SummaryThe aim of this comprehensive systematic review was to identify the most effective behavioural models and behaviour change strategies, underpinning preschool‐ and school‐based interventions aimed at preventing obesity in 4–6‐year‐olds. Searching was conducted from April 1995 to April 2010 using MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and The Cochrane Library. Epidemiological studies relevant to the research question with controlled assignment of participants were included in the review, if they had follow‐up periods of 6 months or longer. Outcomes included markers of weight gain; markers of body composition; physical activity behaviour changes and dietary behaviour changes. Twelve studies were included in the review. The most commonly used model was social cognitive theory (SC...

SummaryThe aim of this narrative review is critically to evaluate educational strategies promoting physical activity that are used in the preschool setting in the context of obesity prevention programmes. Literature search was conducted between April and August 2010 in English and German databases (PubMED, PsychINFO, PSYNDEX, ERIC, FIS Bildung). Outcomes considered were time and intensity of physical activity, motor skills or measures of body composition. A total of 19 studies were included. Ten studies added physical activity lessons into their curriculum, one study provided more time for free play, eight studies focused on the social and play environment. Studies reporting positive outcomes implemented physical activity sessions that lasted at least 30 min d−1. Several studies show...

SummaryThe current review aimed to systematically identify dietary, physical activity and sedentary behaviours in preschool children (4–6 years of age) that are prospectively related to overweight or obesity later in childhood. Prospective studies published between January 1990 and June 2010 were selected from searches in PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Cochrane Library. Studies examining the prospective association between at least one relevant behaviour measured during preschool period (children aged 4–6 years at baseline) in relation to at least one anthropometric measurement at follow‐up (age <18 years) were included. Harvest plots were used to summarize the results and draw conclusions from the evidence.Of the 8,718 retrieved papers, 23 papers reporting on 15 different s...

SummaryObesity is a major health hazard and despite lifestyle modification, many patients frequently regain any lost body weight. The use of western anti‐obesity drugs has been limited by side effects including mood changes, suicidal thoughts, and gastrointestinal or cardiovascular complications. The effectiveness and safety of traditional Chinese medicine including Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) and acupuncture provide an alternative established therapy for this medical challenge. In this systematic review, we used standard methodologies to search, review, analyse and synthesize published data on the efficacy, safety and relapse of weight regain associated with use of CHM and acupuncture. We also examined the rationale, mechanisms and potential utility of these therapies.
Conclusions:
In this older population, laparoscopic colectomy practice patterns were associated with factors which likely correlate with tertiary referral centers. Although short-term and long-term survival are comparable, laparoscopic colectomy offers shorter hospitalizations and less intensive care. (Source: World Journal of Surgical Oncology)

(Public Library of Science) In low- and middle-income countries, mild cognitive impairment -- an intermediate state between normal signs of cognitive aging, such as becoming increasingly forgetful, and dementia, which may or may not progress -- is consistently associated with higher disability and with neuropsychiatric symptoms but not with most socio-demographic factors, according to a large study published in this week's PLoS Medicine.
The old familiar Community of Science (COS) Funding Opportunities database has gone away.
In its place, you’ll find the new COS Pivot database. Pivot is a major step forward for COS, combining a much easier searching interface with a new profile option for grant seekers.
Rest assured – your funding search still covers all the tens of thousands of opportunities the old database offered. You can still search by title, sponsor, abstract, deadline, amount of award, and more. You’ll be able to get regular alerts, share information about opportunities with colleagues, and track individual opportunities.
But click on the Profiles tab, and you’ll find that you probably already have a record in the database, so that potential collaborators can find you and vice versa. Register...

As students, faculty members and employees of Jefferson, all of us share a common goal — to deliver high-quality care to patients in need. Sometimes, though, we, too, need access to resources to help care for ourselves during defining moments that can forever change our lives.
The death of a loved one or important person in our lives, through suicide or other traumatic event can be one of the most difficult and stressful experiences we ever face. With that loss comes a strong feeling of helplessness, loneliness and lack of hope.
Having access to the right tools to cope with our grief and loss is essential to the healing process. Recognizing this, Jefferson has recently formed JeffHELP, a campus-wide suicide prevention team. The group is currently in the process of determining ways in...

