FDA Issues Public Health Notification on Test Strips

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert to users of home blood glucose meters to a potential problem with test strip accuracy involving meters using GDH-PQQ (glucose dehydrogenase pyrroloquinoline quinone) technology.

It's important to note that while the FDA notice involves a wide range of home glucose monitor brands, it only impacts a small subset of patients - those who are on certain drug therapies containing non-glucose sugars (such as maltose, galactose and xylose). These medications, which are frequently used in peritoneal dialysis patients and in surgery, can cause false highs on GDH-PQQ test strips.

If you have questions or concerns about the FDA warning, contact your doctor or diabetes educator. You can also read the official FDA notice for more information.

According to the company, about 2% of the infusion sets with this lot number "do not allow the insulin pump to vent.
March 24, 2009 is Diabetes Alert Day!

Diabetes Alert Day is held every year on the fourth Tuesday of March to call attention to diabetes and to encourage everyone to find out if they are at risk. While diabetes is often a hereditary condition, it is still possible to develop diabetes even if you have no known history of it in your family. In addition, type 2 diabetes is often preventable through regular medical checkups and a healthy lifestyle.

Find out if you are at risk by taking the Type 2 Risk Assessment and then read more below about what you can do to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes. (Source: dLife Today)

But a life with diabetes doesn't have to be one devoid of fun. Have you met Robert J. Stewart? Not only has he lived with diabetes for almost 60 years, but he's pole-vaulting and living it up! Robert says, "I'm a diabetic and I'm going to live and have a good time, lots of fun, and enjoyment!"

By now you know that people with diabetes have a higher than average risk of developing coronary heart disease, so it's especially important to maintain normal levels of cholesterol, a related blood fat. But drugs aren't the only option for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Some foods and supplements work almost as well as meds -- and without any risk of side effects.

February is National Heart Month, we're talking about ways to lower your cholesterol naturally - and we have a slideshow that can show you how! (Source: dLife Today)

The diabetes community is trying to get the attention of the FDA, and this is your chance to help! There is currently a petition to the FDA for a Diabetes Advisory Council. According to the petition:

"We urge the new FDA leadership to recognize the urgent need for more safe and effective treatment options for diabetes and to reduce barriers to innovation. More treatment options will benefit patients. The disease is progressive. Delays in the availability of new treatments will only result in tremendous cost to public health and the economy. Our recommendation can benefit patients without sacrificing their safety."

If you would like to lend your support to this effort, get involved! Sign the petition!

Diabetes and The High Holy Holidays

The Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah begins today at sundown, marking the beginning of the High Holy Days. The period ends on Yom Kippur, which includes a 25 hour fast.

Many religious observances are challenging for people with diabetes, particularly those that involve food or fasting. For some guidance on handling diabetes and religious fasts, check out the Friends With Diabetes.

This is also the Islamic month of Ramadan, which traditionally involves dawn to dusk fasting. Diabetes UK has an excellent primer on dealing with diabetes issues during Ramadan. (Source: dLife Today)

Blogabetes blogger Michelle Kowalski has started a new job and has brought diabetes to work with her - but no one has noticed yet.

"On one hand this shows that I'm living normally, adding a sprinkle of diabetes here and there without notice, integrating it into my normal daily activities. I'm managing my sugar and not making a big deal of this little slice of my life. On the other hand, shouldn't people notice these little differences between me and them? Shouldn't they hear the beeps and boops of my life?"

The question of disclosure is one that varies from PWD to PWD. How do you tell other about your diabetes? Read about Michelle's dLife, find out about one PWDs decision to tell, and talk about your own experiences in the dLife Support Forum. (Source: dLife Today)

A continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system tests your blood glucose levels every 5 – 7 minutes throughout the day. It can be used by people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. CCGM devices are changing the way some people manage their diabetes - but insurance coverage is sometimes tough to come by. If you want to join the fight for CGM insurance coverage, sign the CGM Anti-Denial Petition and let your voice be heard.

