A consortium of scientists from across the country has found that breathing ultrafine particles from a large family of materials that increasingly are found in a host of household and commercial products, from sunscreens to the ink in copy machines to super-strong but lightweight sporting equipment, can cause lung inflammation and damage. The research on two of the most common types of engineered nanomaterials is published online in Environmental Health Perspectives, the journal of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)...
To infect its host, the respiratory pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa takes an ordinary protein usually involved in making other proteins and adds three small molecules to turn it into a key for gaining access to human cells. In a study published in mBio®, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, scientists at Emory University School of Medicine, the University of Virginia, and Universidad de las Islas Baleares in Mallorca, Spain, uncover this previously unknown virulence factor in P. aeruginosa, one of the most common causes of hospital-acquired pneumonia...
Tuesday, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union announced it is asking the UC patient care and service employees it represents at UCLA Health System hospitals and clinics to strike.

The first priority at UCLA Health System's hospitals is to provide patients with safe, high-quality care. In anticipation of a possible strike, UCLA Health System staff has been meeting daily to make contingency plans so that it can continue to serve the public's health needs.

For the first time, researchers from institutions around the country have conducted an identical series of toxicology tests evaluating lung-related health impacts associated with widely used engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). The study provides comparable health risk data from multiple labs, which should help regulators develop policies to protect workers and consumers who come into contact with ENMs. Researchers have done a great deal of toxicological research on ENMs over the past 10 years, but the results have often been difficult to interpret...
1. Ambrisentan Not Appropriate for Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Ambrisentan should not be used to treat patients for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). IPF is a fatal form of chronic, progressive lung disease characterized by irreversible scarring around both lungs. IPF causes about 5,000 deaths each year and currently there is no approved treatment. Researchers do not know what causes IPF, but a protein called endothelin-1 that causes the blood vessels to contract and induces lung scarring and proliferation has been associated with the disease...
Pregnant women are advised not to smoke during pregnancy because it can harm the baby's lungs and lead to wheezing and asthma, among other problems. If a woman absolutely can't kick the habit, taking vitamin C during pregnancy may improve her newborn's lung function and prevent wheezing in the first year of life, according to a study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Washington, DC. "Vitamin C is a simple, safe and inexpensive treatment that may decrease the impact of smoking during pregnancy on childhood respiratory health," said lead author Cynthia T...
The tick-borne Lone Star virus has been conclusively identified as part of a family of other tick-borne viruses called bunyaviruses, which often cause fever, respiratory problems and bleeding, according to new research led by scientists at UC San Francisco (UCSF). What made the work especially promising, said principal investigator Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, was the speed at which the virus was definitively identified...
(American Society for Microbiology) To infect its host, the respiratory pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa takes an ordinary protein usually involved in making other proteins and adds three small molecules to turn it into a key for gaining access to human cells. In a study to be published May 7 in mBio researchers uncover this previously unknown virulence factor in P. aeruginosa, one of the most common causes of hospital-acquired pneumonia.
Many of today's school teachers opt for dustless chalk to keep hands and classrooms clean. But according to a study published in the May issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), this choice in chalk may cause allergy and asthma symptoms in students that have a milk allergy. Casein, a milk protein, is often used in low-powder chalk. When milk allergic children inhale chalk particles containing casein, life-threatening asthma attacks and other respiratory issues can occur...
Permissive hypercapnia is a well-accepted ventilator strategy for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome as well as other causes of respiratory failure, such as the respiratory distress syndrome seen in premature infants. Multiple studies have demonstrated that both myocardial contractility and systemic vascular resistance (SVR) decrease with hypercapnic acidosis, the ultimate effect being that cardiac function is maintained or even augmented. The effects of hypercapnic acidosis on cardiac function in the preterm infant have not been elucidated. In a prospective observational study, published in the May issue of The Journal of Pediatrics, the authors analyzed paired blood gasses and echocardiograms from 29 hemodynamically stable preterm infants at 30 weeks gestation.
The number of U.S. children who have skin and food allergies has risen significantly in the last few years, a new government report by the CDC reveals. Surprisingly, the incidence of respiratory and food allergies increased with income: kids living in families that earned more than 200% of the poverty level had the highest rates, statistics suggested.
A University of Eastern Finland study showed that low serum vitamin D levels are a risk factor for pneumonia. The risk of contracting pneumonia was more than 2.5 times greater in subjects with the lowest vitamin D levels than in subjects with high vitamin D levels. The results were published in Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. The follow-up study carried out by the UEF Institute of Public Health investigated the link between serum vitamin D3 and the risk of contracting pneumonia. The study involved 1,421 subjects living in the Kuopio region in Eastern Finland...
Multiple techniques have been developed to provide noninvasive strategies for respiratory support of the newborn that provide positive airway pressure continuously, with or without ventilation cycles, in nonintubated infants. The core physiologic variable is positive airway pressure used clinically as nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP can be augmented with intermittent positive pressure breaths that are, or are not, synchronized to the breathing of the infant. Pressures delivered by high-flow nasal cannula are less predictable than those delivered by a CPAP device. A renewed interest in testing and innovating to improve noninvasive respiratory support techniques has resulted from efforts to avoid intubation, mechanical ventilation, and ultimately bronchopulmonary dyspl...<div id="medworm"><p><b><i>MedWorm Sponsor Message:</i></b> Find the best Christmas presents and <a href="http://www.thejanuarysales.com/">January Sales</a> in the UK with this simple shopping directory.</p></div>

