The European Union Childhood Obesity Project was set up in 2001 to test the hypothesis that the higher risk of obesity seen in formula-fed infants [ndash] as compared with breastfed babies [ndash] is a result of the higher protein content in infant formulas than in breastmilk. The infants participating in the study were recruited between 2002 and 2004 and followed up for 2 years. The first results of the study were published earlier this year. After 2 years, the weight-for-length and body mass index of the infants fed the lower-protein formula were significantly lower than those fed the higher-protein formulas. Extrapolating from previous studies suggests that the children in the higher-protein group have a 13% increased risk of being obese in adolescence compared with those in the lower-p...

Breastfeeding provides the optimum nutrition for young infants and one of the aims of the new UK-World Health Organization growth charts is to encourage healthcare professionals and parents to see breastfed infants' growth rate as the norm. Formula-fed infants gain weight more quickly than breastfed infants in the first year of life, and this may be because of the greater quantity of protein in infant formula. Childhood obesity rates are increasing and obesity is probably the result of a multitude of factors. Observational studies have indicated that rapid growth in infancy may contribute to a later risk of obesity. New randomised controlled studies have shown that lower protein levels in infant formula can slow infants' weight gain, and this may offer short- and long-term health benefits....

The development of childhood dietary preferences and their implications for later adult health

The food fed to infants and young children not only determines their health in childhood but also predicts the foods that they eat in later life. Because adult dietary preferences are partially formed in childhood, the childhood diet inevitably contributes to the long-term health of the individual. We are all aware of preferences that have endured since childhood, and that our dietary habits only change if we have reason to adapt them, perhaps for a healthier lifestyle. Adopting a healthy diet in adulthood is likely to be considerably easier if we have developed healthy food preferences during our childhood. Current information shows that toddlers are fed diets high in fat, sugar and salt and that mothers are confused about what toddlers should be eating. A healthy diet for toddlers combin...

There is evidence to suggest that exercise-induced dehydration can have a negative impact on exercise performance, and restoration of fluid balance should be achieved after exercise. It is equally well known that muscle glycogen must be restored after exercise if subsequent performance is not to be negatively affected. Sports drinks are ideally placed to fill both these roles. However, while muscle glycogen restoration can be comfortably achieved by consumption of solid food, the same is not true for restoration of hydration status. Clear evidence is available that drinking during exercise can improve performance, provided that the exercise is of sufficient duration for the drink to be emptied from the stomach and absorbed in the intestine. Generally, drinking plain water is better than dr...

Probiotics are live microorganisms [ndash] mainly bacteria [ndash] which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. There is rising interest in this area, but reports in the media are often conflicting. The aim of this review is to consider the current evidence on the effects of probiotics on health, focusing on gut-related health issues and the immune system, with the objective to provide a clearer picture of whether and how probiotics can be beneficial for health. The outcomes of this review are based on more than 100 original studies, meta-analyses and systematic reviews. A variety of different strains have been used in studies on probiotics, and it is important to remember that the effectiveness of probiotics is strain-specific, which means that each sin...

The objective of the present study is to assess the potential effect on nutrient intakes in the Dutch population after replacing normally consumed foods in diets with foods that are eligible to carry a Choices stamp. Usual nutrient intakes were calculated using deterministic modelling with the Monte Carlo risk assessment model. Inputs for the modelling were food intakes (Dutch Food Consumption Survey 2003) and composition of foods from the Dutch food composition database. For a selection of nutrients, three scenarios were calculated and compared: (1) nutrient intakes 'as measured', based on the original Dutch Food Consumption Survey data; (2) replacement of all non-complying foods, where possible, with a food complying with the Choices criteria; and, because this could lead to a decreased ...

