The OpenEMR project has released version 4.1.0. This version is 100% ONC-ATB Ambulatory EHR certified for 2011-2012 when used with a certified e-prescription solution. Kudos to the SourceForge project admin Rod Roark and Tony McCormick the project manager. The effort was accomplished by a consortium of small development companies with included SunsetSystems, MI-Squared, Visolve, Z&H Healthcare, Garden State Health Systems, and Ensoftek. There were a large number of individual contributors and there is at least a partial list on the copyright information page at http://www.oemr.org/wiki/OpenEMR_Copyright_Notice . appeared on the website 2011/08/19. Congratulations to all involved! OpenEMR 4.1 should be ready for download in a few weeks.

This accomplishment is an amazing feat for an open source project, requiring many, many hours of interpretation of standards, coding, bug fixes, testing, and not least of all many thousands of dollars in fundraising to certify a product which has no corporate ownership and no financial return on that investment.

It is LAMP based software that is free to use and inexpensive to run; hardware requirements are minimal. If you ha...

As a lot of people have realized, OpenEMR's interface looks like something that came out of a 60's time capsule. A company, EHR Live, has updated the interface to provide a more visually appealing interface that makes OpenEMR marketable in today's marketplace.

This new interface could change the immediate perception of the program and bring OpenEMR into the same arena as other big time proprietary software vendors with nicely done interfaces. The feature set of OpenEMR has been always fair, but you can't sell a diamond if it looks like a piece of coal. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce the release of the Christmas Edition of
FreeDiams 0.5.2.

Announcement in English
Announcement in French

Lots of improvements where done on the interaction engine (update to
AFSSAPS 17/12/2010, cytochrome P450, Glycoprotein-P interactions
added, lots of corrections in the drugs database).

The bibliography related to interactions are available for some
(mainly all CYT450 and GPG interactions). We still need to work on
this feature.

A really awaited improvement is the management of plural forms in the
protocol (FreeDiams will replace the '(s)' to the right plural form).

Merry Christmas to you all ;)

Starting with originally just 120 projects, the medfloss.org database currently holds:

In the FOSS world there is choice. There are desktop oriented applications and web based applications. There is however no EMR application which offers both - at the same time. This is because the desktop and the web a fundamentally different - only the user stays the same. GNUmed is attempting to offer what has not been offered before. A desktop app like it has for many years and a web based application - all sharing a common code base without any compromises in terms of security.
Ubuntu Netbook Remix (reviewed version 10.4) is Linux like you've never seen before. It has a smooth, attractive, interface that works very well with the netbook form factor. It is a clear winner, as good as if not better than operating systems from enormous corporations. There was a gotcha on my HP Mini installation in an otherwise great work.
Dear friends,

I am pleased to announce the immediate availability of
GNUmed 0.7.0 (server v13).

    http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/server/v13/

The database, as usual, needs to be upgraded to v13. The previous v12 version will remain untouched so in case of problems one can just go back until fixed. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

The Open ISES Project (http://openises.sourceforge.net) is very proud to announce its latest offering. "Call and Pump" is a web-based training program for the general population (http://emstraining.eduforge.org/medical/public_trng.html) and is the first offering in the Open ISES Project's public training section. As the focus of citizen CPR turns more towards compression only CPR, this training program can help meet that need. This training project comes from our friends with the Call and Pump project (http://www.callandpump.org) in Wisconsin. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

Are you a practice, clinic or any other health care institution that is using medical open source software in daily routine? And wasn't it quite hard for you to find the right software, to get it up and running and to finally customize it to your needs without having any experienced users or reference sites at hand?

Even a high number of downloads or a strong 'activity percentile' of an open source software project doesn't tell you anything about the suitability for your purposes and in general about the stability and efficiency that are required for successful clinical practice.

But what if you could see on a per-project basis at which site it is already deployed and even whom you could contact and ask for advice and personal experiences? (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Softw...