Mechanical ventilation is essential for survival of many extremely premature infants, but all forms of positive pressure ventilation are to some degree injurious to the lungs. A variety of sophisticated devices are used to provide respiratory support, yet substantial uncertainty remains regarding the optimal ways in which these tools can be used to minimize ventilator-associated lung injury. A good understanding of the unique aspects of respiratory physiology of extremely preterm infants is key to obtaining the greatest benefit from modern ventilator technology. Early lung volume recruitment with adequate end-expiratory pressure, avoidance of volutrauma during the immediate postnatal period, and noninvasive respiratory support as the initial strategy are now accepted as important factors i...

An atomic-level snapshot of a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) protein bound to a human antibody represents a leap toward developing a vaccine for a common - and sometimes very serious - childhood disease. The findings, by scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, define the vulnerable shape of a critical RSV component called the fusion glycoprotein. The NIAID scientists determined the fusion glycoprotein's shape as it appears before its interaction with human cells... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

What Are the Basic Oxygen Delivery Methods?

Discussion
Oxygen is the most common element on earth. It makes up 21% of air, 89% of seawater and 46% of the earth&#8217;s crust. It is a highly reactive element (including being highly flammable) that must be combined to be stable (O2 molecular form) and non-reactive at ambient temperature and pressure.
A continuous supply of oxygen is necessary for human life and lack of oxygen leads to hypoxic brain damage and other end organ damage such as the liver, kidneys and heart. Thus in hypoxic situations, emergency oxygen use is necessary.
Situations where O2 is necessary in high concentrations includes major trauma, shock, sepsis, cardiac arrest, and poisoning with cyanide or carbon monoxide. Other situations where oxygen is likely needed to keep within the saturation range of 94-98% includ...

Smokers having elective surgery face a slew of potential health problems including wound infection, respiratory failure, prolonged hospital stay and multiple complications after surgery. John Maa, M.D., said surgeons should use the five A's: Ask patients if they smoke; advise them to quit; assess previous attempts to quit; assist them with nicotine replacement; and arrange a follow-up meeting.
New research from the University of Southampton has found that working or travelling on an underground railway for a sustained period of time could have health implications. Previously published work suggests that working in environments such as steel mills or welding plants, which are rich in airborne metals, like iron, copper and nickel, can have damaging effects on health. However, little research has been done on the effects of working in an underground railway environment - a similarly metal-rich environment - and results of studies that have been conducted are often inconclusive... Sudanese refugees in Chad.

TISSI, CHAD/NEW YORK, APRIL 26, 2013&mdash;Violent clashes in Sudan&#39;s Darfur region have driven approximately 50,000 people across the border into southeastern Chad since early March, where a lack of food, water, shelter, and basic services is developing into a humanitarian crisis, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/M&eacute;decins Sans Fronti&egrave;res (MSF) said today.

In addition to Sudanese refugees, the displaced population includes citizens from Chad and the Central African Republic who previously took refuge in Darfur. Humanitarian assistance is urgently needed before the looming rainy season cuts off road access to many areas, MSF said.
