 10 mg/L β-elemene compared with the control group (P<0.05), while 5.0 mg/...

Abstract Lymphography is often used for the diagnosis of lymphatic metastasis in oncology. Determination of lymphatic metastasis is
extremely important for accurate cancer staging, which may directly guide the clinical therapeutic scheme. In recent years,
the technology of lymphography has developed rapidly on the basis of traditional lymphography, with the appearance of computed
tomography (CT) lymphography, nuclear magnetic resonance (MR) lymphography, contrast-enhanced lymphosonography, and so on;
the diagnostic accuracy has also been improved. The imaging principles and methods of these various technologies of lymphography
are reviewed in this paper, and their applications and significance in oncology are also discussed in detail.

Abstract Leptin resistance is a main mechanism of acquired childhood obesity, and the suppression of long form of leptin receptor (OBRb)
gene expression in dietinduced obese rats indicates that the down-regulation of OBRb gene expression plays a pivotal role
in the mechanism of leptin resistance. The aim of the present study was to construct the lentiviral RNA interference (RNAi)
vector of rat OBRb gene and evaluate the effects of siRNA on silencing OBRb gene expression. The target sequence of siRNA-OBRb
was designed, and the complementary DNA containing both sense and antisense oligonucleotides was synthesized. After phosphorylation
and annealing, these double-stranded DNA was cloned to pRNA-lentivector-VGFP to construct pRNA-Lenti-OBRb-VGFP recombinants

understanding of the potential developmental neurotoxicity of pesticides. Techniques for assessing developmental neurotoxicity
of pesticides will continue to be developed, rendering a need for flexibility of testing paradigms. Current techniques used
in evaluating the developmental neurotoxicity of OPs and PRY are presented in this review. These include: (1) In vitro techniques (PC12 cells, C6...

a new hypothesis about the causes of autism spectrum disorders (ASD): autistic mirror neuron dysfunction hypothesis. ASD subjects
show obvious lack of the activation of the mirror system during the task of observation or emotional cognition. It is significant
to investigate the mirror system for revealing the causes of autism and it is also helpful for developing new ways to diagnose

Abstract It has been found that lifestyle and diet are associated with the development of cancers. The mortality of breast cancer in
Wuhan city is increasing, according to the statistics of recent years. This case control study was aimed to provide data for
alimentary therapeutics for breast carcinomas. It included a case group (n = 196) and an age frequency-matched control group (n = 202). A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to obtain information on usual food consumption. The results indicate
that intake of soy foods more than 5 times per week was associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer, especially in premenopausal
women. The adjusted OR was 0.294 [95% CI was (0.158−0.546), P = 50.000]. Our results indicate that alimentary therapeutics for breast ...

This article is to explore if rTMS can cause changes of such chemical substances as N-acetylaspartate
(NAA), choline (Cho) and creatine (Cr) in the surrounding area of experimental intracerebral hematoma of rabbits. A total
of 36 rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups: a control group (group A), a sham rTMS group (group B) and an rTMS group
(group C). The experimental intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) was induced by intracerebral injection of selfbody blood of the
animals in groups B and C, while those of the group A serving as controls were injected with normal saline. The rabbits of
groups B and C were treated with sham and real rTMS, respectively, but those of group A were not. The contents of chemical
substances including NAA, Cho and Cr in the perihematomal brain tissues were ...

Abstract Substernal goiter is considered to be a diagnostic differential for all anterosuperior mediastinal masses. For a substernal
goiter, surgical removal is suggested when it is large in size, with a possibility for malignancy or has local compression
of adjacent structures. This can be performed through the neck or by the addition of a partial or complete sternotomy if necessary.
A 58-year-old Chinese man from Guangdong Province had had dry cough for a year. A subsequent CT scan in our hospital suggested
“ectopic intrathoracic thyroid”. Fine needle percutaneous mass biopsy also suggested “ectopic intrathoracic thyroid”. We performed
a standard median sternotomy to remove the mass. It measured 13 cm × 8 cm × 6 cm in size, and weighed 2.8 kg. The pathological

Abstract Hypertension is characterized by vascular smooth muscle constriction and vascular remodeling involving cell migration, hypertrophy
and growth. Crk-associated substrate (CAS), the first discovered member of the adapter protein CAS family, has been shown
to be a critical cellular component that regulates various smooth muscle functions. In this review, the molecular structure
and protein interactions of the CAS family members are summarized. Evidence for the role of CAS in the regulation of vascular
smooth muscle contractility is presented. Contraction stimulation induces CAS phosphorylation on Tyr-410 in arterial smooth
muscle, creating the binding site for the Src homology (SH) 2/SH3 protein CrkII, which activates neuronal Wiskott-Aldrich
syndrome protein (N-WASP)...

