ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- There was a shocking attack against an Orange County sheriff's deputy. A man suspected of having HIV is charged with attempted murder for allegedly biting a deputy. The incident began as the 32-year-old suspect ran from a Shell gas station with a bag in hand. He didn't get far, just to the Greyhound bus station, where deputies already happened to be. He wouldn't stop and, even after one taser prong, he kept kicking and fighting. When Roderick Mayes was finally restrained, the deputy who was attacked noticed a bright red bite mark on his arm. It started as nothing more than a petty theft at the Shell gas station off John Young Parkway. According to the owner, Mayes was making a dash with some stolen goods. He was spotted by members of the Orange Sheriff's Office tac...

U.S. senators John Kerry and Gordon Smith have secured an attachment to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief that would lift the nation’s ban on travel and immigration for HIV-positive people, the Human Rights Campaign announced Monday. The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations is expected to consider the legislation this week. “The time is long overdue to repeal this unjust and sweeping policy that deems HIV-positive individuals inadmissible to the United States,” Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese said in a press release. “This law emerged out of fear and stigma, and there remains no public health rationale for treating HIV more harshly than other communicable diseases.” The government bans HIV-positiv...

The Amarillo Public Health Department will soon hire an additional worker to review all HIV-positive cases in the 41-county region of the Panhandle and South Plains. The worker will provide more specific data on the incurable disease for local and state health care workers. "It's very important we are focusing on the right population and working on the appropriate interventions," said Hector Mendoza, Amarillo Public Health Department assistant director. Health careworkers reported 18 new HIV cases in the region in 2006, according to the Department of State Health Services. That number was 28 in 2005. "It's really just a collection of data," said Michael Timcisko, executive director for PASO, Panhandle AIDS Support Organization. "It is geared specifically to individuals with HIV infection."...

Nigerian women have been urged to embrace the use of Microbicide, as another way of preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases in the country. The call, which was made by the Executive Director of Ngo Hygie-Enwerem Foundation, Grace Hygie -Enwerem, in Lagos on Thursday, came just as women all over the world celebrated the International Women's Day. Microbicide, according to Hygie-Enwerem, is a product, which comes in the form of gels, creams, lubricants or rings and can be applied to the vagina or the rectum to protect women from STDs. Saying that reports had shown that women were twice more susceptible to HIV/AIDS than men, Hygie-Enwerem said a woman could easily apply the new device with or without the knowledge of the man.Read more (Source: The AIDS Awa...

Nearly 40,000 people learned this week that a trip to the doctor might have made them sick. In a type of scandal more often associated with developing countries, a Las Vegas clinic was found to be reusing syringes and vials of medication for nearly four years. The shoddy practices may have led to an outbreak of the potentially fatal hepatitis C virus and exposed patients to HIV, too. The discovery led to the biggest public health notification operation in U.S. history, brought demands for investigations and caused scores of lawyers to seek out patients at risk for infections. Thousands of patients are being urged to be tested for the viruses. Six acute cases of hepatitis C have been confirmed. The surgical center and five affiliated clinics have been closed.Read more (Source: The AIDS A...

Economic conditions are a "fundamental" challenge that blacks face in terms of HIV/AIDS, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) writes in an opinion piece for the Louisiana Weekly. He says, "When the economy sours, those who earn the least typically suffer the most. Unfortunately, those same people are statistically more likely to be suffering, literally, from diseases such as HIV/AIDS." Ellison notes that the CDC Web site states that people facing tough economic conditions do not always have access to good health care. He adds that such "dilemmas are particularly acute for African-Americans, one in four of whom were living in poverty in 1999." According to Ellison, the U.S. cannot devote funding to "lift Americans out of poverty or significantly improve health care for those living with HIV/AIDS ...

