The 2012 HigherEd edition of the Horizon Report has been released. It can be found here: http://www.nmc.org/publications/horizon-report-2012-higher-ed-edition.
Here is a summary compiled by my colleague at UIC, Ed Garay.
Some key trends:
1) People expect to be able to work, learn, and study whenever and wherever they want to
2) The technologies we use are increasingly cloud-based, and our notions of IT support are decentralized
3) The world of work is increasingly collaborative, driving changes in the way student projects are structured
4) The abundance of resources and relationships made easily accessible via the Internet is increasingly challenging us to revisit our roles as educators
5) Education paradigms are shifting to include online learning, hybrid learning and collaborative ...

The 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) takes place this week in Las Vegas, NV. (In fact, it starts in about 1 hour from the time this blog post is published). It is the preeminent tradeshow for the next shiny thing in consumer electronics and brings together the innovators on technology’s cutting edge. Some of the speakers include Steve Ballmer from Microsoft and executives from pretty much every other big tech company out there. It also features Hollywood stars (I use the term loosely) like Dennis Rodman, Jillian Michaels, Snooki, and even Justin Bieber.
Here’s a sneak peak at some of the many gadgets that will be the star of the show, if even for it’s allotted 15 minutes.

Here we go again! Time to look at potential tech trends for the next year. While it has barely even snowed yet in Chicago nor really gotten that cold, it is definitely December.
This first set of tech trends comes from Jason Hiner at Tech Republic. He reported on the Gartner Group’s annual symposium where they revealed their list of the 10 most strategic tech trends of 2012. Drum roll, please:

Media tablets and beyond – the era of Microsoft and PC domination coming to a close
Mobile-centric applications and interfaces – building user interfaces for multiple screen sizes
Contextual and social user experience – using information about an end user to improve the quality of the interaction with the device

The Taubman Health Sciences Library at the University of Michigan will host the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s traveling exhibition, Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race. The exhibition illustrates how Nazi leadership enlisted people in professions traditionally charged with healing and the public good, to legitimize persecution, murder and, ultimately, genocide. Deadly Medicine, which is cosponsored by the University of Michigan’s Center for the History of Medicine, will premiere on February 3, 2012 on the 4th floor of the Taubman Health Sciences Library and runs through April 13, 2012.

Inspired by Daniel Burnham’s Plan for Chicago, Municipal Pier No. 2, as Navy Pier was originally known, was built beginning in 1914 and opened to the public in 1916. It was designed to serve as a huge freight terminal to encourage lake shipping and as a gathering place for the people of Chicago, with an auditorium and an open-air promenade where citizens could attend carnivals or even free lectures given by the City’s Health Department. Lake shipping never took off as the city had hoped, and in 1927, to honor those who served in the U.S. Navy during World War I, Chicago changed the name of Municipal Pier No. 2 to Navy Pier.
In 1941, just months before America entered the war, the U.S. Navy transformed the Pier into a Naval Training School where about 60,000 men were trained. Pi...

This two-week, online dialogue is your chance to submit, vote, and comment on ideas for improving various aspects of federal websites, such as: content, search, usability, accessibility, social media, multilingual content, and online services. Future changes based on these ideas could directly impact the work government agencies like the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health do every day.
One of my biggest issues with the Internet is how there are still a lot of silos. What do I mean by silo? Programs or applications that work ‘alone’ and don’t share well with other applications. I am still a big user of RSS despite rumors of it’s demise. I tend to star items in Google Reader so that I can read them later. What if I also wanted to read it later and send it to Twitter – or maybe send it to Instapaper? Especially with Instapaper, I would have to go through the trouble of copying the url and then opening up Instapaper and pasting it in there so I could read it later. It would be nice to have this kind of thing automated. I’m not a programmer so I end up waiting and relying on much smarter and clever people to create a tool that c...

