Conclusions The current study, therefore, is an attempt to identify children with learning disorders and explore the prevalence of the
problem and etiological factors e.g., family environment, social factors and developmental issues of child and associated co-morbidities. More studies with larger
sample size should be undertaken to get accurate picture of these disorders. There is also need for some community based programme
to raise the level of awareness and knowledge about these disorders in general population.

Abstract Brain tumors are the second most common malignancy and the major cause of cancer related mortality in children. Though significant
advances in neuroimaging, neurosurgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy have evolved over the years, overall survival rate
remains less than 75%. Malignant gliomas, high risk medulloblastoma with recurrence and infant brain tumors continue to be
a major cause of therapeutic frustration. Even today diffuse pontine gliomas are universally fatal. Though tumors like low
grade glioma have an overall excellent survival, recurrences and progression in eloquent areas pose therapeutic challenges.
As research continues to unravel the biology including key molecules and signaling pathways responsible for the oncogenesis

Abstract Hereditary Elliptocytosis is a heterogeneous group of disorder with regard to clinical presentation, protein defects and mode
of inheritance. Parvoviral induced transient aplastic crisis in the form of sudden onset anemia is said to be a rare manifestation
of this hereditary hemolytic anemia. The authors describe a case of parvoviral induced transient aplastic crisis in a patient
with hereditary elliptocytosis and review the pathogenic mechanisms of parvoviral hemolytic disease.

Abstract Eventration of diaphragm is defined as an abnormal and permanent elevation of the hemidiaphragm without defects. It may be
congenital (muscular hypoplasia) or acquired (injury of the phrenic nerve). Diaphragmatic eventration has been reported alone
or in association with other malformations. Here the authors are presenting a case of eventration of diaphragm with gastric
duplication cysts because they could not find such association in the available English literature.

Abstract Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis [HLH] is a reactive disorder characterized by generalised non-malignant histiocytic proliferation
with prominent hemophagocytosis. It may be either primary [familial (FLH)] or secondary [infection or malignancy associated].
Organisms incriminated for infection associated hemophagocytic syndrome (IAHS) include viruses, bacteria, spirochetes, fungi
and parasites. Reports of IAHS associated with tuberculosis in neonates are rare. The authors report a case of perinatal tuberculosis
presenting as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.

Abstract Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia
and recurrent bacterial infections especially in respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. The authors present here a case
of CVID with uncommon gastrointestinal manifestation in the form of CVID enteropathy. Based upon the clinical presentation
and histopatholic findings the patient was diagnosed as CVID enteropathy and treated with intravenous antibiotics and 3–4
wkly intravenous immunoglobulin infusion and he had responded poorly to gastrointestinal symptoms but the frequency of respiratory
and skin infection reduced. CVID has heterogenous gastrointestinal manifestations; among them the CVID enteropathy is an uncommon
presentation which re...

Abstract A case of unilateral pulmonary hypoplasia in association with abdominal situs inversus (Situs Inversus Partialis) is described
here in a 2-mo-old baby. The normally related heart (levocardia) is dextroposed due to the hypoplastic right lung and compensatory
hyper-inflation of the opposite lung which clinically mimicked a mirror-image situs inversus totalis. Such a combination,
to the best of authors’ knowledge, has never been reported in the world literature.

Abstract Tumoral calcinosis is a rare, benign condition of extra-osseous calcification. The term tumoral calcinosis has been liberally
and imprecisely used to describe any massive collection of periarticular calcification. It is important to diagnose and differentiate
it from other similar conditions causing extra-osseous calcification. The authors report here one such case having tumoral
calcinosis around scapula mimicking as chondromatous tumor.

Abstract Impaction of a foreign body (FB) in the larynx is a rare situation. It is more common in children then older age group. The
authors report two cases of unusual foreign bodies in the larynx which presented with complaints of sudden onset of change
of voice without any respiratory difficulty. One was of 9 y and other was a 7-y-old boy with foreign body in the glottis.
In both cases there was accidental inhalation of the FB which was immediately followed by difficulty of speech. Metallic foreign
bodies were removed successfully by direct laryngoscopy under general anesthesia (GA) which is followed by recovery of the
symptoms.