Abiotic stress adversely affects the growth of grapevine plants. In order to study the early expression changes of genes particularly involved in signal transduction upon salt and drought stresses in grapevines, ESTs derived from a suppressive subtractive hybridization approach (SSH) were selected for expression studies. We were particularly interested in the expression behaviour of the MAP kinase cDNA clone identified by differential screening of the salt-stressed SSH libraries. Interestingly, VvMAP kinase transcript showed a differential expression towards salt and drought treatment in the salt tolerant cultivar Razegui. The upregulation of this transcript was confirmed by RNA blot analysis. Our results revealed that the VvMAP kinase gene could be classified as an osmotic stress responsi...

Conclusion In recent years, the refinement of two databases for ADR reporting has increased VA's capability to systematically monitor, track, and report ADRs across its national network of health care facilities. Linking the two databases has further strengthened those capabilities, enhancing medication safety practices and aiding in pharmacovigilance.

Small interfering RNA library screen identified polo-like kinase-1 (PLK1) as a potential therapeutic target for breast cancer that uniquely eliminates tumour-initiating cells

Conclusion:
Inhibiting PLK1 with siRNA or BI 2536 blocked growth of TNBCs including the CD44high/CD24-/low TIC subpopulation and mammosphere formation. Thus, PLK1 could be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of TNBC as well as other subtypes of breast cancer. (Source: Breast Cancer Research)

In this study we present a fully automated volumetric approach applied to serial MRI scans of 12 patients with Rasmussen encephalitis. Methods:  We retrospectively analyzed 12 patients with Rasmussen encephalitis with a disease onset between 2001 and 2008. All patients underwent a total of 66 serial MRI scans including a three‐dimensional T1 data set. The volumetric analysis was based on standard procedures of the freely available software FMRIB Software Library (FSL) and required about 45 min per scan. Furthermore, planimetric analyses were performed on 51 scans as described previously.Key Findings:  The relative and absolute volume loss of the affected hemisphere was significantly higher compared to the unaffected hemisphere. Referring to regional atrophy differences our results s...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

The paracaspase domain of MALT1 (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation protein 1) is a component of a gene translocation fused to the N-terminal domains of the cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 2. The paracaspase itself, commonly known as MALT1, participates in the NF-κB pathway, likely by driving survival signals downstream of the B-cell antigen receptor through MALT1 proteolytic activity. We have developed methods for the expression and purification of recombinant full-length MALT1 and its constituent catalytic domain alone. Both are activated by dimerization without cleavage, with a similar dimerization barrier to the distantly related cousins, the apical caspases. By using positional scanning peptidyl substrate libraries we demonstrate that the activity ...

Conclusion:
Our data suggests that self reports of heavy smoking early in pregnancy could be used as a marker for lifestyle risk factors that in combination with smoking influence birth outcomes. This information may be used for planning targeted intervention programs for not only smoking cessation, but potentially other support services such as nutrition and healthy pregnancy education. Abstract
Ligustrazine, a bioactive component contained in Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort), is widely applied in the treatment of vascular diseases in China, e.g. myocardial and cerebral infarction. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the clinical effect of Ligustrazine on diabetic nephropathy (DN). PUBMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Chinese Biological Medicine Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) Database, etc. were searched by computer and manual methods to identify RCTs that were used to evaluate the clinical effect of Ligustrazine on DN patients. Twenty five studies comprising 25 RCTs were involved i...

Conclusions: Two- and three-dimensional echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging are the major diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of a cardiac myxoma. After diagnosis, surgery should be performed urgently, in order to prevent complications such as embolic events or obstruction of the mitral orifice. Due to the fact that myxomas can recur, regular, postoperative cardiological control is mandatory. (Cardiol J 2012; 19, 1: 105-109).

