Glytone is offering three new antiaging products that will be available exclusively to physicians beginning this month. The day cream, the eye cream, and the facial serum contain high concentrations of time-released antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, and red tea extract. The eye cream also contains glycolic acid, caffeine, and licorice extract to reduce puffiness around the eye area. The facial serum and the day cream help reduce visible signs of aging and protect against further environmental and free radical damage. The facial serum and day cream are best if used on normal or oily skin. The three products can be used together or individually. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

A brand new year has begun, and that, as usual, means brand new surprises from our friends at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This year's big surprise: The CMS has decided it will no longer pay for consultations in either outpatient (99241-99245) or inpatient (99251-99255) settings.
The National Cancer Institute and the pharmaceutical maker Allergan Inc. are jointly supporting a trial to determine whether bimatoprost (Latisse) can stimulate regrowth of eyelashes and eyebrows after their loss in chemotherapy. The company told a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee in December 2008 that it would explore that potential use of the drug. The study began enrolling patients in October and will be led by Dr. Jenny Kim of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of California, Los Angeles. Men and women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer will be enrolled at nine sites and followed for 6 months. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $1.77 million grant to Pratima Karnik, Ph.D. (Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland) for a 5-year study of cicatricial alopecia. The study, “PPAR-gamma Signaling in Normal Pilosebaceous Units and in Scarring Alopecia,” is a continuation of collaborative scientific research linking a defect in lipid processing and peroxisome biogenesis to rare and painful hair loss disorders. The preliminary studies provided insight into highly complex interaction between hair follicle cells and environmental factors that may cause cicatricial alopecia. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill requiring a health check and a written clearance before patients can undergo plastic surgery. Assembly bill 1116, the Donda West Law, was inspired by the death of entertainer Kanye West's mother, Donda West, who was the former chairwoman of the Chicago State University English department. She died on Nov. 10, 2007, because of complications from cosmetic surgery. A physical was not performed before she underwent surgery. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

DR. ZACHARY is professor and chair of the department of dermatology at the University of California, Irvine. Any talk of health care reform must include a discussion of the money we're currently wasting on health care regulation. Recent data suggest that 47-60 million Americans are without health insurance. Many people avoid seeking health care because it is too costly. If they do seek care, many become burdened by high costs. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

In a prospective study of 56 patients with proliferative malignant neoplasms or benign skin lesions, the use of ultrasound elastography analysis prior to biopsy correctly differentiated benign from malignant lesions in 100% of cases (P value equal .0007), Dr. Eliot Siegel reported at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
As a child growing up in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Stanford T. Shulman became fascinated with collecting postage stamps because they combined his interests in history and geography. “One of the best ways to learn history and geography is from stamps from around the world,” said Dr. Shulman, chief of the division of infectious diseases at Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago. Postage stamps “are colorful, they all tell a story, and you can learn a whole lot from them, whether you want to have a butterfly stamp collection, an elephant stamp collection, or a medicine stamp collection.” (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

Genetic mutations that impair dectin-1 function have been tied to susceptibility to fungal infection in two families, according to two separate reports. In the first study, genetic assessments were performed in a large, consanguineous Iranian family to determine whether a mutated gene was responsible for their nonsyndromic fungal infections, noted Dr. Erik-Oliver Glocker of Royal Free Hospital and University College London and his associates.
Seattle — Evidence from recent and ongoing trials is helping to clarify the best strategies for managing cutaneous melanoma. A hurdle to better melanoma management has been the high variability of the disease, exemplified in part by its wide-ranging presentations, said Dr. William Dzwierzynski, professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In fact, accumulating evidence suggests that melanoma may encompass several different diseases with differing biology. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

A healthy 31-year-old woman from eastern Oregon presented with a 3- to 4-month history of multiple, new, asymptomatic “moles” over her buttocks, thighs, and lower torso. Besides delivering a baby 10 months prior, her past medical history and review of systems was noncontributory except for gestational diabetes that was controlled at the time with metformin. If the relationship is causal—and that's an unsettled issue—then atopic dermatitis would explain roughly 10% of all cases of ADHD, Dr. Jochen Schmitt estimated at the annual congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.
Kinerase Scar Healing Therapy is available for improving the appearance, color, roughness, and discomfort of old and new scars. It is a concentrated, nongreasy silicone gel that forms an invisible protective barrier to soften, flatten, and smooth scars and reduce the appearance of scar-related skin discoloration. It also helps to normalize collagen deposition by restoring the barrier function to the skin. The gel contains the emollient cyclopentasiloxane; three silicones that form an occlusive barrier on the skin; and a stable lipophilic form of vitamin C that may promote collagen synthesis, prevent lipid peroxidation, and inhibit tyrosinase activity.
DNA Repair Factor Nourishing Lotion combines a patented copper peptide formula with advanced DNA repair and moisturizing properties to help regenerate skin and reverse signs of damage. The lotion's restorative activity is supported by an amino acid system that combines glycine, proline, and alanine in a form similar to collagen. The lotion is designed to identify and repair indirect DNA damage from free radicals and cell oxidation, as well as direct DNA damage from cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers. The hydrating and correcting formula is suitable for all skin types, but it may be especially helpful for mature and photodamaged skin. The lotion may be applied twice daily, after cleansing the skin in the morning and in the evening. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

