As part of an ongoing series, “Letters to the new president” that will run on CNN.com - Lance opens his letter with the following remarks:
“Here’s something that should outrage you: Every day, more than 1,500 Americans die of cancer. Our federal government knows how to prevent many of these losses. Tragically, its attention has simply been elsewhere.”

Last night Lance was in San Francisco at the Web 2.0 Summit. Below is the keynote he gave. It is about 40 minutes long, but well worth it in which he talks about a range of subjects including Twitter, Brett Favre, his comeback to cycling and even LL Cool J. So check it out.
While the history was there, it’s doubtful that anyone would have picked Gruene, Texas as the start of Lance Armstrong’s historic comeback to professional road racing. Back in 1996 it was a very different story as Lance, who admittedly “barely could ride a bike” due to cancer treatments, rode with legendary Eddy Merckx in a ceremonial Time Trial circuit. Then in 1997 he rode with teammate Kevin Livingston notching a 2nd place result.
Flash ahead 11 years later and Lance had teamed up with longtime friend John “College” Korioth to contest his first TT since July of 2005. Lance started off by winning the individual race Saturday and the 2-man contest with College on Sunday. But as always, the result is only part of the story, here’s a look at what it...

It’s with great sadness that the American cancer community bids farewell to Fred Baron. Fred believed fully in his responsibility to serve others and he did so with all his heart and every resource at his disposal.
You could always count on finding Fred on the side of those who needed his determination and wisdom the most. Many great causes benefited from his support but his generosity and dedication to the fight against cancer were singular and unwavering. The fact that we lost him, far too soon, to the very disease that he fought so hard to help defeat is heartbreaking.
Hopefully, this tragic loss and the great example he set for us will serve to strengthen our resolve to eradicate cancer. Our thoughts are with Lisa and Fred’s family as they mark his passing and we will continue ...

Let me get right to the point: I have been honored to have been a part of every Austin Ride for the Roses / LIVESTRONG Challenge since its inception in 1997, and I can assure you that this year’s edition was without question the best one to date. For those who are familiar with the weekend, the format hasn’t changed much in recent years. So what was the Big Difference? Balance. The LIVESTRONG Challenge team has really hit its stride, finding just the right mix of LAF mission, great events and venues, and appropriate ways to thank the great folks who help us to inspire and empower those affected by cancer. Here are some recollections from my weekend - and what a weekend it was:
Thursday - Picked up my friend and multi-year “yellow jersey” level fundraiser Wendy Chioj...

Our Vote to End Cervical Cancer
By Lance Armstrong and John Seffrin
Thursday, October 30, 2008; 12:00 AM
Preventing, treating and defeating cancer are among the greatest scientific challenges and personal triumphs of our time. And right now, we have the power to save our mothers, sisters and daughters from a type of cancer that claims a life every two minutes globally.
Cervical cancer progresses over decades, attacking women who might never know they are sick until it is too late. It often hits women in their prime, when they’re raising children, working hard and fully engaged in family, community and economic life, making these unnecessar...

While all aspects of the fight against cancer are important, it’s particularly so when a child is involved. We recently received word that Lance’s long-time friend and mentor Jim “Och” Ochowicz’s family has a particularly compelling situation. As you will read below, his nephew went out to do the right thing, give blood to help others, and is now in the fight of his life. Please see Mary’s note and the attached flyer and consider becoming a bone marrow donor. It’s simple, easy, and you never know just whose life you may be saving in the process. It’s something we all can do to help others LIVESTRONG! – Chris…

A while ago, I wrote about the LAF partnership with the YMCA of the USA. In that blog, I promised an update and I am keeping my promise.
Over the past year, 16 YMCA branches from across the US have participated in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. This physical activity and wellness program was created as a way to address the specific wants and needs of cancer survivors. The program varies at each YMCA depending on the needs of the cancer survivors within that particular community.
Recently, I have had the opportunity to travel to some of these Ys and see the program firsthand. The cancer survivors I have talked with are so grateful that the YMCA and the LAF are working together to help them. In a short period of time, many are seeing the benefits of the exercise with reduced fatigue an...

She will be checking in to answer questions that folks have, to offer suggestions and to try and stimulate some conversation around all that is going on here at the LAF. So if you are looking to meet up with some folks when you are in town for the LIVESTRONG Challenge, you have a question about cancer or you just want to hear what others are talking about then stop on by and see what is going on. Fortunately significant progress had been made in the fight against this particular disease, and thanks to more surgery and a couple of rou...

