Do you have trouble accessing fulltext of Lane resources when searching Google? Not seeing the Stanford fulltext buttons in PubMed? The Lane Proxy Bookmarklet could help getting fulltext when you come to a resource from outside the Lane website.

Go to the Lane Proxy Bookmarklet page and follow the directions to bookmark it in your browser. Once installed, you can evoke the Lane proxy server and log in to get fulltext just by clicking on the bookmarklet. Most of the time the proxy will help. If you are still having trouble, come the Lane website and try accessing the resource from there. (Source: Lane News)

QR is short for Quick Response. These codes are scanned with your smartphone’s camera using an installed reader app (application). QR codes displayed on signs, posters, flyers, webpages, and computers instantly deliver a variety of information to your smartphone. It’s a quick way to access and capture webpages, contacts, library hours, directions, class schedules, and more. QR code scanner apps are usually free and easy to install on iPhone, Android, Windows7, and Blackberry smartphones. Some new mobile devices may already be equipped with a scanner app.
To scan a QR code, just touch the icon for the reader app on your smartphone; this turns on the camera. Aim at the code as if taking a picture of it, hold the camera steady for a few seconds, and voilà — you have captured the in...

The Stanford Medical History Center has thousands of photographs and images that portray the School’s storied past. Hundreds of selected images can be viewed on our Flickr site.
The Center receives many inquiries about images, and Flickr offers a self-service model by allowing people to review historical images from their home or office.
Also, viewers can add names, dates and other details to images, using Flickr’s tags and comments function, enhancing our collection.
Finally, Flickr enables us to aggregate our images with images from other collections. For example, by partnering with the San Francisco History Center and with the National Museum of Health and Medicine, Stanford images are being seen as part of the history of medicine in San Francisco.

Lane Search

There are two ways to use Lane search:

When you have a PMID, an article title or an author/subject combination
Lane Search drills quickly into Pubmed and Scopus, often delivering the exact citation within 20 seconds.
Then just click the title (Lane Search makes it a link) to get full text if it's available online.
Prove it to yourself: find papers on cancer research authored by Dean Pizzo: type Pizzo cancer in the search field at the top of any Lane webpage.

When you want to see the literature on a specific topic
Lane Search goes beyond Pubmed to deliver a range of references, relevance ranked based on the particular topic. This search ...

Interactive online Team Spaces foster both clinical instruction and information literacy education. In medical practice, clinical questions confronted by practitioners often go unasked and unanswered. The structure of an academic inpatient medicine team offers a unique opportunity for collaborative knowledge management around real patients’ needs. At Lane we developed an online “Team Space” to provide internal medicine teams an interactive mechanism for members, including a clinical librarian, to develop clinical questions generated from patient care, view search and critical-appraisal instruction, and upload related articles for discussion and decision making. The Team Space is also used as a platform for teaching and discussion on rounds. Designed to improve Information Literacy (IL) ...

GoHD is a new EdTech campaign to clearly explain the concepts and benefits of the state-of-the-art technology that will be available in the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge (LKSC). Every projector and screen in the LKSC will have HD resolution (1920x1080), and a wider aspect ratio (16:9), granting new opportunities for higher quality presentations.

The GoHD team at EdTech, along with Dr. Ian Whitmore and students throughout the University, taped the first video of a series called "Busting your content out from behind bars." These videos are intended to introduce important HD concepts and support the faculty who will be teaching in the LKSC.
Tip: Looking for journal titles?

Did you know you can quickly find journal titles with a quick search of the Lane website? This tip will save you time if you normally browse Lane's eJournals page for titles.
***

Use the search box at the top of every page. First, choose "LaneConnex" or "eJournals" from the drop-down to the left of the search box, then simply type the journal title.

***
In many cases, our Lane autosuggest feature will show you titles from the Lane Catalog as you type. For example, if you type "New England" the journal title "New England journal of medicine" will appear; you can select it and then search for it.
***
Usually the journal title you are searching for appears near the top of the search results page. Click on it and you'll get to the home page for that journal.

As you are aware, many 2010 budgets are lower than in 2009. While Lane's 2010 subscriptions budget was held at the 2009 level, its purchasing power has fallen due to continually rising prices for online subscriptions. This situation highlights the importance of faculty accelerating their shift to publishing in Open Access journals.

We were able to limit cancellations to just 55 of the 4,003 journal subscriptions purchased in 2009. Titles of all canceled journals are listed below.

We used an evidence-based approach to identify journals to cancel. Evidence supporting a cancellation decision includes:

	Low use
	Low or no Impact factor
	Lack of robust publication history
	Lack of digital access
Not indexed in major literature databases, e.g., PubMed

Looking to the future, we will make ...

Professor Rita Popat uses Lane's website daily as the primary portal for her research and teaching needs.
As an educator, Rita accesses etextbooks, especially the Access Medicine/Lange series, which includes several titles on Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
To her students, Rita frequently recommends Lane's exam preparation etextbooks, especially those titles on preventive medicine and public health.