Abstract Epidemic dropsy (ED) results from accidental ingestion of adulterated mustard oil with argemone oil. Chief organs involved
in this disease are heart, subcutaneous tissue, eyes and kidneys. Nervous system involvement is very rare. Objective manifestation
of neurological involvement is even rarer. The authors report two cases from the same family, who were victims of epidemic
dropsy along with their parents. One of them showed objective neurologic involvement in the form of brachial neuritis and
another showed palatal palsy.

who presented with an acute respiratory illness and progressive breathlessness since 1 y. Genital hyperpigmentation was noticed
since 2 y of age; the onset of pubarche and increasing penile size at 4 y. He was admitted in congestive cardiac failure with
a blood pressure of 150/100 mm Hg. Facial acne; slight facial, pubic hair and penile enlargement were additionally noted.
Chest radiograph revealed cardiomegaly. Basal ACTH and 17-OHP levels were high. A diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia
(11β-hydroxylase deficiency) was made due to hypertension with virilized genitalia. Cardiac failure was controlled with flui...

Abstract The authors retrospectively analyzed the case records of all the newborns admitted with the diagnosis of neonatal tetanus
(NT) over a period of 36 mo. A total of 27 cases of neonatal tetanus were admitted over a period of 36 mo. Out of these 27
neonates, 17 died and thus the overall mortality was 63%. The mean age of onset of symptoms in those who survived was 8.1 ± 2.02 d
whereas in those who died was 5.7 ± 1.39 d, which was statistically significant (p = 0.001). The babies with age of onset <7 d were almost 5 times more likely to die than those manifesting at 7 d or later.
Thus, NT is still contributing to neonatal deaths especially in the backward areas of the country and onset of symptoms within

Conclusions Factors contributing to PD in urban poor families are similar to those reported in rural India; which implies that ICDS-Health
services for both urban and rural poor need to ensure that national IYCF guidelines—healthcare recommendations are followed
by communities. Further research relating PD to desirable complementary feeding and hygiene-healthcare practices in rural
and urban areas is required.

Abstract Raised intracranial pressure is a life threatening condition; unless recognized and treated early, it may progress into herniation
syndrome and death. Symptoms and signs are neither sufficiently sensitive nor specific, hence a high index of suspicion and
vigilance are needed for early recognition. Immediate goal of management is to prevent / reverse herniation and to maintain
good cerebral perfusion pressure. The therapeutic measures include stabilization of airway, breathing and circulation, along
with neutral neck position, head end elevation by 30°, adequate sedation and analgesia, minimal stimulation, and hyperosmolar
therapy (mannitol or 3% saline). Short-term hyperventilation (to achieve PCO2 ≈ 30 mm Hg) using bag ventilation can be resorted to if...

Abstract Transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a life threatening and potentially fatal complication of blood component
transfusion, which largely remains under- diagnosed and under-reported, especially in neonates. The present case aims to emphasize
that TRALI should be kept as a differential diagnosis in all groups of patients, including neonates, who develop acute respiratory
distress and fresh lung infiltrations in the chest radiograph within 6 h of blood component transfusion in the absence of
evidence of volume overload or cardiac dysfunction. Its recognition is important in view of the associated illness and death,
for instituting correct management, and for eliminating implicated donors from donor panels.

and most of the remainder dying before 5 y of age. The authors present a case of a 13-y-old boy, a paternal orphan with vertically
transmitted HIV infection, lost to follow up after diagnosis in infancy, surviving to date without any major illness or medical
intervention, till the present episode of full blown AIDS. The boy presented with shock, pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP), disseminated tuberculosis, Herpes Simplex Type 1 (HSV-1) infection, anemia, malnutrition and oral candidiasis.

Emergence of Ceftriaxone Resistant Shigella

Abstract Shigellosis is endemic in many resource-poor countries due to feco-oral transmission, resulting in considerable morbidity
and mortality. There is rapid emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) Shigella spp. resulting in poor reliability of first line antibiotics like quinolones, co-trimoxazole and ampicillin. Ceftriaxone has been
used as a reserved antibiotic for treatment of MDR Shigella spp. The authors report a case of ceftriaxone resistant Shigella flexneri successfully managed with meropenem. As occurrence of ceftriaxone resistant Shigella is still rare, the objective of reporting
this case is to highlight the possible failure of ceftriaxone in treating shigellosis which if not detected timely can result
in mortality.

