Current news items, with text and images, are highlighted as the slideshow progresses. With this new addition in the center of the page, we will include more than one website or database as well as funding announcements, updates from the National Library of Medicine, and medical news.
We also tweaked the colors – made them more vibrant. We hope you find our revised home page more informative and appealing.

Share Your Story: The Importance of Being a Team Player
At a previous job, I was not funded to go to MLA for many years until one year when my boss administrative assistant left. In the VA it often takes a while for positions to be filled and this was one of those times. My boss was the Associate Chief of Staff for Education and as such had responsibility for paying residents, determining who was going to be paid for travel, etc. He asked me if I would consider doing the most important things that needed to be done. Because I had a technician who could handle the day to day work of the library I agreed. I still did the searches, and all the administrative things but I spent several hours a day in my boss’ office. I learned a lot about what he did and even learned how to use Excel – m...

Share Your Story: LSU Shreveport Health Sciences Library
What’s the value of the LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) Health Sciences Library? It’s priceless! Our librarians always find new ways to serve the institution and the community. Through a NNLM funded award, our librarians designed a program to educate children about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, reaching about 1,500 children so far. The program consisted of:

A website with health information, games, and activities for children selected by LSUHS librarians.
Story hours at local libraries and an area science museum that have so far focused on nutrition, exercise, germ prevention, heart health, and sun safety. Librarians select and read the stories, and develop companion activities and support materials.

The MedPrint program is open to all U.S. libraries in DOCLINE.
Approximately 250 journals selected from Abridged Index Medicus® (AIM) and scanned PubMed Central® (PMC) titles will serve as the first set of materials to preserve in print.
Health Literacy Month October 2011

Health Literacy has been defined as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” (Healthy People 2010). Yet, millions of Americans have difficulty with reading and understanding basic health information, such as interpreting over-the-counter drug labels and reading a chart to determine a child’s immunization schedule.
Founded as a grassroots initiative in 1999 by Helen Osborne, Health Literacy Month is a time for organizations and individuals worldwide to promote the importance of understandable health information. Since its beginning, there have been hundreds of awareness-raising events held across the U.S. and around the world.
To spotlight this observance...

Systematic reviews have been scattered widely on content providers’ websites without being centrally collected. The PubMed Health initiative is gathering them together within a single searchable resource. The review and review summaries now in PubMed Health account for perhaps one-third of the good quality systematic reviews published by public agencies and journals worldwide.

Last year the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Library – New Orleans received one of three Historical Preservation and Digitization Awards from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region. Their project was entitled: The Digitization of the Aristides Agramonte Collection on Yellow Fever.
The story of the Aristides Agramonte yellow fever collection at LSU Health Sciences Center – New Orleans is a sad one. Dr. Aristides Agramonte was a member of the US Army Yellow Fever expedition to Cuba, which gave the final proofs of the relation of the mosquito to the transmission of yellow fever. He had just accepted a professorship at the fledgling LSU School of Medicine when he died suddenly of a ‘heart affectation’ in August of 1931. His extensive pe...

According to the findings released Thursday by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, whites aged 18 to 64 were almost twice as likely as Hispanics to search for health information online.
Other key findings from the 2009 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) include:

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) Bird Library has digitized some of its collections through funds from a Library Technology Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region (NN/LM SCR).
These include items from the University’s College of Nursing, one of its earliest Deans (Dr. Long) from the College of Medicine, and several medical instrument collections. Working with these materials certainly provided a new perspective and value to being a medical librarian!

With this award we were able to train staff, experiment with new scanning methods such as stereoscopic and rotational views, and provide publicity to highlight our collections in unique ways.

On September 21, 1967 the storm moved into the mouth of the Rio Grande, and inundated South Texas with heavy rainfall. The memories of the hurricane and its aftermath were still fresh in the minds of many who attended the May 6th opening of a photography exhibit which chronicles the response of health professionals and local volunteers to refugees dis...

CHEMM enables first responders & other healthcare providers and planners to plan for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of mass-casualty incidents involving accidental or terrorist chemical releases. CHEMM is available online at http://chemm.nlm.nih.gov/.
As a web-based resource, CHEMM can be downloaded in advance, so that it would be available during an event if the Internet ...