Lastly, when Rita is looking for that perfect current research article or disease topic to use in her lectures, she often turns to PubMed and UpToDate for great articles and background information.

The Heart Center/Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Portal goes live!

The Heart Center/CVICU, in collaboration with Lane Medical Library, recently
launched a website of "point-of-care" tools and resources for LPCH clinical
staff. The website, or "portal," contains links to dozens of high-value
guides, calculators, drug resources, training materials and reference
sources, and can be accessed literally at the patient's bedside via COWS
(Computers On Wheels). Links to the website are available via Lane's
webpage, the Heart Center intranet, and, eventually, as desktop icons on
Heart Center computers. (Source: Lane News)

Have you ever wanted a brainier PubMed, one with capabilities similar to those of Web of Science?

If so, have a look at novoseek, an innovative biomedical literature search engine that performs entity identification on PubMed records, thus vastly improving filtering and understanding of search results. It also searches NIH's database of extant grants, CRISP, in a much more elegant manner than CRISP provides.

Lane proudly announces the unveiling of the Bassett Collection of Stereoscopic Images of Human Anatomy. More than 1,500 images and associated diagrams from this definitive dissection collection are freely available for the first time ever and fully searchable from within LaneConnex.

David Lee Bassett, MD, graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1939. Bassett collaborated with William B. Gruber, inventor of the stereoscopic Viewmaster system, and a team of artists to create 3-D, photographic images and accompanying anatomical drawings using dissection innovations pioneered by Dr. Bassett. The stunning quality of these images has dazzled anatomists for almost 50 years. Lane is proud to open up this unique collection to future scholars of the human form.

Great news: the Stanford University Libraries (SULAIR) are running a trial of SCOPUS , a very nice, powerful and integrated search engine for the scientific literature (all fields) and granting databases.

SCOPUS aggregates these data sources, along with conferences, trade publications and patents to present a "unified" view of these results. It needs to be seen to understand its value, as in this example involving miRNA and metastasis.

Among many nice features: SCOPUS has good coverage of conferences, making it particularly handy for getting the latest when you are worried of getting scooped, or are writing a proposal and need to ensure that you are on top of everything.

Note that the trial ends December 20th. There is no need to register within the application.

Wondering where to publish? Journal Impact Factor Trend Graphs are now available directly from the LaneConnex eJournals list, search, and in the Lane catalog for approximately 3,900 titles to help you decide. The journal impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in a journal has been cited in a particular year. To see the links to impact factors, click on this example:

American journal of cardiology

Clicking on the "Impact Factor" link provides convenient access to the latest five years' data for the selected title as well as other useful information.

The Wikipedia entry for Impact Factor explains more about the determination of this value -- one measure of a journal's importance. (Source: Lane News)

Lane's class catalog now features an RSS feed that will keep you up to date with our popular workshops and events.

So what, you might say? Our class list is highly dynamic, with new sessions or workshops added frequently. Workshops also fill quickly, so it pays to be notified, and RSS is a great way to do so unobtrusively.

Want even faster notification for Bioresearch & Biostatistics (B&B) workshops, which often fill-up in hours? Subscribe to the LaneBioresearch twitter feed and get notices via instant messaging on your computer or cell phone -- handy when you're waiting for the centrifuge to spin down. This twitter feed will let you know of B&B workshops the moment they are scheduled, giving you the earliest opportunity to register.

The exhibit appears on the first floor of the library in two adjacent rooms and showcases the scholarship of Dr. Michael Marmor, professor and past chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford.

Dr. Marmor has explored the ways in which changes in eyesight may have affected the styles of a variety of visual artists. This exhibit features Dr. Marmor's investigation of two famous Impressionist painters, Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Claude Monet (1840-1926).

To mount the exhibit, Lane Library collaborated with major art museums in London, Paris, New York, St. Petersburg (Russia), and elsewhere. Antique medical instruments and other historical materials from Lane's collections are also on display. For more...

Recent developments have vastly increased the availability of electronic books (eBooks) provided by the Stanford University Libraries (SULAIR) and the Lane Medical Library:

Since the beginning of the year, Lane has added thousands of eBooks to its catalog, with the total number currently standing at >5,700. These titles cover topics in everything from basic research to clinical areas. Many topics you would not immediately associate with a medical library are also included, such as titles covering software programming, signal processing or optics.
SULAIR has expanded the scope of the Safari Tech Books Online collection to include all titles in the collection, not just selected titles from the (excellent) O'Reilly software suite. Note that access to Safari remains limited to seven simul...

The interfaces for the PROTEOME and TRANSFAC Pro databases have been upgraded substantially, providing much greater ease of use.

Among many improvements:

1. The two applications now use a unified, cleaner interface.

2. A much superior browser-based visualization tool based on Flash is now used by PROTEOME. This means that users will no longer need to install a separate visualizer application in order to analyze the excellent content provided by these databases.

See this document for examples of the above.