Energy restriction is the only known robust dietary measure effective in increasing lifespan across a wide variety of species. Our current research indicates a role for the best-established dietary mimetic of energy restriction, the red grape polyphenol resveratrol, in altering information carried by DNA at a level superimposed on the information provided by the sequence of bases, known as epigenetic marking. These effects appear to share a common pathway with some of the effects of energy restriction that involve the protein Sirt1. Preliminary observations made in human intestinal cells reveal that isoflavones found in the soyabean may share some of these functional properties and so highlight the potential for a diet rich in these compounds to promote healthy ageing.
In 2007, the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research produced food, nutrition and physical activity recommendations for personal and public health goals for reducing cancer risk. A companion publication, Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention, addresses the external influences on people's eating and physical activity habits over a lifetime and evaluates potential actions to change these behaviours. The Policy Report makes recommendations for policies and actions that will help achieve the public health goals for reducing cancer risk. The recommendations are addressed to policy-makers and decision-takers at international, national and local level. These recommendations, if implemented, will help influence and change the lifestyle choices that people make, thereby ...

Over recent years, consumers have shown an increasing interest in health and wellbeing, with many wanting food and drink products that are healthy and nutritious, yet fit in with busy lifestyles. Fruit juice is one beverage that has seen a dramatic increase in consumer purchasing since the 1970s, and is now consumed by nearly half the UK population. While the beneficial effects of consuming diets rich in fruit and vegetables are well documented, the specific health effects of consuming fruit juice are less so. Further, the role of fruit juice in conditions such as obesity has also recently come under scrutiny, due to questions over how liquid calories affect subsequent energy intake. Limitations in the literature in this area include a lack of studies looking at different types of fruit ju...

However, knowledge of both the compilation and the limitations of food composition databases, which contain information on the concentrations of nutrients in food, is beneficial to ensure that users understand how to utilise the data appropriately. This guide provides background information on the importance of food composition data, and then explains the processes involved in producing and compiling these data. It then offers guidance on some of the key issues that users should be familiar with when using andmanipulating food composition data. Suggestions for ...

The success of such strategies is heavily reliant upon families recognising and becoming engaged with the issue. It is therefore important to understand parents' perceptions of excess weight in children and which preventive strategies would be most acceptable to them. The present paper describes the development of a focus group approach designed to explore these important research questions and illustrates techniques that can be readily implemented and replicated to explore complex and sensitive issues. Some of the potential difficulties of focus group research are also detailed, together with suggestions for successfully overcoming these obstacles. It is al...

Increasingly, scientists are debating whether photochemical synthesis of vitamin D in Western countries is adequate, and whether dietary intakes can plug the gap between endogenous vitamin D production and requirements, particularly in young and older populations. The debate is driven by the plethora of evidence suggesting that, in addition to its important role in maintaining bone health, vitamin D may be involved in ameliorating cell ageing and preventing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immune dysfunction and some cancers. Observational evidence from different populations suggests a significant degree of vitamin D insufficiency, often defined as plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] (Source: Nutrition Bulletin)

There is a well-established requirement for the UK population to reduce the saturates content of its diet from around 13.3% energy (E) intake to 10% E intake (including alcohol) and to improve fat quality by increasing monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) intake. Canola (rapeseed) oil is one of the richest sources of dietary MUFAs and is a good source of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) alpha-linolenic acid. Recent advances using conventional plant breeding have led to the development of high-oleic canola, which has an increased level of MUFA and greater oxidative stability, making it suitable for a wide range of culinary purposes including frying. Around 7% of dietary saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake in adults derives from potatoes (fried potatoes and chips) and savoury snacks,...

Conclusions In the context of the rising prevalence of obesity around the world, it is vital to understand how energy balance and bodyweight are controlled. The ability to balance energy intake and expenditure is critical to survival, and sophisticated physiological mechanisms have developed in order to do this, including the control of appetite. Satiation and satiety are part of the body's appetite control system and are involved in limiting energy intake. Satiation is the process that causes one to stop eating; satiety is the feeling of fullness that persists after eating, suppressing further consumption, and both are important in determining total energy intake. Satiation and satiety are controlled by a cascade of factors that begin when a food or drink is consumed and continues as it e...

