A treatment protocol with lithium disilicate restorations and a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) fabrication process is proposed for the restoration of teeth in the esthetic zone. The technique involves trial insertion of restorations at the precrystallized stage, allowing verification of the marginal fit and evaluation of the internal adaptation and overall esthetic plan to ensure an optimal clinical result for the definitive restorations. Furthermore, this procedure allows most adjustments to the lithium disilicate ceramic to be made before crystallization and minimizes potential surface and subsurface damage to the definitive restorations.
A technique using a transparent vinyl polysiloxane material developed for use with light-polymerized composite resin and that does not require a lubricant is presented for creating composite resin undercuts for partial removable dental prosthesis clasps. With a surveyor, the undercut is waxed on the diagnostic cast according to the intended path of insertion. The transparent vinyl polysiloxane is used to fabricate a template for the undercut. The template is used intraorally to create the undercut in composite resin on the abutment tooth. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

This study analyzes and quantifies the effects of different registration techniques on the condyle position and how the registration technique modulates bilateral masseter and anterior temporalis muscle electromyographic activity.

 Material and Methods:
Three-dimensional electronic condylar position analysis (EPA) with an ultrasound-based jaw-tracking system and surface electromyographic activity (sEMG) was recorded during the registration of a manually guided centric relation (CR), maximal intercuspation (MI), and Gothic arch tracing guided centric relation (DIR method). Participants were 26 stomatognathically healthy volunteers (mean age, 30.6 ±9.5 years). Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni correction (α=.05).

 Results:

The clinical impression procedures described in this article provide a method of recording the morphology of the intaglio and cameo surfaces of complete denture bases and also identify muscular and phonetic locations for the prosthetic teeth. When the CAD/CAM technology for fabricating complete dentures becomes commercially available, it will be possible to scan the denture base morphology and tooth positions recorded with this technique and import those data into a virtual tooth arrangement program where teeth can be articulated and then export the data to a milling device for the fabrication of the complete dentures. A prototype 3-D tooth arrangement program is described in this article that serves as an example of the type of program than can be used to arrange prosthetic teeth virtuall...

Statement of problem:
Surplus alloy from the initial casting is commonly reused with the addition of new alloy. This recasting procedure could affect the cytotoxicity of dental alloys.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of repeated casting of high-noble and base metal alloys on gingival fibroblast cytotoxicity.

 Material and Methods:
Disk-shaped specimens (5 × 2 mm, n=60) of a high-noble (Au-Pt) and 2 base metal (Ni-Cr and Cr-Co, n=20) alloys were prepared with 100% new alloy and 50%, 65%, and 100% once recast alloy. The elemental composition of specimens was analyzed with X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Five specimens from each group were conditioned in saline with 3% fetal bovine serum albumin. The conditioning medi...

Statement of problem:
The marginal adaptation of metal ceramic crowns is affected by firing cycles for veneering porcelain application. The effect of multiple firings on the marginal integrity of pressable ceramic core crowns is unknown.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of repeated firing cycles on the marginal discrepancy of veneered (layered) pressable ceramic anterior crowns with 2 different finish line configurations.

 Material and Methods:
Forty pressable ceramic single anterior complete crowns were fabricated from 2 systems (IPS Empress Esthetic and IPS e.max Press) with 2 finish line designs (shoulder, chamfer) on epoxy resin dies. Specimens were divided into 4 groups of 10, and measurements were made after pressing...

Statement of problem:
Various aspects of anatomic tooth dimensions have been examined in a number of studies where data are primarily based on the measurements obtained from white subjects. Additional factors such as ethnicity should be considered to produce a more comprehensive analysis.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to compare the anatomic crown dimensions of extracted maxillary teeth in Asian and white populations.

 Material and Methods:
The width/length ratio (%) was calculated with standardized digital images of extracted maxillary anterior teeth from 157 Asian and 142 white subjects. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the 4 tooth groups (central incisiors, lateral incisiors, canines, and premolars) of the 2 ethnicities. The distributio...