Diabetes is the number one cause of chronic kidney (or renal) failure in the U.S., and kidney disease among people with diabetes has more than doubled in the past decade. According to the National Kidney Foundation, approximately 30% of people with long-term type 1 diabetes (about one in three) will develop kidney disease. The good news is that with early detection and proper treatment, kidney disease can be slowed and, in some cases, reversed.

How much do you know about your kidneys and how they work? Take our quiz to find out! Also, learn more about the prevention and treatment of kidney disease. (Source: dLife Today)

That clacking noise heard around the world yesterday was the sound of millions of people with diabetes putting their blood glucose monitors back on the shelf, relieved to know that the dogged pursuit of tight blood sugar control is no longer necessary. That is, if you read the first paragraph of Thursday’s front page New York Times article on the recently halted arm of the ACCORD study: "For decades, researchers believed that if people with diabetes lowered their blood sugar to normal levels, they would no longer be at high risk of dying from heart disease. But a major federal study …found that lowering blood sugar actually increased their risk of death." This is an exceedingly dangerous takeaway. The bigger story here is what the presentation of this news, not the news itself, tells p...

Usually a trusted source of medical analysis, The New York Times has really blown it this morning in their analysis of yesterday's developments in the ACCORD trial. In one paragraph, health care writer Gina Kolata sets back diabetes education at least a decade by opening her NYT piece with the following sensationalized - and simplistic - analysis:
"For decades, researchers believed that if people with diabetes lowered their blood sugar to normal levels, they would no longer be at high risk of dying from heart disease. But a major federal study of more than 10,000 middle-aged and older people with Type 2 diabetes has found that lowering blood sugar actually increased their risk of death, researchers reported Wednesday."
And the Times wasn't the only offender. Media outlets nationwide tried ...

Today, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a major change in the ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) study - a large-scale North American trial with over 10,000 participants. One arm of the trial, which examined the impact of intensively-controlled type 2 diabetes management (i.e., an A1C goal of less than 6%) in preventing cardiovascular complications, was stopped eighteen months early. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) found that type 2 ACCORD participants at high risk for heart attack and stroke who were placed in the intensive diabetes management group had an increased risk of death compared with their peers who were placed in a less-intensive standard treatment (i.e., A1C of 7 to 7.9%) group. It's important to note that the incr...

The American Diabetes Association has started to acknowledge the evidence that a low-carbohydrate diet is beneficial for people living with diabetes....sort of. In the newly-released "Nutrition Recommendations and Interventions for Diabetes," the ADA says that: "For weight loss, either low-carbohydrate or low-fat calorie-restricted diets may be effective in the short term (up to 1 year)." This marks the first time that the ADA has acknowledged the clinical benefit of low-carbohydrate diets in any capacity, and we applaud them for taking this step in the right direction.

However, for daily diabetes management, the ADA stands firm on its former dietary recommendations, continuing to recommend a minimum of 130 grams of carbohydrates daily. The authors noted that "(a)lthough brain fuel needs...

People who are living with diabetes need to take their cardiovascular health to heart. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for people with type 2 diabetes. It's time to take a close look at the Heart of Diabetes.

According to the IKnowDiabetes.org website, "Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are common diseases and yet many people do not realize that the two diseases are closely linked. Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., partnered with the American Heart Association to create The Heart of Diabetes, a national campaign that aims to raise awareness and educate individuals about the connection between type 2 diabetes and CVD.

Led by Randy Jackson, who lives with type 2 diabetes, The Heart of Diabetes inspires individuals living with the disease and t...

dLife member Ilamamama says: "I was just diagnosed with type 2 in mid-November. I am currently taking 1000 mg of metformin and Byetta, but my numbers are still high (140-180 range). I am scheduled to attend diabetes classes starting January 8 and I'm looking forward to that because I feel completely overwhelmed by the whole thing. I need to lose a lot of weight and also start exercising, but I have no energy or enthusiasm to do so. I'm getting tired of hearing "Can you eat that?" or "What about your sugar?" from people."