Year on year the number of Europeans classed as overweight or obese is increasing. With this rise in obesity comes an associated increase in the number of people suffering from the metabolic syndrome. Over the past five years Lipgene has investigated the association between diet, genetics and the metabolic syndrome, in a bid to help better understand the possible causes behind this disease and the most effective treatment strategies. Findings from this project indicate that by modifying the fatty acid content of commonly consumed food products, including milk, meat and rapeseed oil, thousands of lives could be saved across Europe each year.
Our understanding of the significant role that long-chain fatty acids play in maintaining health and deterring the progression of disease is rapidly expanding. Much attention has been drawn to the benefits of increasing n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids in the diet, either through direct fortification of foodstuffs, or through supplementation. However, it is clear that there is some confusion among the general public as to the benefits of foods fortified with short-chain n-3 fatty acids compared with long-chain fatty acids and, indeed, over the role omega 3 fatty acids play in homeostasis. With the supplement market growing quickly and the general public seemingly increasingly 'health-conscious', emphasis should be focused upon educating the public more thoroughly about the biological roles that t...

The proportion of energy from saturated fatty acids (SFA) has fallen markedly over the past 20 years and now accounts for 13% of dietary energy. However, values still remain above the recommended 11% target. An elevated SFA intake is associated with raised plasma total and low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and increased risk of coronary heart disease. Replacing SFA with cis-unsaturated fatty acids results in a favourable change in total/high density lipoprotein-cholesterol but there is no significant change when SFA are replaced by carbohydrate. In order to achieve the target intake in the UK, the Food Standards Agency has launched its 'saturated fat and energy campaign'. Lessons from other countries demonstrate the effectiveness of similar campaigns in improving their nation's hea...

Dietary cholesterol in foods such as eggs has only a small and clinically insignificant effect on blood cholesterol, especially when compared with the much greater effects of dietary saturated fatty acids on blood cholesterol. These facts are now well established and, as a consequence, recommendations from major food and health bodies concerning dietary cholesterol have been relaxed in the UK and elsewhere in recent years. However, in the minds of the public, cholesterol in the diet, specifically from eggs, continues to be viewed with suspicion and that view is still reflected in the advice of some professionals.
BRIEFING PAPER: Culinary oils and their health effects

Conclusions Acknowledgements References Vegetable oils are mainly produced from oilseeds (e.g. rapeseed and sunflower seed) as well as from legumes (e.g. peanut and soybean), nuts (e.g. walnut and almond) and the flesh of some fruits (e.g. olives). Vegetable oils are pressed from the plants and are then processed and refined to produce high-quality oils suitable for use as an ingredient in recipes, for frying, in salad dressings and in the production of margarines and spreads. There has been substantial growth in the oilseeds markets over the past 30 years. This was initially driven by health concerns but, more recently, has been because of the interest in biofuels and the changing market. In 2008, the four main types of vegetable oil that dominated the world market (in terms of the quanti...

The Early Nutrition Programming Project, EARNEST, is a large research programme which brings together a multi-disciplinary team of international scientists and leaders in key areas of the early nutrition programming field from major research centres across 16 EU countries. The integrated programme of work includes experimental studies in humans, prospective observational studies and mechanistic animal work including physiological studies, cell culture models and molecular techniques. It is funded by the EC under the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technical Development and is co-ordinated by the University of Munich. The project started in 2005 and will run to 2010. The first results are now becoming available. (Source: Nutrition Bulletin)

ProSafeBeef is a 5-year integrated project funded by the European Commission under the sixth Framework Programme. The overall aim is to advance beef safety and quality across Europe and the work programme spans seven integrated "pillars". Pillar 3 is concerned with producing safe beef and beef products with enhanced nutritional and eating quality characteristics. A particular focus is on the development of strategies to enhance the concentrations in beef of those fatty acids considered to be of benefit to human health, without causing a detrimental effect on the appearance, shelf-life or eating quality of the beef. There is accumulating evidence of the importance of long-chain n-3 (omega-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for human health and disease prevention, and also evidence from ...

Perspectives for metabolomics in human nutrition: an overview

Metabolomics describes the measurement of the full complement of the products of metabolism in a single biological sample and correlating these metabolomic profiles with known physiological or pathological states. The metabolome offers the possibility of finding unique fingerprints responsible for different phenotypes. Analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance or mass spectrometry measure thousands of compounds within the metabolome simultaneously, and appropriate data mining and database tools allow the finding of significant correlations among the measured metabolomes. The first direct outcome of nutritional metabolomics will be the discovery of biomarkers, which can reveal changes in health and disease, but also indicate short-term and long-term dietary intake. The concer...

Metabolomics is a comprehensive method for metabolite assessment, measuring the overall metabolic signature of biological samples. This approach opens up many possibilities in areas such as new biomarker discovery and hypothesis generation. The application of metabolomics is growing rapidly but many challenges must first be addressed before it can reach its true potential. Metabolomics organisations are currently working towards guidelines for commonality in metabolomics experiments as development of optimal methodologies and study designs are needed. Blood and urine appear to be the most useful biofluids for nutrition research, but an array of biofluids, cells and tissues can be used. The key steps required for the successful understanding of metabolomics data are compound identification ...

α-priori versus α-posterior methods in dietary pattern analysis: a review in nutrition epidemiology

Dietary patterns are a set of habits regarding consumption of foods and beverages. They are often influenced by environmental or cultural particularities, and by religion. Examples of dietary patterns include the Mediterranean, Asian and Western diets, and the prudent diet. The majority of these dietary patterns suggest portion sizes for different food items, as well as giving information on the number of servings from each food group to be consumed on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. In the past, many epidemiological studies assessing the role that diet plays in health have focused upon single nutrients or food items. However, people do not eat isolated nutrients; instead they consume meals consisting of a variety of foods, with complex combinations of micro- and macronutrients. Therefor...

Mycoprotein is a high protein, high fibre, low fat food ingredient derived from fermentation of the filamentous fungus Fusarium venenatum. Interest in the putative role of mycoprotein in lowering blood cholesterol concentrations, reducing energy intakes and controlling blood sugar levels has generated a small number of human studies investigating the effects of mycoprotein on cholesterol reduction, satiety and insulinaemia/glycaemia. In today's 'obesogenic' environment, in which there is an abundance of foods high in fat and/or sugar available to consumers, there is growing interest in foods that are both nutritious and satiating, but that are of low-energy density, and are low in saturates, salt and sugar. Mycoprotein has a favourable fatty acid profile (being relatively low in saturates)...

There is cumulative evidence that there is a relationship between diet and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. The majority of studies have focused on the role of carbohydrate and fat on CHD risk; yet the role of protein has, until recently, been neglected. The effects of dietary protein on modulating CHD risk factors are still unclear. The aim of this review is to summarise available data from epidemiological and randomised control trials on the effects of animal and vegetable protein intake on markers of CHD risk; that is, obesity, hyperlipidaemia, glucose intolerance, diabetes and hypertension. Regarding the management of body weight, reviewed data suggest that there is no convincing evidence that higher protein (HP) diets enhance weight loss compared with low protein (LP) diets, but the...

Epidemiological evidence based on both case[ndash]control and prospective cohort studies points to an overall positive relationship between consumption of milk/dairy products and the risk of developing prostate cancer. There are inconsistencies in the data, but taken together, the increased relative risk does not seem to be high. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to account for the relationship, with most attention being focused on the involvement of calcium/vitamin D, insulin-like growth factor-1 and oestrogens, although it is unlikely that a single factor in milk is implicated. In any event, any added risk of prostate cancer from increased milk consumption has to be set alongside other evidence, which shows that increased milk consumption can provide substantially reduced risk of...

