The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) has released a draft rules-based mapping from SNOMED Clinical Terms® (SNOMED CT®) to the International Classification of Diseases, 9th revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). The map was designed to support semi-automated administrative reporting and reimbursement for healthcare services within U.S. healthcare organizations. The NLM seeks users to “test drive” and provide feedback for the map—which will guide the development of related maps. Now it’s time to kick the tires and see how it actually works for you.
Please try out the searches (especially the all-in-one option), follow the results, compare the homepage sample with ...

Did you know that close to 20% of adults searching online for health information visit Internet and social-netoworking sites to talk with medical experts and other patients? These e-patients are looking for tools to connect and share their medical data online. Listen to the National Public Radio interview with Susannah Fox of the Pew Internet and American Life Project regarding this growing trend.
Learn how librarians can find new ways to engage e-patients and their families with the Pew Internet online presentation The Rise of the E-Patient: Trends in the use of digital technology for health purposes. [da] (Source: Midcontinental Region News)

Professor Rita Popat uses Lane's website daily as the primary portal for her research and teaching needs.
As an educator, Rita accesses etextbooks, especially the Access Medicine/Lange series, which includes several titles on Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
To her students, Rita frequently recommends Lane's exam preparation etextbooks, especially those titles on preventive medicine and public health.

Lastly, when Rita is looking for that perfect current research article or disease topic to use in her lectures, she often turns to PubMed and UpToDate for great articles and background information.

New video urges health care organizations to break language access barriers
Amid growing concerns about racial, ethnic and language disparities in health care, The Joint Commission and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights have released a video, entitled “Improving Patient-Provider Communication,” which supports language access in health care organizations. The Joint Commission and HHS agree that effective communication is a critical aspect of safe, quality patient care. Many patients of varying circumstances require alternative communication methods, and this new video will help health care organizations determine the best methods of care for meeting these communication needs.

This is the True Story of what happened when we received an NN/LM PNR Technology Improvement Award.

It was love at first sight when I met my first portable library system at the 2008 Regional Academic Health Sciences Libraries (RAHSL) meeting at Oregon Health & Science University. Todd Hannon, OHSU reference librarian, handled the introductions to the system, which included a laptop, a tiny but high-resolution LCD projector, a table-top projection screen, and other portable paraphernalia.

The term “semantic web” appears everywhere – in journal articles, in conference titles, and even in new product promotional material. Three organizations, CENDI (federal scientific technical information managers group) , Federal Library & Information Center Committee, and National Federation of Advanced Information Service, are sponsoring a conference to address these questions.

This new guide, released as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Evaluation Series, was developed to assist both philanthropy and the field of evaluation as they begin the process of engaging stakeholders. Program evaluations are generally more useful when the evaluator consults stakeholders about the most relevant questions to ask. Stakeholders are those with a stake in the program or its evaluation, such as policy-makers, managers, practitioners, funders and clients. [RWJF Content Alerts] (Source: BHIC)