Are you a librarian? Do you work in public health? If so, you should consider attending the American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting this year in Washington, DC from October 29 – November 2, 2011. This year’s theme is Healthy Communities Promote Healthy Minds & Bodies.
This should be a particularly great year to attend as a librarian, since librarians do a lot of important community work. Our public health impact can be seen both directly through health literacy projects and outreach as well as indirectly through education of future nurses, doctors, and public health workers. And, there is funding available through the Sewell Fund to help subsidize costs of attendance at the meeting!
What can you expect from attending APHA? Librarian attendees from the past 10 years...

Last year, more people died than were born in nearly one-quarter of all U.S. counties, a new study shows.

This trend, known as natural decrease, is the result of younger people moving away, as well as decreases in fertility levels. Researchers from the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) also found that rural areas are particularly hard hit by natural population decrease, which is taking a toll on local schools, hospitals and other family services.
The study showed that last year, “24 percent of all U.S. counties experienced natural decrease. And, for the first time in U.S. history, deaths now exceed births in an entire state [West Virginia],” Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer with the Carsey Institute and professor of sociology at UNH, said in a unive...

On June 5, 2011, the United States marked “30 Years of AIDS.” It was on that date in 1981 that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) published a report on the first cases of AIDS in the U.S. This was the first official report of what would become known as the “AIDS epidemic.”
Today, an estimated 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV, and nearly one out of five people living with HIV do not know it, according to the CDC. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) AIDS.gov program has compiled a timeline highlighting some of these key milestones [http://aids.gov/thirty-years-of-aids/].
While research for a cure is still under way, HIV testing is especially critical. On June ...

The CDC has created a page of resources for use in providing messages about what people can do to protect themselves and their family during a natural disaster: http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/psa/.
Included on the page is a new toolkit of prepared cell phone text messages that support state and local emergency managers in disaster response.
Local and state agencies register their interest in using the toolkit by providing contact information to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); they will then receive alerts and updates as the content expands to include health tips for additional types of disasters. Agencies can register by email: publichealthemergency@hhs.gov.

On Thursday, June 2, First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled the federal government’s new food icon, MyPlate, to serve as a reminder to help consumers make healthier food choices. MyPlate is a new generation icon intended to prompt consumers to think about building a healthy plate at meal times and to seek more information to help them do that by going to www.ChooseMyPlate.gov/. The new MyPlate icon emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups.
MyPlate will replace the MyPyramid image as an easy-to-understand visual cue to help consumers adopt healthy eating habits consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. MyPyramid will remain available to interested health professionals and nutrition educators in a special sec...

Each year, there are numerous research proposals for promising new treatments that make their way through a peer-review process but do not receive funding, although they have the potential to make significant contribution to scientific discovery. The National Health Council (NHC), with input from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has developed the database Health Research Funding to bring these projects and researchers together with patient advocacy organizations and other funding sources.
The NIH receives more than 50,000 grant applications each year. Each application is peer reviewed, and about half are deemed to have scientific merit and could be considered for funding. These applications are then scored and ranked. Of these grant applications that the NIH deems worthy, fewer tha...

On December 1, 2011 the NLM Gateway will be gone as we know it. All but one database, Meeting Abstracts, can be searched through their own interfaces. NLM has found that users prefer using the database interfaces to the Gateway. As a result, NLM Gateway will be discontinued and a pilot project site from the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) will be created. The new site will focus on Meeting Abstracts and Health Services Research Projects in Progress (HSRProj).

From the National Library of Medicine:
The “National Maximum Charge” that limited Resource Libraries to charging $11 for DOCLINE interlibrary loan was recently removed as a requirement for Resource Libraries in the NN/LM contracts for 2011-2016. The change was effective May 1, 2011. As needed, Resource Libraries may raise ILL fees to recover costs. Primary Access Libraries and Other libraries were already able to charge fees necessary for cost recovery. As always, all charges and provided services must comply with the copyright law.
NLM recently removed the $11 limit because we had received multiple requests from Resource Libraries who stated they were unable to recover their costs at $11 per article. Additionally, Resource Libraries were permitted to charge above the $...