No, you’re not imagining it. NLM has indeed made changes to the search box in PubMed and the two related databases, MeSH and NLM Catalog. An X replaces the Clear button. Links are moved from above to below the search box. Advanced Search is now just Advanced. Also, the Advance Search Box now allows one so scroll through all of the entries instead of only seeing the first few terms. For more details, see the NLM Technical Bulletin article: PubMed, MeSH & NLM Catalog Search Boxes Modified. Happy searching everyone!
In addition to face-to-face, email and phone conversations, the GMR employs Facebook, Twitter, our website, GMRLIST and the blog, The Cornflower, as communication tools. Some of our Network members are unable to access the blog because of firewall issues at their institutions. Now we think we have a solution to correct that disparity.
An email notify plugin allows automatic sending of new blog posts to GMRLIST, the GMR’s announcement email list. This tool should help us make sure that posts important enough to share with our members via the blog will also get to those who do not have blog access.
For those of you who might find this redundant, you may wish to filter the messages with the subject: New posting from The Cornflower! Whether getting access to the blog posts for the firs...

The Medical College of Wisconsin Libraries recently wrapped up its Health-E Public project with the Citizens and Organizations Active in Disaster and Medical Reserve Corps of Southeastern Wisconsin. The project was funded by a Public Health award from the NN/LM Greater Midwest Region.
The award allowed us to provide hands-on workshops and both formal and informal presentations for audiences working and volunteering in public health related fields. In addition to providing training on the use of PubMed, MedlinePlus, Toxnet and other resources, we were also able to advertise the availability of LoansomeDoc services to a number of people that had limited or no access to full-text articles.

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM GMR) funded Wisconsin AHEC to promote InformedCaring.org, portal for Wisconsin health professionals. This site was designed to serve those working in local health departments, federally qualified community health centers, and others providing health services in rural and underserved communities in Wisconsin — particularly those without access to academic or hospital libraries.
With GMR funds, we coordinated with 12 public health departments, Community Health Centers, and partners to train staff, share ideas, gain useful feedback, and spread the word about InformedCaring.org. Trudging through harsh weather conditions, we reached 145 in-pers...

Executives of the three national libraries, Dr. Simon Liu (NAL), Sheldon Kotzin (NLM) and Dr. Deanna Marcum (LC), endorsed the recommendations made by the US RDA Test Coordinating Committee regarding the implementation of RDA — namely that RDA should be implemented no earlier than January 2013 and is contingent upon the satisfactory progress/completion of nine specified tasks and action items outlined in the report.
The “National Maximum Charge” that limited Resource Libraries to charging $11 was removed as a requirement for Resource Libraries in the NN/LM contracts for 2011-2016. The change was effective May 1, 2011. As needed, Resource Libraries may raise ILL fees to recover costs. Primary Access Libraries and Other libraries were already able to charge fees necessary for cost recovery. As always, all charges and provided services must comply with copyright law.
NLM removed the $11 limit because multiple requests were received from Resource Libraries, who stated they were unable to recover their costs at $11 per article. Additionally, Resource Libraries were permitted to charge above the $11 limit via surcharges, which caused confusion among network members in regards to the expected charge. The...

Drawing on the collections of NLM’s History of Medicine Division and including works from the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, this initial release of Medicine in the Americas encompasses monographs dating from 1610 to 1865.
Beginning in 2009, the GMR staff held a series of small group conversations with Resource Library Directors in the region. One of the issues that came out of these meetings was the need for a coordinated print journal retention effort within the region. A Task Force was appointed in September 2010 to gather data about library space pressures, print journal cancellation concerns, and related collection issues. Many of you participated in a print retention questionnaire that was sent out in March 2011.
The Task Force has completed its work and we are making the Task Force Final Report available to all Network members.
The Bringing Health Information to the Community blog (fondly referred to as the BHIC blog) was developed by the NN/LM MidContinental Region (NN/LM MCR) about four years ago as a way to provide information to staff at community based organizations and public health departments, clinics, and others outside of libraries that the MCR staff encountered in their outreach efforts. It was also created as a tool to be used by NN/LM MCR members to share information with people within their institutions and communities.
With the new NLM contract, the BHIC blog has moved over to become a national blog, and staff at four other RMLs (including the GMR!) will be contributing writers. The new URL is http://nnlm.gov/bhic/.
If you want to receive a daily digest of the BHIC blog postings, just email Siobhan...

