This project will increase awareness of the Health Sciences Library at CHRISTUS Spohn Health System through a promotional campaign of library services. This campaign will include the creation of a video for new physician, resident, medical student and new associate orientation; designing a library web page to connect patrons with library resources via the intranet; and taking the “show on the road” to six hospitals.

(Public Library of Science) Cone receptors in the human eye lose their color sensitivity with age, but our subjective experience of color remains largely unchanged over the years. This ability to compensate for age-related changes in color perception rests in higher levels of the visual system, according to research published May 8 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Sophie Wuerger from the University of Liverpool, UK.
(Public Library of Science) A laugh may signal mockery, humor, joy or simply be a response to tickling, but each kind of laughter conveys a wealth of auditory and social information. These different kinds of laughter also spark different connections within the "laughter perception network" in the human brain depending on their context, according to research published May 8 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Dirk Wildgruber and colleagues from the University of Tuebingen, Germany. These in turn split into languages now spoken all over Eurasia, from Portugal to Siberia."Everybody in Eurasia can trace their linguistic ancestry bac...

How Often Does Clubfoot Recur?

Discussion
Newborn foot deformities are relatively common with an incidence of ~4.2%. About 75% of these are due to metatarsus adductus. Talipes equinovarus, calcaneovulgus foot and vertical talus are the other most common abnormalities.
Congenital talipes equinovarus or clubfoot deformity occurs in 1-2/1000 births. The mneumonic CAVE identifies the major findings of Cavus, forefoot Adduction, hindfoot Varus and Equinus. Clubfoot can be mild to severe with the more severe forms being associated with other problems.
The Ponseti method is currently considered the main treatment method with better short-term outcomes compared to other techniques. Dr. Ignatio Ponseti at the University of Iowa developed a technique of serial casting of the feet. Most patients require 5-7 casts changed weekly ...

By screening for prenatal psychosocial stressors, are there improved maternal and child health outcomes? (Amy Kaleka MD)

There is strong evidence suggesting preterm birth and low birth weight occur due to increased perinatal psychosocial stressors. Several studies have discussed using screening tools to reduce these stressors which state that lower numbers of preterm births and low birth weight occur, but no standardized format is used during most initial prenatal visits. During pregnancy, patients are at a higher risk to develop psychosocial stressors due to their vulnerable emotional state, therefore leading to poorer maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Our project aims to determine if a prenatal psychosocial stress screen should be part of initial prenatal visits and how two clinic sites compare with each other when one site has an established psychosocial stress screen as part of the initial prenatal visit....

What posesses 14 programs to invite even more ACGME scrutiny and voluntarily put more stress on their time and financial resources by applying to the ACGME's 4-year Length of Training Pilot? We'll review why we took the leap and describe anticipated and unanticipated challenges, barriers, and some creative solutions as the first required 4-year class is now matched and enters this June. We'll share the pilot's effect on the our 2012-2013 residency recruitment, our current residents' reactions, residency culture and dynamics, effects on faculty workload during this first year, needed program resources, and change management strategies. This national pilot is a potential disruptive change; understanding it from a grassroots perspective would benefit all FM educators.
Blackboard Learn is the course management system the entire Jefferson campus will be using beginning Fall 2013. Although very similar to its predecessor, Pulse, the interface looks different and there are a number of new features that can significantly improve your efficiency.
Education Services is offering workshops to get faculty started with the new product. The first, Blackboard Learn: Essentials, is a two-hour session that focuses on the basic features of this new Blackboard interface and introduces the new feature set, including:

Content Collection (new file management)
Exams and Surveys
Grade Center
Basic communication tools

Additional 1-hour workshops on specific topics will be offered before the Fall semester.

2013 STFM Advocacy Award winner's Special Session presentation on specific tactics used this past year in successful advocacy efforts in Massachusetts that resulted in over $1 million in additional state funding for family medicine residency programs as well as a new state law (Chapter 224) providing for additional ongoing state support for family medicine. Users of this resource will be better prepared to engage in similar efforts in their own home states, which will become increasingly important given CMS' potential federal GME funding cuts.
New bird flu strain requires vigilance researchers warn

Conclusion
This is important research tracking the origins of the new H7N9 bird flu virus, which gives some clues about how it might behave in the future. Scientists are particularly concerned that a future mutation could mean it is transmitted between humans, which increases the risk of a pandemic (an epidemic of infection across countries or continents).
For travellers to China and other countries affected by bird flu, it's important to observe the following precautions:

avoid visiting live animal markets and poultry farms
avoid contact with surfaces that are contaminated with animal faeces
don't eat or handle undercooked or raw poultry, egg or duck dishes
don't pick up or touch dead or dying birds
always follow good personal hygiene practices, including washing your hands...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.
