January 6th, was the first day of my internship at Visual AIDS. January 6th, also happened to be the day before Postcards From the Edge opened--the atmosphere in the office was fast-paced and (understandably) a little frantic. Even with the initial “sink-or-swim” nature of my first day, Visual AIDS has become a more than welcoming and rewarding environment to be a part of.

At Bennington College each student participates in a "Field Work Term" for the months of January and February, which is how I learned about Visual AIDS. In my hometown of Houston, Texas I worked with Planned Parenthood and a local AIDS Foundation, however, I had never worked with ...

Using the collection of images from the Frank Moore Archive Project at Visual AIDS, I wanted to examine the relation between art and militancy against AIDS. I am particularly interested in the power of art to highlight a cause and to increase public awareness. In the case of the AIDS crisis, art is often used to show the reality of a situation for those living with HIV/AIDS. It’s also use to express how some people living with HIV/AIDS feel. Art activists help bring visibility to those living with HIV/AIDS in our society, and to fight the indifference, ignorance and isolation they face.In reseaching the Archive Project, I saw many images from protest and direct actions of ACT UP - an a...

By Charlotte RodgersThe Bloody Sacrifice includes interviews with tattoo artists; priests from belief systems which utilise blood sacrifice; artists who use their own HIV positive blood as a medium; and those who use mortifications and body modification to effect changes in consciousness and self.Charlotte Rodgers was born in New Zealand, received the PEN international young writers award for 1983 and after many years of travel, fast living and dodgy magick, now leads a life of quiet eccentricity commuting between England and Asia. She creates, exhibits, and occasionally sells art made from road kill and has had articles published in many magazines.

AIDS worker and photographer Azul Mares-DelGrasso documented the Testing USA Tour 2010. His series is viewable at: http://www.azulsinned.com/ and were part of the project's blog: http://www.freehivtest.net/testingusablog/

Last year, for the second time, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation sponsored an HIV testing tour of the USA. From January to August 2010, from Seattle to the Navajo Nation, a team of testers boarded a van to go out and meet people while offering free rapid HIV testing and prevention messages. Their approach is a fantastic way to provoke dialogue about HIV and to explain the importance of testing, especially to those who may not have thought about HIV or had access to testing. In every town they visited a partnership was established be...

• Will African American MSM take PrEP as it must be taken in order for it to work? (Which includes taking it as a component of a comprehensive prevention package that includes condoms, counseling, and regular HIV/STI screening? • Does the general public understand that PrEP must be combined with other safe sex practices to derive the greatest protection from HIV? • Are we communicating, completely and ho...

My name is Julie, a French student at the Paris-Diderot University working on my Master of Sociology, and I have been an intern at Visual AIDS since December 2010. I decided to do my internship with Visual AIDS because I share the idea that art is a tool to fight AIDS and to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS. I’m also interested in gaining professional experience in an American non-profit organization and learning how it operates, because I would like to work in a cultural non-profit organization in France after I graduate. This internship has immersed me in a world of art against AIDS. I first learned of Visual AIDS while during research for my Master’s thesis. The theme of my dissertation was the mobilization of artists to fight the AIDS crisis in New York City, in the 80's. In Fra...

As I worked my through the images in the archives of Visual AIDS, I began to notice a fairly large number of religious images. I found this surprising, but also moving. As I thought about it, I realized that I had simply assumed that most GLBTQ artists, even if they had been raised in religious households, were likely to be secular in their outlook,...

When he died in 1992, David Wojnarowicz, artist and writer with AIDS, left a body of work about the disease that remains unrivaled for its power and beauty. On December 1, 2010 the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC celebrated World AIDS Day by capitulating to the demands of right-wing politicians and an anti-gay religious group and removing David’s volcanic video rant, A Fire in My Belly, from an important and ground-breaking exhibition about art and sexual difference, Hide/Seek. For more information or to join the emailing list contact...

New Mark Morrisroe monograph published by jrp ringier.
from jrp ringier website:
The extraordinarily diverse work of the American photographer Mark Morrisroe has until now mostly been exhibited and discussed in connection with his famous Boston colleagues Nan Goldin and David Armstrong. Like them, Morrisroe documented his circle of friends, whose lifestyles were inspired by punk and bohemia. He finished his studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1982, a few years later than Goldin and Armstrong. He moved to New York in the middle of the 1980s, and died of AIDS-related illnesses in 1989 when he was only 30. Mark Morrisroe's short period of creativity in the 1980s was astonishingly productive and stands out because of its individual aesthetic. He captured his friends...

Smithsonian Gives in to the Far Right, Censors the Artist Who “Spoiled Christmas”
Incoming House Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor called yesterday for the closing of an exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery that features work with sexual themes and a video about the AIDS epidemic in Latin American culture that includes 11 seconds of ants crawling on a Christ figure. It is based on the belief that HIV-positive people should pick up their own cameras and make their own artistic statements. In doing so, they create powerful tools for combating stigma, which is one of the most formidable barriers in reducing the spread of AIDS today.Through Positive Eyes has been produced in Mexico City (August 2008), Rio de Janeiro (June 2009), and Johannesburg (March 2010). Next, the project will travel to Chennai, Kiev, and New York City. The project is co-directed by London-based South African photographer and AIDS activist Gideon Mendel, who has been chronicling HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1993. Since then his groundbreaking work on the issue has been widely recognized. Thro...

A few months ago I wrote a lengthy piece about Visual AIDS’s latest
broadside PLAY SMART. After some feedback from a friend I edited it
down to be a more suitable, shorter, blog length.
What was published was a focused critique regarding issues of
representation within PLAY SMART. What I edited out was nuances, and
questions about context, the complexity of creating a campaign for
unknown audiences and praise for past Visual AIDS broadsides which I
compared to PLAY SMART.I made a mistake in editing the piece. Too much was lost, the piece
came across as confrontational rather than promoting conversation, gone
was the opportunity to discuss the difficulty in making and
disseminating gay men’s hea...

A Selection of Snapshots Taken by Felix Gonzalez-TorresBook Launch @ Printed Matter: Thursday, May 6, 2010, 5-7 PMThis book presents a selection of snapshots, and accompanying inscriptions, sent by Felix Gonzalez-Torres to Doug Ashford, Julie Ault, Bill Bartman, Susan Cahan, Amada Cruz, David Deitcher, Suzanne Ghez, Ann Goldstein, Claudio González, Jim Hodges, Susan Morgan, Robert Nickas, Mario Nuñez, and Christopher Williams between the years 1991–1995. The snapshots are quick poetic communiqués, a visual report on Felix's outlook at particular moments in time, small gestures of hope, pleasure, and desire. They give evidence to some of his multiple fascinations: pets, furniture, collectible dolls, politics, art, friendship, beauty, love and optimism.Published by A.R.T. Press, and edi...

Every month, Visual AIDS invites guest curators, drawn from both the arts and AIDS communities, to select several works from the Frank Moore Archive Project. This month, Marisa Cardinale curates the artwork of Archive Members; Joe Brainard, Valerie Caris, Jonathan Leiter, Joseph Modica, Frank Moore, Mooshka, Chuck Nanney, Eric Rhein, Frederick Weston and David Wojnarowicz. View WEB GALLERY here. From the Curator's Statement:I approached my visit to the Visual AIDS archive with some trepidation but a firmly open mind. I knew I would see work by friends who had died. When that happens by chance, maybe turning a corner at an exhibition, or catching sight of a title on the spine of a book in a store, or once on the tee-shirt of a young person walking towards me on the street, when it c...

in New York City and Houston, Texas. Moving deftly among large-scale
