CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that, although mothers reported having received orientation, only one third of them implemented environmental and behavioral changes. Moreover, when meeting three criteria was established as a requirement to define knowledge, this number was even lower among respondents. These findings strengthen the need to focus on educational interventions in knowledge deficiencies, to enable asthmatic children to develop successful self-management attitudes.
CONCLUSIONS: Self-reported measures of weight and height in adolescents do not present valid measures; therefore, they should not be used to replace measured values. Additionally, we observed that 10% of obese boys and 40% of obese girls could have remained unidentified if we had used only self-reported measures, emphasizing the effects of the low reliability of self-reporting.

CONCLUSION: A more comprehensive analysis, specifically for deaths from tuberculosis as the underlying and non-underlying cause, allowed identification of a greater number of predictive factors that would otherwise not be detected if follow-up had lasted only until the end of treatment.

This article aims at examining the association between the introduction of artificial milk and socioeconomic and demographic factors in a representative sample of 1,057 mothers of children under six months users of 27 health care units in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the year 2007. Information about mother's characteristics and children's feeding practices were obtained through interviews with mothers after a pediatric appointment. Multivariate logistic regression models adjusted by children's age, with weighing and design effect were used to estimate association between mother's characteristics and introduction of artificial milk. Results indicated that introduction of artificial milk was negatively associated with having formal employment (OR= 0.40; CI 95% 0.24 - 0.67) and not having a ...

The objective of the present cross-sectional study was to identify the factors associated with the adequate consumption of fruit and vegetables (> 400g/day) among 581 adult Japanese-Brazilians, 1st and 2nd generations of immigrants, living in Bauru, SP, Brazil. Food consumption was estimated using three 24-hour recalls. On adjusted logistic regression models, higher meal frequencies were associated with a better chance of adequate daily intake of fruit and vegetables [OR (95% CI)]: [1.31 (1.05, 1.63)]. Nevertheless, individuals at the highest tertile of saturated fat intake were less likely to have adequate daily intake of these foods [0.35 (0.21, 0.60)]. A trend toward adequate intake of fruit and vegetables was found among older participants. These results suggest that more intensive int...

CONCLUSION: In a population with a high poverty degree, low Human Development Index and high prevalence of food insecurity, the exclusive use of anthropometric indicators may show a more favorable nutritional status. Therefore, the results cannot be interpreted only in the field of internal validity, but as part of a process of fast changes that characterize the nutritional transition in course, also reaching populations in unfavorable life conditions.

Despite much research in the identification of areas with malaria, it is urgent to further investigate mapping techniques to achieve better approaches in strategies to prevent, mitigate, and eradicate the mosquito and the illness eventually. By using spatial distributed modeling techniques with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), the study proposes methodology to map malaria risk zoning for the municipality of Buenaventura in Colombia. The model proposed by Craig et al.¹ using climatic information was adapted to the conditions of the study area regarding scale and spatial resolution. Geomorphologic and anthropic variables were added to improve spatial allocation of areas with higher risk of contracting the illness, refining zoning. Then, they were contrasted with the locations reporte...

This study assessed oral health outcomes (perceived dental treatment need, untreated dental caries, gingival bleeding, periodontal pockets, and pain in teeth and gums), in relation to color/race inequalities among adolescents in each Brazilian region. The database included dental examination and interview of 16,833 15-19-year-old adolescents, surveyed by the Brazilian health authority, from May 2002 to October 2003, in accordance with international diagnostic criteria standardized by the World Health Organization. Prevalence ratios estimated by Poisson regression, and controlled by socioeconomic status and access to fluoridated piped water, assessed oral health differentials among color/race groups and country's regions. Except for periodontal pockets, prevalence figures were higher in the...

This study aims to identify the spatial dependence of adolescent pregnancy within socioeconomic aspects and social vulnerability. Presuming the existence of a spatial dependence between these facets, the present work used the Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis. This tool is a collection of techniques which describes and visualizes spatial distributions; identifies atypical circumstances; discovers patterns of spatial association; makes clusters of similar values; and suggests spatial schemes or other forms of spatial heterogeneity. One of the results highlighted is the statistically significant correlation between social vulnerability and the rate of live births for women between 12-19 and 20-29 years of age. The study identified: (a) the presence of clusters with high proportions of teenag...

CONCLUSIONS: The association observed between waist circumference and hypertension in several studies may be related to the lack of control of potential confounding factors in analyses, and to the fact that the effect of total body adiposity was not eliminated. Further investigations should be conducted in the Brazilian population to check true associations among anthropometric indexes with several outcomes, also investigating the best cutoff points for such indexes.
CONCLUSIONS: The decreasing trend in sick leave rates and the respective increase in the average days of sick leave taken reflect changes in the morbidity profile of state civil servants, with the predomination of mental disorders and osteo-muscular system diseases, which demand greater recovery time before returning to work. This study suggests greater investigation of the factors associated to the illness process underlying civil servants' health care policies. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia)

CONCLUSION: Students consider parents and teachers as drug information sources; however they prefer to talk about this subject with parents and friends. The school is a suitable place to deal with drug abuse prevention, and strategies that permit the development of the students' reflexive and judgment skills should be used for that purpose.
The objective is to evaluate whether the application of International Rules allows the selection of the real underlying cause, even if causes of death were poorly declared by the physician. The cases belong to the "Study on mortality of childbearing age women" from which total of 1,315 DC were selected. For each death, an investigation was conducted through household interviews, consultation to hospital records, and autopsies. Physicians were trained to fill a new DC, after reading all the information, and to select the real underlying cause. This cause selected after the investigation was compared to the corresponding cause in the original DC, obtained by means of the International Rules. Results showed that in 1,192 (90.6%) original DC there was agreement with the real cause obtained wit...

The aim of this study was to analyze the trend in mortality due to external causes in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, from 1994 to 2005, according to specific groups (traffic injuries, poisoning, intentional self-harm, assault), age group and gender. The trend analysis was performed with polynomial regression models, based on data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health's Mortality Information System. For all external causes, the trend was not statistically significant, but when it was stratified by gender and age group the results showed a downward trend in some strata. According to gender, the yearly increase in mortality rate was higher for men. In general, this increase was observed in all age groups. For traffic injuries, there was a decrease in the mortality rate, mainly for men....

A sobr...

This study found indiscriminate use of pesticides in unsafe and unhealthy conditions of work that compromise the health of exposed workers. Symptoms suggestive of pesticide poisoning are closely related to exposure to organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroid, which match pesticides used in fruit farming. Seven percent of the population reported poisoning events at some point in their lives. Technical assistance related to the management of pesticides is poor, and actions toward the improvement of health, environment and work conditions were not seen. These vulnerabilities corroborate those related to a technological model that aims merely at productivity and good financial performance. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia)