However, everything comes with a price, albeit a small one in this case: The first time you log into the new PROTEOME (but not TRANSFAC), you will have to reset your existing user password. This only needs to be done ONCE and must be done from within the Stanford network -- see the...

In honor of the School of Medicine's Centennial, we are very pleased to announced that the newly redesigned eBook Dr. Wilson's Stanford University School of Medicine and the Predecessor Schools: An Historical Perspective is now live. We're hoping that the new website, now driven by XML, will be easier to use by researchers.

The original website was launched in late 1999 with the then-new frames technology on the web. The content represents a long-term research project conducted by John L. Wilson, former acting Dean of the School of Medicine and long-time historian in residence at Lane. Although Dr. Wilson passed away in 2001, his work continues to be a rich resource that highlights not only the School's early history but also Lane's historical and archival collections. In light of the change in law that makes NIH's public access policy mandatory, do you have recommendations for monitoring and ensuring compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy?

Effective April 7, 2008, a new law requires public access to research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Researchers are required to deposit electronic copies of their peer-reviewed manuscripts in PubMed Central, the National Library of Medicine's online archive. Fulltext of the articles will become publicly available and searchable in PubMed Central no later than 12 months after publication in a journal. Official information on the new policy is available at NIH Public Access.

Specific instructions for depositing articles in PubMed Central to comply with the law are available in NIH Manuscript Submission Tutorials. You may be able to avoid this process if the journal automatically deposits submissions to PubMed Center; see the list of journals that do so.

Ever tried downloading an entire patent document from a free service such as the USPTO or EspaceNet? If so, you know that they won't let you download more than one page at time, making it very difficult to obtain a complete patent document.

Starting February 1st, the Lane Library will be offering a service to retrieve complete patent documents to holders of a SUNet ID who are associated with the School of Medicine, free of charge.

Using Lane's DocXpress service, patrons will be able to request a patent and receive a PDF version of the document. See this FAQ for details. (Source: Lane News)

Search results from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Portal and the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC) Library are now provided by the Lane Library's bioresearch metasearch search engine.

The ACM Portal is one of the principal databases for computer and software engineering, drawing on more than 50 years of research published by ACM.

With the increasing cross-disciplinary nature of biomedical research, including such databases in one's searches is essential when investigating questions pertaining to e.g., instrumentation and data analysis methods.

For this reason, we have also added the SLAC Library's collection to metasearch, thus enabling cross-disciplinary searches involving questions related to molecular imaging and nuclear medicine, to take just two random examples.

Lane Medical Library is proud to host an original exhibition highlighting Surviving! magazine. Surviving! was a magazine created by and for cancer patients that was supported by the Stanford Department of Radiation Oncology. It ran from 1983 to 2003. It was an innovative publication in that it was non-commercial, supported by a hospital, and provided a forum for cancer patients to share their stories with one another. It represented a new phase in medical consumers playing an active role in their health care. The exhibit places the publication in the context of changes in cancer care from World War II to the present. (Source: Lane News)

SciVee is a new video service that is best described as "YouTube for scientists." Produced by a collaboration between the National Science Foundation, the Public Library of Science, and the UC San Diego Supercomputing Center, this innovative service lets scientists upload their papers, accompanied by video or audio files that can be synchronized to the content of the paper. SciVee also lets users rate, tag, and comment on videos. Because uploaded content is freely available to the public, only papers published in open access journals are eligible for upload.

Engineering Village is the foremost literature database for all aspects of the engineering literature. With the increasingly cross-disciplinary nature of biomedical research, it is essential to include such databases in one's searches when investigating questions pertaining to e.g., instrumentation and data analysis methods.

Fortunately, the Bioresearch Metasearch engine now features results from Engineering Village as part of its search universe.

Look under Fulltext Article Search in this live search example for engineering publications involving microarray research, and start benefiting from the competitive benefits provided by Stanford's licensing of this commercial database!

The US Department of Defense (DOD) is a major funder of biomedical research, yet many researchers wouldn't know where to find the fruits of that research, since much of it cannot be found in e.g., PubMed.

Fortunately, the Bioresearch Metasearch engine now features results from DOD's Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) databases as part of its search universe.

Look under Patents & Technologies in this live search for the DOD's biomedical research involving microarrays.

Can't attend MATLAB workshop? You can still log into the live webcast...

Good news for overflow attendees of Introduction to MATLAB For Life Sciences: In order to provide at least some of the benefits of this workshop to those who cannot attend, the Lane Library will be webcasting it live using WebEx.

While this won't enable remote attendees to take part in the exercises, it will at least enable them to attend the lecture...

WebEx attendees should note that:
1. a computer with speakers will be needed in order to get audio, as we will be using Voice-over-IP (VOIP).
2. the WebEx client should be installed prior to the workshop to avoid wasting time getting set up.
3. For simplicity, we won't be allowing questions from WebEx attendees (which would triple the class size and be too unwieldy)

Here's how to attend:
