Do webcomics use an 'emergent system'? Maybe not but it's enough for Dean Burnett to shoehorn an interview with the authors/artists/web gurus behind Exterminatus Now in the Guardian science sectionWebcomics are increasingly widespread and popular. It could be argued their proliferation is linked to the decline of print comics, in the same way that free news sites and blogging are often blamed for the decline in newspapers. Webcomics don't get nearly as much mainstream publicity though (at least none that I've seen). Even the more popular examples like XKCD seemingly go largely unmentioned in other media formats, despite their considerable success.Webcomics are interesting from a scientific perspective.
NIZIP, Turkey — More has to be done to ensure the health and wellbeing of women and children affected by the Syrian conflict, said Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the UNFPA, on a recent visit to Turkey's Nizip refugee camp, about 40km east of the southern city of Gaziantep. One of Turkey's newest camps, Nizip houses some 10,000 refugees, or "guests" as the government prefers to call them, in white canvas tents and containers arrayed in neat numbered rows along the rocky, sun-bleached banks of the Euphrates.
What effect does European Union membership have on science and research? And what would it mean if the UK left?A recent edition of the BBC Radio 4 science programme "Material World" fulfilled current BBC policy by including a member of UKIP. Roger Helmer MEP was in discussion with Professor Ed Hinds, from Imperial, about the effects of EU membership, or lack of it, on research. I was also there, to talk about pear-shaped nuclei and electric dipole moments.Ed is a world expert on electric dipole moments, and I am the UK representative on the CERN Council European Strategy Group (our draft strategy will hopefully be adopted in Brussels next week). So we both had things to say about each other's topic.I know from experience that applying for, and spending, EU research funds used to be very bu...

Background:
Khat is a well-known natural stimulant from the Catha edulis plant and is widely used in certain Red Sea countries, including Yemen and the province of Jazan in Saudi Arabia. Jazan is located in the southwestern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia adjacent to Yemen, where the practice of khat chewing is deeply rooted throughout the entire population. The main objective of this paper was to assess the association between family background, i.e., parent and sibling khat use, and adolescents' khat chewing behavior in Jazan. Other variables were also tested for association, including parents' education levels, family income, and peer influence.Material and methodsA cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample (n = 4,100) of intermediate and upper secondary schoo...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

In the present study, it was aimed to determine the effects of cement dust pollution on contents of some significant essential elements (P, S, K, Ca, Fe and Cl) in wild plants (Medigago varia, Anchusa leptophylla, Euphorbia orientalis, Lactuca serriola, Artemisia spicigera, Crambe orientalis, Convolvulus sepium and Senecio vernalis) using wavelength-dispersive spectrometer X-ray fluorescence technique. Plant samples were collected from different locations around a cement factory which is located at Askale about 50 km from Erzurum (Turkey). The element contents in the plant specimens that existed in both 0–100 m (dense dusted) and 2000 m (undusted) areas were compared. P, S, K and Cl contents were found to be high in the plants growing in areas 0–100 m from t...

Conclusion:
PLANEX provides a correlation database, a cluster network and an interpretation of enrichment test results for eight plant species. A typical co-expressed gene generates lists of co-expression data that contain hundreds of genes of interest for enrichment analysis. Also, co-expressed genes can be identified and cataloged in terms of comparative genomics by using the 'Co-expression gene compare' feature. This type of analysis will help interpret experimental data and determine whether there is a common term among genes of interest. (Source: BMC Plant Biology - Latest articles)

This study included a luteinized granulosa cell model as these cells were collected from women who were hyperstimulated with gonadotrophins. The results obtained may not fully extrapolate to non-luteinized granulosa cells.

WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
Leptin may program abnormal AMH signaling, thereby resulting in ovarian dysfunction. This study opens a new perspective for understanding the low ovarian reserve seen in obese women and provides new insights into potential mechanisms that explain the lower AMH seen in obese women. Whether our findings explain the worse response to ovulation induction observed in obese women needs to be further elucidated.

STUDY FUNDING/COMPETING INTERESTS
The study was funded by New England Fertility Society Fellowship Award and Ferring Pharmaceutical...

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to implement accurate methods of detection and classification of benign and malignant breast masses in mammograms. Our new proposed method, which can be used as a diagnostic tool, is denoted Local Seed Region Growing–Spherical Wavelet Transform (LSRG–SWT), and consists of four steps. The first step is homomorphic filtering for enhancement, and the second is detection of the region of interests (ROIs) using a Local Seed Region Growing (LSRG) algorithm, which we developed. The third step incoporates Spherical Wavelet Transform (SWT) and feature extraction. Finally the fourth step is classification, which consists of two sequential components: the 1st classification distinguishes the ROIs as either mass or non-mass and the 2nd classification distingu...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

Abstract
Actinobacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of yam plants from agricultural fields from Yeoju, South Korea and analyzed for their genetic and plant‐beneficial functional diversity. A total of 29 highly occurring actinobacterial isolates from the yam rhizosphere were screened for various plant‐beneficial traits such as antimicrobial activity on fungi and bacteria; biocontrol traits such as production of siderophore, protease, chitinase, endo‐cellulase, and β‐glucanase. The isolates were also screened for plant growth‐promoting (PGP) traits such as auxin production, phosphate solubilization, 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, and in vitro Arabidopsis growth promotion. 16S rDNA sequence‐based phylogenetic analysis was carried out ...

In this work, the purification and characterization of an extracellular elicitor protein, designated AsES, produced by an avirulent isolate of the strawberry pathogen Acremonium strictum, are reported. The defense eliciting activity present in culture filtrates was recovered and purified by ultrafiltration (cutoff, 30 kDa), anionic exchange (Q-Sepharose, pH 7.5), and hydrophobic interaction (phenyl-Sepharose) chromatographies. Two-dimensional SDS-PAGE of the purified active fraction revealed a single spot of 34 kDa and pI 8.8. HPLC (C2/C18) and MS/MS analysis confirmed purification to homogeneity. Foliar spray with AsES provided a total systemic protection against anthracnose disease in strawberry, accompanied by the expression of defense-related genes (i.e. PR1 and Chi2-1). Accumulation o...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

In their letter (15 May), condemning Professor Hawking for not going to a conference in Israel, professors Michael Yudkin and Denis Noble state that the international code that governs the conduct of all scientists requires them to refrain from discrimination "based on such factors as ethnic origin, religion, citizenship, language, political or other opinion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age" (statute 5 of the International Council for Science). I think that they are being a little ingenuous. I have been attending scientific meetings and congresses in all parts of the world for over 50 years, and have even organised a few; I have never heard of ICSU, nor have I ever heard that as a scientist I am bound by their code of conduct.
ZA'ATARI, Jordan — In a tent hospital bed, a Syrian woman who was four months pregnant when she fled her country's civil war cradles one of the newest residents of this dust-swept refugee camp: Her newborn son, just delivered by Caesarean. Around a dozen babies are born every day in Za'atari camp, which is home to 120,000 Syrians and counting – and there's only one, overworked Moroccan doctor performing C-sections.
Abstract
The experimental concept of a search for a long‐range coupling between rubidium (Rb) nuclear spins and the mass of the Earth is described. The experiment is based on simultaneous measurement of the spin precession frequencies for overlapping ensembles of 85Rb and 87Rb atoms contained within an evacuated, antirelaxation‐coated vapor cell. Rubidium atoms are spin‐polarized in the presence of an applied magnetic field by synchronous optical pumping with circularly polarized laser light. Spin precession is probed by measuring optical rotation of far‐off‐resonant, linearly polarized laser light. Simultaneous measurement of 85Rb and 87Rb spin precession frequencies enables suppression of magnetic‐field‐related systematic effects. The nuclear structure of the Rb isotopes ma...

Research conducted over the past 25 years has shown a strong correlation between language barriers and poor quality health care. Language can affect the accuracy of patient histories, the ability to engage in treatment decision-making, poorer understanding of a medical diagnosis or treatment, underuse of primary and preventative services, lower use and misuse of prescription medications, and a decreased level of patient trust. In the MidContinental Region there are many languages used: American Sign Language, Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese, Cushite, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Laotian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, ...

Conclusion:
Vaginal douching is a prevalent practice in Egypt and has traditional and religious roots within the community. There are many misbeliefs around this habit in Egypt. Vaginal douching increases certain reproductive health hazards especially preterm labor and PID. Much effort and awareness campaigns are needed to increase women awareness about health hazards of this incorrect practice and to limit its use.
In the post-genome era, several tools that have increased our global understanding of the molecular basis of several cell-based phenomena have been developed. However, proteomics has not been efficiently integrated with the other ‘omics’ (e.g. transcriptomics and metabolomics), because of the relatively low number of proteins identified by mass spectrometry (MS). Peptides from low-abundance proteins are often not detected by MS due to ionization suppression. To improve the number of peptide identifications in MS analyses, we propose three separation methodologies; namely, OFFGEL electrophoresis, 2D-liquid chromatography (LC) and the long monolithic silica-C18 capillary column method, with the common aim to decrease peptide complexity prior to MS analyses. Proteomics using the a...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

by Sier-Ching Chantha, Adam C. Herman, Adrian E. Platts, Xavier Vekemans, Daniel J. Schoen

Self-incompatibility (SI) is the flowering plant reproductive system in which self pollen tube growth is inhibited, thereby preventing self-fertilization. SI has evolved independently in several different flowering plant lineages. In all Brassicaceae species in which the molecular basis of SI has been investigated in detail, the product of the S-locus receptor kinase (SRK) gene functions as receptor in the initial step of the self pollen-rejection pathway, while that of the S-locus cysteine-rich (SCR) gene functions as ligand. Here we examine the hypothesis that the S locus in the Brassicaceae genus Leavenworthia is paralogous with the S locus previously characterized in other members of the family....

Metabolomics analysis tools can provide quantitative information on the concentration of metabolites in an organism. In this paper, we propose the minimum pathway model generator tool for simulating the dynamics of metabolite concentrations (SS-mPMG) and a tool for parameter estimation by genetic algorithm (SS-GA). SS-mPMG can extract a subsystem of the metabolic network from the genome-scale pathway maps to reduce the complexity of the simulation model and automatically construct a dynamic simulator to evaluate the experimentally observed behavior of metabolites. Using this tool, we show that stochastic simulation can reproduce experimentally observed dynamics of amino acid biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this simulation, SS-mPMG extracts the metabolic network subsystem from publ...

Genetic studies in Arabidopsis implicate an α/β-hydrolase, KARRIKIN-INSENSITIVE 2 (KAI2) as a receptor for karrikins, germination-promoting butenolide small molecules found in the smoke of burned plants. However, direct biochemical evidence for the interaction between KAI2 and karrikin and for the mechanism of downstream signaling by a KAI2–karrikin complex remain elusive....
The heavy metal copper (Cu) is an essential microelement required for normal plant growth and development, but it inhibits primary root growth when in excess. The mechanism underlying how excess Cu functions in this process remains to be further elucidated. Here, we report that a higher concentration of CuSO4 inhibited primary root elongation of Arabidopsis seedlings by affecting both the elongation and meristem zones. In the meristem zone, meristematic cell division potential was reduced by excess Cu. Further experiments showed that Cu can modulate auxin distribution, resulting in higher auxin activities in both the elongation and meristem zones of Cu-treated roots based on DR5::GUS expression patterns. This Cu-mediated auxin redistribution was shown to be responsible for Cu-mediated inhi...

Leaf shape is one of the key determinants of plant architecture. Leaf shape also affects the amount of sunlight captured and influences photosynthetic efficiency; thus, it is an important agronomic trait in crop plants. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing leaf shape is a central issue of plant developmental biology and agrobiotechnology. Here, we characterized the narrow-leaf phenotype of FL90, a linkage tester line of rice (Oryza sativa). Light and scanning electron microscopic analyses of FL90 leaves revealed defects in the development of marginal regions and a reduction in the number of longitudinal veins. The narrow-leaf phenotype of FL90 shows a two-factor recessive inheritance and is caused by the loss of function of two WUSCHEL-related homeobox genes, NAL2 and NAL3 (NAL...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

We report the emergence of resistance to triazoles in environmental Aspergillus fumigatus isolates in Iran. The TR34/L98H mutation was the only resistance mechanism. Overall 3.3% of the A. fumigatus isolates from hospital surroundings in Sari and Tehran had the same TR34/L98H STRAf genotype and were related to some resistant clinical and environmental TR34/L98H isolates from the Netherlands and India. It is emphasised that routine resistance surveillance studies focusing on environmental and clinical samples are warranted to yield the true prevalence of azole resistance in A. fumigatus in Iran.
Spotlight on National Library of Medicine Resources – Wed. May 22, 2013, 1:00 MT, 2:00 CT – Multiple Language Resources.

‘WHO warns that a deadly novel coronavirus could be passed from person to person’, The Independent reports.
The news – featured in much of the media – is based on the latest ‘state of play’ advice from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the novel coronavirus (nCV).
nCV, which is genetically similar to the SARS virus, was first reported in the autumn of 2012 and appears to have originated in the Middle East.
Initial symptoms of nCV are similar to a severe case of the flu and include:

 fever
 cough
 shortness of breath
 breathing difficulties

Unlike flu, nCV is thought to have a high risk of causing serious, life-threatening, complications such as pneumonia and kidney failure.

What have the WHO said about nCV?
The WHO has confirmed that as of May 12 2013 there ...

Sensitive people who consume cinnamon-flavored foods, drinks and food supplements may have a higher risk of liver damage, researchers from the University of Mississippi, USA, and King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, report in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. Cinnamon is one of the most important flavoring agents in foods and drinks, team leader Ikhlas Khan explained. It is the second most popular spice, next to black pepper, in the United States and Europe. Ceylon cinnamon, also known as "true cinnamon" (cinnamon verum) is very expensive...
ConclusionIn patients at high risk of premature delivery, correct placement of the Arabin cervical pessary should be immediately controlled, which can be easy and fast done with MRI. Our study provides some evidence that in singleton pregnancies with short cervix, cervical pessary delays birth by a mechanical effect on the utero‐cervical angle.
Scoop and go Debate continues over a ‘scoop and go’ versus a ‘stay and stabilise’ approach to patient care in the prehospital trauma setting. Analysis of data from more than 19 000 patients presenting to a level 1 trauma centre in California revealed increased odds of mortality if the scene time was greater than 20 min in the case of penetrating trauma. Interestingly, this association was not demonstrated amongst patients who had sustained blunt trauma (Ann Emerg Med 2013;61:167–74). Ambulance crashes There is evidence to suggest that the risk of road traffic collisions is up to 13 times higher for emergency ambulances per mile travelled than other vehicles. Researchers from Turkey reviewed forensic records and identified 21 deaths of patients who we...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

One of our greatest innovations is our ability to look at our planet from the heavens. From hundreds of miles above the surface of our planet, we can see how everything fits together. We can see the erosion of soil over millions of years, and life that springs up in the presence of water. We also see the human experiment play out on fields and plains, along rivers and oceans.
The new novel coronavirus (nCoV), which is similar to the SARS, is spreading across the globe. The French Ministry of Health has just reported the first case of the virus in France. The 65 year old Frenchman was diagnosed with nCoV following a visit to the United Arab Emirates. He had an underlying medical condition and became ill on 23 April 2013 and was hospitalized. A laboratory test conducted on 7 May 2013 by experts at the Institut Pasteur confirmed that the man was infected with the nCoV.
Discussion: These data suggest a similar socio-economic status during the Late Roman and Islamic periods. The diet of the population living in the Late Roman and Islamic periods contained a larger number of products containing strontium than calcium. In the modern population these proportions have been reversed. (Source: Archives of Oral Biology)

Heparan sulfates (HS) are key elements of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which store and protect various cell communication peptides (CCP). HS play a central role in tissue homeostasis, by modulating the bioavailability of CCP. As such, they control the cell migration and differentiation required for wound healing processes. Tissue injury will lead to destruction of cells and surrounding ECM is destroyed. CCPs synthesised by inflammatory and circulating cells can then promote tissue repair, but with a loss of tissue quality, leaving traces, scars or fibroses. We have engineered biodegradable nano-polymers mimicking the HS. They bind to the structure proteins of the damaged ECM, and to the CCP produced by healthy neighbouring cells, thereby restoring the ECM microenvironment and tissue hom...

Home care service is providing health care to the patient in his or her dwelling when care in the hospital is no longer required. Home care services provide not only medical services but also the social services that the human needs. Studies concerning home care services bear great importance. In this review, the authors aim to guide new studies by stating the legal and scientific point reached at the moment in Turkey.
Conclusions:
This will cause a very limited medical response initially for survivors in Iran and Israel. Strategic use of surviving medical response and collaboration with international relief could be expedited by the predicted casualty distributions and locations. The consequences for health management of thermal burn and radiation patients is the worst, as burn patients require enormous resources to treat, and there will be little to no familiarity with the treatment of radiation victims. Any rational analysis of a nuclear war between Iran and Israel reveals the utterly unacceptable outcomes for either nation. (Source: Conflict and Health)

Conclusions: AKI incidence in NICU was 14%, and 80% of AKI developed during the first week of life. AKI is associated with low birth weight, prematurity, birth asphyxia, sepsis, hypovolemia, cardiac diseases and urinary tract anomalies. Mortality in patients with AKI is increased independent on the birth weight, gestational age and underlying etiology. (Source: Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation)

Conclusions:Higher predialysis SBP variability is associated with stroke on HD populations suggesting a potential role for cerebral perfusion instability. We confirm known associations between age, diabetes, pre-existent cerebrovascular disease and hypertension. In contrast to studies in non-dialysis patients we do not find an association between EPO dose and stroke. Interventional trials of blood pressure management on stroke are recommended.
We describe the clinical and laboratory features of a family of Arab ancestry and consanguinity. Five affected individuals were diagnosed in two sibships. All affected members have small platelets, severe to moderate thrombocytopenia of neonatal onset, increased bleeding tendency and bleeding complications such as: life‐threatening massive hemoperitoneum due to corpus luteum rupture during ovulation and severe mucosal bleeding. The familial involvement and early onset of the disease support the presence of a congenital genetic disorder with an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. This does not fit the clinical spectrum of any of the currently known thrombocytopenia disorders. Pediatr Blood Cancer 2013;9999:XX–XX. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
