Conclusions: The FcgammaRIIIB NA1/NA2 polymorphism was associated with both aggressive (per-allele OR 2.005, 95% CI: 1.044, 3.851) and chronic periodontitis (recessive contrast NA2NA2 versus NA1NA1+NA1NA2 OR 1.397, 95% CI: 1.039, 1.878). The analysis showed weak evidence for association between the FcgammaRIIA H131R polymorphism and aggressive periodontitis in Asians (R versus H allele OR 1.579, 95% CI: 1.025, 2.432). On the contrary, no relationship was identified between FcgammaRIIIA F158V and periodontal disease. Accumulating evidence from basic research makes the suggested association between FcgammaRIIIB NA1/NA2 polymorphism and periodontitis biologically plausible. Further research, however, is needed in order to assess possible gene-gene or gene-environment interactions (i.e. with s...

Conclusions: Periodontitis was highly prevalent in German adults. To reduce periodontal burden, treatment of periodontal diseases and continuous maintenance should become an integral part in dental practice. Furthermore, health recommendations should be implemented at the community, professional, and individual level.

Conclusions: In multivariate logistic regression analysis, a high-risk patient profile according to the PRA model at the end of APT was associated with recurrence of periodontitis. Another significant factor for recurrence of periodontitis was an SPT duration of more than 10 years.

Conclusion: In all three treatment options, the SR of the implants is more than 95%. The studies included reveal that a maxillary overdenture supported by six dental implants, which are connected with a bar, is the most successful treatment regarding survival of both the implants and overdenture. Second in line is the treatment option with four implants and a bar. The treatment option with four or less implants and a ball attachment system is the least successful.

CONCLUSIONS: MMP-13 could be implicated in the degradation of soft and hard supporting tissues and proMMP-9 activation during progression of chronic periodontitis. MMP-13 and -9 can potentially form an activation cascade overcoming the protective TIMP-1 shield, which may become useful for diagnostic aims and a target for drug development.

Conclusion: Elevated anti-CL antibody levels were associated with periodontal destruction in BD patients. Periodontopathic bacteria may serve as exogenous antigens that stimulate the anti-CL antibody production through molecular mimicry between the bacterial peptides and a host plasma protein.

Conclusion: This study failed to demonstrate differences in the healing pattern after 6 weeks when placing four different implant systems in fresh extraction sockets. In spite of achieving predictable osteointegration with the four implants studied, the occurrence of buccal bone resorption may limit the use of this surgical approach.

Conclusions: The present findings suggest that ACE I/D and AT1R polymorphisms might be associated with susceptibility to CP but not with disease severity. The D allele of ACE I/D might be associated with decreased, whereas the C variant of AT1R A1166C might be associated with an elevated risk for CP in Turkish population.

CONCLUSION: The coolant control system of the different units did not provide a reliable indication of the water flow. Also, some perio tips gave less water coolant as compared with other tips of the same brand. Consequently, a change of tips during treatment may require adjustment of the water coolant supply.

The effect of periodontal therapy on the survival rate and incidence of complications of multirooted teeth with furcation involvement after an observation period of at least 5 years: a systematic review.

CONCLUSIONS: Good long-term survival rates (up to 100%) of multirooted teeth with furcation involvement were obtained following various therapeutic approaches. Initial furcation involvement (Degree I) could be successfully managed by non-surgical mechanical debridement. Vertical root fractures and endodontic failures were the most frequent complications observed following resective procedures.

Conclusion: In this study population serum lipid levels were not associated with periodontal infection among normoweight subjects. Obese subjects with a high serum triglyceride level and/or a low HDL-cholesterol level could be at higher risk of periodontal infection. Our results suggest that the association between body weight and periodontal infection was mainly mediated through a mechanism other than serum lipids.

Conclusion: The included literature suggested that promising short-term results could be achieved for immediate, early and conventional single-implants in the aesthetic zone. However, important parameters as aesthetic outcome, soft-tissue aspects, and patient satisfaction were clearly underexposed. The question whether immediate and early single-implant therapies would result in better treatment outcomes remained inconclusive due to lack of well-designed controlled clinical studies.

Conclusion: No association could be observed between MBL gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to periodontitis in Caucasians. However, now that genotyping could distinguish the low producing and deficient subjects from the high-producers, it was observed, for the first time, that MBL acts as a weak acute-phase protein in periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: The remit of this working group was to update the existing knowledge base in non-surgical periodontal therapy. The published systematic reviews from the fourth EAP Workshop formed the starting point for this update and in addition specific innovations not covered in previous workshops were included. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The literature was systematically searched and critically reviewed. Five manuscripts were produced in five specific topics identified as areas where innovative approaches have been developed in non-surgical periodontal therapy and which were deemed to be strategically important for patient care and clinical practice. RESULTS: The results and conclusions of the review process are presented in the following papers, together wit...

CONCLUSIONS: Despite the significant differences of modest magnitude, FMD or FMSRP do not provide clinically relevant advantages over CSD. Hence, all three treatment modalities may be recommended for debridement in the initial treatment of patients with chronic periodontitis.

CONCLUSION: Newer designs of powered instruments have not shown any benefit when compared with other ultrasonic devices in non-surgical periodontal therapy. New in vitro research shows there is variation in the performance of different tip designs and generators, but its clinical relevance remains unknown.

CONCLUSIONS: The Er:YAG laser seems to possess characteristics most suitable for the non-surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis. Research conducted so far has indicated that its safety and effects might be expected to be within the range reported for conventional mechanical debridement. However, the evidence from the evaluated studies is weak.

CONCLUSION: If systemic antimicrobials are indicated in periodontal therapy, they should be adjunctive to mechanical debridement. There is not enough evidence to support their use with periodontal surgery. Indirect evidence suggests that antibiotic intake should start on the day of debridement completion, debridement should be completed within a short time (preferably <1 week) and with an adequate quality, to optimize the results.

CONCLUSION: Within its limits the present analysis indicates that: (a) The combination of barrier membranes and grafting materials may result in histological evidence of periodontal regeneration, predominantly bone repair. (b) No additional benefits of combination treatments were detected in models of three wall intrabony, Class II furcation or fenestration defects. (c) In supra-alveolar and two wall intrabony (missing buccal wall) defect models of periodontal regeneration, the additional use of a grafting material gave superior histological results of bone repair to barrier membranes alone. (d) In one study using a supra-alveolar model, combined graft and barrier membrane gave a superior result to graft alone.

CONCLUSIONS: Clinically, the consensus highlighted that bone augmentation procedures can fail and that implants placed in these areas do not necessarily enjoy the high long-term survival rates of dental implants placed in pristine sites. The consensus emphasized the research need to answer questions on: (i) long-term performance of dental implants placed in augmented bone; (ii) the clinical performance of dental implants placed in augmented or pristine sites; and (iii) the clinical benefits of bone augmentation with respect to alternative treatments.

CONCLUSIONS: Within the limits of the systematic review there was evidence that the evaluated augmentation techniques result in similar implant survival between augmented and pristine sites. The small number of retrieved studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria limited the conclusions regarding the success of the augmentation and its effect on the survival of the implants. Properly designed randomized controlled clinical trials on this topic are needed.

CONCLUSIONS: For the concept of vertical ridge augmentation to enable dental implant placement, there are clinical and histological data supporting its potential use. Given the confined number of investigators using these techniques and the low number of patient treatments reported in the literature, the generalizability of this approach is limited at this time.