A unique method for fabricating cast-based surgical guides is presented. A proposed position and mesiodistal angulation of the implant are verified with periapical radiography and registered with a commercially available guide sleeve. The sleeve is attached to a surgical guide made of light-polymerized acrylic resin. The surgical guide can be used in a broad range of situations and allows for accurate implant placement in a prosthetically driven position with surgical access and visibility, simplicity, and cost efficiency.
Statement of problem:
Rapid prototype (RP) models are used in craniofacial reconstructions; however, there are no standards or acceptable limits to ensure accuracy of the fabricated models.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of RP models by validating the accuracy of SLA skull models with a coordinate measurement device.

 Material and methods:
Stainless steel spheres were located on a dry cadaver skull as fiducial markers, scanned with Multi Detector Computer Tomography (MDCT), and interpreted with software for rapid prototyping. Seven stereolithographic (SLA) models were fabricated and measured with a coordinate measurement device. An Euler rotation transformation calculation was applied to standardize the coordinate system between ...

Statement of problem:
Although the effectiveness of primers for resin bonding to noble alloys has been demonstrated, no effective clinical technique for bonding to noble metal ceramic alloys has been established.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of metal primers on the shear bond strength of an adhesive resin to noble metal ceramic alloys after thermal cycling.

 Material and methods:
 Sixty-three disk-shaped specimens (10 × 2.5 mm) were cast from high-gold-content alloys (Super Metal W-85: W85 or IFK88 GR: IFK88), a high-palladium-content alloy (Super Metal N-40: N40), and an Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy (Castwell M.C.12: MC12). Smaller-sized disk-shaped specimens (8 × 2.5 mm) were fabricated with MC12. Bonding surfaces were finished with 6...

Statement of problem:
Implant overdenture prostheses are prone to acrylic resin fracture because of space limitations around the implant overdenture components.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of E-glass fibers and acrylic resin thickness in resisting acrylic resin fracture around a simulated overdenture abutment.

 Material and methods:
A model was developed to simulate the clinical situation of an implant overdenture abutment with varying acrylic resin thickness (1.5 or 3.0 mm) with or without E-glass fiber reinforcement. Forty-eight specimens with an underlying simulated abutment were divided into 4 groups (n=12): 1.5 mm acrylic resin without E-glass fibers identified as thin with no E-glass fiber mesh (TN-N); 1.5 mm acrylic ...

Statement of problem:
Crowns cemented on short implant abutments may have insufficient retention.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of circumferential grooves on the retention of cemented cast copings on implant abutments.

 Material and methods:
Sixty similarly-shaped implant abutments were divided into 4 groups (n=15): without grooves, with 1 groove, with 2 grooves, and with 3 grooves. Fifteen identical NiCr cast copings were prepared to fit all 60 abutments. The castings were cemented to each group of abutments with a noneugenol provisional cement (Tempbond NE) and a zinc phosphate cement (Harvard). After thermal cycling and storage for 6 days in a water bath, retention tests were conducted with a tensile testing machine (Instron)...

Conclusions:
A preliminary protocol is suggested for both treatment planning and profiling patients with respect to presenting characteristics that may contribute to implant failure. A decrease in failure occurrence has been noted anecdotally during the short term implementation of this protocol. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) consists of prolonged spasms caused by contraction of the muscles of the mouth and mandible and involves the muscles of mastication, facial expression, tongue, and eye lids. A multidisciplinary treatment approach is presented including the fabrication of a dental prosthesis to reduce/eliminate the symptoms of OMD. Etiology and treatment issues are discussed, emphasizing the importance of an interdisciplinary treatment approach. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Prosthodontic treatment of a patient taking nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates to preserve the integrity of the epithelial attachment: A clinical report

Osteonecrosis of the jaw has been identified in recent years as an unfortunate potential side effect for patients taking nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates. Many authors have attempted unsuccessfully to elucidate the mechanism behind this drug-induced malady, leaving dentists with unclear guidelines on how to treat these patients. Recent literature suggests a threshold-related impairment of epithelial cell migration over bone. A conservative, non-invasive approach aimed at preserving the epithelial attachment in a patient on a long-term oral alendronate protocol is described. The advantage of this approach is to prevent a highly destructive bone degenerative process that does not have a clear and predictable treatment protocol.
A single appointment protocol to create a partially edentulous CAD/CAM guided surgical template: A clinical report