This study was designed to clarify the cellular characteristics in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF)
and body weight loss of rats exposed to oxygen(> 90%). Young male Wistar rats, aged 6 weeks, were divided into three groups:
(1) room air group (exposed to room air, n = 22); (2) hyperoxia < 48 h group (exposed to over 90% oxygen for less than 48 h, n = 18); (3) hyperoxia 66–72 h group (exposed to over 90% oxygen for 66–72 h group, n = 7). Compared to the room air group, the total cell counts in the hyperoxia 66–72 h group decreased, whereas the neutrophils
increased significantly. The body weights of the rats exposed to room air continued to increase. However, the body weights
of oxygen-exposed rats increased slightly on the first day and weight loss was seen from the sec...

Abstract Single-tube bi-directional allele specific amplification (SB-ASA) and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RQ-PCR)
assays were developed and performed for JAK2V617F detection on 40 polycythemia vera (PV) samples, 31 essential thrombocythemia
(ET) samples, 40 acute leukemia samples, and 40 healthy control samples. Differences between detect limitations of the two
assays and their influence on the mutation detection rate were analyzed. The results showed that in some samples, the JAK2V617F
burden was as low as nearly 1%, and thus more JAK2V617F-positive samples were detected by RQ-PCR than by SB-ASA assay due
to the former higher detect limitation. Mutation allele ratios in PV and ET samples and their relevance to biological characteristics
were also an...

Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate a method which may decrease the incidence and severity of oculocardiac reflex (OCR)
without drugs. One hundred and sixty children undergoing strabismus surgery were allocated to two groups using double-blind
randomization. OCR was defined as a decrease of more than 10% from the baseline heart rate during operation. An alarm sounded
and a lamp flashed as soon as OCR occurred in group I, and neither of the above happened in group II. OCR occurred (1.151
± 0.858) times in group I and (2.287 ± 1.371) times in group II (P < 0.05). Heart rate decreased by (23 ± 19) bpm in group I and (35 ± 28) bpm in group II (P < 0.05). The duration of OCR in group I and group II was (4.36 ± 4.26)s and (7.62 ± 6.41)s, respectively (P &l...

Abstract The aim of this paper is to report a new coding variance of the TNFRSF9 gene, a candidate for auto-immune diseases. We found the variation in two families with type 2 diabetes mellitus by D-HPLC
mutation screening method and confirmed our results by direct sequencing and PCR-RFLP. Although without changing the amino
acid coding, the variance may have an effect on codon usage and play a role in disease development, such as type 2 diabetes
mellitus. However, we cannot define the role of this variance because the frequency of the minor allele is low in the Chinese
population and no homozygote of the variance was found. More research in multiple populations will be necessary to define
the role of this variance.

Abstract Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) is characterized by marked urinary excretion of albumin and other intermediate-sized plasma
proteins, such as transferrin and vitamin D-binding protein. Some cases even develop anemia. The aim of this study was to
investigate the changes in serum iron, transferrin, and erythropoietin, and the relationships between serum and urine transferrin
and erythropoietin. Thirty-seven children with INS and 35 age-and sex-matched healthy children were investigated. The indexes
related to iron metabolism, including serum iron, ferritin, transferrin, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation,

Abstract Domestic application of infrared patch clamp techniques on brain slices is limited. The key of the technique is to prepare
high-quality brain slices. The present paper describes the preparation procedure of brainstem slices and the spontaneous firing
properties of rat medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurons. By infrared differential interference contrast technique, neurons
of rat MVN were visualized directly at the depth of 50–100 μm underneath the surface of slices. Firing activities of MVN neurons
were recorded by the whole-cell patch clamp technique in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF) and low Ca2+-high Mg2+ fluid. The firing mode was more irregular and depressive in low Ca2+-high Mg2+ fluid than in ACSF. According to the averaged waveform of action potent...

