Mixed methods research approach to the development and review of competency standards for dietitians

Conclusion:  The mixed methods approach used in this review provides rich data about contemporary dietetic practice. Our view supports a planned review of all competency standards to ensure practice informs education and credentialing, and we recommend the Dietitians Association of Australia consider this in the future.
Exploring weight status, dietary intake and acculturation in South Asian women living in Brisbane, Queensland

Conclusion:  Despite the results not reaching statistical significance, these findings do point to areas worthy of further investigation. These include the relationship between acculturation factors with dietary intake and the prevalence of overweight and obesity. Given the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in this small sample, there appears to be a need to investigate diet and physical activity in specific groups to inform the development of culturally relevant chronic disease identification and management programmes.
Summer and winter prevalence of vitamin D deficiency of young resident doctors in North India

Conclusions:  Hypovitaminosis D was common among apparently normal young resident doctors engaged in indoor work in both seasons. This may have negative short‐ and long‐term health implications. Provision of vitamin D supplementation (oral cholecalciferol) to young resident doctors and other indoor professionals should be considered. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusion:  This review found limited evidence that being either overweight or underweight increases falls incidence. Referrals for nutritional management to decrease falls risk should not be based on weight status alone. Malnutrition screening should be used to identify appropriate patient referrals to dietitians in falls clinics. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Comparison of nutrition knowledge among health professionals, patients with eating disorders and the general population

Conclusions:  Australian health professionals exhibited higher levels of nutrition knowledge than health professionals in previous studies in other countries. However, non‐dietitian health professionals had similar levels of knowledge to individuals with eating disorders. Training and continuing education in nutrition is needed so health professionals can confidently identify when a patient has misleading information about nutrition and either correct the misinformation or refer the patient on to a qualified dietitian.
Conclusions:  Past interventions have not tended to focus on the fruit and vegetable knowledge, or behaviours, of Australian young adults. On the basis of findings from this study, it appears that more work is needed to develop messages to effectively target this important group. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions:  Manipulation of food cost may alter food consumption and therefore risk factors for chronic disease. Further longitudinal studies investigating the impact of pricing strategies on diet quality and disease risk are needed. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions:  In commercially available loaves of bread in Australia, the carbohydrate content of a slice can vary by up to 45% of that reported on the label, in accordance with Food Standards Australia New Zealand. This highlights a practical limitation inherent with the commonly held view that food labels can facilitate accuracy in carbohydrate counting in 1‐g increments.

Conclusion:  The present study provides an insight into the perspectives of older men towards their food‐related activities. Past experiences shaped their approach towards healthy eating. Community programmes need to identify those at nutrition risk, provide those at need with knowledge and skills and promote meal sharing. Initiatives need to be cognisant of the food‐related values, desire for time and effort efficiency and the explicit needs and wishes of older men. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions:  Some concerns remain regarding provision of optimal nutritional care of femoral neck fracture patients in Australia. There were few respondents working in the community with falls related femoral neck fracture patients, with a greater number of dietitians working in the metropolitan area responding to the survey. The Dietitians working in this area are implementing a great variety of screening methods, with a large number using non‐validated screening tools. Clearer guidelines for health professionals involved in femoral neck fracture aftercare would be beneficial to standardise care in this area. A useful first step for dietitians would be to advocate for the use of evidence‐based practice resources in selection of site and age appropriate nutrition screening tools. (S...

Conclusions:  Workplace satisfaction among this sample of metropolitan dietitians is multifactorial. Increasing perceived flexibility in work hours may increase satisfaction. Provision of intangible reward and recognition is likely to be well accepted. Future research should involve another survey of a representative sample of practitioners and managers, with the view to developing practical initiatives to improve satisfaction and maintain service delivery.
Eating environment in the aged‐care residential setting in New Zealand: Promoters and barriers to achieving optimum nutrition. Observations of the foodservice, menu and meals

Conclusions:  This is the first such study conducted in New Zealand. Results should be of interest to the Ministry of Health and district health boards that are charged with the responsibility to ensure that meals in long‐term care facilities meet the nutritional needs of this potentially vulnerable population. Shortcomings identified in the present study require a multidisciplinary approach that should include district health boards, auditing agencies, aged‐care organisations, training providers and dietitians.
Conclusion:  This is the first study to describe the acceptability and potential efficacy of an online healthy lifestyles program for parents of preschool children. The Time2bHealthy Program offers a viable option for parental involvement in obesity prevention programs targeting young children. Given the online nature of the program it has the capacity to be utilised within metropolitan, regional and rural areas of Australia. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusion:  Dietitians need skill in drafting reports or letters useful for general practitioners by selecting content of value to doctors and using a suitable style. Implementation of shared electronic records in Australia will facilitate information transfer to help realise collaborative patient care. Further investigations of dietitian–general practitioner correspondence are warranted to determine best practice. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusion:  Differences between Branded and Private Label products were food category specific. The present study provides a first‐time comparison of a comprehensive sample of Branded versus Private Label products, across multiple food categories, in Australia with respect to nutrients related to cardiovascular health. It also provides insight into serve size differences, and may be used as a baseline for future comparisons of nutritional content and serve sizes between Branded and Private Label products, and to monitor the impact of potential new food product developments and reformulations.