Abstract The authors report two brothers who presented with motor delay and stiffness. The elder boy had auto-mutilation of lips and
fingers. Serum uric acid was elevated in both the children. Both the boys had undetectable hypoxanthine–guanine phosphoribosyl
transferase activity in hemolysate, confirming the diagnosis of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Molecular genetic testing revealed a
new mutation in the HPRT1 gene.

Abstract Acute Infantile Encephalopathy Predominantly Affecting the Frontal Lobes (AIEF) is a relatively recent described entity. This
article includes case reports of two patients who had bifrontal involvement during acute febrile encephalopathy. Case 1 describes
a 1-y-old boy who presented with hyperpyrexia and dialeptic seizures. Imaging revealed significant bilateral frontal lobe
involvement while serology proved presence of Influenza B infection. Over a period of one wk, he recovered with significant
cognitive decline and perseveratory behavior. Another 6-y-old boy presented with language and behavioral problems suggestive
of frontal dysfunction after recovering from prolonged impairment of consciousness following a convulsive status epilepticus.

Conclusions Parents of children with developmental disabilities face many problems in getting rehabilitative services. They travel long
distances, face hardships in carrying their child, and lose their day’s earnings, apart from spending time and money for their

Abstract Acquired amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia is an unusual hematological disorder characterized by thrombocytopenia along with
markedly diminished megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. There is no uniform consensus on the treatment and the case reports
in pediatric age group are few. The authors report a child with this condition who responded to cyclosporine alone.

Abstract Coagulation parameters are routinely requested among all age-groups in pediatrics to identify abnormalities which may contribute
to bleeding manifestations or thrombotic complications. These results are vital especially in the management of sick children
although in some cases, they may be helpful in identifying those with inherited bleeding disorders and to confirm or exclude
non-accidental injury. Despite the usefulness of these screening tests, it is important that the professionals who are responsible
for the care of children interpret the results of these tests in the most accurate manner to avoid unnecessary further investigations
and inappropriate management.

Abstract Hemophagocytic syndrome is a rare disorder mainly affecting children. Symptoms include prolonged fever, hepatosplenomegaly
and cytopenias. Allogeneic stem cell transplant appears to provide the best overall cure rate in this disease. The authors
report a young boy, the second child of consanguineous parents, diagnosed with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis
(HLH) who underwent allogeneic stem cell transplant form HLA matched father.

Abstract Type 1 diabetes remains the predominant form of diabetes in the pediatric population, while the incidence of type 2 diabetes
has increased, paralleling the increase in obesity. Another form of diabetes, Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY),
should also be considered especially in those whose clinical presentation is atypical for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Although
testing for MODY is a challenge, testing in appropriate patients and family members should be standard of care. Knowledge
of the genetic etiology of the type of diabetes will enable appropriate treatment and optimize outcomes, allow more accurate
prediction of disease progression, as well as allow screening for and the diagnosis of MODY in family members.

Abstract Children with systemic onset Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SOJIA) are known to develop myocarditis and congestive heart failure
as a complication of disease process infrequently. Cardiac involvement causing congestive heart failure as a presenting manifestation
in SOJIA is rarely described in the literature. The authors describe a case of an 11- yr- old boy with SOJIA who presented
with congestive heart failure following active myocarditis, with the flare of the disease process. The cardiac manifestations,
along with the disease activity were controlled with intensive immunosuppressive therapy.

Conclusions This study shows that Sri Lankan children have a higher %FM from a younger age even when they are classified as wasted. As
they grow older, the changes that occur in FM are more than FFM. This chart analysis clearly shows that BMI is not a good
index to measure %FM in individuals of this population.

Abstract The authors present the first case of Galloway Mowat Syndrome (GMS), a rare disorder comprising of nephrotic syndrome in association
with microcephaly, from India. An 11-mo-old girl with microcephaly, developmental delay and nystagmus presented with nephrotic
syndrome. The perinatal and neonatal periods had been uneventful. The renal biopsy revealed mesangial proliferation with IgM
deposition, while MRI of the brain showed hypomyelination. Molecular diagnosis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) did not
reveal any pathogenic sequences in the exons and the flanking intronic regions of the NPHS2 gene and LAMB2 gene. The infant
responded to prednisolone. GMS must be suspected whenever microcephaly and global developmental delay occurs in association

Abstract Isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) may be congenital, often due to genetic mutations, or acquired as a result of other
factors such as cranial irradiation. The commonest genes implicated in its genetic etiology are those encoding growth hormone
(GH1) and the receptor for GH-releasing hormone (GHRHR). Rarely, IGHD may be caused by mutations in transcription factors (HESX1, SOX3, OTX2) or be the first presentation before the development of other pituitary hormone deficiencies. IGHD has been classified in
four genetic forms (type IA, IB, II and III). Despite the increasing number of genes implicated in the etiology of IGHD, mutations
in known genes account only for a small percentage of cases; therefore, other as yet unidentified factors may be implicated
in it...

Abstract Surfactant replacement therapy is the main treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome. However, surfactant therapy
has been shown to be effective in the treatment of other diseases causing neonatal respiratory diseases such as pulmonary
hemorrhage, meconium aspiration syndrome, pneumonia/sepsis, pulmonary edema or acute lung injury resulting a secondary surfactant
deficiency (SSD). Rarely, as like as in the present patient, exogenous blood aspiration such as breast milk or formula aspiration
may lead to SSD. Blood in alveolus leads to a significant biochemical and functional disturbance of the surfactant system
and inhibits surfactant production. Here, the authors report a preterm infant of 33 wk gestational age with secondary surfactant
deficiency d...

Abstract Acute seizure and status epilepticus constitute one of the major medical emergencies in children. Among children, the incidence
ranges from 4-38/100,000 children per year respectively. The incidence in developing countries is somewhat higher because
of infections. Although, the definition of status epilepticus is based on duration of seizures, the operational definition
is to treat any child who is brought seizing to the emergency room, as status epilepticus. An urgent time bound approach is
of paramount importance when managing a child in status epilepticus. Benzodiazepines remain the first line antiepileptic drugs
in the emergency room; a long acting drug (Lorazepam) is preferred when available. This is followed by Phenytoin (20 mg/kg)
loading. In patients ...

drugs are cheaper than the originator/comparator drug. The regulatory foundation for these products is more advanced and better
codified in Europe than in the US. Biosimilar soamtropin has been approved in both the US and Europe. The scientific viability
of biosimilar drugs and especially growth hormone has been proven by several rigorously conducted clinical trials. Efficacy
and safety data (growth rates, IGF-1 generation) for up to 7 y for pediatric indications measure up favorably to previously
approved growth hormones which served as reference comparators. The Obama Administration appears to be committed to establish

Abstract Recombinant human (rh) IGF-1 has been available for therapy since the 1980s and has been commercially available for over 5 y,
yet the role of rhIGF-1 in treating children with short stature remains ambiguous. This is consequent to the inherent difficulty
in defining criteria for IGF-1 deficiency, and in determining the outcome of rhIGF-1 therapy in terms of growth rate and adult
height. The rationale for its efficacy compared with rhGH (recombinant human growth hormone) for treatment of short stature
is still widely debated. Additionally, adverse events such as increased intracranial pressure and hypoglycemia are of therapeutic
concern. The goal of this article is to review published data that describes the impact of IGF-1 therapy in treatment of short
statur...

Abstract The first human to receive GH therapy was in 1956; it was of bovine origin and was given for 3 wk for metabolic balance studies
revealing no effects. By 1958, three separate laboratories utilizing different extraction methods retrieved hGH from human
pituitaries, purified it and used for clinical investigation. By 1959 presumed GHD patients were being given native hGH collected
and extracted by various methods. Since 1 mg of hGH was needed to treat one patient per day, >360 human pituitaries were needed
per patient per year. Thus, the availability of hGH was limited and was awarded on the basis of clinical research protocols
approved by the National Pituitary Agency (NPA) established in 1961. hGH was dispensed and injected on a milligram weight

Conclusions Normative data directed towards the ethnic origin are useful in charting dysmorphic traits. Children with parameters less
than 3rd percentile or more than 97th percentile should be evaluated for other co-existing anomalies. Percentile charts provided
in the present study may also be applicable across India but more studies are required to validate the authors’ contention.