The traditional technique for creating a CAD/CAM surgical template with a NobelGuide protocol is to fabricate a radiographic template that depicts the planned tooth position first. Multiple appointments are needed for the fabrication of the radiographic template with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) before the surgical procedure can start. An alternative technique is described for fabricating a radiographic template at the initial examination appointment and capturing the necessary DICOM data to plan and fabricate a CAD/CAM surgical template in a 1-appointment protocol, thereby saving the patient and clinician time and reducing the need for multiple appointments.
An accelerated technique for casting a direct-pattern post and core restoration for use in fixed prosthodontics has been previously described. Similar techniques for use in removable prosthodontics show potential for clinical use, specifically for the fabrication of radicular stud overdenture attachments and their corresponding copings. The procedure uses a chairside technique and readily available components to fabricate a direct, acrylic resin pattern combining the elements of a cast coping with a fixed radicular attachment. This pattern can subsequently be invested, cast, finished and polished, luted, and attached to the removable prosthesis in a single clinical appointment.

Statement of problem:
Endodontic access preparation through lithium disilicate ceramic restorations may damage the restoration and compromise its load-bearing capability.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this in vitro research was to investigate the effect of simulated endodontic access preparation through lithium disilicate glass-ceramic restorations on their load to failure.

 Material and methods:
Sixty lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD) complete-coverage restorations were milled and crystallized. Five coats of die relief were applied internally in the crown to provide a cement space approximately 60 μm in thickness. Composite resin dies were fabricated by backfilling each crown. The specimens were then stored at 37°C and 100% humidity for 30 days. Th...

Statement of problem:
Different surface conditioning, cleaning methods, and ceramic primers are used to improve bonding to zirconia ceramic. However, maintaining a durable bond with zirconia ceramic under various clinical conditions remains a challenge.

 Purpose:
This in vitro study investigated the durability of the bond strength of adhesive luting cement to zirconia ceramic after the application of a new universal primer.

 Material and methods:
Ninety-six disks were fabricated from zirconia ceramic (e.max ZirCAD). Disks were conditioned either with airborne-particle abrasion with 110 μm Al2O3 (AB) or silica-coated (SC). Thereafter, disks were cleaned either with oil-free air (A) or by ultrasonic cleaning (U) in alcohol. A conventional silane (S) (EspeSil) or...

Statement of problem:
Several factors exist which result in crown preparations that are less than ideal. In these situations, the clinician should find a practical way to overcome the lack of resistance of the compromised tooth preparation.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different auxiliary features on the resistance form of crowns with reduced axial wall height and increased total occlusal convergence.

 Material and methods:
An Ivorine tooth was prepared on a milling machine with 22 degrees of total occlusal convergence (TOC), 3.0 mm of occlusocervical height, and a chamfer finish line (Group Ctrl). The crown preparation was subsequently modified to include proximal grooves (Group Grv), and reduced TOC from 22 to 4 degrees in...

Survival of turned and roughened dental implants in irradiated head and neck cancer patients: A retrospective analysis

Conclusions:
Implants with turned surfaces were 2.9 times more likely to fail compared to the roughened dental implants, although the difference did not reach statistical significance. For implants with turned surfaces, there was a tendency for implants in the maxilla to fail more frequently compared to the mandible. Implants with turned surfaces had a higher likelihood of failure in the posterior region than in the anterior region. For implants with roughened surface there was no significant association between implant survival and location of the implant, type of bone, or length or diameter of the implant.
Maxillary sinus augmentation with a sonic handpiece for the osteotomy of the lateral window: A clinical report

Several techniques have been proposed to manage patients with insufficient bone height for implant placement in the posterior maxilla. The lateral approach to sinus elevation is a successful procedure, with percentages of success close to 100%. Unfortunately, a frequent complication encountered during sinus elevation procedure is perforation of the Schneiderian membrane. In this clinical report, the authors present the application of a diamond coated sonic tip and an air-driven sonic instrument, commonly used in prosthodontics for the preparation of the lateral window osteotomy during sinus augmentation procedures.
Clinical dentists increasingly face pressure from the media, manufacturers and commercial laboratories, and from speakers at national, international and local meetings to practice contemporary, state-of-the-art esthetic dentistry. At the same time, academic authorities are exhorting clinicians to practice “evidence-based dentistry” and to base their treatment recommendations on sound science. The 2 approaches, unfortunately, are not completely compatible. At the time of writing it is unclear how much evidence is essential over what time period to declare that a given material, procedure or technique is evidence-based. This is difficult to answer, and the answer may be different for different materials, procedures, or techniques. The typical hierarchy of evidence-based treatment with sy...

