Vector borne diseases have long been recognized to be climate driven, but it is now clear that many infectious diseases are intricately related to weather patterns, climate, and seasonality. Epidemics of cholera, a devastating disease occurring predominantly in third world countries, has been shown to be directly correlated with environmental parameters including sea surface temperature, sea surface height, and salinity, among others. Recent studies incorporating satellite sensing technology, ground truth measurements, microbiology, and genome sequence analyses, have provided the basis for predictive modeling of cholera epidemics in Bangladesh, India, and East Africa. These findings will be discussed as a paradigm for global infectious diseases in this century, but also as the story of a w...

How does the shape of the brain change with learning? Initial studies indicated that spatial expertise - in the form of experienced Taxi drivers - enlarged the hippocampus, one of the key structures involved in spatial navigation. Whether regional growth or shrinkage in the brain can be induced with specific training administered over short time periods is, however, unknown. The talk will present results of training studies in both mice and men, including some initial investigations using histology to ascertain the cellular bases of training induced volume changes.

Dr. Jason Lerch is a scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. His research program is focused on how the brain changes it's shape, with activities including the MRI of learning and memory, the effect of speciali...

This is the 53nd meeting of the National Cancer Institute Director’s Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG). The DCLG is NCI’s all-consumer advisory committee that indentifies and responds to issues and challenges facing the Institute at the request of the Director. The DCLG provides relevant, non-scientific skills and perspectives in order to improve research outcomes by identifying new approaches, promoting innovation, recognizing unforeseen risks or barriers, and identifying unintended consequences that could result from NCI decisions. This meeting will focus on NCI’s therapeutics development program as well as provide updates on the NCI National Outreach Network and the DCLG Advocate’s in Research Working Group.

The DNA Repair Interest Group is concerned with all forms of DNA damage and repair. As a major defense against environmental damage to cells DNA repair is present in all organisms examined including bacteria, yeast, drosophila, fish, amphibians, rodents and humans. The members of the DNA Repair Interest Group perform research in areas including DNA repair enzymology and fine structure, mutagenesis, gene and cell cycle regulation, protein structure, and human disease.

There is a growing effort to define the human proteome in a manner that will provide reference information to accelerate experiments in all aspects of human biomedical research. Mass spectrometry is one of the most popular and flexible tools to assay proteins in complex samples, and therefore a key part of a human proteome project will be to catalog the proteins that have, and can be, observed as well their mass spectrometric signatures to guide further targeted proteomics experimentation via selected reaction monitoring (SRM). PeptideAtlas is an expanding compendium of peptide and protein identifications assembled from hundreds of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) experiments gathered from the community for several species. All experiments are uniformly reprocessed from the raw data using ...

The purpose of this notice is to inform the public about a meeting of the NIH Blue Ribbon Panel to Advise on the Risk Assessment of the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories at Boston University Medical Center. The meeting will be held on Friday, March 19, 2010, at the National Institutes of Health, Building 31, 31 Center Drive, Floor 6C, Room 6, Bethesda, MD 20892, from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This meeting is the second in a series of public meetings with the National Research Council to review the ongoing supplementary risk assessment study. It was originally scheduled to take place on February 12, 2010, but had to be postponed due to extreme weather conditions on the East Coast.

Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) March 2010 - Day 2

The RAC is a technical committee whose goal is to consider the current state of knowledge and technology regarding recombinant DNA. This includes review of human gene transfer trials, and an assessment of the ability of DNA recombinants to survive in nature and the potential for transfer of genetic material to other organisms. It also considers hypothetical hazards and methods for monitoring and minimizing risks. Approximately one-third of the 15 members do not have scientific expertise but represent public interests and attitudes. This balance is intended to provide a forum for open public debate of social and scientific issues attendant to recombinant DNA research. The RAC has been overwhelmingly successful in achieving this goal.

The Scientific Management Review Board was authorized by the NIH Reform Act of 2006 and signed into law by the President in January 2007. The NIH Reform Act provides certain organizational authorities to HHS and NIH officials regarding NIH institutes and centers and the Office of the Director. The purpose of the Scientific Management Review Board is to advise HHS and NIH officials on the use of those organizational authorities.

This Working Group of the SMRB is convened to recommend to the full Board whether organizational change within NIH could further optimize research into substance use, abuse, and addiction and maximize human health and/or patient well being. In addressing this issue, the SUAA Working Group will consider the scientific opportunities, public health needs, and research...