ScienceDaily (Mar. 3, 2008) — A Canada-U.S. research team has solved a major genetic mystery: How a protein in some people's DNA guards them against killer immune diseases such as HIV. In an advance online edition of Nature Medicine, the scientists explain how the protein, FOX03a, shields against viral attacks and how the discovery will help in the development of a HIV vaccine. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

OTTAWA, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Canadian researchers have discovered a gene that can block certain forms of HIV and may perhaps one day be used to prevent the onset of AIDS. Scientists from the University of Alberta identified a human gene called TRIM22 that can block HIV infection by preventing the virus from replicating. When researchers prevented human cells from turning on TRIM22, the natural defense system generated by the body when a foreign invader attacks, the cells could not protect themselves against HIV. "This means that TRIM22 is an essential part of our body's ability to fight off HIV," Dr. Stephen Barr, a researcher in the department of medical microbiology and immunology at the University of Alberta, said in a release issued Thursday.Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A vaginal microbicide gel, which keeps HIV from replicating, is safe for HIV-negative women to use every day, a six-month study has shown as quoted by media reports Thursday. The study, involving 200 sexually active HIV-negative women, looked at whether women were able to adhere to a regimen of either daily or sex-dependent use of the gel. Both regimens proved equally safe, and women's adherence to each regimen was similar. Notably, none of the women who used the new gel got HIV during the study period. The results are an advance in efforts to use microbicides to prevent HIV infection in women, the researchers said. "Finding that daily use is both safe and feasible is important, because we believe a daily approach may provide more sustainable protection a...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- A gel using anti-HIV drug tenofovir to shield women from AIDS has been proven safe for daily use and acceptable to women, study findings showed Tuesday. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Pittsburgh to test the gel's safety, involved 200 sexually active HIV-negative women aging from 19 to 50, of whom 64 percent were married. "The gel is safe to use, and well tolerated by HIV-negative women. That's a key message in our findings," said Craig Hoesley, one of the authors of the Phase II trial report. "This sets the stage for larger studies to see if tenofovir can prevent HIV infection." Tenofovir, the active ingredient in the gel, is an antiviral drug called nucleotide reverse transcriptase...

People living with HIV/AIDS in Cameroon are against what they describe as government's U-turn on the cost of biological treatment for the disease. Although a decision was made in 2006 to lower the cost from 21 to 3 CFA francs, implementation of the pricing became difficult because funds were not available to continue subsidizing the tests. Irritated by this U-turn people living with the disease demonstrated last week outside the building that houses the national committee for the fight against AIDS. They called for the reinstatement of the lower cost biological tests, arguing that the former minister of public health even promised to further reduce the amount to 1 CFA franc by April of this year. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

The Illinois Lottery on Friday launched a game that will raise money for HIV/AIDS prevention and education programs in the state, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The game, called Red Ribbon Cash, will sell two-dollar tickets and have four top prizes of $20,000. A spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Revenue on Tuesday said the lottery hopes ticket sales will raise $3 million annually, which is the amount a ticket benefiting breast cancer research raised in 2006. According to the Post-Dispatch, all the proceeds will go to support HIV/AIDS programs in the state. Grants will be distributed by the Illinois Department of Public Health. It is not known when enough money will be generated to start awarding grants, the Post-Dispatch reports. Angele Barnes -- executive director of Bet...

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2005 studies (some of the most recent available) found that more than two-thirds (68 percent) of all men living with HIV were men who have sex with men (MSM), "even though only about five percent to seven percent of men in the United States reported having sex with other men." The CDC says that "HIV/AIDS continues to take a high toll on the MSM population. For example, the number of new HIV/AIDS cases among MSM in 2005 was 11 percent more than the number of cases in 2001. It is unclear whether this increase is due to more testing, which results in more diagnoses, or to an increase in the number of HIV infections. Whatever the reasons, in 2005, MSM still accounted for about 53 percent of all new HIV/AIDS cases and 71 p...