Discussion
Nutritional problems can occur in all parts of the world and in all socioeconomic strata. Caloric and/or protein inadequacy unfortunately plagues too many people because of inadequate supplies or availability. Supplemental food programs around the world attempt to provide appropriate nutrition, but can be stymied because of war, political instability, economic instability and many other social factors.
The most common specific nutrient deficiencies are iron and Vitamin D deficiencies. Minerals important for essential nutrition include copper, iodine, selenium and zinc. A typical mixed diet usually provides enough minerals. In the United States, mineral deficiencies are usually uncommon unless there is an underlying disease process or abnormal food restrictions or diet. Vegan an...

    Abstract
In order to build a common data pool and estimate the disease burden of primary immunodeficiencies (PID) in Europe, the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) has developed an internet-based database for clinical and research data on patients with PID. This database is a platform for epidemiological analyses as well as the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies and the identification of novel disease-associated genes. Since its start in 2004, 13 708 patients from 41 countries have been documented in the ESID database. Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) represents the most common entity with 2880 patients or 21% of all entries, followed by selective immunoglobulin A (sIgA) deficiency (1424 pat...

Conclusions:  Patients with OA and CLBP used a variety of pain‐related and adjunctive medications. Although, alternative treatments are widely recommended, we found limited use of several of these in clinical practice, potentially due to the source of our data (commercial claims). Further research is needed to ascertain the extent to which such therapies contribute to the total costs of OA and CLBP management. (Source: Pain Practice)

Sitting in his book-lined study, overlooking Hampstead Heath, he appears a highly unlikely candidate for apostasy; he seems more like the Cambridge biochemistry don he once was, one of the brightest Darwinians of his generation, winner of the university botany prize, researcher at the Royal Society, Harvard scholar and fellow of Clare College. All that, though, was before he was cast out into the wilderness.
The same gene mutations linked to inherited, early-onset Alzheimer's disease have been found in people with the more common late-onset form of the illness. The discovery by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis may lead doctors and researchers to change the way Alzheimer's disease is classified. They reported their findings in the online journal PLoS One (Public Library of Science)... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Many medical students struggle as they enter the clinical setting because they have difficulty in integrating and applying what they have learned in the preclinical classroom. In order to address this challenge, active learning activities were added to the Essentials of Patient Care course for second year medical students. This PowerPoint was presented at the 38th Annual STFM Conference on Medical Student Education and presents 1) the structure of the course that encompasses cultural competency, health policy, preventive medicine, epidemiology/evidence-based medicine, and medical ethics; 2) examples of the active learning activities; 3) the formative assessment of students' performance in these activities qualitatively and quantitatively; and 4) the use of these assessment data to improve ...

Naturally occurring native peptides provide important information about physiological states of an organism and its changes in disease conditions but protocols and methods for assessing their abundance are not well-developed. In this paper, we describe a simple procedure for the quantification of non-tryptic peptides in body fluids. The workflow includes an enrichment step followed by two-dimensional fractionation of native peptides and MS/MS data management facilitating the design and validation of LC- MRM MS assays. The added value of the workflow is demonstrated in the development of a triplex LC-MRM MS assay used for quantification of peptides potentially associated with the progression of liver disease to hepatocellular carcinoma.
We present a new version of STIR (Software for Tomographic Image Reconstruction), an open source object-oriented library implemented in C++ for 3D positron emission tomography reconstruction. This library has been designed such that it can be used for many algorithms and scanner geometries, while being portable to various computing platforms. This second release enhances its flexibility and modular design and includes additional features such as Compton scatter simulation, an additional iterative reconstruction algorithm and parametric image reconstruction (both indirect and direct). We discuss the new features in this release and present example results. STIR can be downloaded from http://stir.sourceforge.net.

In recent years, media reports of jellyfish blooms and some scientific publications have fueled the idea that jellyfish and other gelatinous floating creatures are becoming more common and may dominate the seas in coming decades. The growing impacts of humans on the oceans, including overfishing and climate change, have been suggested as possible causes of this apparently alarming trend.