beneficial to endotoxic, infectious/spetic and hemorrhagic shock. Our previous studies found that Rho kinase played an important
role in the occurrence of calcium desensitization following shock. It was reported that AVP was with stimulation effect of
Rho kinase. So we hypothesized that AVP might have beneficial effect on shock via activation of Rho kinase to regulate the
calcium sensitivity and vascular reactivity. Hemorrhagic shock (40 mmHg for 2 h) Wistar rats in vivo were adopted to observe the effects of small dose of AVP on hemodynamics, 24-h survival rate, the pressor effect of norepinephrine

In this study,
four commonly used housekeeping genes, Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), β-actin, 28S rRNA and 18S rRNA were
selected to test whether this assumption is tenable under hypoxic conditions. We tested the RNA expression level of these
four genes in different hypoxic conditions. Rats subjected to acute hypoxia for 2 hours were used for tissue detection. Primary
cultured neural stem cells from E13 fetal rats were treated with 3% O2 or 10% O2 for 24 hours for in vitro experiments. In both experiments, expression levels of 28S rRNA and 18S rRNA were constant, independent of hypoxia types.
However, expression levels of GAPDH and β-actin were all changed in all kinds of hypoxic conditions. In particular, the mRNA
expression level of GAPDH was increased by 43.4%...

in the recent five years due to the special position, function and mechanical property of heart valves. It is one of the key
factors to select an ideal scaffold material in the construction of TEHV. And this article will briefly review the current
research and progress on the scaffolds of TEHV, especially based on Chinese works.

Abstract Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway has been identified as a key cellular pathway in embryogenesis and disease, including cancers.
In recent years, more and more interacting components have been observed and their exact functions approached, thus ensuring
the most complicated understanding of this pathway in normal organism development and disorders. In hepatocellular carcinoma
(HCC), with a deeply understanding of this pathway, more and more genes which contribute to aberrant activation of Wnt/β-catenin
signaling pathway has recently been identified and their exact roles in HCC pursued. In this review, we will focus on a mostly
updated understanding of this pathway and its observed role in HCC by emphasizing the gene defects identified to promote tumorigenesis

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents an extremely poor prognostic cancer, which is mainly due to the high frequency of
metastasis/recurrence after surgical operation. Exploring the molecular mechanisms involved in HCC metastasis could be helpful
in the prediction and early diagnosis of HCC recurrence and could also provide new therapeutic targets for HCC metastasis.
In the recent decade, we analyzed the genomic aberrations of the clinical specimens, as well as the metastatic models and
cell lines of human HCC to identify the genetic markers related to HCC metastasis and to verify their clinical values in the
prediction and control of metastasis of HCC. Using the comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) technique, we compared the
differences of chromosomal aber...

Effect of IL-10 on formation of foam cell induced by ox-LDL

This study demonstrates that ox-LDL can cause foam cell
formation from macrophages in vitro. LPS can significantly accelerate this event. IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine, can inhibit the effect of ox-LDL and
LPS. These results indicate that inflammatory effects in blood vessels can speed up foam cell formation. The inhibitive effect
of IL-10 is an important factor for delaying atherosclerosis processes.

Treatment of gingival hyperplasia induced by cyclosporine A

Abstract The clinical therapy for cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced gingival hyperplasia (GH) and the pathological changes in hyperplastic
gingival tissues were investigated. Nine cases of CsA-induced GH after renal transplantation were subjected to periodontal
non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment and were followed up. Gingival index (GI), dental plaque index (PLI) and GH
degree (GHD) at different time points were measured. Under light and electron microscopy, the pathological changes in hyperplastic
gingival tissues were observed. The CsA concentrations in gingival tissues and blood were determined by using fluorescence
polarization immunoassay with TDxFLx monoclonal antibody. The results showed that GI, PLI and GHD in patients with GH declined after periodontal treatm...
