Introduced in 1960, The MeSH Browser is an online vocabulary look-up aid available for use with MeSH(Medical Subject Headings). It is designed to help quickly locate descriptors of possible interest and to show the hierarchy in which descriptors of interest appear. Virtually complete MeSH records are available, including the scope notes, annotations, entry vocabulary, history notes, allowable qualifiers, etc. There are nearly 23,000 descriptors in MeSH. In addition to these headings, there are more than 151,000 headings called Supplementary Concept Records.[da] (Source: MCR News)

ToxMystery is the National Library of Medicine’s new, interactive learning site for 7-10 year old kids. "Toxie" the cat helps children locate hidden environmental hazards in their surroundings. It provides a fun, game-like experience while introducing potential environmental health hazards sometimes found in the home. ToxMystery’s "Parent Resources" page provides more detailed information about everyday environmental hazards that can be harmful to one’s health. A "For Teachers" page contains more than ten downloadable activity pages that can be used in elementary school classrooms. ToxMystery has been enthusiastically tested by real kids![da] (Source: MCR News)

Heads up for NLM Year End Processing

Following annual year-end processing two changes will occur. All of the MeSH Category V terms will be identified as Publication Type (PT) in the MEDLINE citations and the NLM Catalog records instead of MeSH. Examples of Category V terms are "Comparative Study" and "Research Support".
Approximately 86% of the OLDMEDLINE citations have had all of their keywords mapped to current MeSH. This means their MeSH headings will be maintained with the upcoming 2007 version of MeSH. As a part of the 2006 MEDLINE year-end processing activities, these records will be designated as MEDLINE records.
For details on both of these activities see the NLM Technical Bulletin September-October 2006 issue.

Imagine you need access to published Government information and you need it fast. If you were holding a book volume, you could see where the information originated, who wrote it and when. In a digital world, how would you know for sure the document on your screen had not been altered since the author wrote it? You might also wonder when it was last updated. The U.S. Government Printing Office took a major step towards ensuring the American public has a one-stop site to access published Government information that is authentic, version-controlled and permanently-available by announcing the selection of Harris Corporation to help develop a world-class Future Digital System.

"In an extraordinary letter of protest, representatives for 10,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientists are asking Congress to stop the Bush administration from closing the agency’s network of technical research libraries." Read the story at Public Emplyees for Environmental Responsibility. The article includes a demonstration of return on investment (ROI) saying, "EPA internal studies show that providing full library access saves an estimated 214,000 hours in professional staff time worth some $7.5 million annually, an amount far larger than the total agency library budget of $2.5 million." For assistance with developing an ROI project for your library call or email Betsy Kelly (bk) (Source: MCR News)

A librarian in a small medical library in central New York state discusses how he sells RSS as a solution for physicians and other clinicians to stay on top of new developments in their field.
NCBI and other NLM Divisions are working to make the wealth of information in the Entrez databases more accessible to PubMed users. AbstractPlus is now available from the Display pull-down menu. AbstractPlus is an enhanced Abstract view that automatically shows the first 5 for each PubMed citation. In upcoming months, searchers will encounter increased options designed to lead them to additional Entrez resources. NLM hopes PubMed users will try this and future enhancements and provide feedback if they lead to useful information.

A new meta-search and clustering tool for toxicology and environmental health information resources is available from the NLM. ToxSeek is a meta-search and clustering engine that enables simultaneous searching of many different toxicology and environmental health information resources on the World Wide Web. ToxSeek uses natural language processing and artificial intelligence to retrieve, integrate, rank, and present search results as coherent and dynamic sets. ToxSeek's "results clustering" feature helps users to more easily identify particular concepts. These clusters are created from what is retrieved in the original query, and can be useful in uncovering a specific concept or focus for more in-depth searching.
Do you collect stories about how the library helps your users, patients and their families? A columnist at the St. Louis Post Dispatch did a great job for us reporting that a father/pediatrician used the medical library at Washington University to find treatment options for his child's medulloblastoma. The positive outcomes are recounted in this story. Articles like these offer us a terrific opportunity to get the word out - through letters to the editor, to the reporters and to our institutional leaders.