Abstract The study was done to validate the use of automated devices (Datascope Duo) as a screening tool for measuring blood pressure.
A cross sectional study was conducted in school children from urban slums of Bangalore. Blood pressure was recorded according
to standard guidelines using a mercury sphygmomanometer and an automated device (Datascope Duo). The readings obtained using
the two instruments were compared. One thousand four hundred eighty nine school children, both males and females, aged 5–16 y
were included in the study. Readings with the Datascope Duo varied significantly when compared to the gold standard. The blood
pressure measurements using Datascope Duo cannot be recommended as an accurate substitute for manual readings.

etiologic theories for the disease have achieved independent confirmation. Clinical and epidemiologic features support an
infectious cause, but the etiology remains unclear. The authors present a case of Kawasaki disease associated with Epstein-Barr
virus and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in a 3.5-y-old boy. He received two doses of intravenous immunoglobulin due to prolonged course of Kawasaki disease
but later had complicated autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. His prolonged fever subsided after azithromycin administration. Epstein-Barr

Abstract Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) with low circulating IGF1 requires replacement therapy. Paradoxically, it remains a controversial
issue in a large part of patients, those considered as having isolated GHD of the idiopathic milder form. Challenges remain
in this area in spite of intensive and sometimes controversial studies. This is true for the diagnosis of the milder forms
(also called partial GHD), for the assessment of the growth response and the evaluation of final height benefit. In addition
the cost-benefit issue should not be ignored. Therefore, the author tried to review data relevant to the evaluation of GH
secretion which even now remains largely arbitrary. The growth response, which is the primary therapeutic goal in these children
should also be carefu...

Conclusions Certain specific considerations have to be born in mind while evaluating and managing neonatal dermatoses. Care has to be
instituted to identify accurately infectious diseases and distinguish them from benign transient neonatal dermatoses. Some
disorders first manifesting during the neonatal period may also represent harbingers of potential problems during adulthood.
Finally, treatment modalities are instituted taking in account the actual diagnosis and judging if the treatment really is
required or not.

Abstract Pallister-Killian syndrome (PKS; OMIM: # 601803) is a rare sporadic genetic disorder characterized by pigmentary skin changes,
distinctive dysmorphology, developmental delay, and mosaicism for tetrasomy of chromosome 12p. The authors report a case of
PKS in a 2-y-old boy. He had pigmentary skin changes, characteristic facial features, developmental delay and hearing loss.
He had sacral and post-auricular pits in addition, which has not yet been reported. A diagnosis of PKS was suspected on the
basis of the patient’s clinical features. Skin fibroblast culture was done which showed mosaic tetrasomy of isochromosome
12p consistent with Pallister-Killian syndrome. This case highlights the importance of dysmorphology as a diagnostic tool
for recognition and accurate ...

Abstract Headache remains a frequently encountered neurological symptom in Emergency department. Secondary causes of headache outnumber
the primary entities such as migraine. Most of the secondary headaches have benign etiologies. The goal of emergent evaluation
is to detect those with serious or life threatening causes. Identifying the pattern of headache helps in narrowing down the
possible etiological diagnosis. A single episode of acute headache usually results from an acute infection ranging from viral
URI to acute meningitis. Acute recurrent headaches are typically a feature of migraine. Chronic progressive headaches often
indicate a serious underlying pathology such as a brain tumor and warrant a detailed neurological examination for signs of
raised intracranial pre...

Abstract Infections particularly Mycoplasma pneumoniae and HSV have been reported to be the commonest precipitating cause for Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS) in children
in developed countries and drugs are the commonest triggers reported in the Indian context. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IvIg)
is emerging as a therapeutic option instead of glucocorticoids. The authors report a case of Stevens Johnson syndrome in association
with Mycoplasma pneumoniae in a 5-y- old girl who recovered with IvIg therapy.

Conclusions Though overall incidence of ROP has remained the same over the last decade at the authors’ centre, absolute number of severe
forms of ROP has decreased. Multiple gestations may be taken as an independent risk factor for ROP causation. Sicker the twin
infant is, the more are the chances that he/she will develop ROP.