Conclusions:  WA practitioners place a high value on the use of cooking as a public health nutrition intervention. Practitioners felt they have good knowledge and skills in cooking but indicated the need to know more about conducting cooking skill interventions. The findings suggest the need to improve outcome evaluation as a component of cooking skill interventions to assess long‐term behaviour change. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusion:  There is limited evidence available to assess the effectiveness of diet interventions on histological severity of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease. There is good evidence that clinically significant weight reduction can improve steatosis and risk factors for non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease. A relationship may exist between the frequency of dietetic consultations and amount of weight reduction achieved in patients with non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fortnightly intervention for a minimum of three months to achieve at least 5% weight loss is recommended. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions:  Parents want help with selecting lunch box food/drinks that are nutritious, convenient, inexpensive and appealing for children to eat. Schools need to be supported to introduce healthy eating programs and should review the time given for young children to eat at school. Dietitians need to consider the home food environment and what motivates parents to make food choices for their children. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusion:  The present study examined the cost, affordability, availability and quality of the healthy food basket, as well as an assessment of food promotions in supermarkets, finding no difference between high and low household income areas. The study provides valuable information to assist in a deeper understanding of food security in Adelaide. It is recommended that a longitudinal study would assist in establishing a reliable healthy food basket monitoring system that could lead to more robust policy outcomes.
Conclusion:  The art of photographing food portions itself is a difficult task. Inappropriate angles or lighting can make the food appear larger or smaller than it actually is. Timing is critical as the food can melt, wilt, collapse or discolour if the photo is not taken promptly. Clear labelling and a standard of reference for all photographs was necessary. The developed food portion images will allow users of the DietAdvice website to estimate portion sizes more accurately than text‐based sizes alone, although validation is required.
Regulating the types of foods and beverages marketed to Australian children: How useful are food industry commitments?

Conclusion:  Food industry commitments regarding the types of foods considered appropriate for marketing to children do not adequately restrict the marketing for energy‐dense, nutrient‐poor foods. It is recommended food manufacturers who commit to restricting their marketing of unhealthy foods to children use a standardised, independent nutrient profiling tool based on per 100 g/100 mL to determine the appropriateness of foods and beverages for marketing to children.
Conclusion:  Providing diets for children that are nutritionally appropriate requires on average 33% of the child‐related component of New Zealand Government provisions for low socioeconomic families in 2007. New Zealand should consider further strategies to make children's meals more affordable for low‐income families. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Professional supervision in dietetics: A focus group study investigating New Zealand dietitians' understanding and experience of professional supervision and their perception of its value in dietetic practice

Conclusion: Dietitians in New Zealand believe supervision has a place in the domain of best dietetic practice. Many of the concepts found in the helping profession literature are potentially workable in dietetics. Further investigation and discussion needs to occur within the profession to clarify professional supervision's meaning and relevance as a component of dietetic practice.
Conclusions: A preclinical dietetic Objective Structured Clinical Examination allows problems arising during the teaching of basic clinical skills to be noted and corrected. In addition, a preclinical Objective Structured Clinical Examination identifies students requiring additional support on placement. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Conclusions: Results of this pilot study were effective in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption in the kindergarten, however, longer-term evaluation and assessment of the impact on the home environment are required. The inclusion of nutrition education and instruction on healthy eating habits in the course curriculum combined with social support from teachers and families may improve and sustain fruit and vegetable eating behaviours.
Conclusions: Because parents are often distracted when purchasing food they may not read on-pack nutrition information, especially if this is difficult to comprehend. Participants' responses suggest policy-makers should explore several front-of-pack labels, particularly those that use visual heuristics such as Traffic Light labels.
Conclusion: Current Medicare policy arrangements provide insufficient initial consultation time for counselling; and available frequency of follow-up consultations is low. As a consequence, eligible patients have limited access to low-cost dietetics services. The results support a need for review of the Medicare-Plus Chronic Disease Management policy for dietetics interventions and alignment with other counselling services to better meet the needs of providers and also of patients with chronic conditions and diet-related risk factors.
Conclusion: The study identified a proportion of acute hospital patients for whom nutrition screening using Malnutrition Screening Tool was difficult because of limited applicability if a patient was unable to communicate. Use of the Malnutrition Screening Tool modified by an additional frail/underweight observation was practical in a systematic nutrition screening process and assisted the containment of dietitians' workloads. Further research is warranted to develop or modify a subjective tool valid for the screening of all targeted hospital patients. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Nutrition and maternal health: What women want and can we provide it?

Conclusion: Considerable variation exists in Australian Maternal Health Dietetic services and referral guidelines. There is a role for Maternal Health Dietitian/Nutritionists to advocate for improved staffing levels and for the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based services. Potential service delivery improvements are suggested, including a model of dietetic care. (Source: Nutrition and Dietetics)

Women's perceptions relating to the introduction of mandatory iodine fortification in Australia

Conclusion: Women in the present study expect an authority, either a government body or health professionals, to take responsibility in making proactive decisions for the health of the population. When accompanied by transparent processes that include widespread consultation with consumers and clear explanations for the process, mandatory fortification is considered acceptable as an appropriate and effective strategy for ameliorating iodine deficiency.
Food advertisements containing 'scientific' and 'lay person' keywords: Responses from a sample of female Australian consumers

Conclusions: Consumers' responses to keywords in advertisements are complex. Communications research that tests the message in its total context is needed to ensure the meaning of nutrition messages are being conveyed as is intended.
