Comparison of mandibular bone mineral density in osteoporotic, osteopenic and normal elderly edentulous subjects measured by the dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry technique

Conclusion:  Classification of edentulous mandibles according to low and high bone mineral densities is a problem in implant dentistry. The results of this study demonstrated that femoral bone mineral density status may be used to provide preliminary information about the bone mineral density of the mandibular body region in elderly edentulous subjects.
Maximal voluntary tongue pressure is decreased in Japanese frail elderly persons

Conclusion:  In comparison with the reported standard value using the same device, the frail elderly persons included in our study were found to exert less MVTP than healthy dentate individuals. These results suggest the need for proper quantitative evaluation of oral function, including tongue capacity, at nursing care facilities. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusion:  The results of this long‐term follow‐up study show that the outcome of implant‐supported mandibular overdenture treatment was excellent. The patients were satisfied with the treatment, regardless of the attachment type used. Removable overdentures are more easy to clean and can be cleaned outside the patient’s mouth, whereas fixed‐implant full‐arch dentures in the edentulous mandible require much more time‐consuming hygiene. This kind of overdenture treatment is suitable also in the elderly, even though their ability to practice appropriate oral hygiene might be decreased. (Source: Gerodontology)

The effect of osteoporosis on residual ridge resorption and masticatory performance in denture wearers

Conclusion:  Greater masticatory function was demonstrated by the non‐osteoporotic group, and the rate of RRR was more in the osteoporotic group compared with the normal group. In this pilot study, osteoporosis leads to greater RRR, decreased masticatory performance and efficiency in edentulous subjects 6 months after denture insertion. Screening for osteoporosis is suggested as a routine procedure for all edentulous subjects undergoing rehabilitation. Recall check‐ups for osteoporotic patients should be more frequent, and these patients may require more frequent denture remakes. (Source: Gerodontology)

Gerodontology 2011; doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00455.xGiant dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the right hemifacial area involving the oral cavityAlthough liposarcoma is a reasonably common soft tissue sarcoma in adults, its occurrence within the head and neck region is very rare. The following report presents the case of a giant dedifferentiated liposarcoma initially located in the temporal region and then extending to the entire right maxillofacial region. Clinical as well as histopathological features and therapeutic approaches of dedifferentiated liposarcoma are discussed, and a literature review is presented. (Source: Gerodontology)

An oral health care guideline for institutionalised older peopleInstitutionalized older people are prone to oral health problems and their negative impact due to frailty, disabilities, multi‐morbidity, and multiple medication use. Until recently, no evidence‐based oral health care guideline for institutionalized older people has been available. For that reason, the Dutch Association of Nursing Home Physicians developed the Oral health care Guideline for Older people in Long‐term care Institutions (OGOLI), meeting the requirements of the AGREE instrument for assessing a guideline’s quality. This short report presents the keynotes and the content of the Oral health care Guideline. Most recommendations are based on expert opinions. ...

Palatal schwannoma in an elderly womanSchwannoma also known as neurilemmoma is a benign tumour derived from schwann cells and is relatively rare in occurrence. Only 1% of the schwannomas in the head and neck region occur at intra‐oral sites. Schwannomas usually occur during the third or fourth decades of life and the tongue is the most common intra‐oral site. A case of intra‐oral schwannoma in a 70‐year‐old female in the region of hard palate is described which is extremely rare. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusion:  Recruitment, communications and logistics present challenges in conducting a province‐wide survey. Identification of employment, education and dental visit frequency as predictors of survey participation provide insight into possible non‐response bias and suggest potential for underestimation of oral disease prevalence in this and similar surveys. This potential must be considered in analysis and in future recruitment strategies. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusion:  The effects of using a DA depend on the amount of the remaining residual maxilla. Our study showed that if the remaining residual maxilla is less than a quarter (Group 3), it is difficult to have confidence in the effectiveness of the DA to improve masticatory function. On the other hand, the use a DA showed improved speech intelligibility test values in all groups. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusions:  Demographic and behavioural variables explained many of the differences seen in nutrient intakes. After controlling for these variables, we found that a numeric threshold of teeth (i.e. a functional dentition) influenced some nutrient intakes while the number and type of teeth present affected other nutrient intakes.
Conclusion:  It can be concluded that the treatment of the joint surfaces with methyl‐methacrylate increases the flexural strength of denture base repairs, although the strength is still lower than that observed for the intact denture base resin. Abrasion with sandpaper was not able to influence the flexural strength of repaired denture bases. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusion:  Management of maxillofacial injuries in this population should focus on targeted prevention programmes, which address known risk factors for falling. We believe that this is a public health issue. Members of the maxillofacial team should be aware of common risk factors of falls in elderly. Better collaboration with the Medicine for Elderly team should be considered at an early stage on managing these patients. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusions:  Tori prevalence in our study group is high and is significantly related to age (p < 0.05) having a peak at over 60 years. The preferential site of TP in the posterior palatal area and this location has an impact on decision making in treatment planning for the upper denture. (Source: Gerodontology)

The number of missing teeth in people of the Edo period in Japan in the 17th to 19th centuries

Conclusion:  The Edo people had more remaining teeth than modern‐day society. This finding was unexpected. The notion that “people of long past ages lost more teeth more quickly” does not seem to apply to people in the Edo period in Japan. (Source: Gerodontology)

Conclusion:  Pre‐impregnated E‐glass fibre nets and polymer pre‐impregnated E‐glass unidirectional fibres are useful in reinforcing acrylic resin complete dentures especially were heavy occlusal forces are involved. Glass fibre reinforcement will be applied on the tension side in both cases (total fibre reinforcement and partial fibre reinforcement).
Conclusions:  The results are in contrast to European studies wherein the majority of patients agreed to denture marking, indicating patient background (e.g. education level) may affect perception to denture marking; amongst those who agreed to marking, most preferred, or were satisfied with, the stainless steel and paper strip markers over photographic marker and a complex method such as bar‐coding, implying that simple methods harbouring basic patient information may suffice in the Indian context. Tonsillolithiasis and orofacial painTonsilloliths are rare calcified structures that usually result from chronic inflammation of the tonsils. Concretions show differences in size, shape and colour. They are usually asymptomatic but can be associated with halitosis, foreign body sensation, dysphagia and odynophagia, otalgia, and neck pain. A patient was referred because panoramic radiography performed by a general dentist revealed radiopaque shadows over the ascending rami of the mandible, located bilaterally: a solitary structure on the higher portion of the right side and two small structures on the left side. Paroxysmal attacks of orofacial pain and symptoms such as dysphagia and swallowing pain on the left side di...

Conclusion:  Immediate action is needed and appropriate strategies need to be implemented. Oral health prevention, delivery policies and funding should be integrated within the general health care system. Clinical protocols and guidelines need to be developed on the oral care of the elderly. Interdisciplinary training in the care of the elderly needs to be implemented for all health care workers (dentists, physicians, nurses, health care aids, social workers) at all education levels to enhance comprehensive care.