Lance on twitter and other updates

I just wanted to give everyone a quick update….
You can now follow Lance on Twitter. After we got Doug hooked on it – he got Lance excited about the idea and he has now officially joined.
What is Twitter you might be asking? Well twitter is a new social media technology. Like blogging it offers any person the opportunity to publish their thoughts to the world. The difference with Twitter is that it is defined as micro blogging – meaning every post is 140 characters or less.
You don’t have to sign up to follow Lance or Doug.

But it is a lot more fun if you do….
In the coming days I am going to be working on getting Lance’s feed up on the blog – just like Doug’s is now. So keep an eye out for tha...

These six runners, who range in age from 21 to 60, are participating in the marathon to raise awareness about this deadly disease, while honoring their friends, family and even their own battles with cancer.
They are also members on LIVESTRONG.com and you can read their stories, becomes friends with them, and track their progress from now until race day.

Today was another banner day for Team LIVESTRONG. Runners from all over the country toed the line at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon to raise funds and awareness for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the fight against cancer. In addition, we partnered with local Chicago organization and friends Imerman Angels (www.imermanangels.org) and fielded a huge team of runners. Yellow shirts were all over the course and manhy supporters lined the streets to cheer for our team. It never ceases to amaze me how many people put themselves on the line to support our cause – it is truly inspiring each and every time.
A beautiful morning gave way to a warm and sunny afternoon. Fortunately, the race organizers were prepared for the temperatures after a rough go last year. It was a well-s...

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has just released its 2009 Prescription Drug and Health Plan Choices. CMS is encouraging Medicare beneficiaries, their caregivers, and family members to go online and use the tools at online the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder and Medicare Options Compare to compare choices and find a plan that works best for them.
This is incredibly important for all those on Medicare - CMS has noted that there will be significant changes in the 2009 plan. From CMS’s press release Acting Administrator Kerry Weems has said “This year it is especially important, now and throughout the upcoming open enrollment period, for beneficiaries to use our online tools to compare their current drug and health plan coverage to the options available...

Give 100% of your marathon training and racing miles to a good cause and help fight cancer! Log your miles in Chicago’s Nike+ Marathon Charity Challenge. For this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Nike and Bank of America will be donating up to $100,000 through the Lance Armstrong Foundation to support programs at Children’s Memorial Hospital and the Imerman Angels.
The number of dollars donated depends on the number of miles you run and log through Nike+! To reach our goal of donating $100,000 to charity, we’ll need to have 500,000 Nike+ miles logged between now and midnight on October 12th. We currently have close to 358,000 miles and need your help! Help us join forces with runners around the world as we prepare for the 2008 Bank of America Chicago Maratho...

Elden, a long time advocate, and friend of the Foundation, recently had the opportunity to ask Doug a few questions about the Global Cancer Initiative. Elden is a great guy and an incredibly strong person.

Wsj article on the stigma of cancer worldwide

This past Saturday people from around the world picked up their Wall Street Journal and read an article that accurately captured why the Lance Armstrong Foundation wants to put a stop to the stigma associated with having cancer. The paper highlighted how difficult it can be to share one’s story with family and friends. Across many cultures, the stigma of cancer results in a deadly silence that keeps folks from seeking treatment and the help they need — in the U.S. and abroad. Take a look at what these people have to say about their cancer experience and when you are done with the article go to our website and learn how you can support the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Initiative.
Greetings on a very significant anniversary for all of us here at the LAF. 10//2 is the date back in ‘96 when Lance was given his cancer diagnosis and his life changed forever. To many of us, it’s an example of a day one faces a critical cross roads: How will I choose to deal with this crisis? If you’re Lance, you choose to fight like hell, despite the odds, despite the pain, and throughout the inevitable doubts and fears. And you choose the responsibility of the cured – sharing your story, trying to effect positive change and going on with a great life. But I’ll let him tell you about it. Below is the transcript of his statement to reporters a week after his diagnosis twelve years ago. If you get a chance, give it a read and send us your thoughts. Many thanks and...

This Wednesday, October 1st at 10pm EST (times and dates of broadcast differ by location, check your local listings), PBS stations will be airing In The Family. In The Family brings to life the story of young women looking for balance between quality of life and cancer prevention, in the face of a genetic mutation. This film humanizes the statistics and sheds light on the physical and emotional considerations that are part of this arduous decision making process.
The Lance Armstrong Foundation believes in everyone’s right to live life on their own terms and In The Family truly demonstrates this principle while highlighting the power of information and virtue of personal strength. After the broadcast you can visit www.inthefamilyfilm.com to chat about the issues raised in the film with...