A careful evaluation of the evidence by Robert H. Condon of Dauphin Island Sea Lab and his 16 coauthors, however, finds the idea that jellyfish, comb jellies, salps and similar organisms are surging globally to be lacking support. Rather, Condon and his colleagues suggest, the perception of an increase is the result of more scientific attention being paid to phenomena such as jellyfish blooms and media fa...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

    Abstract
Metrodorea nigra (Rutaceae) is an endemic Brazilian tree of great ecological importance, frequently found in the submontane regions of ombrophilous dense and semideciduous forests. This tree is useful for reforesting degraded areas and the wood can be employed in construction. We developed 12 microsatellite markers from a genomic library enriched for GA/CA repeats, for this species. Polymorphisms were assessed in 40 trees of a highly fragmented population found in Cravinhos, State of São Paulo, in...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

Conclusion
This study has looked at a lot of data and used systematic methods to examine trends in malaria mortality over the past 30 years. It shows that malaria in 2010 was the cause of death for 1.2 million individuals, including 714,000 deaths in children younger than five years and 524,000 in individuals aged five years or older. The results tend to show an increase in mortality from 1980 to peak levels in 2004, but since then a clear decline.
The researchers say that the recent decrease in malaria mortality in Africa in particular is due to malaria control activities being increased, supported by international help. They say that support from international donors needs to increase further if malaria is to be eradicated.
However, the primary aim of this study was to predict trends ove...

Led by researchers at University of Oxford (UK) and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) at Harvard University, (USA), more than 50 collaborators at over 30 scientific organizations around the globe have agreed on a common standard for integrating biological data sets. This will make it possible to consistently describe the enormous and radically different databases that are compiled in the biosciences in fields ranging from genetics to stem cell science, to environmental studies. This collaborative effort provides a way for scientists in widely disparate life science fields to co-ordinate each other's findings by allowing behind-the-scenes combination of the mountains of data produced by modern, technology driven science. This will allow researchers to put data to work more effectively a...

    Abstract
Background: Being small for gestational age (SGA) or having fetal growth restriction (FGR) may be associated with poorer neurodevelopmental outcomes compared to being appropriate for gestational age (AGA). The aim of this paper was to evaluate the existence and magnitude of decrease in neurodevelopmental scores in SGA and FGR infants born at term from a systematic review of the existing literature. Methods: Studies of neurodevelopment in SGA/FGR babies were identified from a search of the internet scientific databases. Studies which included preterm births and those that did not define absolute indices of standardised cognitive outcome were excluded. SGA was defined as birthweight below the 10(th) centile fo...

CONCLUSION: Despite the smaller caliber of the instrument, RFA is not associated with a decrease in the overall complication rate for selective termination procedures. The technique used for selective termination should still be determined by technical considerations but patients should be informed of the survival associated with each technique.
The protozoan Giardia lamblia parasitizes the human small intestine to cause diseases. It undergoes differentiation into infectious cysts by responding to intestinal stimulation. How the activated signal transduction pathways relate to encystation stimulation remain largely unknown. During encystation, genes encoding cyst wall proteins (CWPs) are coordinately up-regulated by a Myb2 transcription factor. Because cell differentiation is linked to cell cycle regulation, we tried to understand the role of cell cycle regulators, cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks), in encystation. We found that the recombinant Myb2 was phosphorylated by Cdk-associated complexes and the levels of phosphorylation increased significantly during encystation. We have identified a putative cdk gene (cdk2) by searching th...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

Conclusions:
The microsatellite markers described here are a useful resource for genetics and genomics in Arachis. In particular, the 66 markers that are highly polymorphic in cultivated peanut are a significant step towards routine genetic mapping and marker-assisted selection for the crop.
AbstractMilitary spouses frequently cope with separation, but limited research reviewing the impact of an overseas relocation when a spouse accompanies their serving husband/wife has been conducted. A search for studies reviewing the impact of foreign postings on these accompanying spouses was undertaken utilizing 12 databases and other resources. Ultimately, 12 studies were analyzed and four key themes produced: functioning of a military family on an international posting, loss, wellbeing and support. Overall, additional stressors are associated with an overseas posting and experiences are specific to an individual and their circumstances. Further research is required to examine the potential relationship between a spouse's experiences overseas and the impact on their health and wellbeing...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Please support the Doctors In Chains campaign for the medics tortured and sentenced for up to 15 years in Bahrain. #FreeDoctors