Abstract Developing countries are now facing the double burden of childhood underweight and obesity. Childhood obesity is a recent
epidemic with a high magnitude in India. Therefore, the authors decided to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity
among Indian children. Studies were identified through computer-based and manual searches. Estimates of prevalence were studied
using random effects meta-analysis. Nine studies including 92,862 subjects were identified and analysed. The prevalence of
overweight was estimated to be 12.64% (95% CI 8.48–16.80%) and that of obesity to be 3.39% (95% CI 2.58–4.21%). Current evidence
suggests that policies and interventions for children should prioritize reduction of obesity and overweight.

Abstract Preterm birth results in poor accretion of bone minerals and development of rickets of prematurity. Poor skeletal growth is
one of the long term morbidities of this condition, which is said to have a lesser effect on the skull growth. The present
study was a retrospective observational study to compare the effect of rickets of prematurity on the linear and skull growth
in the first year of life. In this retrospective analysis, 1 y follow-up records of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies
born in five consecutive years and their anthropometric data were evaluated. ELBW babies with confirmed rickets of prematurity
were taken as the study group and those without were taken as the control group and anthropometric values (head size and length)

Abstract Congenital torticollis is most commonly caused by sternomastoid contracture. Aplasia of sternomastoid muscle causing congenital
torticollis, though rare, has been reported. However the association of cerebellar hypoplasia with sternomastoid aplasia is
extremely rare. The authors describe a case of congenital torticollis due to absence of the left sternomastoid with ipsilateral
cerebellar hypoplasia, confirmed by MRI.

Conclusions The mortality rate was significantly high in neonates with a culture-proven sepsis compared to those with a negative blood
culture. PROM >24 h, Apgar score <6 at 5 min, birth weight ≤1.5 kg and mechanical ventilation were independent risk factors
for culture-proven sepsis, while lethargy, shock and birth weight ≤1.5 kg were independent predictors of mortality.

had been treated for brucellosis during pregnancy. Infant developed mild respiratory distress syndrome soon after birth. At
2nd wk of postnatal age findings of bronchopulmonary dysplasia were evident and she and her mother were diagnosed to have
brucellosis at the same time. After commencement of antibrucellosis therapy and nonspesific treatment for bronchopulmonary
dysplasia, infant was completely cured of the symptoms related to both brucellosis and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The results
of the present case and a review of the literature have let to conclude that Brucella might have role in development of prematurity

Abstract The authors report a case of 13-y-old boy who presented with pain in bilateral knee and ankle joints accompanied by petechiae
all over the body and hematochezia. On investigation, he had pancytopenia, which on subsequent evaluation revealed aplastic
anemia. On investigation for short stature, he was diagnosed as a case of celiac disease. He was started on gluten free diet
and the counts improved over 8 mo. Association between aplastic anemia and celiac disease has rarely been reported. To the
best of authors’ knowledge only 8 adult cases of celiac disease associated with aplastic anemia have been published. This
is the first report to suggest an association in children and response to a gluten free diet.

Abstract Mutations in the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABRG2) gene have been associated with generalized epilepsy, childhood
absence epilepsy and febrile seizures. In the present study the authors investigated the association of polymorphism of the
GABRG2 with simple febrile seizures (FS) in Egyptian children. Polymorphism at GABRG2 (SNP211037, Asn196Asn), on chromosome
5q33 were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) in 100 Egyptian children
with simple FS, and 120 healthy controls. The frequency of CC genotype of GABRG2 gene was significantly higher in children
with simple FS compared to healthy children (p ≤ 0.0001). The C allele of GABRG2 was associated with increased risk for developing s...

Abstract Generalized pigmentation in a child may be seen in a variety of disorders which can be clinically differentiated. Accuracy
of diagnosis can be increased by classifications based on both clinical and histological findings. The authors report a case
of siblings in whom hyperpigmentation started at age of about 6 mo and was progressing. Histology of skin revealed shortening
and blunting of rete ridges with presence of melanocytes in stratum basal layer. This is a rare type of hypermelanosis and
termed as universal acquired melanosis or carbon baby syndrome. This is a rare presentation and first case report in siblings.

