BIRMINGHAM, Ala., June 16, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Back On Track Chiropractic provides rehabilitation services for common summer sports injuries. According to Birmingham chiropractor Dr. Scott Duca, patients are at increased risk for a sports injury during the summer season. Training for competitive races, including marathons and triathlons, as well as playing recreational sports like company softball increase the risk for injuries. Common sports injuries include back pain due to a bulging disc or strained muscle, as well as repetitive motion injuries. The Birmingham practice provides rehabilitative care to manage pain, reduce swelling and support healing. (Source: Medical News (via PRIMEZONE))

The content of this useful textbook covers the fundamental clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic skills required to recognise, assess and manage acutely ill adult patients in a variety of settings, including intensive care, high dependency, surgical recovery, coronary care, emergency departments and wards. The concise chapters provide an excellent introduction to the recognition and ongoing management of the acutely ill adult, but as highlighted by the author, it does not aim to provide a complete guide to clinical practice. The author recommends that additional reference to more detailed textbooks will promote deeper learning. (Source: Intensive and Critical Care Nursing)

Conclusion: In a large tertiary-care teaching hospital, most patients admitted to the ICU had multiple indications for pneumococcal vaccination. However, only a small percentage were assessed or given vaccination during their hospital stay. ICU protocols that give nurses the ability to assess and administer pneumococcal vaccines may improve immunisation rates. (Source: Intensive and Critical Care Nursing)

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine if simulation aided by media technology contributes towards an increase in knowledge, empathy, and a change in attitudes in regards to auditory hallucinations for nursing students. A convenience sample of 60 second‐year undergraduate nursing students from an Australian university was invited to be part of the study. A pre–post‐test design was used, with data analysed using a paired samples t‐test to identify pre‐ and post‐changes on nursing students' scores on knowledge of auditory hallucinations. Nine of the 11 questions reported statistically‐significant results. The remaining two questions highlighted knowledge embedded within the curriculum, with therapeutic communication being the core work of mental health nursing. The imp...

For patients undergoing surgery on the cervical (upper) spine, overall rates of complications and death are higher at teaching hospitals than at non-teaching hospitals, reports a study in the journal Spine. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health. But the differences are small and are likely explained by the more-complex surgeries performed and higher-risk patients treated at teaching hospitals, according to the report by Dr Kern Singh of Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, colleagues...
Exercise interventions in individuals with Parkinson's disease incorporate goal-based motor skill training to engage cognitive circuitry important in motor learning. With this exercise approach, physical therapy helps with learning through instruction and feedback (reinforcement) and encouragement to perform beyond self-perceived capability. Individuals with Parkinson's disease become more cognitively engaged with the practice and learning of movements and skills that were previously automatic and unconscious.
We examined the maturation of cellular activity patterns that underlie these changes. Single unit ensemble recording combined with antidromic identification (Day et al., 2011) was used to study network development in anesthetized zebra finches. Autocovariance quantified oscillations within single units. A subset of neurons oscillated in the theta/alpha/mu/beta range (8‐20 Hz), with greater power in adults compared to juveniles. Across the network, the normalized oscillatory power in the 8‐20 Hz range was greater in adults than juveniles. In addition, the correlated activity between rhythmic neuron pairs increased with development. We next examined the functional impact of the oscillators on the output neurons of HVC. We found that the firing of oscillatory neurons negatively correlated...

On 14 June 2012, the Asia–Pacific Alliance for the Control of Influenza (APACI) convened the first Antiviral Forum jointly with the Influenza Foundation of Thailand and the Thailand Department of Disease Control. The goals of the meeting were to improve pandemic planning in the region from lessons learned during the 2009 pandemic, particularly with regard to the safety and efficacy of antiviral use; gain a better understanding of the therapeutic use of antivirals in seasonal influenza; review and analyse the official influenza control policies of Asia–Pacific countries and evidence gaps to support policy development; and to establish collaborative relationships to promote best practices in the use of antivirals for the treatment of influenza.
Authors: Manguiat LS, Fang TJ
    Abstract
The microbiological quality of chicken- and pork-based street-food samples from Taichung, Taiwan's night markets (50) and Laguna, Philippines' public places (69) was evaluated in comparison to a microbiological guideline for ready-to-eat foods. Different bacterial contamination patterns were observed between 'hot-grilled' and 'cold cooked/fried' food types from the two sampling locations with 'hot grilled' foods generally showing better microbiological quality. Several samples were found to be unsatisfactory due to high levels of aerobic plate count, coliform, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The highest counts obtained were 8.2 log cfu g(-1), 5.4 log cfu g(-1), 4.4 log cfu g(-1), and 3.9 log cfu g(-1), respectively, suggest...

This study explored the longitudinal, reciprocal relationships between neighborhood crime and school-level academic achievement within 500 urban schools. Results revealed that higher neighborhood crime (and particularly violent crime) predicted decreases in school academic achievement across time. School climate emerged as one possible mechanism within this relationship, with higher neighborhood crime predicting decreases in socioemotional learning and safety, but not academic rigor. All three dimensions of school climate were predictive of changes in academic achievement. Although this research supports a primarily unidirectional hypothesis of neighborhoods' impacts on embedded settings, additional work is needed to understand these relationships using additional conceptualizations of nei...