CHENNAI: A leading private hospital in Adyar was sued for allegedly wrongly certifying a cook as having tested positive for HIV. The cook, R Mohanan (46), of Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Tiruvanmiyur had been provisionally selected by a Japanese firm in Algeria. His selection was subject to a medical test. He was sent to Malar Hospitals in Adyar, which, after tests on February 23 last year, said in its report that Mohanan had tested positive for HIV. The hospital also declared as its final impression that he was not fit for the job. This resulted in the immediate cancellation of the provisional selection and job offer. There was also immediate and disastrous effect of the report on his family. He and his wife Parimala started suspecting each others fidelity, leading to constant and endless...

The first anti-AIDS vaginal gel to make it through late-stage testing failed to stop HIV infection in a study of 6,000 South African women, disappointed researchers announced Monday. The study was marred by low use of the gel, which could have undermined results, they said. Women used it less than half the number of times they had sex, and only 10 percent said they used it every time as directed. Scientists are still analyzing the results to see if this made a difference. They also plan more tests on a revamped gel containing an AIDS drug that they hope will work better. The gel used in the current study did prove safe, however, and researchers called that a watershed event. But for now, the effort is the latest disappointment in two decades of trying to develop a microbicide - a cream...

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2008) — Although science is known for being a forward-looking field, researchers have found that they can often benefit from a glance over their shoulders. By combining an experimental AIDS vaccine with a long-neglected molecule called poly-IC, Rockefeller University scientists discovered that they were able to significantly improve its effectiveness. Their new, bolstered vaccine not only stimulated the production of HIV-attacking immune cells in mice, but also allowed the rodents to maintain immunity over a significantly longer period of time. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

AMHERST, Mass., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A U.S. study said a protein in the saliva of deer ticks prevents HIV-1 from attaching to the surface of white blood cells called T Cells. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst said the finding may lead to new treatments for autoimmune diseases and prevent rejection of organ transplants, the university said Friday in a release. The researchers said the HIV-1 virus cripples the human immune system by targeting T cells that form the body's first line of defense in fighting infection. Deer tick saliva contains the protein Salp15, which stops T cells from activating by binding to a specific site on their surface called the CD4 receptor. Since T cells initiate the body's immune response to invading viruses and bacteria, this strategy allows th...

Roman Catholic church officials in Texas claim a priest accused of sexually abusing children is HIV positive. The Fort Worth diocese said the Rev Philip Magaldi recently told another priest that he has the disease that causes Aids. Church officials believe the priest has been HIV positive since 2003. The diocese says it has started alerting people who claim Father Magaldi assaulted them. It has also notified parishes where the priest served. Father Magaldi was removed as a priest in 1999 after sexual misconduct allegations arose in Rhode Island and Fort Worth, Texas. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

When Pittman, who grew up in Greenwood, and his wife, Caroline, heard about the widespread suffering in the country, they decided to move there to work at a clinic for HIV patients. We came because we felt that the magnitude of the situation calls for action from those trained to address it, Pittman said. We have been given a lot stable homes to grow up in, good educations, access to health care and life choices so we have a desire to give back to our community, country, world. Swaziland is a landlocked country surrounded on three sides by Sout...

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- New studies show that the use of antiretroviral drugs by mother or baby for several months after delivery can significantly reduce the risk of transmitting the AIDS virus during breast-feeding. One research, presented at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston this week, found that the typical 15 percent infection rate of HIV from breast-feeding could be cut about in half by administering AIDS drugs for a longer period. The study based in Malawi found that only 8 percent of infants who received an initial drug treatment about the time of delivery plus 14 more weeks of AIDS medications were infected with HIV after nine months, compared with about 13 percent of the group receiving only the initial treatment.Read more (Source: The ...

