On March 21st, Play Safe was brought again to NTU as part of our campaign initiative to educate youths on HIV awareness and issues of stigma and discrimination. It was publicised through a series of efforts like flyers, posters, a banner put up outside the auditorium and event listings. An educational exhibition was set up by the Health Promotion Board near the venue so that the undergraduates would be more informed of the danger of AIDS. A large crowd gathered around as the actors began to put up their performance, curious to see what was happening. Goody bags were also given out to a lucky few people. The higlight of the play wasn't the actors, but the students themselves. The nature of Play Safe is to engage youths in role play and to enable to think deeper about the...

HIV: A stigmatized disease?

HIV does not discriminate. Mrs. Iris Verghese, 61, counseled Singapore’s first AIDS patient in 1981. She says: “Straight, gay, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, laborers, professionals – anyone can get AIDS.” Increasing risky sexual behavior is largely to blame for this. In 2001, the number of teenagers diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) was 256; in 2005, this number had increased to 638.HIV can affect anyone. What we're asking you to do is to consider whether one mistake should condemn a person for a lifetime? The UndergraduateSusan* is a 21-year-old undergraduate. She was infected three years ago. Until now she does not know who infected her because she had several sexual partners, While Susan’s parents and her ex-boyfriend were very supportive of her, she lost...

Discussion Topic IThe debate on what AIDS education should teach has been going on for several years. While previously, AIDS education has focused mainly on abstinence, today AIDS education is moving towards safer sex and regular HIV/AIDS check-ups and tests. We'd love to hear your views on this. What do you think is the best way to tackle the problem? (Source: open forum)
