Through hands-on activities, the presenters will help attendees expand their travel horizons with suggestions on how to establish travel mentoring networks, find new sources of funding for incremental costs of dependent care, and advocate for more inclusive policies from universities, professional societies, and federal agencies following models from the Five College STEM Family Travel Initiative and Harvard University.
Travel is a critical component of the scientist’s job description!

He extended his interest to other areas of human health and behavior, demonstrating that DNA methylation is a reversible biological signal that can be modulated after birth and is responsive to...

In many poor countries the Millennium Development Goals for improvements in nutrition and health, especially of mothers and children, will not be met by the target date of 2015. This talk will review progress towards these targets and consider critical obstacles to success. New strategies will be considered to improve nutrition and to accelerate reductions in death and fertility rates so that the global population will be stabilised by mid-century.

Understanding origins must include the origins of childhood. In his newest book, anthropologist and neuroscientist Melvin Konner offers a sweeping overview of how relationships, emotion, and mind emerged from the uniquely human nature of children and how we care for them. It has been said that nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution, and Dr. Konner shows that nothing in childhood does either. An Evolution Matters lecture.

We are approaching a watershed moment in human history, when the number of people over 65 in the USA will surpass the number of children under 15. By the time our children reach old age, living to 100 will be commonplace. Life expectancy increased so quickly that culture has not had time to catch up. But rest assured, these demographic changes will change virtually all aspects of life - education, families, financial markets and politics. To the extent that people arrive at old age mentally sharp, physically fit, and financially secure, long-lived societies will thrive. But as Matilda White Riley so eloquently argued there is a structural lag between extended years and cultural supports for those added years. I argue that among the most pressing needs of the modern world is the development...

March - July 2009
Fee: £80
Venue: Tavistock Centre

We have created a professional development course for students who have completed a previous Tavistock Clinic course, particularly the PG Cert in Therapeutic Communication with Children (D30).

This is an opportunity for those interested in further contact with the Tavistock Clinic, to attend supervision groups that are designed to give participants a chance to present their work in a safe and confidential setting and to explore their role and task in trying to facilitate emotional well-being for the children and young people with whom you work.

There will be opportunities to share ideas and theoretical concepts with other like minded professionals and to reflect on the impact of the work on your own professional development. (Sourc...

Why was it that Mahler apparently never wrote another musical note after his meeting with Sigmund Freud? Why did Michel de Montaigne thank Fortune for having sent him the worst physical pain in human experience? What led to J Alfred Prufrock’s lack of self-esteem and his depression?
In this talk, Professor Winston examines the role of hormone studies, brain imaging, sexuality, research into child development, pharmacology, social science research and psychological studies to see how science might help us understand happiness.

Introduced by Valli Kohon, Psychoanalyst and Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, Portman Clinic

Little Hans was the first case of child analysis proper, even though conducted by Freud in an unorthodox manner, through Hans's father. Freud says little about his technique concerning this case but its importance lies in Freud's interest in taking seriously what a child might communicate and convey about mental states, no matter how unlikely or abs...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a condition in which abnormal cells are found in the lining of a breast duct. As “in situ” means “in place,” this means the abnormal cells have not spread outside the duct to other tissues in the breast. Also referred to as intraductal carcinoma and stage zero breast cancer, DCIS is the most common noninvasive tumor of the breast.

DCIS is most often discovered during routine mammograms, presenting as very small specks of calcium known as microcalcifications. However, not all microcalcifications indicate the presence of DCIS and the diagnosis must be confirmed by biopsy. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has also been used more recently as a diagnostic tool, but questions about the impact of the test on patient outcomes remain. Since the implement...

In the NHS and social care settings, the most deprived and vulnerable clients come from a variety of social, cultural and racial backgrounds, and communities and health professionals need to take this diversity into account in order to deliver the best services to all. Families and communities play important roles in partnership with health professionals and health professionals need to be able to appreciate and develop this collaboration. Similarly, in times of social change and global population movement, health professionals are required to be able to engage with and understand patients from backgrounds very different from their own and about which they have very little experience and understanding. Clinicians therefore need to develop skill ...

The rapid adaptation to a modernized lifestyle, characterized by reduced physical activity and increased consumption of processed foods rich in carbohydrate and fat, has resulted in a dramatic rise in the incidence of adult and child obesity in many nations of the World. Obesity increases the risk for numerous conditions that shorten life, including diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension, inflammation and fatty liver disease and other symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. The precise etiology of the numerous obesity-related risk factors is still unknown; however an increasing body of evidence indicates that genetics and environmental factors play a major role. Studies of the complex interactions among genes and nutrients are beginning to uncover the role of diets in human health and...

During the 13.7 billion years that it has been around, our Universe has gone through a number of personality developments. From its infancy, spent mostly as a fiery inferno which extended across all of space, the Universe grew up through a dark, moody adolescence when the first stars and galaxies began to form, and finally matured to be the complex and subtle entity we know and love today. Through a combination of armchair time travel, large telescopes and clever deduction, astronomers over the past 100 years have pieced together a surprising tale of how our Universe has grown up, and have identified the key events which have made the transition possible. Each working on one of these distinct epochs, Rita, Stuart and Simon will retell part of this story. However, the story is far from comp...

But how do we distinguish ordinary sadness, irritability, insomnia, emotional numbness, or even elation from symptoms of clinical depression or bipolar disorder*, particularly in children and teens? What's going on beneath the surface---in the bodies, brains, and daily living experiences of people struggling with and recovering from symptoms of mood disorders? What are scientists accomplishing in the effort to develop new medical and non-pharmaceutical treatments, or effectively identify signs of suicide risk and best ways to intervene?

The National Institute of Mental Health is sponsoring this symposium to update NIH staff on current findings in the study of ...

What values would you like to instill in your children? Children are easily influenced by outside sources such as peers and the media, but, as a parent, you have the greatest impact. Attend this seminar to learn how you can support and challenge your children to develop responsibility. This ongoing task requires that you understand the developmental stages to create and communicate appropriate expectations for behavior.
Recent studies suggest that autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may occur in about one out of 150 children. ASD is typically diagnosed in early childhood although some of the related conditions may not be diagnosed until a child enters school. ASD manifests itself in many different ways that range from non-verbal learning disorders to pervasive developmental disorders, including Asperger’s Syndrome and frank autism.

What populations are most at risk for having ASD? How are autism spectrum disorders characterized? Is the prevalence of ASD truly increasing?

This forum will address the prevailing theories and current research on ASD, discuss early diagnosis, and options for interventions to lessen symptoms and improve functionality.

Patients with the rare platelet disorder, Glanzmann thrombasthenia, have a lifelong bleeding disorder characterized primarily as excessive mucocutaneous hemorrhage, including easy bruising, gum bleeding, heavy menstrual periods, bleeding with surgery and childbirth, and intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding. Studies of their platelets identified a profound defect in the ability of their platelets to aggregate one with another due to deficiencies or abnormalities in the integrin AlphaIIbBeta3 (GPIIb/IIIa) receptor. This receptor is the prime mediator of platelet aggregation. When platelets are activated, the receptor undergoes conformational changes that result in it being able to bind multivalent plasma ligands, including fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor, that crosslink platelets into...