Although it's only been operational for less than two weeks, the project already has already collected over 100 images.

Many religious observances are challenging for people with diabetes, particularly those that involve food or fasting. We are in the midst of the Jewish high holy days, culminating in Yom Kippur this Friday. Visit Friends With Diabetes for their comprehensive series of Diabetes Guides focusing on different Jewish holidays.

FWD founder Rabbi Hirsch Meisels is looking for input from Jewish readers with type 1 diabetes who have experience with fasting:
I urgently need some feedback from type 1's who fasted in previous years. How did you (or more precisely, how did your body handle) the breaking of the fast at the end of the day? Did your BG spike? How high? What did you then do? How long did it take you to get back to normal numbers?

Comment here or contact Rabbi Meisels if you would like to...

Recently, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health conducted a study to determine if a school-based prevention program could help reduce students' risks of developing unhealthy food management behaviors.

Diabetes management, with its focus on eating and nutrition, has the potential to create a preoccupation with food. Sometimes this preoccupation becomes an obsession, building momentum until food is almost viewed as dangerous. Worrying about eating the wrong foods and using terms such as “cheating” are unhealthy perspectives that can contribute to the development of an eating disorder.

The combination of an eating disorder and diabetes can be deadly. Do you know the signs? Find out more, and empower yourself with information. (Source: dLife Today)

Fame, fortune, and diabetes. It's not such an unlikely combination. In a world where image is everything, well-known entertainers are often hesitant to reveal their real lives with diabetes. But things have been changing in the world of movies, TV, and music. Celebrities are talking about their diabetes, screenwriters are working it into movie plots, and even the stunt animals are getting in on the action. Test your knowledge of celebrities and diabetes. We bet you'll learn a thing or two!

Diabetes is more than just managing numbers and lab tests - it's also about managing emotional health. Our Blogabetes writer, Michelle Kowalaski, touches upon some of her thoughts as she does the daily diabetes dance:

Not a Care in the World

I read today about a woman who boluses for every jelly bean, grape and kernel of popcorn she eats. And I can’t help but think “why?”

I mean, I know why, but why don’t I have that mindset? What has happened to me that I eat a handful of mini vanilla wafers without a second thought? Ok, I do give it a second thought, but I don’t use the fast-acting insulin that I have readily available. What exactly is it with me that I can’t always bring myself to use that?

I’m a grazer, and I’ve speculated that perhaps I’m afraid. Afraid that I...

Up a Creek

My inaugural season coaching Charlie's soccer team – The R2s – came to an end. The soccer part went well. We scored "THIS many" goals. (Holding up sticky orange fingers) The other teams scored "THIS many goals." (Holding up slightly less sticky orange fingers)

I know soccer. That part comes easy. But managing diabetes when there's 117 various obstacles working against me? Not so much. I often found myself winging it; rolling the dice; holding my breath; crossing my fingers; thanking my lucky stars; speaking in clichés.

I did a lot of research on pumping strategies for excessive activity. The more I read, the more confusing it got.

Is focusing on controlling blood sugar levels enough? That's the question Gina Kolata of The New York Times asked yesterday in a feature story about heart disease risk in the diabetes population - and how high cholesterol and blood pressure remains seriously undertreated. It's also apparently misunderstood. In a recent ADA survey, only 18 percent of people with diabetes acknowledged that the disease put them at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

The big takeaway is that while keeping blood glucose levels under control is important, and may decrease damage to small blood vessels, cholesterol reduction and blood pressure control are key to preventing cardiovascular disease. This may mean adding drugs, like statins, to an already complicated diabetes regimen, but in terms of preventi...

Diabetes can make some of life's more complicated moments even more challenging. This morning's Blogabetes post is from Julia Zegarra, touching on some special issues that teens with diabetes may face.