IT'S a simple test. A saliva swipe to the mouth is placed in a chemical solution — no needles or drawing of blood. But despite the simplicity of today's HIV test, many refuse to take one because they aren't aware of the latest testing methods, don't have the time or fear the result. On Thursday, in recognition of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the CAL-PEP — California Prevention and Education Project — van opened its doors at noon along Fifth and Washington streets, making it a little bit easier for people to stay on top of their health by getting tested. "People don't really want to know their HIV status, they're scared to go and gettested," said Sonya Richey, who helped administer tests Thursday. "Here the test is easy. It's just a saliva test and they get results quickly." If...

A non-governmental organisation, Feminist Activists Coalition (FemAct), has declared that the HIV/Aids Bill is unacceptable and cannot be implemented in its present form. According to FemAct, the Bill should be returned to stakeholders for further consultations and revisions to incorporate more views. FemAct declared this in a joint statement to the Parliament signed by its coordinator Usu Mallya on Thursday. The statement says the coalition held the Gender and Development Seminar Series (GDSS) on January 30, this year at the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP). Members of GDSS, Feminist Activist Coalition (FemAct), Tanzania Aids Forum and many other networks, including those led and composed of people living with HIV/Aids discussed the HIV/Aids Bill.Read more (Source: The AIDS...

Mumbai: Couples planning to get married will have to undergo a compulsory HIV test if the government succeeds in passing the proposal in the state assembly. The high-level committee, set up by the state health ministry, has decided to introduce the proposal to make HIV testing compulsory within six months but only after getting the opinion of the public and experts. If the Bill is passed, Maharashtra may be the first state to pass such a law as similar attempts in Goa and Andhra Pradesh failed. The committee unanimously decided to introduce the proposal within six months. Public Health Minister Vimal Mundada hopes the move will create awareness and also control the spread of HIV. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

An HIV-positive British man has been jailed for 14 years in Sweden after being convicted of infecting two under-age girls during unprotected sex. Christer Merrill Aggett, 32, who grew up in Sweden, was also convicted of putting other young women at risk. Aggett was ordered to pay compensation of about 213,000 (2.72m kronor) to 16 victims, including 67,000 each to the two girls infected with HIV. He found his victims through internet chatrooms, the Swedish court heard. Aggett, 32, was arrested after his landlord found HIV medications and pictures of him performing sexual acts with young girls. Aggett, who was born in Britain but is thought to have lived in Sweden since he was a child, had admitted one charge of serious assault and several of attempted serious assault.Read more (Source...

Now scientists finally have discovered how HIV builds one of those fortresses — and they're exploring whether a drug already used to fight a parasite in developing countries just might hold a key to breaking in. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

MUMBAI: Testing for HIV could soon be compulsory before marriage in Maharashtra. A 25-member committee set up by the state government on Wednesday recommended that this be done. But the government will move a bill in the assembly only after a public debate over the next three months. Maharashtra is set to be the first state with such a law as the move was crippled in Goa and Andhra Pradesh for various reasons. After getting public opinions and debates in all the regions the final decision of bringing bill will be taken, said Dr Vimal Mundada, Public Health minister who headed the committee. Though a few of the members raised objections, most were in favour of making the test mandatory. Shortcomings in implementation should not stop us from making a law, said MLA Satej Patil,...

Prison inmates living with HIV/AIDS in Russia often lack access to proper antiretroviral treatment and medical care, some advocates said recently, the Moscow Times reports. Limited education among inmates about the disease, a shortage of doctors and bureaucratic barriers in obtaining medical release in the country are contributing to the problem, the Times reports. According to Alexander Kononets, head of the Federal Prison Service's health department, there are 42,000 inmates living with HIV/AIDS in Russian prisons and jails. Written consent is required for an HIV-positive inmate to receive treatment while incarcerated, according to the Times. Federal Prison Service spokesperson Valery Zaitsev said inmates are screened for HIV/AIDS when they enter a detention facility and usually are scre...

