I suffer from "reactive insanity"

My uncle practices complementary and alternative medicine. He began his career as a dentist, where he became interested in the effects of mercury and other heavy metals on the body. Twenty years later, he has a holistic dental practice, and is part of a medical group that uses CAM techniques to treat disorders that are sometimes difficult to adequately treat with conventional medicine, such as lyme disease, allergy (particularly food allergies) and ADHD. Over the years, I have been both impressed with, and skeptical of their treatment success and diagnostic techniques. As a scientist, I look to controlled studies to guide diagnostics and treatment, but I realize that conventional medicine doesn't help everyone. And, its hard to deny the success he has had with my ADHD cousins by simply treating their food allergies and sensitivities. That said, there are some techniques that this group uses that don't hold any weight with me. (Source: Tales of a MD/PhD student)

A change in focus

I never wanted to be one of those people who just abandoned their blogs for longs periods of time, but alas that is just what I did. I thank the people who have visited over the past month and found nothing new, but my summer obligations of working, hanging out with friends, having fun, and reading non school-related books as well as a general change in priorities have taken my mind off of blogging. I wish that I could promise in this post that I'll be writing regularly again, but I'll be going on vacation for awhile, for some much needed beach and family time.
In over my head

I started my summer job yesterday (I'm working MWF), and I think I'm a in a little over my head. My responsibilities include a much needed overhaul of the webpage--which isn't that difficult for me, though it will be time consuming, and will probably take longer than it should due to conflicting views in the lab of what the site should be. I'll also be creating a database for all of the people scanned in the lab. We scan a lot of patients, so being able to easily access imaging, behavioral, and neurological information will be quite beneficial--both for management of current studies, and meta analyses of older data. I'll probably be using MySQL, which I've never used before, though I'm not too worried about it. (Source: Tales of a MD/PhD student)

Medical perks of being from a large family

My doctor's patients include my parents, my 5 aunts (and their husbands), both of my grandmothers, and all of my cousins who are older than 16. All of us went to the same pediatrician's group. We also have a family orthopedic surgeon (needed with all of our bad knees), two pediatricians that have treated all 15 of my cousins, and until he retired last year, a family ob-gyn.
I have returned to blogging!

After a much needed break that included mini golf, batting cages, a dairy farm, the airforce museum, a baseball game, and much more, I've returned to everyday living. Sadly, the last of my house guests just left, off to start graduate school. I've still got a few days of rest before starting work next week, which I think I will fill with a trip to the pool with my cousins, and some fun with loan consolidation. It has been hotter than blazes here, and I must say that I wasn't ready for the heat and humidity. Of course, I've never really tolerated heat well--I've gotten heat stroke/ heat exhaustion more times than I'd like to admit, even though I'm pretty careful about those things, and my whiter than white skin prohibits me from spending a lot of time outside when it's really sunny. Driving around with my friends, I was quickly reminded that my car has one major downfall--no (working) airconditioning. For a free car from my parents, I can't really complain, but this summer is going to be hot! (Source: Tales of a MD/PhD student)

I'm pleased to say that I finished the grant at 5pm on Wednesday (and didn't have to worry about what post office was open the latest), so keep your fingers crossed that I will get a semi-decent ranking on my first try! (Source: Tales of a MD/PhD student)

I'll be spending my time celebrating my brother's graduation from high school and writing this R03 which is due June 1, so I probably won't post until after the grant is done....Then again, maybe I will as a form of procrastination.