It has been recognised for decades that high fat intakes are not conducive to good health and, more recently, that the fatty acid profile of the diet (sometimes referred to as fat quality) is also important. Fat intake as a proportion of total food energy has declined over recent years in line with recommendations. Although there have been changes in the types of fats consumed and a fall in the total intake of saturates towards the recommended level, there is still room for improvement. The proportion of energy derived from saturates is still too high in most EU countries. The recommended level is 10% or less of total energy ( (Source: Nutrition Bulletin)

For several years, there has been an increasing awareness of the fundamental role that the complex bacterial ecosystem plays in our health. Inulin and oligofructose are prebiotic dietary fibres naturally present in the chicory root. They escape metabolism in the small intestine, and their selective fermentation by the human colonic microflora leads to a shift in the composition of the indigenous bacterial ecosystem, in favour of health-promoting bifidobacteria. In addition to their dietary fibre effects on improved bowel regularity, several physiological advantages are linked to their specific pattern of fermentation in the colon, including improved mineral absorption, enhanced natural host defences and colonic protection, improved gut health, and beneficial influence on appetite regulatio...

The proportion of older people in the UK population is rising, and those aged 65 years and over are particularly at risk of malnutrition. This is caused by factors such as underlying disease, poor oral health, decreased mobility, limited transport to local shops, social isolation and poverty. Older men, particularly those who live alone, may be even more at risk of an inadequate diet. This paper presents findings from a subset of the Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey, a national survey of materially deprived individuals aged 2 years and over in the UK. The influence of social, physical and other factors on foods consumed and nutrient intake in 234 men (unweighted sample) aged 65 years and over who either lived alone or with other(s) of retirement age is investigated. Mean energy intakes...

The complex human colonic microbiota plays a key role in gut health, and both the composition and metabolism of the gut microbiota are strongly diet related. Controlled dietary intake studies in obese individuals demonstrated that consumption of low-carbohydrate diets results in low faecal butyrate concentrations together with a low abundance of the major butyrate-producing bacteria, Roseburia spp. and Eubacterium rectale group. Resistant dietary carbohydrates, including pre-biotics, escape digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and are fermented to short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by bacteria in the colon. The main SCFAs formed are acetate, propionate and butyrate. Model colonic fermentor systems employed to determine which bacterial groups utilise specific substrates indicated that...

Many studies have found that people on diets high in fibre have reduced risks of certain diseases such as cancers, coronary heart disease, obesity and possibly diabetes. Fibre is a collective term for a group of compounds, which differ in their chemical structure and physical properties and elicit a variety of physiological effects. Some health benefits linked to fibre consumption are well established (e.g. promoting a regular bowel habit) and others are becoming more firmly established. The effects of the various non-digestible components are not always fully interchangeable, although there is considerable overlap, but they share an ability to pass undigested into the large bowel. This makes it important that fibre intake comes from a range of sources to ensure maximum health benefits. Th...

Cereals are staple foods, providing an important source of micro- and macronutrients in both developed and developing countries. Specifically, cereal products are an important source of energy, carbohydrate, protein and fibre, as well as containing a range of micronutrients such as vitamin E, some of the B vitamins, magnesium and zinc. But it seems that their role in promoting good health goes beyond merely the provision of nutrients; there is much evidence to suggest that regular consumption of cereal products, specifically whole grains, may have a role in the prevention of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and colorectal cancer. Additionally, many cereal products promote feelings of satiety, and the regular consumption of cereal-based products at mealtimes appear ...

Prevalence of postnatal depression (PND) occurs in approximately 13[ndash]20% of women after birth and has detrimental consequences for both the mother and the offspring. The causes of PND remain unclear, with research suggesting a multifactorial aetiology. It is believed that some dietary constituents may, in part, be related to the onset of PND. The possible protective roles of folate, riboflavin, calcium, magnesium and zinc intake have been investigated, as well as the role of a high glycaemic index diet, with conflicting results. Most of the literature appears to have focused on the symptoms of PND in relation to patterns of fish consumption and intake of n-3(omega-3) fatty acids. A review of studies published through MEDLINE indicated that riboflavin, calcium and zinc may play a role ...