In developed countries, healthcare workers represent a significant proportion of the working population. For example, in the United Kingdom, more than 1 million people work for the National Health Service, a publicly funded healthcare system. Medical software therefore has a huge market to tap. Whatever stage of a country's economic development, health care is one of the most important elements in society. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

A surprise hit at this year's SCALE expo in Los Angeles was a presentation by a Dentist from Scotland who had come to DOCHS last year to learn more about open source software for healthcare. After becoming dissatisfied by his proprietary practice management software, he decided to create his own open source solution - and become his own, one-man open source project! The result was Open Molar: http://openmolar.wikidot.com/start
- And it all started at the DOCHS conference. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

I don't have the expertise to fully comprehend these NPRMs that were recently issued, but did spend the last few hours reading large chunks of all three. The area they cover is huge, and I fear open source and small EHRs are about to lose big, and big corporate EHRs are about to get total lock-in courtesy of our government.

The bills cover a lot of territory, proposing many requirements that I do not think support "meaningful use" requirements. There are numerous interesting items, one surprising to me was that the ONC expects a Certified EHR will cost $163 million over 3 years to develop, excluding costs for testing and certification. The majority of the NPRM is framed with that mindset.

The ONC-HIT proposes a single certification body (who could've guessed) and expects only 3 vendors t...

It all originated from the need to host GNUmed Live CDs, VMware images and so on. Nothing comes for free and there was no way we could host these images on the GNUmed servers. That is why we started the GNUmed Live project on sourceforge.

This gives us the room we need to offer GNUmed in a form that allows users to try GNUmed without going through the whole installation process.

Head over to sourceforge.net to see for yourself and grab a CD image. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

Industry Meeting on Upgrading VistA/CPRS

Recently there was a meeting with Tech companies to discuss upgrading the VistA/CPRS system. The implications of their conclusions are very high stakes for those advocating for VistA as the basic seed for continued open source EHR development.

http://www.nextgov.com/nextgov/ng_20091014_6336.php

A few rays of hope seem to have emerged including discussions on:
1. Updating VistA for public and private sector use
2. What are possible deployment models for VistA to the wider public?
3. Is VistA suitable as a national standard?
4. What are appropriate strategies for modernizing VistA? etc.

Very important questions, indeed. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

Fred Trotter writes: "For VA VistA we have a conundrum, the originator of the code, the US government, has left the code basically licenseless. I believe this means that the choice if preferred license should be up to the most substantial third-party developers. I believe that the most substantial way to make VistA better is to make contributions that make further development easier. MUMPS is a great language but it makes VA VistA inaccessible to most programmers. Given that I believe the most significant third-party contributions to VA VistA are (in no particular order):

Note: Nashville, TN is home to some 150+ healthcare companies (many of which can trace their roots back to HCA. This is the FIRST broad open source integration event in this area (there was a Red Hat Summit in recent years). You'll note, as of now, there is no open source healthcare representation. Let's change that! (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

Valdes, who lives in Houston, Texas responded: "Roger Sam, Houston confirms on a fresh install that GUI scheduling has landed." and posted a screenshot. Calling it a "very significant event. Not only does this add GUI-scheduling, it also enables .Net client programming." and "Many small steps for a software engineer, one giant leap for VistA." Valdes notes that this will greatly broaden the reach of VistA, facilitating its use in ambulatory care. "This community owes a debt of gratitude to Sam Habiel." (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

Medical, the Universal Health information system, is finalist on Sourceforge 2009 Community Awards.

With over 47,000 nominations, the community has chosen 85 finalists in 12 categories. Medical is among the best 10 projects this year for government.

This is very exciting and rewarding. To be among the 10 best projects (sharing the space with projects like Open Office) shows the recognition from the community to humanitarian projects like Medical, and positions open source in health sector, an area limited to proprietary vendors until now.

