MCR Social Media Changes

The NN/LM MCR is changing how it uses social media. The biggest changes are in the use of Twitter and Facebook. Follow us on Twitter and you will find Tweets, 2-3 per day, intended for not only health sciences librarians but also for the health practitioners interested in health information access news. MCR Tweets will tend to be breaking news related, will have a short shelf-live, and we hope you will reTweet them on to your constituents. NN/LM MCR Facebook Wall Post will be more for the health sciences librarian. Wall posts, 1-2 per day, will also be health information access related but will solicit discussion via your comments or likes.

What is the value of your library – journals, books and databases? Do you know? Has it changed? With the start of the new year, it’s a great time to look back to 2011 and determine the value of your library. Easy to use calculators are available at http://nnlm.gov/mcr/evaluation/calculator.html.
It’s also a great time to take the extra step and submit your data. You can contribute your values to the collected valuation data and increase the knowledge of what values libraries bring to their institutions.
If you have questions or need help, please contact Barb Jones (jonesbarb@health.missouri.edu) or Betsy Kelly (betsy.kelly@wustl.edu). (bbj) (Source: Midcontinental Region News)

Thanksgiving Day and Family Health History Day

Thanksgiving Day is also Family Health History Day. Since 2004, the Surgeon General has encouraged Americans to talk about, and to write down, the health problems that seem to run in their family. Learning about their family’s health history may help ensure a longer, healthier future together.
See http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory/ and the “Before You Start” tab for some specific tips for getting started (available in English and Spanish) [HHS.gov]. (Source: Midcontinental Region News)

On Wednesday, December 7, 2011, the NN/LM MCR will be having a Technology Sandbox Session* where we will be “playing” with Prezi, a presentation application. Go to http://prezi.com to sign yourself up for a free account.
I recommend that you pre-sign up for a public (the free one) account prior to the Sandbox session so we can jump right in.
We have tested access to Prezi on some of the most restrictive hospital servers and there were no problems (thanks Kitty and Dick!).
To get an idea of what you can do, check out a Prezi presentation I did on the Technology Project.

If you want to see Prezi in the hands of a 15 year old and one that puts mine to shame, check out a presentation my niece did on transcendentalism ...

This year, libraries in Colorado, Wyoming, and Kansas have either been closed or downsized. By our standards, the librarians were performing professionally appropriate services within their hospitals. We’re concerned. At the next Breezing Along with the RML, Barb Jones will review the findings of the Hospital Library Evaluation Scan, which was conducted earlier this year. This scan is designed to track the organizational positioning and status of the library within hospitals in the MCR. Following the scan Barb Jones and Claire Hamasu will facilitate a sharing session on hospital libraries on the following questions:
1. Who controls the existence of your library at your hospital?
2. How would this person(s) describe your services?
3. How would this person(s) describe the impact o...

The National Library of Medicine has launched a new search box auto-complete feature for MedlinePlus, MedlinePlus en español, and the NLM main Web site. The auto-complete feature suggests relevant terms and phrases as users begin typing, provides accurate spellings for search terms, and guides users to relevant Web site content. Auto-complete suggestions appear for search boxes in site-wide headers, as well as on search results pages. An NLM Technical Bulletin article describes the enhancement in more detail. The Healing Totem Journey is a blog produced by the National Library of Medicine to chronicle and celebrate the creation, journey and installation of a new work of art. The Library has commissioned Master Carver Jewell Praying Wolf James, a member of the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Indian Nation, located in Bellingham, Washington, to carve a healing totem to be erected in front of the Library in October 2011, in conjunction with the opening of a new exhibition, Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness.
http://1.usa.gov/oG1CZ6
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced it is seeking input on its proposed oversight approach for certain mobile applications specific to medicine or health care called mobile medical applications (“apps”) that are designed for use on smartphones and other mobile computing devices. This approach encourages the development of new apps, focuses only on a select group of applications and will not regulate the sale or general consumer use of smartphones or tablets.

Types of medical apps the FDA will regulate http://bit.ly/rmQiFQ
FDA won’t regulate these apps, for now http://bit.ly/q7kVHp [scb] (Source: Midcontinental Region News)