Eavesdropping

While waiting for Olivia to take her swim test at Clara Barton last week, I was eavesdropping on a couple of girls standing in front of me. They scared the crap out of me.

They were both talking about how they hated having to take insulin because insulin makes you fat. “It’s true,” one girl said, “I read it on the internet.” The other girl was amazed, but believed her readily.

Then they started discussing how they both let themselves run high – so high that their meters just say HI – in order to maintain or even lose some weight. They both said that they ra...

Welcome to the dog days of summer, dLifers! We have another installment of Blogabetes today, with blogger Scott Marvel'sdebut post on the routine of blood sugar monitoring:

My Blood Test Routine

I recently made a resolution. I challenged myself to up the ante on my daily blood glucose testing routine. Seeing some vast holes in my finger stick line graphs, I knew I was due for a kick-start. It started off with a flurry of finger lances and a rapidly growing discard pile of test strips. Since then, it has mellowed out ever so slightly, to a more maintainable pace.

200 test strips per month is what my health insurance allows me. That gives me seven strips a day to use as I will. Give or take a few, for you math whizzes out there.

To keep myself organized, I mentally plotted my daily te...

As the work week winds to a close, the ever-vigilant bloggers at Blogabetes are hard at work writing about their diabetes lives. Today's post comes from Kim, about diabetes and scheduling issues.

Scheduling Woes

My schedule has been blown out of the water by the new baby and maternity leave. This has really bad implications for my diabetes. I don’t test, eat or take meds at regular times. It makes me feel so out of whack, especially when you throw some sleep deprivation into the mix.

The trickle down effects are multiple – I don’t plan meals as well, I don’t cook as much, I don’t get my walks in and I feel cruddy and unmotivated to take care of myself. I think the hormonal rollercoaster must be affecting my sugars as well. It’s hard to tell what they’re doing since I’m n...

Welcome to another post from the Blogabetes bloggers! This edition is from blogger George Simmons. Enjoy!

Being a dad with diabetes can have some affects on your family that you may have not thought about. I always show and explain as much as I can about my type 1 diabetes to my children, but there are times that my diabetes shows its ugly face in their lives.

I remember back to an event at our church when my son was five. It was a neighborhood fair and there were games, food, and bounce houses of every style you can think of. Each of the church members was asked to bring a dessert or casserole to share. Well, one family brought a huge box of individual wrapped Twinkies.

My son comes running over to me and asked if he can have one and of course I said okay. He gra...

Yesterday, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended in a 22 to 1 vote that FDA keep the controversial type 2 diabetes drug Avandia on the market. The panel also voted 20 to 3 that the drug does raise heart disease risk, however, and backed the requirement of a "black-box" warning on Avandia labeling. An estimated one million Americans currently use Avandia to control their diabetes.

In May, the New England Journal of Medicine published a controversial metanalysis of research examining Avandia and heart disease risk, setting off a significant debate in the diabetes community and Congress, and prompting the FDA to accelerate the committee hearing process on the drug.

While the panel's decision is considered a 'recommendation' to the FDA, the agency historically has f...

Welcome to the start of a new work week and another preview from the Blogabetes bloggers. This week, blogger Nicole Purcell makes her Blogabetes debut:

Errors: When Things Take An “Accidental” Turn for the Worst

Ah! It’s a new day and my fasting blood sugar comes in at a sweet 103 mg/dl. “Not too shabby,” I think, maybe feeling a bit arrogant.

I go about the business of the day - exercise, hop in the shower, dry the hair, feed the cat - get in the car for work. Drive 30 of the 45 minutes it takes to get there.

And then I think - caught in a wave of abject panic, “Where is my pump?”

I do the pat down, you know the one. I pat with flat, frantic hands at my bra, my hip, my waistband. And I know then exactly where my pump is. On the shelf in the bathroom, pumping insulin...