I would like to thank all the doctors, biochemists and computer scientists that are working on the project (from Argentina, Belgium, India, Indonesia, Germany, USA, Uruguay... ) and to all of you who have trust our project by using it, voting it...

The Veterans Health Administration's open-source electronic health record system VistA is a fully integrated, enterprise-wide healthcare information system that has been developed and used for the past 20 years by the Veterans Health Administration, the largest, centrally directed, healthcare system in the U.S. VistA has been deployed in about 1,500 care sites. More private-sector oriented, open-source versions such as WorldVistA and OpenVista, whose source code is freely availabe could be an effective and low-cost option for non-Veterans Affairs hospitals that are seeking to implement a complete hospital information system, but have been held back by the cost.

Open-source VistA can be customized for large hospitals as well as small medical practices, and can serve across the continuum of...

For you VA VistA fans, here is the status of GUI-registration which has recently changed with tmg-cprs. In case you didn't know, patient registration up until recently was text-based and somewhat annoying in an otherwise good system:

tmg-cprs: works now and so far works very well in clinical situations. Point-click client installer available now and should work out of the box as of Astronaut WorldVistA server Beta 6 installer. It is not browser-based so client deployment is not as simple as browser-based. The non-browser based client is both an advantage and disadvantage for deployment reasons. Local IT staff and management likes that it is not browser-based. It does not require multiple logins or application switching. Works well under pressured situations. Editing demographic mistakes ...

Medsphere CEO Michael Doyle told me recently that existing investors have committed $6 million for the round so far. Since it was founded in 2002, Medsphere has raised $50 million from investors that include Azure Capital Partners, Epic Ventures, and Thomas Weisel Partners. The company is commercializing an open source software version of VistA, the electronic health record system developed for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.' It looks like Buckminister Fuller's GRUNCH of Giants is alive and well. I now see the connection between HIMSS, Partners and AMIA. I've often wondered why AMIA has always been dominated by the Northeast/Massachutsetts crowd, why things like the Linux Medical News Freedom Award has been given such a cold reception year after year, and why AMIA leaders seem to hold such contradictory positions to AMIA's mission. Things like government intervention bad (but we lobbied for it secretly), taxpayer money good, proprietary vendors good, physicians and taxpayers in perpetual financial servitud...

OpenEMR releases version 3.0

The OpenEMR project has released version 3.0 on SourceForge. The new release has integrated practice management, improved multi-language support, and E-Prescribing. We have packaged a very easy to install Windows version using Xampp version 1.7.0. Thanks! “Friends of Apache.”

What we have in the works is a Debian package, an RPM package and integration of the HHS required interoperability module, laboratory communication module, and with some infrastructure improvements are hoping to be compatible with CCHIT certification by the end of this summer.
Towards fair EHR certification

Fred Trotter has a wrap up of the recent HIMSS CCHIT certification meeting on F/OSS. "Take away lessons:

Under the current model it is difficult to have the cost and benefit of the certification evenly distributed.
There is no way to easily ’share’ the certification
There is no maintainable benefit to being the organization that sacrifices to get a certification for a particular FOSS codebase.
It is not possible to prevent other organizations to certify a system that has already been certified.
Proprietary ontologies, like CPT, are a problem for the distribution of FOSS EHR systems. (Source: GNU/Linux And Open Source Medical Software News)

JAMA has a blockbuster article on Health IT vendor 'Hold Harmless' contracts. Linux Medical News readers know is just the tip of the proprietary Electronic Medical Record iceburg such as the interoperability scam, the failed EMR business quandry, and the sustainability conundrum among many other things that has yet to be widely discussed. Courageous and forward-thinking past LMN contributor Scot Silverstein has a number of further analyses here and here. '...As a former CMIO/Director of Informatics I would never have signed such a contract. Period. (Of course, CMIO's and Directors of Informatics don't generally sign or even see health IT contracts, as they are Chiefs and Directors of Nothing.) Have hospital executives, boards of directors and counsel been violating their responsibilities a...
