Conclusion: There is growing evidence that energy therapies have a positive effect on symptoms associated with cancer. While there is need for further research, it is clear that an appreciation for the value of research methods beyond the randomized control trial is important.Implications for Nursing Practice: Energy therapies offer additional strategies for oncology nurses providing integrated nursing care to alleviate suffering and symptom distress of patients with cancer.
Conclusion: The interest in and use of special diets and nutrition-related CAM is prevalent in oncology patients. While some nutrition interventions may offer benefit, not all are without risk.Implications for Nursing Practice: Every patient must be assessed for the use of special diets and nutrition-related CAM, any use must be documented, and the person counseled about the pros and cons of these approaches.
EARLY national surveys have confirmed a sustained interest in and use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies in the United States (US). These first surveys provided an important first look but lacked specifics including diagnoses, disease site, and special populations. By the end of the 1990s we knew more about the use of CAM by specific populations with cancer, including cancer site, geographic and ethnic differences, and the elderly. There have been growing pains typical of a new field in health care including clarification of terminology, enhanced understanding of cultural impact, identification of practice issues including certification and scope of practice, sorting an ever expanding body of knowledge, and establishing evidence based practice.
Conclusions  The results show how important it is to have firm overall leadership and trained group leaders with a common purpose, interdependent roles and complementary skills, who are thus well prepared to prevent or deal with challenging group processes.Implications for nursing management  The leaders of both levels, which are highly interrelated, should have a current theoretical understanding of pain theory, group leadership skills and a cognitive behavioural approach.
Conclusions.  By providing a formalised mechanism for detecting depression, documented screening and referral rates improved for those with comorbid depression and heart disease affording an opportunity for early intervention. These findings support a move towards integrated approaches to screening of depression to become standard practice in the acute cardiac setting.Relevance to clinical practice.  Such mechanisms also have the potential to initiate the development of new models of care that acknowledge the complexity of comorbid depression and heart disease and provide pathways from speciality to primary care which integrate the physical and psychosocial domains inclusive of screening, referral, systematic monitoring and streamlined behavioural and physical care.
In conclusion, OAB negatively affects quality of life in Turkish women. However, many women's quality of life can be improved if the patients seek medical treatment. Thus, nurses should encourage the patients to seek medical support in order to cope with health‐related quality‐of‐life problems.
Conclusions: The overwhelming majority of participants were (a) willing to undergo screening; (b) take suppressive antiviral medication if necessary; (c) share their results with sexual partners; and (d) consider safer sexual practices as a consequence of screening. Older patients were less willing to consider daily antiviral medication. Men who have sex with men (MSM) had lower perceived susceptibility to HSV‐2 but were more likely to undergo and report screening.Implications for practice: Future research should include predictive models for determining the most appropriate patients to screen for HSV‐2 and best practices for those who test positive. Shared decision making between patients and advanced practice nurses regarding the risks and benefits of screening for HSV‐2 should be ...

Abstract:
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is an effective treatment option for reducing pain, but PCA errors can be quite serious. Opioid analgesics are among the most effective pain relievers available, but all have contraindications and can have adverse effects, including respiratory depression and other effects on the central nervous system. Practitioners must weigh the potential benefits of PCA use against the risks. Errors associated with the PCA process have been documented in each phase of the medication-use process; therefore, practice improvements in prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring PCA may reduce the likelihood of errors. Perioperative nurses can make important contributions to safe PCA use by establishing standardized processes to help ens...

The objective of this study was to analyze the knowledge on nursing interventions for hospitalized stroke patients. An integrative literature review was performed by accessing five online databases, in September 2009. The descriptors used in the search were nursing care and stoke, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. A total 223 articles were found, and 12 were selected.
Conclusion.  Because people with worsening Alzheimer’s disease have fewer pain behaviours, assessing pain using behavioural indicators can be a challenge. Improving methods to assess for pain in people with Alzheimer’s disease is of critical public health importance. Moreover, future studies are urgently needed to further examine the sensory, emotional, and behavioural responses to pain in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
This study aimed at exploring and describing the self‐care management strategies used by patients with coronary artery disease to facilitate sleep. Qualitative interviews in a dialogue manner, in a phenomenographic reference frame analyzed according to manifest and latent principles of qualitative content analysis, were performed. A purposeful sampling technique was used including 11 patients with coronary heart disease in a Heart Medical Unit in a general hospital setting. Two main themes were identified: ‘sleep‐rhythm’ and ‘sleep‐hygiene’ including four descriptive categories. The categories reveal five basic responses including emotions, cognition, physical symptoms (reactions), behaviours and/or the sleep environment, which were related to perceived or actual presence of ...