Abstract Chromosomal mosaicism for full aneuploidy involving chromosome 9 is an uncommon chromosomal abnormality. Mosaic trisomy 9
clinical manifestations are highly variable and difficult to predict. The authors present a case of mosaic trisomy 9 with
typical clinical manifestations (facial dysmorphism, various internal organ malformations and severe psychomotor retardation),
pigmentary mosaic skin lesions along the lines of Blaschko and evidence of maternal uniparental disomy in skin.

Abstract Fanconi -Bickel Syndrome (FBS) is described as an autosomal recessive Glycogen Storage Disorder type XI. The underlying enzyme
defect is unknown. The gene GLUT2 maps to 3q26.1-q26.3; encodes a facultative glucose transporter gene. A 6-y-old girl presented with the characteristic facial
gestalt, glucose and galactose intolerance, proximal renal tubular dysfunction, hepatomegaly, and altered liver function.
To confirm the diagnosis, mutation analysis was performed. Patient showed homozygous mutation in exon 9 of GLUT2 gene 1093 C>T, the mutation causing transition from arginine to stop codon at position 365 and causing premature termination
of protein. The mutation was found to be causative as previously described. To the best of authors’ knowledge this is f...

Abstract Pediatric soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors constituting about 7% of all cancer cases.
Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMS) constitute about half of all soft tissue sarcomas in children, the rest being constituted by non-
rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcomas (NRSTS). Most RMS present in young children <6 y of age while the NRSTS occur in adolescents
and young adults. The latter constitute a diverse group of tumors and are rare in children. The STS generally present as painless
enlarging mass or with symptoms of compression/infiltration of adjacent organs or structures. Staging, risk stratification
and multidisciplinary approach are needed for the treatment of STS and outcome depends on stage, site and histological type.

Abstract Malaria is a major vector borne disease in India with significant morbidity and mortality. The official figure of 1.5 million
cases annually is a gross under-estimation of the true incidence and the actual figures are estimated to be 10–100 times higher.
The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) directorate is the main body responsible for malaria control
in India. Newer strategies including insecticide treated bednets, longlasting insecticidal bednets and rapid diagnostic tests
have been used for malaria control in the last decade. Global assistance has come from the World Bank and Global fund in the
form of Enhanced Malaria Control Programme(EMCP) and Intensified Malaria Control Programme(IMCP) respectively. Despite years

Conclusions This study suggests that the prevalence of SpLDs is at the higher side of previous estimations in India. The study is unique
due to its large geographically representative design and identification of the problem using simplified screening approach
and tools, which minimizes the number and time of specialist requirement and spares the expensive investigation. This approach
and tools are suitable for field situations and resource scarce settings. Based on the authors’ experience, they express the
need for more prevalence studies, remedial education and policy interventions to manage SpLDs at main stream educational system
to improve the school performance in Indian children.

Abstract Non traumatic coma in childhood is an important emergency. It can result from wide range of etiologies. CNS infections are
the most common cause of non traumatic coma in children. However, multiple interrelated factors may be present in one patient.
Management of a comatose child goes hand in hand with clinical evaluation. It is an emergency that requires simultaneous institution
of immediate life support, identification of the cause and institution of definite therapy. The primary goal is to establish
airway, breathing and circulation and to identify and treat raised intracranial pressure and seizures.

cells from the circulation in thalassemic patients and therefore, significant increase wasn’t determined in the concentration
of MDA.

Abstract Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile illness of infants and young children that is characterized by a medium vessel vasculitis,
most commonly involving the coronary arteries. Though subclinical myocarditis is rather common in KD, symptomatic congestive
heart failure is extremely uncommon. The authors report a 9-y-old boy who developed heart failure (ejection fraction 28%)
in the acute phase of KD. He was initially treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (2 g/kg) without much clinical improvement.
He was then given 5 daily pulses of intravenous methylprednisolone followed by tapering doses of oral prednisolone. The child
showed prompt clinical recovery and remains well on follow-up. The present case serves to highlight the fact that methylprednisolone

perinatal asphyxia. SCFN secondary to therapeutic whole body hypothermia has rarely been reported. With increasing use of
cooling for moderate to severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), clinicians should recognize this potential complication.