Severe and rapid erosion of dental enamel from swimming: A clinical report

The diagnosis and treatment of a patient with excessive and rapid erosion of enamel is presented. Although the Center for Disease Control and the dental literature have reported on dental enamel erosion resulting from swimming pool chlorination, the awareness of such etiology among dental professionals may be limited. Common findings in these reports include cold sensitivity, a distinctive appearance resembling laminate veneer preparations of the facial surfaces of anterior teeth, occurrence of diastemas, and at times, a rough or gritty texture of the remaining tooth structure. Clinical presentations of erosive lesions can be diagnosed and the best course of treatment determined. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Nonrigid connection of tooth with implants in the esthetic zone with a ceramic restoration: A clinical report

Restoring edentulous areas with fixed prostheses can be challenging, especially when key abutment teeth are missing and implant placement is not an option. Sometimes, clinicians are faced with situations where teeth have to be connected with implants even though long-term prognosis of those connections may be questionable. This clinical report presents a connection of 2 implants with 1 tooth in the esthetic zone with a nonrigid connection. Two zirconia custom abutments and 1 zirconia coping definitively cemented on the tooth were used. A zirconia superstructure, veneered with porcelain, was cemented with provisional cement on the abutments and the coping. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Management of misangulated implants for a maxillary overdenture with spherical abutments: A clinical report

Misangulated and malpositioned implants pose a significant challenge for the prosthodontic treatment of edentulous patients. Most reports of maxillary overdenture patients have described the use of a bar to splint malaligned implants, followed by successful fabrication of the prosthesis. Few reports have discussed the use of individual abutments in such situations. This clinical report describes the successful use of spherical/ball abutments for the management of 4 malaligned implants in the edentulous maxilla for an overdenture. The rationale and technique for the use of spherical abutments for overdenture fabrication in such situations are described. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Precise fit between dental implants and the superstructure is important for the long term success of implants and implant-supported prostheses. One factor which may influence the accuracy of the definitive prosthesis is the stability of the impression coping in polymerized impression material. In some circumstances, an implant must be placed well below the gingival margin, meaning that most of the impression coping will also be situated subgingivally with no contact with the impression material. This can result in reduced stability of the impression coping, allowing it to rotate when fastening the implant analog. The use of longer impression copings to increase the surface area has been suggested to overcome this problem; however, only a few implant systems offer this solution. (Source: Jo...

An alternative multiple pontic design for a fixed implant-supported prosthesis

In situations of moderate residual ridge resorption where multiple tooth replacement is needed, and where the patient desires a fixed implant-supported restoration, it is challenging to design a pontic-tissue interface. The semiconvex multiple pontic design described in this article, with its mucosal contact exerted with moderate pressure, is proposed to circumvent the problems encountered with the plaque accumulation, maintenance conditions, phonetics, and compromised esthetics frequently encountered in these patients. The use of a screw-retained, implant-supported restoration is also emphasized to allow for sufficient tissue contact during placement of the prosthesis and for prosthesis retrievability for maintenance or technical reasons.
This study examined the effect of fabrication method and margin configuration on the marginal and internal fit of complete titanium crowns.

 Material and Methods:
An acrylic resin maxillary first molar was prepared with shoulder (buccal), chamfer (palatal), and knife edge (proximal) margin configurations. Forty crowns were produced and then divided into 2 groups according to the manufacturing method (casting method or CAD/CAM technique) (n=20). Each crown was luted to the original stone die with zinc phosphate cement. The margin of the crown, center point of the axial wall, and occlusal area were measured with a 3-dimensional measuring microscope. An independent t-test (internal gap) and repeated measures 2-way ANOVA (marginal gap) were used for statistical analysis (α=.05).