Source: Lancet
Area: News
An analysis published in the Lancet suggests that that the malaria mortality burden globally is larger than previously estimated, especially in adults. The analysis used computer modelling to build a historical database for malaria between 1980 and 2010. Global malaria deaths increased from 995,000 in 1980 to a peak of 1,817,000 in 2004, decreasing to 1,238 000 in 2010. The data show that there were 1.24 million deaths from malaria worldwide in 2010 - around twice the figure of 655 000 estimated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the same year. However, both the study and the WHO indicate global death rates due to malaria are now falling. A related editorial calls for urgent action to review these data and re-align priorities in malaria control.

Use of glucocorticoids and risk of breast cancer: a Danish population-based case-control study

IntroductionGlucocorticoids are widely prescribed drugs. In the human body, glucocorticoid is the main stress hormone, and controls a variety of physiological and cellular processes, including metabolism and immune response. It belongs to the same steroid superfamily as estrogens, which are known to play a role in breast cancer. However, the effect of glucocorticoid use on the risk of breast cancer is not clear.
Methods:
We conducted a case-control study using population-based medical databases from Northern Denmark (1.8 million inhabitants) to investigate the association between glucocorticoid prescriptions and breast cancer risk. The study included 9,488 incident breast cancer cases diagnosed between 1994 and 2008 and 94,876 population controls. We estimated the odds ratios (ORs) and 95%...

Conclusions:
AMDs have been studied for years especially with regard to interactions between bacteria and the inorganic compartment hosting them. To date, no study reported the role of microorganisms in the recycling of the organic matter. The present work suggests that the strain Q8 might play an important role in the community by recycling the scarce organic matter (cellulose, hemicellulose, starch...), especially when the conditions change. Furthermore, function-based screening of a Q8 DNA library allowed to assign an amylolytic function to a gene previously unknown. AMDs could be considered as a reservoir of genes with potential biotechnological properties. (Source: Microbial Cell Factories)

When two women are eating together, one is more likely to put food in her mouth when the other one is doing so too - while one's food-filled fork is coming towards her mouth, the other one is more likely to do the same within five seconds, researchers from Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, reported in PLoS One (The Public Library of Science 1). Behavioral mimicry, the authors suggest, occurs unwittingly during a meal. Roel Hermans, PhD... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

The 2012 HigherEd edition of the Horizon Report has been released. It can be found here: http://www.nmc.org/publications/horizon-report-2012-higher-ed-edition.
Here is a summary compiled by my colleague at UIC, Ed Garay.
Some key trends:
1) People expect to be able to work, learn, and study whenever and wherever they want to
2) The technologies we use are increasingly cloud-based, and our notions of IT support are decentralized
3) The world of work is increasingly collaborative, driving changes in the way student projects are structured
4) The abundance of resources and relationships made easily accessible via the Internet is increasingly challenging us to revisit our roles as educators
5) Education paradigms are shifting to include online learning, hybrid learning and collaborative ...

Conclusions The use of Tisseel® during LM may represent a valid alternative solution for obtaining hemostasis, reducing intra- and postoperative bleeding.
Furthermore, it may help the surgeon to obtain a rapid healing of the injured surfaces, probably reducing the use of electrocoagulation
and traumatisms.

Abstract Central neurocytoma was originally described as a rare benign neuronal tumor. However, progression and local recurrences after
surgery are well recognized. Stereotactic radiosurgery is another option for treatment of CN. In order to evaluate the efficacy
of SRS, we performed a quantitative systematic review of the available data on SRS for CN. To identify eligible studies, systematic
searches for all CNs treated with SRS were conducted in major scientific publication databases. English studies published
prior to May 2011 were reviewed and summarized with reference to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Tumor local control
was analyzed. Heterogeneity and publication bias were assessed, and the summary control rate and 95% confidence interval (CI)
were calculated ...

