Relationship between cooking habits and skills and Mediterranean diet in a sample of Portuguese adolescents

Conclusion: Almost one in every ten adolescents did not know how to cook. Vegetables, fish and soup were found to be foods that nearly half of the adolescents had never cooked. Female adolescents were more involved in cooking than males. Better cooking habits and skills were positively related with adolescents’ adherence to the Mediterranean diet, which reinforces the idea that teaching cooking skills may have a positive impact in future food choice.
Forty days of free school meals as a tool for introducing market-based healthy school meal systems in 35 Danish schools

Conclusions: The established meal systems contained a lack of embedding factors, which is pointed to as one of the main challenges to a user-financed school meal system. The experiences of these 35 participating schools show that a period of free school meals is not a sustainable tool for achieving the goal of establishing new, healthy and user-paid school meals.
Menu engineering: A strategy for seniors to select healthier meals

Conclusions: Nutrition labels did not encourage healthier choices for the seniors surveyed in this study. Therefore, subliminal menu treatments may be more effective than nutrition labelling of menu items for elderly populations. Menu design has the potential to encourage healthier decisions through hidden persuaders, without infringing on the rights of elderly consumers to choose more indulgent menu options. However, menus are not effective tools for seniors who cannot cognitively and independently understand the menu. In certain circumstances, a non-select meal offering might be the best option. The menu strategies used in this study are most effective for those who are able to make independent menu choices. (Source: The Journal of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health)

Conclusions: Nutritional and healthy values of foods were found to be rather weak determinants of purchase decision and food choice. Consumers should have better knowledge of food–nutrition–health linkages and different labelling formats, otherwise nutritional marketing tools are not useful for them in making healthy, informed food choices.
'Do as I say, but not as I do': Are next generation nurses role models for health?

Conclusions: This study indicates that the health profile of pre-registration nurses is relatively poor, and that those who are sedentary engage in other negative lifestyle behaviours also. Despite significant education relating to health promotion and health behaviours of patients being targeted at pre-registered nurses, it seems that this knowledge is not always transferred to their own behaviour. There is a need for timely intervention to establish healthy lifestyle behaviours amongst nurses early in their career.
Social shaping of food intervention initiatives at worksites: Canteen takeaway schemes at two Danish hospitals

Conclusions: Worksite health promotion practitioners should be aware that the intervention itself is an object of negotiation between different stakeholders at a worksite based on existing norms and values. The social contextual model and the setting approach to worksite health interventions lack reflections about how such norms and values might influence the shaping of the intervention. It is recommended that future planning and analyses of worksite health promotion interventions apply a combination of the social constitution approach to worksites and an integrated food supply and demand perspective based on analyses of the co-evolution of problem–solution complexes.
Universities represent an important setting for promoting health and well-being – and specifically for developing systems that support healthy and sustainable food procurement and provision. By drawing on the whole-system settings approach and working within the framework offered by Healthy Universities, higher education institutions are in a strong position to address the full range of issues that make up the university ‘foodscape’, thereby promoting health in an integrated and far-reaching way that takes account of the relationships between environments and behaviours, and between staff, students and the wider community. Informed particularly by work in England, this paper uses a healthy settings model to explore and discuss how the Healthy Universities approach can hel...

The notion of foodscape is increasingly being used within health promotion, public health nutrition and food studies as a tool to describe our food environments and to assess the potential impact on food choice and food behaviour. This paper takes a closer look at the growing number of foodscape studies (FSS) and traces the origin of the idea of foodscapes. It reflects on the different contributions and discusses the applicability within food research. In particular it discusses how the notion can be applied in the growing number of studies that investigate the role that captive eating out-of-home environments (CEOE) in public welfare systems has on the health of the individual and on the sustainability of the environment. The paper concludes that the idea of foodscapes is a convenient too...

Can worksite nutritional interventions improve productivity and firm profitability? A literature review

Conclusions: Well-targeted and efficiently implemented diet-related worksite health promotion interventions may improve labour productivity by 1%–2%. On larger worksites, such productivity gains are likely to more than offset the costs of implementing such interventions. These conclusions are subject to some uncertainty due to the relatively limited amount of literature in the field. (Source: The Journal of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health)

Conclusions: Commercial weight loss programmes produce successful weight loss in the short term. There was no difference in successful weight loss between providers and deprivation quintiles. Age, gender, initial BMI and number of meetings attended are all predictors of successful weight loss.
Obesity within today’s workforce is increasingly recognized as a challenge for both public health professionals and ergonomists. The two disciplines share a scientific, evidence-based approach to practice and now have the opportunity to address a common health issue, namely obesity. This paper shows, through an overview of the current literature, how and where obesity is impacting on the workplace and how the health of the workforce is being affected. Ergonomics and public health priorities have been mapped and challenges suitable for the application of existing knowledge and further research have been identified. Areas of common endeavour, for example how sedentary work may be exacerbating obesity, have been identified as candidate topics for joint activity by ergonomists and public...

