According to wikipedia: Protozoa are unicellular eukaryotes, (singular protozoan). While there is no exact definition of the term, most scientists use protozoan to refer to a unicellular heterotrophic protist, like amoebas and ciliates. Some protozoa have life stages alternating between proliferative stages (eg trophozoites) and dormant cysts. As cysts, protozoa can survive harsh conditions, such as exposure to extreme temperatures and harmful chemicals, or long periods without access to nutrients, water, or oxygen for a period of time. Being a cyst enables parasitic species to survive outside of the host, and allows their transmission from one host to another. When protozoa are in the form of trophozoites (Greek, tropho=to nourish), they actively feed and grow. The process by which the prot...

Movie-making, short and long, online and on-screen, private and public, will be the most important communications process of the 21st century and its democratization is a massive business opportunity. Our revolutionary approach to movie-making builds on an almost universally held skill—typing. You type something; we turn it into a movie. On the web and on the desktop."What do you think? Cool, isn't it?!Thanks for reading :)

Not long ago I shared a documentary film with you titled "The Half Ton Man". I just checked on wikipedia to see what happened to the guy and this is what I found:"Patrick D. Deuel (born 28 March 1962), of Nebraska, was one of the heaviest people in the world. He was the subject of the documentary “Half Ton Man”. Deuel is a former restaurant manager. At one point, he had not left his house, or even his bed, in 7 years. He stands at 5'9" (175 centimeters). At his peak he weighed 1,072 pounds (486 kg); at the time, the only scale that could be used to weigh him was a livestock scale. He was so enormous that his bedroom wall had to be cut out to extract him from his home. Then, he was rushed to a South Dakota hospital in an ambulance with extra-wide doors and a ramp-and-winch system th...

I am tired of hearing pseudoscience, false claims, hoax, scams, and of people making money on the back of laymen that do not know any better. One of the latest pseudo scientific claims I have heard of may lead some people to something that is called Orthorexia nervosa. I will not dwell on the false claims of "rawfoodism" and the such here. I just want to share with you what orthorexia nervosa is:"Orthorexia, or orthorexia nervosa is a term coined by Steven Bratman, a Colorado MD, to denote an eating disorder characterized by excessive focus on eating healthy foods. In rare cases, this focus may turn into a fixation so extreme that it can lead to severe malnutrition or even death.Bratman coined the term in 1997 from the Greek orthos, "correct or right", and orexis for "appetite". If not for the interesting story, you should watch it for the outstanding acting of Al pacino and Russel Crowe.About "The Insider":The Insider is a 1999 film that tells the true story of a 60 Minutes television series exposé of the tobacco industry, as seen through the eyes of a real tobacco executive, Jeffrey Wigand. The 60 Minutes story originally aired in November 1995 in an altered form because CBS' then-owner, Laurence Tisch, objected. The story was later aired on February 4, 1996.
HM (also known as "H.M." and "Henry M.," born 1926 in Connecticut) is an anonymous memory-impaired patient who has been widely studied since the late 1950s and has been very important in the development of theories that explain the link between brain function and memory, and in the development of cognitive neuropsychology, a branch of psychology that studies brain injury to infer normal psychological function. He is still alive today and resides in a care institute located in Hartford, Connecticut, where he remains in ongoing investigation.HM suffered from intractable epilepsy that has been often—though inconclusively—attributed to a bicycle accident at the age of nine.
Where can I read and learn about statistics? Do you recommend any sites, blogs, podcasts, e-courses, e-tutors?According to Science Daily:"Health statistics fill today’s information environment, but even most doctors, who must make daily decisions and recommendations based on numerical data - for instance, to calculate the risks of a certain drug or surgical intervention, or to inform a patient of the possible benefits versus harms of cancer screening - lack the basic statistical literacy they require to make such decisions effectively...Physicans are not immune. The authors of the report cite several startling studies showing the inability of doctors to accurately interpret data from cancer screenings or other test results, when the data were presented in the typical form of conditional ...