    Abstract
The presence of memory impairment and cognitive deficits in the Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and Pick's disease (PiD) has been associated to dysfunction of cholinergic transmission, possibly due to the loss of cholinergic neurons and to the elimination of nAChR in dementia patients. Alternative hypotheses take into account molecular interactions of the β-amyloid peptide Aβ with nAChR, which may lead to deregulation of the receptor function. Genetic polymorphisms of CHRNA7 and CHRFAM7A, a fusion gene containing a partial CHRNA7 duplication, have been investigated as possible susceptibility traits to dementia, potentially useful either to identify high risk individuals or as therapeutic targets. Abstract
Results from published studies on the association of Human Oxoguanine Glycosylase 1 (hOGG1) S326C genetic polymorphism with the risk of gastric cancer are inconsistent. We performed a meta-analysis to summarize the possible association. Eleven case-control studies including 2168 cases and 4058 controls were identified from electronic databases (Pubmed, Elsevier Science Direct, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and the Chinese database, Wanfang). No significant association between hOGG1 S326C genetic polymorphism and risk of gastric cancer was observed in the overall analysis. In the stratified analysis based on ethnicity, still no significant association was observed in Europea...

Area: Evidence > Drug Specific Reviews
Background Therapy with either recombinant beta-1a or beta-1b interferons (IFNs) is worldwide approved for Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS). A major unanswered question is whether this treatment is able to safely reverse or retard the progressive phase of the disease.

Objectives The main objective was to verify whether IFNs treatment in Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS) is more effective than placebo in reducing the number of patients who experience disability progression.

Search methods We searched the Cochrane Multiple Sclerosis Group's Trials Register (1995 to 15 February 2011), the reference lists of relevant articles and conference proceedings. Area: Evidence > Drug Specific Reviews
Background Intracutaneous or subcutaneous injection of sterile water is rapidly gaining popularity as a method of pain relief in labour and it is therefore essential that it is properly evaluated. Adequate analgesia in labour is important to women worldwide. Sterile water injection is inexpensive, requires basic equipment, and appears to have few side effects. It is purported to work for labour pain.

Chemoprevention has been acknowledged as an important and practical strategy for the management of skin cancer. Quercetin-3-methyl ether, a naturally occurring compound present in various plants, has potent anticancer-promoting activity. We identified this compound by in silico virtual screening of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Database using extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 (ERK2) as the target protein. Here, we showed that quercetin-3-methyl ether inhibited proliferation of mouse skin epidermal JB6 P+ cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner by inducing cell cycle G2–M phase accumulation. It also suppressed 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced neoplastic cell transformation in a dose-dependent manner. Its inhibitory effect was greater than quercetin.
In conclusion, this study provided detailed information on Lactobacillus species colonizing the vagina of healthy Chinese fertile and postmenopausal women. The study also showed that the diversity of Lactobacillus species in fertile women was higher than in postmenopausal women. According to our study, different techniques such as species-specific PCR and clone library resulted in different findings regarding species prevalence. This fact lightens the importance of standardization of techniques used for evaluation of bacterial communities. According to our findings regarding species associations, L. iners and L. gasseri may have influences on colonization and proliferation of other vaginal Lactobacillus species.

We describe here the isolation of an EGFL7-specific antibody from a mammalian cell-based full-length antibody display library generated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Using a novel vector, contained glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor and restriction enzyme sites NheI and ClaI, antibody libraries are displayed as whole IgG molecules on the cell surface and screened for specific antigen binding by a combination of magnetic beads and measured by cell ELISA. Anti-EGFL7 antibody was successfully isolated from the library. The mammalian cell-based full-length antibody display library is a great potential application for rapid identification and cloning of human mAbs of targeting hepatocellular carcinoma.

