<description>The NHS National Innovation Centre was established by the Department of Health to identify challenges within the NHS and act as a gateway for industry to bring solutions to those challenges. Through their 'Wouldn't It Be Great If' clinical needs identification process they have highlighted a number of areas needing innovative approaches to improve outcomes for patients.

From the output of this clinical needs process, four new SBRI competitions have been created.

1. Paediatric Non-invasive Technologies
Looking for innovative and emerging technologies to enable non-invasive (or minimally invasive) tests to be performed at the bedside, in the community or in the home.
2. Paediatric Improved Diagnostics for Children

<description>A new website is available through the NHS National Innovation Centre (NIC) that identifies priority clinical needs and links innovators to funding to support the development of solutions.

An initial set of six priority clinical needs, which were defined during the recent NHS Innovations EXPO workshops, are now available for review under the Competition Section of www.nic.nhs.uk.
These Competitions are now open and ideas for funding can be submitted through the online portal. The key features of these competitions include:
• Competition for ideas and new technologies
• Fully funded development contracts – not a grant
• Fast-track, simplified process
• Suitable for SMEs
• Public sector organisation acts as lead customer
• Should result in a commercial product/service

<description>Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology are exploring new ways to create, enhance, and employ electrospun fibres for medical device applications. Using a variety of polymers, they have used electrospinning processes to form fibres continuously and achieved diameters ranging from 0.1 to 1 µm. The team are experimenting with enhancing the fibres for drug-delivery and tissue-engineering applications, such as modifying the fibres by incorporating a bactericide or chemically reactive compound into a solution with the polymer so that it is reactive to a certain chemical toxin when the fibre is spun.

<description>The Israeli Institute of Technology has developed a robot - the ViRob - that can crawl through human veins to perform precise medical procedures, and could potentially diagnose and treat artery blockage and cancer. Researchers have produced a basic prototype of the device, and possible applications include delivering drugs to targeted areas to treat lung cancer, and harvesting samples from various parts of the body. The ViRob has tiny arms that allow it to stabilise against blood pressure. It is powered by an external magnetic field, can be controlled for long periods of time during procedures and achieves speeds of 9 mm/second.

<description>Researchers from three UK universities are developing transducer technology that does not operate in resonance, allowing the design of smaller ultrasonic cutting instruments. Their aim is to create devices that surgeons could use to perform minimally invasive procedures on delicate areas of the body such as the spine. Current systems have to be resonant, so the device must be tuned to the operating frequency and this dictates what size the device has to be. The researchers are developing ultrasonic cutting instruments that will incorporate flextensional transducers providing an amplified longitudinal motion.

<description>As part of the work of the Ministerial Medical Technology Strategy Group NHS Technology Adoption Centre has been looking at new processes for driving ‘Demand Pull’. Putting Clinicians to the fore in defining the technologies required to satisfy unmet clinical needs.
They have been working with the Cardiac Networks in the North of England and London to run two workshops which brought clinicians together from across the Heart Failure pathways. The Workshops debated the technologies which are currently seen as standard of care and those that are in the pipeline or in use in early adopter sites.
The teams then explored where gaps exist and where there are real opportunities to support the unmet clinical needs with new technology.
The next steps will be to hold two workshops

This is one of the recommendations of a new report launched by ERBI Medtech. The report 'Is the future of medical devices wireless?' was produced following a facilitated workshop, which brought together experts from the fields of medical device development, wireless technology and healthcare. The aim was to discuss the issues that face technologists when developing devices for a range of healthcare environments including assisted living and hospitals and propose a roadmap for moving the industry forward.