I just came back from my one-month vacation. I was abroad all this time. I met with my family and some friends that I haven't seen for a few years. I spent my spare time reading any non-medical book I put my hand on. I will share my reading list with all of you soon. In fact you can have a look at it now if you are my friend on Facebook. It felt great to read something other than medicine for a change. It was refreshing and I learned a lot. I watched the third season of ER too. And went out for dinner almost every night at a fancy restaurant. As you can see, nothing outstanding. Just a regular family vacation.I will be posting regularly very soon.Have a nice day.

Why learn Spanish?1. Communicate with 350 million native Spanish speakers worldwide. 2. Communicate with Spanish-speaking people at home. If you live in the US, it is possible to maintain almost daily contact with native Spanish speakers in many cities or even in rural areas. This is certainly the case in the many states bordering Mexico, or such states as Florida and New York where many immigrants of Cuban ancestry reside. Even if your home state is not located in one of these areas, there is still a great likelihood of finding Spanish-speakers close to where you live. As of 1995, 10% of all people living in the US were of Hispanic descent. In the past 10 years, this number has continued to increase. Perhaps this is why 53% of students learning languages in US colleges and universities...

Out of all the medical TV shows out there I like ER the most. I have watched the entire First and Third seasons till now (each season is ~ 22 episodes).ER is an Emmy Award-winning American medical drama series created by novelist Michael Crichton and airing on NBC. It is set primarily in the emergency room of fictional County General Hospital in Cook County, Chicago. It is produced by Constant c Productions and Amblin Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television Production, Inc. ER is NBC's second longest-running drama (after Law & Order), and, at 14 seasons, the longest-running American primetime medical drama of all time.It premiered on September 19, 1994 and has been aired on Thursday nights at 10:00 for its entire run.
After starting an account at www.flickr.com and falling in love with it, I noticed that you can make groups where you can share content (images and videos) and discuss subjects of interest. And you know me, I would not lose a chance to give it a try! So, I did. I just started this new group called "Medical Public Domain" where I intend to collect good quality medical images that are free of any copyright restrictions. You can join for free! So be sure to! If you already have an account on flickr you have no excuse! lolNo, seriously, don't you remeber those nights where you were searching on google for that xray or CT or microscopic bacteria image?? What you have never done that? What, it is only me? Then I guess I am from Mars!Anyhow, I think this would probably make it easier for someone ...

Doubt is Their Product by David Michaels"David Michaels reveals how the tobacco industry's duplicitous tactics spawned a multimillion dollar industry that is dismantling public health safeguards. Product defense consultants, he argues, have increasingly skewed the scientific literature, manufactured and magnified scientific uncertainty, and influenced policy decisions to the advantage of polluters and the manufacturers of dangerous products. To keep the public confused about the hazards posed by global warming, second-hand smoke, asbestos, lead, plastics, and many other toxic materials, industry executives have hired unscrupulous scientists and lobbyists to dispute scientific evidence about health risks. In doing so, they have not only delayed action on specific hazards, but they have const...

On May 15, 2008 Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine announced that it is providing all its students with full tuition scholarships, beginning with July’s incoming class."Students currently enrolled in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine will receive additional scholarship funding to offset 50% of the difference between past tuition paid and the financial aid they’ve already received. Cleveland Clinic will support the full tuition scholarships through existing endowment income and clinical operations.
For the past year I have been using Firefox for the majority of my browsing. I liked it but it was obvious that it had many problems. For example sometimes after being online for a while the keyboard buttons used to get mixed up; if I type A B C D E it shows on the screen W S L K R and as you can imagine that is very annoying! so I had to close all my tabs and start all over for the keys to straighten up. Another thing that used to happen is these small "panic attacks" where the browser stops responding and again I have to close the browser and restart it.Anyhow, just yesterday, I noticed that Google lounched their own Web Browser "Chrome". I have been using it for several hours now and it seems pretty decent. The thing you will notice immediatly, that I presonlly love, is how large the in...