Statement of problem:
The oval-shaped palatal roots of maxillary molars usually have smaller cross-sectional diameter in the buccolingual direction. However, the effect of parallel-sided post preparation on the remaining dentin thickness of root canal walls is unknown.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate, in vitro, the residual dentin thickness (RDT) of palatal roots in maxillary molars after various intracanal procedures for post placement, and to determine the risk of root canal perforation or weakening on different root canal walls at 2 levels, coronal and apical.

 Material and Methods:
Fifteen extracted first maxillary molars exhibiting radiographic mesiodistal root canal widths ranging from 3.8 to 4.2 mm, measured at 5 mm from the apex, ...

Statement of problem:
Ceramic laminate veneers are generally fabricated with varying thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 1 mm, depending on the need to mask discolored teeth or slightly correct the contour of malpositioned teeth. Clinical color reproduction poses a challenge because of color interaction with the underlying substrate, whether tooth structure or esthetic restorative material.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this in vitro investigation was to measure the effect of color change resulting from applying 2 shades of ceramic material, translucent (T1) and opaque (O2), to 2 shades of composite resin substrate material, light (A3) and dark (C4), on the overall color of ceramic laminates.

 Material and Methods:
Forty disks were fabricated. Twenty disks (15 × 0.5 mm...

Statement of problem:
Clinicians must know if a new screw can predictably increase reverse torque after multiple screw insertion cycles.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was (1) to compare the effect of multiple implant prosthetic screw insertion and removal cycles on reverse torque, (2) to determine whether a new screw, after multiple screw insertion cycles, affects reverse torque, and (3) to assess implant and prosthetic screw thread surface morphology with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

 Material and Methods:
One primary screw was paired with an implant (MT Osseospeed) and inserted to 25 Ncm torque 9, 19, 29, or 39 times (n=10). Primary screw reverse torque values were recorded after each insertion. A second, reference screw was then paired with each...

Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is a common symptom of periodontal disease and a motivation for the patient to seek dental therapy. The primary factors causing PTM are periodontitis and occlusal trauma. Comprehensive treatment for managing a moderate degree of PTM, including periodontal, orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment is described. Increasing the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) with provisional restorations was attempted to create space for retracting maxillary flared teeth. Retraction and intrusion of maxillary flared incisors were achieved by a sectional orthodontic appliance. Splinted crowns from maxillary right lateral incisor to left lateral incisor were fabricated and connected to posterior prostheses by means of attachments to prevent relapse and to provide long-term sta...

Removing posts from endodontically treated teeth without considering the effects of heat trauma can have adverse consequences for the tissues surrounding the roots of the associated teeth. Ultrasonic instrumentation has been widely used as a more conservative approach than other methods of removing posts without untoward sequelae. However, copious irrigation must be used to prevent elevated temperatures caused by ultrasonic energy. This clinical report presents the consequences of post removal in 2 maxillary incisors with ultrasonic instrumentation without sufficient regard to root overheating. Necrosis of the surrounding tissues was observed after 2 weeks. The functional and esthetic reconstruction of the area affected by the heat trauma is described.
Conclusions:
Shorter storage time of irreversible hydrocolloid impressions before pouring is desirable, although this may not be necessary for the extended-pour types. The lack of a standardized technique for studying the effect of storage condition, with or without the use of disinfectants, makes it difficult to make clear recommendations.
Statement of problem:
Ceramics should be radiopaque enough to be seen on radiographs and to be distinguishable from tooth structures. Information on the radiopacity of different ceramics used in restorative dentistry is limited.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the radiopacity of ceramics in comparison with human and bovine dental hard tissues and metals.

 Material and methods:
A total of 128 disk-shaped specimens, 6 × 1 mm (n=8), were prepared from dental ceramic materials and metals. The optical densities of each material, along with 2 tooth sections (canine and molar teeth), bovine dentin and enamel specimens, and 2 different aluminum step wedges, were measured from radiographic images using a transmission densitometer.
Statement of problem:
Most faces are not symmetrical, and this complicates the task of aligning the anterior segment of the teeth for the restorative dentist, orthodontist, or oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The dental literature provides conflicting advice regarding guidelines for aligning the anterior teeth.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine the sensitivity of laypersons to variations in the alignment of the anterior segment within a symmetrical face, and to investigate which guidelines were preferred by laypersons and prosthodontists when aligning this segment.