Conclusions: The programme, based on best available evidence and clear evidence of needs, provides a low-cost evaluated intervention that permits people from diverse professional and occupational backgrounds to acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to raise the subject of healthy and unhealthy weight with parents of primary school-aged children and signpost them to appropriate local facilities and services. Although developed in London, the programme may be used anywhere in the UK, with the substitution of local information about prevalence of overweight and obesity and about local services and facilities.
Conclusions: The paper provides an approach to implement public health in secondary care. The Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) payment framework would be a useful tool to ensure key public health areas such as smoking cessation are systemized in secondary care.
This article draws on primary research into strategic alliances between organizations in all sectors. It suggests that there can be significant challenges for those working within strategic alliances, given that these tend to be beset by ambiguity and political tensions. In a context of ever greater transparency and accountability, it will be crucial to attend to the human aspects of strategic alliances since these represent significant risk if neglected. Conversely, alliances also offer the opportunity to develop the synergy of people, organizations and communities to deliver greater public value.
Successful collaborations need to get three things right: governance, operations and behaviours. Relationships between consortia partners have a significant bearing on their ability to deliver d...

Background: This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a Dementia Outreach Service (DEMOS). The service is led by the first Nurse Practitioner in Dementia Care in the State of Queensland in Australia and is highly innovative in terms of its mode of delivery. The evaluation took place due to a perception that new models such as the DEMOS often fail to gain momentum due to a lack of data on their effectiveness and efficiency.
Method: The parameters of the project were to evaluate the extent to which the DEMOS met its key deliverables, focusing specifically on outcomes for residential aged care facilities (RACF) residents and staff. The study involved both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Qualitative data was collected through interviews, focus groups and reflectiv...

In this article I engage with some orthodox theories of the management of innovation and change, which take for granted the idea that they can be predicted and controlled. Organizations are thought to be systems with boundaries, which managers acting as engineers, or doctors, can ‘diagnose’ and restore to ‘health’, or order differently. As an alternative, and by drawing on an experience of working with health service managers, I argue instead that change and innovation arise as a result of the interweaving of everyone’s intentions. Organizations are sites of intense political interaction and contestation, and exactly what emerges is unpredictable and unplannable, even by the most powerful individuals and groups.
An exploratory investigation of the risk of pathogenic contamination at selected New Jersey skilled nursing and assisted living residences

The objective of this investigation was to examine the potential risk of food contamination in selected skilled nursing and assisted-living residences using bacteria indicator tests for Listeria spp., Salmonella spp. and E. coli. Of the 45 samples tested for Listeria, three (6.67 %) were found to be contaminated; Salmonella or E. coli contamination was not found in any of the samples. Reported incidents of foodborne illnesses are increasing in institutional settings, therefore there is an urgent need to collect information on practices that can prevent bacterial contamination of food served in elderly residences.
With climate change threatening to present real challenges to public health, the relevant UK organizations, such as the NHS, have produced guidelines and action plans to encourage primary care trusts (PCTs) to reduce their carbon emissions and generally function in a more sustainable way. This paper presents the results of a survey designed to assess how successful this initiative has been in one part of the UK, the south west of England. While the results are promising, the PCTs surveyed are aware that commitment and leadership must come from a higher level.
What's the future for health promotion in England? The views of practitioners

Specialized health promotion is an internationally recognized occupation and field of activity which has had a chequered history in England. After flourishing briefly in some areas in the early years of the New Labour government it has been in decline in most parts of the country. The last survey of practice conducted in 2005 found that the specialized health promotion workforce was unevenly distributed and much in need of advocacy and development. Since then there has been another major reorganization of primary care trusts (PCTs) and a split between commissioning and provider functions. Practitioners’ views on the impact of this on health promotion were gathered in a survey in 2008—2009. Participants comprised 36 people attending a Shaping the Future workshop in the North of ...

An emerging model for publishing and using open educational resources in public health

Conclusion: The synthesis of a literature review and Delphi study has produced a potential model to guide the development of OER in public health. The model provides a matrix where the questions about whether and how an academic can produce and publish OER are answered, according to various risks and benefits to them and their institution. We hope that this will provide practical assistance and encouragement for the academic public health community to create and share OER.
The UK Standing Conference on Specialist Community Public Health Nurse Education represents the interests of those most intimately involved with specialist community public health nurse (health visitor) (SCPHN (HV)) education in higher education institutions across the UK. This paper summarizes issues currently affecting the education of SCPHN (HV)s and the delivery of health visiting and public health nursing services across the UK. Difficulties in recruitment, numbers of practice teachers and tensions created by the gap between expected and actual practice roles for health visitors are discussed. This discussion takes place in the context of the Programme of Action on Health Visiting, which was launched in 2009 by the Department of Health in England. Recommendations for action by HEIs ar...

A qualitative exploration of a health trainer programme in two UK primary care trusts

Conclusions: The health trainer service appears to be not only ‘fit for purpose’, but also to bring with it certain ‘added value’, which was not predicted by the two primary care service providers at the outset. A critical factor in this success appears to be the unique combination of time, the ‘person next door’ and a ‘one-to-one’ approach, which facilitated an innovative and highly productive connection between the health trainer and client. However, participants in this evaluation perceived that the current format and constituents of service performance data were significantly failing to credit the health trainer scheme with the full extent of this impact.