ScienceDaily (Jan. 25, 2008) — In a study that could open up the field of virology to an entirely new suite of possibilities and that paves the way for future drug research, scientists at Rockefeller University and the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center have pinned down a molecule on the surface of human cells that helps keep particles of mutant strains of HIV from spreading. Rather than floating off to infect more cells, the protein contains the virus particles by keeping them attached to the parent cell’s outer membrane, as if stuck there with glue. .Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

.Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

ALLEGED HIV sex offender Stuart McDonald left court today with a smile on his face, having moved a step closer to living on his own. The Adelaide Magistrates Court agreed to consider relaxing the strict bail imposed on McDonald, who is accused of recklessly and deliberately infecting eight men with HIV. If successful, he will move out of the suburban home he shares with a family of four, who say they struggle to live under his "oppressive regime". The ruling comes despite fears McDonald will again have unprotected sex if not closely supervised. "If he were to abuse any newfound freedoms and expose another person to HIV infection, there would be enormously serious consequences," prosecutor John Wells said. "HIV is a major health problem, and the consequences are dire not only for McDon...

The emergency of HIV/AIDS in our society has caused and continues to cause great havoc including the terrible loss of people`s right to life. As a matter of fact, the pandemic has interfered with an individual`s right to life in several ways:The bitter sufferings arising from the pandemic may lead to euthanasia. Euthanasia stands for physician assisted suicide. Although in the past it has been emphasised that human life must be allowed to continue until a natural end, HIV/AIDS has, on one hand posed challenges including a deliberate call to the effect that euthanasia can be allowed to enable critically ill AIDS patients to die amicably with less pain and dignity, according to Godffrey Ijumba\'s Training Manual for Mass Media Practitioners on HIV/AIDS. On the other hand, the protracted p...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted an updated HIV Prevention Strategic Plan on its Web site Jan. 3. It "will guide the agency's HIV prevention efforts for the next three years," Robert S. Janssen, MD, wrote to state and local officials. Janssen heads up those activities at the CDC. The document updates a five-year plan covering 2001 to 2005, which has been in limbo for the last two years. The original plan had set a goal of cutting the number of new infections in half. However, according to current CDC estimates, the number of new infections has not declined at all. And leaked reports of their new estimates, likely to be released later this month, are that the number of new infections may actually have increased, perhaps substantially. When asked at the CDC prev...

Eighteen British soldiers and six civilian contractors who received donated blood from the U.S. Department of Defense following injuries in either Iraq or Afghanistan are being tested for HIV, hepatitis and other infections because the blood had not been properly screened, London's Guardian reports. According to the Guardian, DOD had not tested the donors after the blood had been given to the British personnel. The soldiers and contractors received U.S. blood because they were treated at U.S. field hospitals, according to the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence. All of the soldiers have been contacted (Norton-Taylor, Guardian, 1/11). The U.K. Health Protection Agency has alerted the general practitioners of the six civilian contractors about the incident; however, it is unclear whether th...

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- By using a technique called RNA interference to screen thousands of genes, U.S. researchers have identified almost 300 human proteins that help HIV propagate, according to a new study. This identification has created hope for new treatments to combat the HIV virus that causes AIDS, said the study conducted by a team of Harvard University researchers. The team identified 273 human proteins, which could provide a way to help people with HIV when the virus develops resistance to current antiviral drugs, according to the study published in the latest issue of Science Express. "Antiviral drugs are currently doing a good job of keeping people alive, but these therapeutics all suffer from the same problem, which is that you can get resistance, so we decided to ta...

