Conclusion:  The results support that the characteristics of magnet hospitals that improve the practice environment could play a critical role in retaining nurses in hospitals. Managerial interventions that enhance the practice environment, reduce job stress, and place graduate nurses in nursing units with a single specialty could benefit the hospitals employing such nurses. Further research to explore the effects of managerial strategies on graduate nurses' turnover intention is warranted. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Conclusion:  Expressing empathy with another person's negative emotion led to increased physiological activity and subjective stress. Physiological responses to empathy depended on cognition of the different subjective factors. Cognition of sharing negative emotions activated the right temporal region of the brain, whereas cognition of understanding negative emotions inhibited bilateral frontal activities.
AbstractTranslational research can be conceptualized within several blocks or spheres of knowledge transfer and focused on closing the gap between new discoveries and their endpoint application to clinical practice, health decision‐making, and health policy. Although support for type 1 translational research (the classical bench‐to‐bedside paradigm) is common, it is types 2 and 3 that have the ultimate impact on sustaining important changes in clinical practice as health decision‐making and policy are changed to support the practice innovation. The Clinical Translational Science Centers (issued by the National Institutes of Health in the USA) provide many successful examples in which nurses are key stakeholders in achieving these translational goals for the improvement of clinical ...

Conclusion:  The survival strategies that were used by the male nurses were subtle, allowing them to influence indirectly both the female nurses and the doctors. These findings contribute to our understanding of the experiences of male nurses, a gendered minority in a female‐dominated workplace, and encourage gender equality in the nursing profession.
Conclusion:  In this study, there existed significant differences between the scores of the nurses who received in‐service training about the implantable port catheter and the scores of those who did not receive in‐service training. The majority of the nurses who participated in the study were willing to receive in‐service training regarding this subject. Thus, the organization of in‐service training programs and the implementation of care, according to the developed standards and guidelines, are considered as significant for reducing the occurrence of the complications that are related to the use of the implantable port catheter.
Conclusion:  Herbs and other alternative supplements were used by some children with a chronic disease in Turkey. The most commonly used CAM therapies included oral herbal medicine, taking the child to hodja, massage, and diets. Therefore, it is important to consider the implications of the popularity of complementary therapies. Most of the mothers used more than one of these therapies for their child and the anxiety level of the mothers was found to be moderate. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Conclusion:  The lifestyle factors of the pregnant women were different, based on their work situation. In particular, the employed pregnant women had a shorter daytime sleep duration. The pregnant women who stopped working during their pregnancy could have benefited from mental health support. In addition, the reasons for stopping work during pregnancy were different in the three trimesters. A flexible system is needed for working women that adapts to the physical changes that occur during pregnancy. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Potential of sucrose‐induced analgesia to relieve pain in male adults: A preliminary study

Conclusions:  These findings suggest that sucrose stimuli might induce the antinociceptive effects on pain in male adults. More trials are needed to further elucidate these effects before this analgesic method can be used for clinical pain in adults. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Conclusions: The developed scale has acceptable validity and reliability for measuring the caregiving burden of family members with relatives in Japanese nursing homes. Future studies using the scale might lead to the improvement of care for family members with relatives in a long-term care setting. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Conclusions: This study shows that a significant percentage of nursing and midwifery students receive NSSIs. It is very important to frequently review information about preventive measures so that the students practise them during clinical practise every semester. Moreover, the instructors should monitor if the students are taking the necessary preventive measures without fail. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

This article provides highlights of a lecture, titled Community-based Participatory Research: A Culturally Focused Case Study, given at the Japan Academy of Nursing Science's 29th annual meeting in Chiba, Japan on 28 November 2009. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is defined as research that includes both the researcher and the participant group in collaborative, egalitarian, and partnership processes to assess, define, problem-solve, evaluate, and disseminate an issue that is chosen by the stakeholders. A CBPR framework is highlighted and case-study examples from each stage are included. The barriers and facilitators for communities and researchers taking part in CBPR projects are described. Strategies to improve researcher competence in CBPR are listed. Community-based parti...

Conclusion: The studies reviewed in this article suggest that the evidence on the efficacy and effectiveness of closed suctioning systems is inconclusive. Only limited populations will benefit clinically from the use of this device. There is a need for further studies with randomized controlled trials to explore the use of closed suction systems and to update current clinical practise guidelines.
Conclusions: If patients are discharged to a rehabilitation hospital before they are totally recovered from surgery, the emphasis might be on their rehabilitation without adequate management of their comorbidities. Additional prospective studies are needed to determine the effects of a shorter length of hospital stay after hip fracture surgery on patient outcomes.
Conclusions: Although we cannot generalize from the results the happiness of all Thai elderly, the present study found that formal education, geographical areas, and gender can influence happiness. Health-care providers should be concerned about and provide the proper intervention and/or activities in order to alleviate the mental health problems among the elderly in communities, especially the elderly who are identified with poor happiness.
Conclusion: It is easy for disease to progress in patients with cancer and those with poor strength, so it is necessary to match the functional status of individual patients. It also is important to support patients in practising PMR whenever they have the desire, by respecting their will. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Conclusion: The EPDS score decreased with an increased frequency of delivery, suggesting that the experience of delivery would impact on postnatal depression, partly because of decreased obstetric events. However, a social assistance system is needed for women with general health abnormalities, less sociability, worries about baby care, and limited cooperation of the husband for both primiparas and multiparas.
Conclusions: The serum potassium level significantly affected not only physical health, but also QOL, a measure of psychosocial health. This suggests that providing nursing support to patients, guided by the serum potassium target range of 3.5[ndash]5.0 mEq/L, might improve and maintain QOL.
This article provides highlights of a talk titled, "Building a Program of Research," given at the Japan Academy of Nursing Science's 28th annual meeting, Fukuoka, Japan, on 13 December 2008. A program of research is defined as a coherent expression of a researcher's area of interest that has public health significance, builds from the published research literature in the field, has relevance for clinical nursing practice, and captures the passion and commitment of the researcher. The Outcomes Model for Health Care Research is proposed as a framework for how to develop and articulate a program of research. Eight steps are proposed to help a new researcher to think about how to build a program of research. (Source: Japan Journal of Nursing Science)

Conclusion: The emergence of these three high-scoring items show promise for the further refinement of this multidimensional approach to understanding the range of responses experienced by mothers with HR infants. The results are useful for understanding the psychological tendencies of mothers with HR infants and, possibly, in the future might aid in the screening of mothers for those attributes.
Conclusion: It is essential for service-providers to offer services specific to the situation or desires of mothers. Mothers might need both consultation services and support groups to reinforce the mother[ndash]child relationship, for social support, and to freely discuss worries with both professionals and peers.

Conclusions: The nursing hours and NNS are predictors of pressure ulcer development and physical restraint use. The results also suggest that we should revise our process of nursing care. Many functions that might be shared with other personnel are performed by nurses, which results in longer total nursing hours but shorter direct nursing hours, used in order to observe and care for patients. Japan's aging population will result in higher NNS, requiring more direct nursing hours and other personnel to participate in our process of nursing care.
Conclusion: In this study, a large difference could be seen in the comparison of visual behavior by clinical experience. It was clear that the students carefully tried to check each critical point as they were not used to infusion pump operation. It also was found that, although the nurses had relatively consistent eye movement, the students did not grasp the checkpoints and the positions of fixation were dispersed easily as a consistent nursing procedure had not been established.