 Material and methods:
Lay participants (21) were shown a series of 25 modified images of faces on a computer screen and asked to indicate ‘noticeability’ of tilt and, with anot...

Statement of problem:
Female teeth are considered more rounded and male teeth more quadrangular. Although lacking in scientific support, this theory helps in selecting the mold of artificial teeth for dentures. Parameters that are more reliable are sought to determine gender differences in tooth form.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to assess possible differences between genders in terms of tooth form: oval, triangular, or quadrangular.

 Material and methods:
The sample comprised 433 subjects with a mean age of 15 years selected from a population of Brazilian high school students. The maxillary right central incisor (MCI) of each subject was photographed. The images were adjusted to standardize the long axis of the tooth in the vertical position. The Au...

Conclusions:
The least retentive components offer greater rotation than the most retentive components for all attachment systems tested and for both single and double attachments. Using the most retentive components, the Locator Extended Range attachment allows greater rotation than does the ERA for both single and double attachments. Using the least retentive components, the ORS attachment allows the most rotation and ERA the least for both single and double attachments. Using the most retentive components, one attachment allows greater rotation than does 2 attachments for the attachment systems evaluated. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by bird-like facies and dental anomalies. A description of a 21-year-old Hispanic woman with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, whose anterior open occlusal relationship and smile were improved with overdentures is presented. The treatment was satisfactory in terms of both esthetics and phonetics, excluding the need for aggressive surgical treatment. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Rotary cutting instruments and high-speed handpieces are routinely used in daily dental practice. These instruments are used not only for the preparation of natural teeth, but also for the removal of existing cemented fixed dental prosthesis (FDPs). Clinicians use rotary cutting instruments with high-speed handpieces to section existing cemented metal ceramic or ceramic FDPs by creating slots on the facial, incisal, and/or occlusal surfaces of the restorations until the cement is exposed. The restorations can then be removed from the mouth with minimal force on the abutment teeth. These demanding clinical procedures might negatively affect the performance and longevity of rotary cutting instruments and handpieces. Some may even encounter unexpected clinical problems such as fractured rotar...

Implant placement should be restoratively driven to eliminate or reduce complications during the restorative phase. The correct placement and angulation of dental implants are necessary for the functional and esthetic success of the prosthesis. Often, the restorative dentist will complete a diagnostic waxing to determine implant placement. This information, along with radiographs and the clinical examination, aids the restorative dentist in determining implant angulation, cementoenamel junction (CEJ) position, and the mesiodistal and buccolingual position of the implant. This information is transferred to the surgeon via a surgical template, eliminating guesswork at the time of surgery. (Source: Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry)

Conclusions:
RPDs remain a common prosthodontic treatment in this region. Non-metal RPD frameworks are a common treatment type and rarely include rests. These data indicate a changing partially edentulous patient population and a variable commitment to standard levels of prosthodontic care.
Statement of problem:
Even though metal ceramic restorations (MCRs) are widely used by clinicians, the influence of the metal on the color of overlaying porcelain is unknown.

 Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to analyze the color alterations of different types of metal ceramic alloys during several stages of metal surface preparation and to determine the effect of those changes on the resulting color of opaque porcelain (OP).

 Material and Methods:
Seven different types of alloys (3 base metal, 3 noble, and 1 high noble) were used to prepare disk-shaped specimens (1 mm × 10 mm, n=3), followed by OP application (0.1 mm). L*a*b* values of specimens were recorded after different stages of metal surface preparation (ingot, after casting, after oxidation, and...

Shear bond strengths of pressed and layered veneering ceramics to high-noble alloy and zirconia cores

Conclusions:
For shear bond strength of veneering ceramics to high-noble alloy, there was no significant difference between pressing and layering with the same manufacturer. For shear bond strength of veneering ceramics to zirconia, there was no significant difference between the pressed and layered groups.