THE Democratic Alliance in Gauteng has written to the province's Education MEC, Angie Motshekga, asking her to investigate the alleged sacking of a teacher for revealing her HIV-positive status. Lydia Majola (52) claims she was fired from the Julia Sebolai Primary school in Bramfischerville, Soweto, in 2005. This was after she allegedly disclosed her HIV-positive status to her school principal, Norma Sekobo. Sekobo has refused to comment on the matter. Majola told City Press this week that she had disclosed her status after the principal became tired of her constant absence from school. "She used to send people to my house to check if I was sick because she felt I was lazying around at home and getting paid for nothing," she said.Read more (Source: The AIDS Awareness Blog)

The researchers found HIV incidence among young women aged 20-29 was 5,9%, six times higher than that for men of the same age (0,9%). Women accounted for 90% of all recent HIV infections — less than six months old — in the age group 15-24. HIV incidence in the general population over the age of two was 1,4%, with 571000 new infections estimated for 2005. “These findings suggest that the current HIV prevention campaigns do not have the desired impact, particularly among young women,” said Rehle. The study also showed that poor people living in urban informal settlements were at much greater risk of getting HIV.
Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are one of the few cell types able to resist infection with HIV-1 despite expressing the cell surface molecules to which HIV-1 binds before entering a cell. In a study that appears in the February issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers from Harvard Medical School, Boston, show that HSC expression of a protein known as p21Waf1/Cip1/Sdi1 (p21) is required for HSCs to be resistant to infection with HIV-1. David Scadden and colleagues showed that HSCs in which expression of p21 was decreased were more susceptible to infection with HIV-1 than cells expressing normal levels of p21. Further analysis showed that p21 did not inhibit HIV-1 entering the cells, rather it prevented the viral DNA integrating into the host cell genome by binding to th...

I thought this would be of interest to you all. Hopefully this would be of interest enough to make it on some hiv/aids websites. I am shaking my head in disbelief the mainstream media has not mentioned one word of this. Here is the gist of story. There is a doctor in Canada by the name of Harold Foster who made some interesting observations about hiv in regard to geography. In areas of the world that have high soil level concentrations of selenium also have extremely low hiv infection rates. He mentions Senegal as a case and point. Senegal lies in area that has very high selenium levels and also have very open sexuality - the hiv infection rate is around 1%. He mentions that many viruses use selenium as a que as to when to reproduce. Hiv is parasitic for selenium in cells, and when it sense...

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Oprah Winfrey took an HIV test Saturday and encouraged students at her new school and their loved ones to follow suit, in a bid to inspire more openness about the disease that is devastating South Africa's youth. At an open day for families at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, the talk show host promised the 152 pupils free HIV testing, counseling and _ if necessary _ treatment."To be a great leader you must be of sound mind, body and spirit," Winfrey said. "Part of leadership is having the courage to demonstrate true action. Today I have taken the test to demonstrate why it's so important."Winfrey's test results will be kept confidential, as will those of the girls, according to a statement issued on behalf of the Oprah Winfrey Foundation.
Updates: Babies and learning, HIV tests and life and a mom's love

Many of the 100 columns I wrote in 2006 deserve an update, but I've chosen just three to close out the year, on matters of learning, life and love. Of learning: University of Memphis professor Kathy Cooter and doctoral student Susan Reid have an amazing, powerful and free method to make young children smarter. Talk to your infant and toddler children, using "big juicy words," Cooter says. Use long sentences. Make life a narration. Learning is noisy and children shushed into silence, well, it kills their budding brains. Research shows that the number of words a child knows when she's just 26 months old correlates to her academic success in the 10th grade. A child born to poor parents hears 30 million fewer words by the age of 3 than a child born to middle-class or upper-class parents.Read m...

The region's efforts to decrease HIV-related stigma and discrimination should be accelerated with the creation of regional legislation that can be adopted by countries in the region. Carl Browne, director of PANCAP, the regional body that has the mandate to scale up the region's HIV/AIDS response, says the new legislation could be ready by June next year. Mr. Browne, who was speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sunday Gleaner in Barbados recently at PAN-Caribbean Partnership's (PANCAP's) third Champions For Change Conference, said the first conference in 2004 was held to engage parliamentarians who have the ability to influence policy. Formulating policies "In the first year, we sought to influence the people who have responsibility for formulating policies around HIV and AIDS.Read ...