Reading the news this morning, I was sad to learn that cancer claimed Paul Newman yesterday. Here’s another one of our greatest taken by a disease we can and should do more against. Our thoughts are with his family and the many people who loved him as they adjust to this profound loss.
Few of us haven’t been touched by one of Paul Newman’s films. And everyone knows he started a multi-million dollar company that poured every dime of profit into charities. What fewer people knew of was his devotion to children facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. He started the Hole in the Wall Gang camp in 1988 to provide children and their families with much-needed R&R, allow them to connect with parents and kids facing the same struggles and let them recharge together in a b...

Yesterday, Medicare launched a new website for Caregivers of people on Medicare called “ Ask Medicare”to help and assist those who are family members or friends who help people on Medicare. More than 44 million Americans, more than one in five adults, provide care to a loved one, friend or neighbor. Medicare hopes that this new initiative will provide a one-stop Web page for caregivers that provides easy access to useful information about Medicare and other essential resources to help with caregiving.
The Ask Medicare Web site will provide links to key partner organizations that assist caregivers and beneficiaries, and present personal stories from caregivers in the community. The site provides links to address common challenges in working with Medicare such as billing issues, naviga...

We wanted to take a quick moment to wish Lance a happy birthday on behalf of all the LAF staff. He is 37 today, which in a weird twist of fate means he was born in the same year that President Nixon declared war on cancer.
If you would like to wish Lance a happy birthday leave a comment below and we will make sure he reads them all. (Source: LIVESTRONG Blog)

Greetings, all… as you might imagine, the week here at the LAF started off with a substantial bang Monday morning as word leaked out via Velonews.com that Lance was rumored to be coming back to pro cycling to take on the Tour de France for an unprecedented win #8.

If you’ve ever been around professional sports in any capacity, you know that “rumor control” is among the top ways to get news, or sometimes even create it. When I was covering the Tour back in the day, journalists would go to the start line Village to not only get coffee and baguettes, but to just listen among those gathered for what the topic of the day was. Then, around the team buses, all it took was a hint from a staff member or rider that something was up, and off you’d go to try and chase it d...

I always remember growing up when my parents would talk about historical events and they would tell me in detail where they were when something major transpired. They knew where they were. They knew who was there. They knew what the weather was like. It was almost like they had taken a picture that encompassed all of the elements and it was engrained in their mind. Whether it was John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King, Jr’s death they remembered the vivid details.
As a kid raised in Maryland there were a handful of things I remember vividly in that same regard. I know exactly where I was when the Challenger exploded as it took off for space. The name Christa McAuliffe will forever be emblazoned in my mind. I know exactly where I was when Len Bias, the former University of Maryland basketb...

AUSTIN, Texas – September 9, 2008 – Today, Lance Armstrong, cancer survivor, founder and chairman of the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) and cycling champion, released the following statement regarding his return to professional sports:
“I am happy to announce that after talking with my children, my family and my closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden. This year alone, nearly eight million people will die of cancer worldwide. Millions more will suffer in isolation, victims not only of the disease but of social stigma. After the passage of Proposition 15 in Texas, a $3 billion investment in the fight against cancer which is helping to make this disease part of the national dialogue in America, it&...

Obama v. mccain - where do they stand on cancer?

Over the last two weeks all of America has had a chance to hear from both the Democrats and the Republicans about their vision for America - but where do they stand on cancer?
Today the Obama campaign released their plan to fight cancer and you can read it here.
The McCain campaign also released their plan to fight cancer today and you can read it here. Last month Senator McCain joined us at the LIVESTRONG Summit and shared his thoughts on fighting cancer and you can watch his remarks here.
As we move closer to the election it is important for all of us to become educated on the issues that are important to us. We applaud both Senator Obama and Senator McCain for addressing the number one killer of Americans under the age of 85.
After you have had a chance to learn what both candidates hav...

My name is Eric Perakslis and I am a PhD, kidney cancer survivor and long-time LAF supporter. This year already, I have run the Boston Marathon and the Nike Human race and will also run the New York Marathon all in support of the LAF.
This year I also attended the LIVESTRONG Summit in Columbus, OH where I learned many things about how to be a successful grassroots advocate. And I thought you all might be interested in hearing how I have applied my experiences and learning’s from the Summit into the development of a Dream Team proposal for the STAND UP TO CANCER (SU2C) initiative.
S2UC is breaking ground on many exciting fronts and one of these is the suggested inclusion of cancer advocates onto each Dream Team. Right now the best and brightest are pulling together Dream Team proposal...
