Head and neck radiotherapy causes coun...

CONCLUSION: In spite of inconclusive findings at conventional imaging studies being the most common indication for breast magnetic resonance imaging, there is no evidence in the literature supporting such a conduct. Because of its high sensitivity and high rate of false positive results, magnetic resonance imaging should be appropriately indicated in order to avoid unnecessary procedures. Once such method is appropriately indicated, it may contribute in the decision making process, constituting an essential tool in the assessment of breast lesions.
CONCLUSION: With the present study, the authors can conclude that ultrasonography offers high sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of the articular disc location with the patient at rest, either to analyze anatomical position or to analyze disc displacement. On the other hand, it does not offer significant results to analyze articular discs in patients with open mouth as well as to analyze disc/condyle morphological changes.

DWI/ADC is a completely non-invasive technique that has been successfully conducted for many years in brain imaging and is currently being studied for the assessment of other organs, such as the abdomen and pelvis and in particular the head and neck structures. Even though DWI and the ADC measurement are able provide tissue information at the cellular level, most imaging centers have not yet adopted them as part of their routine evaluation of the head and neck. DWI has demonstrated usefulness to discriminate specific histological tumor types, especially to differentiate benign solid lesions from malignant masses, to evaluate lymph nodes, particularly to differentiate benign disease from malignancy, to differentiate postradiation changes from residual tumor and potentially to predict therap...

CONCLUSION: In our cohort, the mammographic evaluation of patients with DCIS presenting cancerization of lobules demonstrated clusters of microcalcifications in a lobular distribution. Although clusters of round calcifications are typically associated with a benign process, cancerization of lobules by DCIS may produce a similar pattern, thus mimicking a benign condition.
Multislice computed tomography is currently the imaging modality of choice for evaluating paranasal sinuses and adjacent structures.
CONCLUSION: Comparative analysis of high-resolution computed tomography and chest radiography findings demonstrated that thin-walled cysts and small nodules cannot be satisfactorily evaluated by conventional radiography. Because of its capacity to detect and characterize lung cysts and nodules, high-resolution computed tomography increases the probability of diagnosing pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis.
Evaluation of diverse methods for measuring compression force in three different mammographic systems

CONCLUSION: Differences were observed among compression systems and among proposed methods. Thus the choice of the way the compression test is performed is critical for the acceptance of the mammography equipment, the technical lead being the most competent to define the most appropriate and realistic testing method. It is suggested that the compression force measurement should be performed with an extension dynamometer, rather than with a compression dynamometer, in cases where the mammography compression system functioning is not known.
CONCLUSION: The results of the present study demonstrate that, in patients with chronic hepatitis C, ultrasonography has limitations in the characterization of histopathological changes, with an intermediate rate of agreement with the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis. Considering the specificity of 77.9% and the negative predictive value of 95.5%, the authors highlight the capacity of the method to demonstrate the probability of absence of hepatic steatosis.
Multidetector-row computed tomography angiography for the diagnosis of anomalous pulmonary venous drainage: an initial experiment

CONCLUSION: Multidetector-row computed tomography angiography can be useful for diagnosing the described anomalies because of its non-invasiveness, and its ability to evaluate intra- and extra-cardiac structures. The technique allows a thorough study of the thoracic anatomy and contributes to surgical conduct, consequently improving patient prognosis, in particular by allowing the diagnosis of clinically unsuspected malformations (Source: Radiologia Brasileira)

Fistula in ano is an uncommon condition that has a tendency to recur despite seemingly appropriate surgery.

CONCLUSION: Although several freeware applications are available, no one of them is complete. It is up to the users to analyze and select the software that best suits their needs. However, Onis, Synedra and ClearCanvas stand out because of their own peculiarities. The use of freeware image viewers is entirely feasible in the radiologists' daily routine. (Source: Radiologia Brasileira)

Acalvaria is a rare congenital malformation of unknown pathogenesis characterized by the absence of the flat bones of the cranial vault, dura mater and associated muscles, while the central nervous system is usually preserved.
The objective of the present essay was to encourage a careful evaluation of periosteal reactions on magnetic resonance images. The initial approach to bone lesions is made by conventional radiography and, based on the imaging findings, periosteal reactions are classified into classical subtypes. Although magnetic resonance imaging is considered as the gold standard for local staging of bone tumors, the utilization of such method in the study of periosteal reactions related to focal bone lesions has been poorly emphasized, with relatively few studies approaching this subject. The literature review revealed a study describing an experimental animal model of osteomyelitis suggesting that magnetic resonance imaging is superior to other imaging methods in the early identification of periosteal ...

CONCLUSION: The endovascular approach is safe and effective in the management of crisoid aneurysms. Although this technique can be used as an adjuvant or complement to surgery, particularly in cases where deep afferents are involved, complete resolution can be achieved only with endovascular treatment. The choice of treatment method should be based on a range of typical characteristics of the lesion, including angioarchitecture, size and clinical presentation.