Chronicle of Higher Education: The latest development in the controversy concerning open access to scholarly research is the boycott of Elsevier, the world's largest scientific journal publisher. By Tuesday evening about 2400 scientists had signed an online pledge not to publish or do any editorial work for the company's journals, writes Josh Fischman for the Chronicle of Higher Education. It began with an irate blog post on 21 January by Timothy Gowers, a mathematician at the University of Cambridge. The boycotters claim that Elsevier charges too much for journal content, that its bundling of subscriptions forces libraries to pay for journals they don't want in order to get the ones they do, and that the company is a strong supporter of the Research Works Act. Abstract
The ubiquitin/proteasome pathway plays an important role in gametogenesis. Ubiquitin/ribosomal fusion protein is the precursor of mono-ubiquitin. We identified two ubiquitin/ribosomal fusion proteins genes in testis of Eriocheir sinensis. The ubiquitin-ribosomal proteins S27 and L40 are denoted as UBS27 and UBL40, respectively. The full length Es-UBS27 cDNA (565 bp) was cloned using PCR, based upon an initial expressed sequence tag (EST) isolated from a testicular cDNA library and the result of 3' RACE. The sequence contained a 465-nucleotide open reading frame (ORF) that encoded a protein of 154 amino acids. It contained a Ubiquitin (UB) domain and the ribosomal protein S27. The full-length Es-UBL40 cDNA (521 bp) cont...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best January Sales in the UK.

    Abstract
The polymorphisms of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) gene have been suggested to be linked to increase risk of essential hypertension in multiple populations. However, the results are still debatable. To assess the association between ACE2 G8970A genetic polymorphism and essential hypertension, we conducted a meta-analysis of case-control studies across different ethnicity. PubMed, Embase, CBM, Wanfang and VIP databases were searched, and a total of 11 separate studies in females and nine separate studies in males met the inclusion criteria. Because ACE2 is on the X chromosome, data for each sex were analyzed separately. The selected studies contained 7,251 (4,472 females/2,779 males) h...

Comparison of Inside-Out and All-Inside Techniques for the Repair of Isolated Meniscal Tears: A Systematic Review

Conclusion: There are no differences in clinical failure rate or subjective outcome between inside-out and all-inside meniscus repair techniques. Complications are associated with both techniques. More nerve symptoms are associated with the inside-out repair and more implant-related complications are associated with the all-inside technique.
Clinical Relevance: Rates of structural healing and complications are comparable for inside-out and all-inside repair techniques for isolated meniscal injury. Differences in observed healing rates after meniscal repair may be more dependent on tear pattern and associated anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction rather than an inside-out versus all-inside surgical approach.
An assessment of the accuracy and availability of data in electronic patient tracking systems for patients receiving HIV treatment in central Mozambique

Conclusions:
Electronic patient tracking systems have been deployed to respond to the growing monitoring, evaluation and reporting requirements. In our cross-sectional study of clinics in Manica and Sofala provinces of Mozambique, we found high levels of completeness and reliability for key variables indicating that these electronic databases provided adequate data not only for monitoring and evaluation but also for research. Routine evaluations of the completeness and reliability of these databases need to occur to ensure high quality data are being used for reporting and research.
Gene regulatory networks that govern hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and leukemia-initiating cells (L-ICs) are deeply entangled. Thus, the discovery of compounds that target L-ICs while sparing HSC is an attractive but difficult endeavor. Presently, most screening approaches fail to counter-screen compounds against normal hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). Here, we present a multistep in vitro and in vivo approach to identify compounds that can target L-ICs in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A high-throughput screen of 4000 compounds on novel leukemia cell lines derived from human experimental leukemogenesis models yielded 80 hits, of which 10 were less toxic to HSPC. We characterized a single compound, kinetin riboside (KR), on AML L-ICs and HSPCs. KR demonstrated comparable effic...

Opioids are the mainstay of treatment for moderate to severe pain. However, opioid therapy in the elderly is often associated with significant morbidity because of excessive ventilatory depression. The large amount of interindividual variability in opioid dose-response relationships makes it difficult to individualise the dose and dosing interval to provide safe and effective analgesia. By examining how aging affects the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of opioids, it is possible to provide a rational basis for age adjustment in opioid dosing.
Authors conclude that 'simulations with PK-PD models confirm the clinical impression that elderly patients n...

Conclusion:  Outpatient GEM could effectively reduce growth of BOM and medical utilization for relatively healthy elderly patients in Taiwan where elderly patients haverelatively free access to general and specialty care. The results of this study implied the potential benefits of systematically implementing GEM in primary health‐care settings to improve the quality of care and slow down the growth of BOM for elderly patients.