In family medicine, he explained, “you have to think of a patient as someone who is multidimensional. In music, you do the same thing. FDA's constraint that Allergan discuss off-label uses for Botox only in general terms violates the first amendment and hurts patients, Allergan claimed. To fully inform physicians, the company said it needs to describe dosing guidelines, patient selection criteria, and proper injection technique. “We believe that the inability to share such important information proactively with the medical community violates the First Amendment and potentially diminishes the quality o...

PHILADELPHIA — Men and women with a history of migraine with aura were significantly more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than were those without headache. Women with nonmigraine headache were also significantly more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than were women without headache, but the hazard ratio was smaller, Dr. Larus S.
PHILADELPHIA — Migraine with or without aura is associated with a significant increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke and heart attack. Numerous studies have hinted at the association between migraine with aura and cardiovascular events, Dr. Marcelo E. Bigal reported at the International Headache Congress. But the population-based study he performed with his colleague, Dr. Richard Lipton, was the first to examine the association in a large national sample in which migraine, with and without aura, had been officially diagnosed according to accepted standards.
While most exanthems are self-limiting, some are not, making it important to establish a specific diagnosis, according to Dr. Anthony J. Mancini. “Parents want to go read up on these things, and they want to know how long it's going to take to go away,” Dr. Mancini said in an interview. “If you can characterize it … it's helpful for parents to know. At least they may have some answers. They know that it's going to take a while to resolve, and that saves you from follow-up phone calls and visits to the office when they're frantic because it's still there 4 weeks later.” (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

PORTLAND, ORE. — If an infant presents with at least three hypopigmented macules, think tuberous sclerosis. Tuberous sclerosis is described as a triad of neurologic impairment, multisystem hamartomas, and skin findings (such as ash leaf macules and facial angiofibromas). The disease is of autosomal dominant inheritance, with an incidence of 1:6,000 to 1:10,000. Spontaneous mutation occurs in 50%-75% of cases. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

Dr. Rockoff practices dermatology in Brookline, Mass. To respond to this column, e-mail Dr. Rockoff at sknews@elsevier.com. I'm old enough to remember the actor Robert Young in “Father Knows Best.” Because his later hit TV series “Marcus Welby, M.D.” aired when I was in medical school and residency, I never saw a single episode, but his image as the kindly general practitioner who knew everybody in town seeped into my consciousness.
BERLIN — Impaired sexual function is extremely common in the setting of moderate to severe psoriasis, and ustekinumab therapy reduces these problems by 10-fold. That's a key quality of life finding from the ongoing randomized double-blind phase III PHOENIX-1 and −2 clinical trials of this human monoclonal antibody directed against the proinflammatory cytokines interkeukin-12 and −23, Dr. Lyn Guenther reported at the annual congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY — Topical or oral antiangiogenic therapy may offer a novel avenue of treatment in inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and rosacea. In what he described as the first proof-of-concept study to show that blocking the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor may provide an entirely new approach to treating chronic inflammatory skin conditions, Dr. Michael Detmar presented highlights of his research during a satellite symposium held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the European Society for Dermatological Research.
BERLIN — Lichen planus, like psoriasis, appears to be intrinsically associated with an increased prevalence of dyslipidemia, according to a large Israeli case-control study. “Of course, this is a pioneering study and I'd like to see it repeated in other databases. Nevertheless, we suggest that patients with lichen planus might be candidates for dyslipidemia screening,” Dr. Arnon D. Cohen said at the annual congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)

This case of leukemia cutis due to aggressive natural killer cell leukemia is uncommon, and perhaps even unique. Leukemia cutis seldom occurs in children, and is seen in only 6%-9% of children with leukemia. There have been only a few reports of aggressive natural killer (NK) cell leukemia presenting in childhood. This may be the first case of bullous leukemia cutis and aggressive NK cell leukemia in a child, according to Dr. Harper N. Price. The girl also tested negative for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which commonly is present in aggressive NK cell leukemia. She appears to be the first child to be reported with EBV-negative aggressive NK cell leukemia. (Source: Skin and Allergy News)
