Core Training

Cardiovascular exercise should be part of every woman’s
routine. Physical fitness is key to a long healthy life and to better
satisfaction with yourself and relationships. For best results, engage in an
exercise that raises your heart rate for 30 minutes to 1 hour daily. Improved
exercise endurance can have great benefit in the bedroom. By increasing your
body’s tolerance for prolonged workouts, you will have the sustaining power to
enjoy sex longer.

In addition to improving your stamina by raising your heart rate, core training and weight lifting should be integrated into your better sex workout. The core ...

Regular cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercises are
recommended to improve overall health and well-being. Physical fitness
resulting from regular exercise leads to improved body image and self-esteem as

performance and enjoyment in the bedroom.

Not only does exercise improve your sexual performance, it
can actually increase arousal. A study from the journal Behavior Research and
Therapy demonstrates that immediately following exercise, women have increased
sympathetic nervous system response and heightened blood flow to the vagina. Simply
put, exercise can lead to better lubrication and orgasm during sex.

Dr. Jennifer Young and Dr. Gweneth Lazenby traveled to
Arusha, Tanzania May 31st - June 19th for the purpose of
completing an on-going study on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as part of a
research team from the University of Virginia Cancer Center in Charlottesville,
Virginia. HPV is a virus which causes cervical, anal, and oral cancers.

The team saw a total of 324 women in a 10 day period at
Selian Lutheran Hospital outside of Arusha. Most patients were from rural areas surrounding Arusha, a

This discussion is going to be limited to reversible birth control methods, meaning ways to prevent pregnancy that c...

Believe it or not, this is a very popular question. And just a reminder: there is no such thing as a dumb question. This statement is even more applicable in medicine than in a classroom. This description is how it normally happens. There are exceptions to every rule. If the below information doesn’t sound like you or you have more questions, then you need to see your doctor. When Dr. Jennifer Young finished her fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology, she traveled to rural Tanzania to participate in a cooperative research project with her former colleagues in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Virginia. While in Tanzania, Dr. Young continued her research on cervical cancer screening. What she observed was that cancer of the cervix tends to be diagnosed in its later stages when it’s less treatable.

Cervical cancer is responsible for a large proportion of female deaths worldwide due to poor screening, and disproportionately afflicts women in developing countries. In Tanzania, cervical cancer ranks as the first most frequent cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age. Screening and timely...

Patients undergoing cancer therapy are faced with many difficult side effects and changes in their bodies. For women, a frequent but unexpected side effect of cancer therapy is painful intercourse. Painful intercourse or dyspareunia may result from physical changes in the vagina following radiation and/or surgery or a depletion of the female hormone, estrogen, which can cause vaginal dryness. Female patients receiving certain chemotherapy agents may be at risk for premature menopause due to the effect of medication(s). Women with cancers of the cervix, uterus, ovaries, or vagina/vulva may undergo radical surgery or radiation, which leads to scarring and narrowing of the vagina. During treatment, most women and physicians are concerned with their battle against cancer, and there is ra...

A lot has happened in the last year in women’s health.

In October of 2009, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, Gardasil®, was approved for males between the ages of 9 to 26.
Women's health involves many issues that are unique. We learn about these unique issues through research studies. For example, recent research has taught us about early detection of cervical cancer, concerns about hormone replacement therapy, urinary incontinence, risk factors for preterm labor, the importance of mammograms and prevention of osteoporosis. These sorts of studies help all women. In fact, every one of us has benefited in some way from research.

It is important that your physician and nurses know about the latest research. When your physician is also a researcher, she or he has access to the most current information and treatments. Often, they will know about the research results before they are announced to the public. This translates into improved health care fo...

- Dr. (Christi) Geier is WONDERFUL! She was able to diagnosis a problem, start treatment and my husband and I were able to have our son in November! She is the first MD of 7 in the area to listen and act!

- (Nurse) Margie at East Cooper Women's Center is wonderful! She shows concern for her patients and always listens with a smile!

- Anne (Brand) @ Northwoods is great! She makes you feel comfortable & is very helpful.

- I always get a return call within the hour.

- Dr. (James) Carter is simply the best - it's not common for a woman to actually look forward to an annual GYN exam. Dr. Carter is the epitome of a caring, easy to talk to, professional. I love the entire staff.

- Dr. David Soper is a wonderful doctor (I would recommend him to anyone).

The Lowdown on STD’s: Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the third most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. It is the most common bacteria causing an STI. According to a 2007 Center for Disease Control report, South Carolina ranks 3rd out of the 50 states in chlamydial infections. Those at most risk of infection are single, minority women between ages 15-21 with new or multiple sexual partners. However, Chlamydia affects women and men of all backgrounds.

Like all sexually transmitted infections, Chlamydia enters a woman’s body during intercourse. Chlamydia trachomatis is different from most bacteria in that it must live inside cells, making it difficult to grow in a culture. In this way, it is more similar to a virus...

Every year, more than half a million babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. Babies who survive often face serious health challenges and can suffer from lasting disabilities.

November is Prematurity Awareness Month, Nov. 17 is Prematurity Awareness Day, and MUSC is partnering with the March of Dimes to protect our smallest patients and reduce the rate of premature birth.

There are several contributing factors to premature birth, such as women of childbearing age who are uninsured and those who smoke. Recommendations for improvement are given in each of these areas, for example, federal and state support of smoking cessation as part of maternity care. Another key recommendation is for hospitals and health care professionals to voluntarily assess C...

- I was very worried and the office was helpful getting me in to see Dr. Pound during the time I would be home from college.

- Should the need arise; I would not hesitate ONE SECOND to recommend Dr. Kohler!

- Dr. Savatiel was EXCELLENT for my first prenatal visit. She was very warm and was willing to share her extra time with me and my family.

- Amelia Rowland was very good to me and took very good care of me during my pregnancy.

- I have every confidence in Dr. Swift and his staff! Thank you for your knowledgeable and efficient "Women's Health Center."