Surprised? The recent symposium conducted by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health on March 29-30, 2011, provided participants with a few such surprises along with an expansive overview of disaster experiences and resources. While medical librarian...

Back in December 2010, I had the opportunity to attend the free Wisconsin Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) Conference. (Link to brochure: http://emergencymanagement.wi.gov/news/2010/2010_VOAD_Conference_Brochure.pdf). Lodging, lunch, and breakfast were provided for those who traveled more than 50 miles, which included me, and was sponsored through state funding.
I decided to go to the 3-day event after e-mailing the conference organizers to see if it would be appropriate for me to be there as a medical librarian with an interest in disaster information–given that I have no direct relationships with any VOAD member organizations. They encouraged me to come, and it was a great opportunity. The Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) Library recently finished its Health Information Outreach to Community Partners project. Generously funded as an Outreach Express award by the NN/LM Greater Midwest Region, the project involved presentations to established PCOM community partners on health information resources from NLM and NIH.
The award funded the purchase of a laptop, projector, and portable projector screen, as well as digitizing hardware and software. The presentations ranged from informal to formal, and the audience size varied from one to nearly seventy. Presentations were well received; I really banged the drum for MedlinePlus and other pertinent NLM sites.

The severe winter storm that affected the Midwest gave libraries in the region a great opportunity to activate their service continuity plans. If you don’t have a plan, this is a good time to prepare for the next major service disruption. Resources to help you can be found on the Writing Your Disaster Plan page on the NN/LM Emergency Preparedness & Response Toolkit at: http://nnlm.gov/ep/disaster-plan-templates/
If you did have a plan, how did it go? Would you change anything? If so, this is a good time to make those changes.

The holiday preparations look especially bright and appealing this year, perhaps in contrast to the blanketing of snow that we have enjoyed so far this winter. Economic reports for retail are improving, with expenditures five percent above what they were at this time last year.
The positive trend for holiday shopping is good news for consumers and the businesses that cater to their wants and needs. Unfortunately, such a positive view cannot be transferred to the current economic state of affairs affecting health sciences and hospital libraries in the GMR, especially in our publicly funded institutions. Revenue shortfalls at the state and local level are having a significant impact on staffing and accessibility of information resources at our member organizations.

Associate Director
NN/LM GMR
Both university and health sciences libraries (HSLs) are feeling pressure with regard to their collection space, with other campus units pressing them to remove print materials and release the space those collections occupy for other uses. Many HSLs have already begun to withdraw print materials that they have available in electronic format. Large resource libraries (RLs) that have not yet taken this step are concerned that they will become the preserver of print collections by default. Hospital libraries are concerned that they will lose access to needed materials within the region. NLM is concerned with similar issues as they apply to the medical literature in general and to health sciences libraries nationally.

The health messages are simple: dress warmly when it’s cold; don’t forget to floss; look left, then right—then left again!--before crossing a street. But the challenge of reaching newly arrived refugees with this basic information is great. Our work in refugee health education is complicated by refugees’ limited English skills, often low literacy levels, the number of different languages spoken, as well as their cultural and ethnic diversity.
In addition to our regular workload, the staff of the Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) of the University of Michigan have been busy with a number of charitable activities during the holiday season. Our staff members have taken part in “Sponsor-a-Family,” a Community Action Network program that provides services to low-income individuals. We have provided age-appropriate holiday presents as well as gift certificates for a local family of four with children ages 17,15, and 2, according to a wish-list that this group has submitted to us.