Happy Friday, dLifers! Today we have another preview post from the soon-to-be launched Blogabetes, this time from Robert Rummel-Hudson:

My Year of Living Dangerously

I am going to begin this, my very first blog post here, with a confession.

I have fallen off the wagon.

Not the booze wagon; even before my type 2 diagnosis in February 2006, my drinky drink days were mostly behind me. (College was fun, from what I remember.) No, the wagon I have fallen off of is the healthy living, weight-losing, diabetic-under-control wagon.

When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year, my a1c was hovering above 10, and I was about 35 pounds overweight. I was also terrified. I was 38 years old, with that big number (let's call it "thirty-ten") looking in the near future. My own father died at the...

Sweet, juicy watermelon is a perennial summertime favorite, naturally rich in nutrients such as cancer-fighting lycopene, vitamin A, and potassium. Unfortunately, it also packs a big glycemic punch, making it a less favorable choice for people with diabetes. But good news may be coming to a supermarket near you. The United States Department of Food and Agriculture (USDA) reports that the agency's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has developed a new breed of watermelon that contains the same nutrients in conventional varieties, but cuts the sugar content by over 50 percent. According to USDA, the ARS has shared the new lower carb melon with growers, and hopes to see the watermelons "showing up in produce aisles by summer's end."

Welcome to the start of another week, and another sneak-peek into dLife's Blogabetes. This morning's post is written by Julia Zegarra, Blogabetes writer and mother of a child with diabetes:

Mrs. Fix-it

I’m more than a little OCD when it comes to Olivia’s diabetes care. Not in the “must log every number and every carb and every speck of exercise” (because, hello? She’s twelve and doesn’t ask for food any more, she just goes and gets it and exercise? Hah. But that’s another post.), but more in a “I need these numbers to be even,” way.

It’s maddening. Olivia could eat the same thing at the same time and do the same amount of exercise (hah) every day and still have wildly different bg readings each day. And I just want. To. Fix. It. I finagle insulin doses like pieces o...

Here's another sneak peek into the soon-to-be launched Blogabetes! Today's post is from Blogabetes blogger Carey Potash:

The Grape Conundrum

We're constantly weighing things. Weighing grams. Weighing negatives. Weighing the lesser of two evils.

On the soccer field at halftime I weigh the effect grapes will have on Charlie when his blood sugar is 260. I weigh this against the sadness he'll have if he's the only kid unable to enjoy a halftime snack. This one's easy though. I'll never ever subject him to exclusion.

But, how many grapes? I don't like that he's 260, but he's running around like a wildebeest for two hours. He should come down. Right? Well, maybe. He may also go up higher with all that adrenaline pumping. He may just stay the same somehow and then plummet later. I can't bol...

The FDA has agreed with our assessment of the situation, and categorized this announcement as a Class II Field Correction, requiring us only to notify patients of the potential risk MRIs pose to their insulin pumps. Patients should not be concerned or take any further acti...

The blogosphere is a-buzz about Roosevelt Sims, the 65-year old man who was thrown off of an Amtrak train outside of Williams, AZ for appearing drunk and disorderly when in fact he was recently diagnosed with diabetes and experiencing a low blood sugar.

Thankfully, Mr. Sims was found safe and sound, but hypoglycemia being mistaken for drunkeness is in the news all-too often lately. Ask Doug Burns. Do you think that employers are providing enough training to their staff? Where is the line drawn between what is "part of the job" and simply "being a compassionate human being?"

What do you think?

The Story on Avandia

Earlier this week, the New England Journal of Medicine published a Cleveland Clinic metanalysis of research on the type 2 diabetes drug rosaglitizone (Avandia) and the cardiovascular risk associated with the drug. The findings prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a safety warning on Avandia. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the drug's manufacturer, has issued a rebuttal of the study, citing their own "comprehensive and rigorous program of scientific analysis."

If you're currently taking Avandia and have concerns about the recent study, talk to your doctor.