Right on schedule, hurricane season begins on June 1 and lasts until November 30th. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted an above-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic basin this year. Last week, the Office of the President stressed the need for individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and families to prepare emergency plans, create emergency supply kits, and learn evacuation routes (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/05/20/presidential-proclamation-national-hurricane-preparedness-week).
Several organizations have resources to assist with these preparations. Some include widgets which can be used on library or other organizational websites to quickly link to valuable information.

The annual DOCLINE Update was conducted by Maria Collins at the 2011 Medical Library Association Meeting. The most immediate announcement affecting libraries concerned the national maximum cost. Starting May 1, 2011, Resource Libraries are no longer limited by the national maximum of $11. They may now charge based on their cost recovery needs. The removal of the nation maximum was implemented due to the large number of requests received by NLM from Resource Libraries to increase the maximum.
For more information on the DOCLINE Update, read the MLA blog posting by Katie Zybeck. Slides from the DOCLINE update will be posted on the NLM website in the near future. (Source: Network News)

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has recently announced an initiative to promote utilization of promotores de salud as a means of strengthening outreach and education on the availability of health services and insurance coverage to underserved Hispanic/Latino communities.
Promotores, who are sometimes known as community health workers, peer leaders, patient navigators or health advocates, typically work in their own communities to convey information to their neighbors and other community members on health and wellness, the availability of support services and access to health services. Promotores have become increasingly active in U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities for the past 50 years and for longer in some Latin American countries.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers assistance to caregivers. Caregivers provide a valuable service for Veterans and are “partners” with the VA in providing excellent health care. Caregivers allow Veterans to remain in their own home and also play a important role in supporting Veterans who are hospitalized or living outside their home.
VA now provides additional support to eligible post-9/11 Veterans who elect to receive their care in a home setting from a primary Family Caregiver. Eligible primary Family Caregivers can receive a stipend, training, mental health services, and access to health insurance if they are not already under a health care plan.

Last week Google added the Cherokee language to the list of languages supported by the search engine interface. The Cherokee language which is endangered, first became a written language in the early 19th century. Today only about 20,000 members of the Cherokee Nation still speak the language.
Google now provides a way for Cherokee speakers to convert their Google search interface to Cherokee and provides an onscreen Cherokee keyboard. To change the Google interface to another language, use the Language Tools link on the main page. Look for the section marked “Use the Google Interface in Your Language.” With the addition of the Cherokee language, Google now sports the use of 146 languages.
With the addition of this language to the Google search interface, perhaps more people wi...

National Public Health Week continues until the end of the week with the theme Safety is No Accident: Live Injury-Free.
The focus for Wednesday was Injury Prevention at Play. It only takes a moment for an injury to occur – a fall off a bicycle, an injured ankle playing tennis, a concussion after a football tackle. But it also takes just a moment to prevent recreation-related injuries and make ourselves and communities safer. Injuries are not “accidents” and with simple steps, we can stop them before they happen.
Thursday’s focus is On the Move. Suggestions include:

Wear a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short.
Make sure children are buckled up in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt.
Be cautious when crossing the street or road. Use sidewalks and avoid jaywalking.

A new National Library of Medicine Traveling Exhibition Life and Limb: The Toll of the Civil War is now available for institutions to borrow.
More than three million soldiers fought in the war from 1861-1865. More than half a million died, and almost as many were wounded but survived. Hundreds of thousands were permanently disabled by injuries or surgery, which saved lives by sacrificing limbs. These men served as a symbol of the fractured nation and remained a stark reminder of the costs of the conflict for long after the war. This exhibition brings their experiences to light.
Life and Limb describes the damage caused by the weapons of the time, the treatment of wounds, and their consequences for the young men who survived. The narrative highlights aspects of life after the amputation of ...

A new set of reports rank the overall health of nearly every county in the nation, confirming the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income, environment and access to health care play in how healthy people are and how long they live.
Published online at http://www.countyhealthrankings.org by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the County Health Rankings look at a variety of measures that affect health, such as high school graduation rates, access to healthier foods, air pollution levels, income, and rates of smoking, obesity and teen births.

How can you describe that impact when many other departments are competing for the same, limited funds?