“The dignified senior dermatologist in Lima said softly to me, ‘No one has ever offered to come here and help us before.’” –Karen McKoy, MD (Peru) In most developing countries there are few, if any, skin specialists and primary care providers often receive little or no training in skin care. Skin problems are often overlooked when global health issues are discussed, yet those affected range from 28% to 87% of the population, depending on the locale. An estimated 24% of primary care visits in developing countries are related to skin concerns. When health care is focused on life-threatening diseases, skin concerns may not be addressed, which can lead to infection, discomfort, and even disfigurement and community ostracism. With so many lacking access to care, and with a shortage o...

Since 2006, after completing a cognitive certifying or recertifying examination, dermatologists are automatically enrolled into Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and can access a personalized electronic table (at www.abderm.org) that presents the requirements over the 10-year cycle. On this web site, diplomates can also pay the annual fee and attest to completion of the various components. Clicking on hyperlinks in the table launches explanations of the requirements. A hyperlink below the table takes the reader to the various resources approved for completion of the MOC requirements. There is a login tab in the upper left corner with a login help feature below. Abstract
One hundred years after the Flexner Report recommended major changes to medical education, an international panel has released a vision of medical education for the 21st century. Two major features of this detailed report that were not adequately articulated or developed were (1) the values that underpin care of individual patients and how these could be sustained and promoted, and (2) the values required to promote global health at a time when health disparities are widening. After reviewing the timeless scientific and humanistic foundations of clinical medicine that are essential for the care of individuals, we consider the role of virtue both in relation to individual patient care and in promoting an ethical framework for population health w...

    Abstract
Evolutionary medicine is an emerging field of medical studies that uses evolutionary theory to explain the ultimate causes of health and disease. Educational tools, online courses, and medical school modules are being developed to help clinicians and students reconceptualize health and illness in light of our evolutionary past. Yet clinical guidelines based on our ancient life histories are epistemically weak, relying on the controversial assumptions of adaptationism and advocating a strictly biophysical account of health. To fulfill the interventionist goals of clinical practice, it seems that proximate explanations are all we need to develop successful diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. Considering these epistemic concerns, this article argues th...

This study evaluated frustration reactions of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) during a communicative situation involving interactions with a human. The task included the reinforcement and extinction of the gaze response toward the experimenter's face when the dogs tried to obtain inaccessible food. The dog's frustration reactions during extinction involved an increase in withdrawal and side orientation to the location of the human as well as lying down, ambulation, sniffing, and vocalizations compared with the last acquisition trial. These results are especially relevant for domestic dog training situations in which the extinction technique is commonly used to discourage undesirable behaviors.

ConclusionsThis series of media reports likely represent only a fraction of the overall morbidity and mortality related to dental anesthesia. These data may indicate an association between mortality and pediatric dental procedures under sedation, particularly in office settings. However, these relationships are difficult to test in the absence of a database that could provide an estimate of incidence and prevalence of morbidity and mortality. With growing numbers of children receiving anesthesia for dental procedures from providers with variable training, it is imperative to be able to track anesthesia‐related adverse outcomes. Creating a national database of adverse outcomes will enable future research to advance patient safety and quality.
Conclusions:
The wide inequities between urban and rural areas, across economic and educational strata in the use of antenatal care highlight the need to put more resources to poor households, rural areas, and disadvantage regions. We suggest further study to understand additional factors for the deep unmet need in rural areas and some regions of Ethiopia. (Source: BioMed Central)

Dexterous hand movements can be restored with motor rehabilitative training after a lesion of the lateral corticospinal tract (l-CST) in macaque monkeys. To maximize effectiveness, the optimal time to commence such rehabilitative training must be determined. We conducted behavioral analyses and compared the recovery of dexterous hand movements between monkeys in which hand motor training was initiated immediately after the l-CST lesion (early-trained monkeys) and those in which training was initiated 1 mo after the lesion (late-trained monkeys). The performance of dexterous hand movements was evaluated by food retrieval tasks. In early-trained monkeys, performance evaluated by the success rate in a vertical slit task (retrieval of a small piece of food through a narrow vertical slit) recov...

For successful object manipulation, the central nervous system must appropriately coordinate digit placement and force distribution. It is known that digit force planning is significantly influenced by previous manipulations even when object properties cannot be predicted on a trial-to-trial basis. We sought to determine whether this effect extends beyond force control to the coordination of digit placement and force. Subjects grasped and lifted an object whose center of mass (CM) was changed unpredictably across trials. Grasp planning was quantified by measuring the torque generated on the object at lift onset. We found that both digit placement and force were systematically affected by the CM experienced on the previous trial. Additionally, the negative covariation between digit forces a...

Bilateral movement rehabilitation is gaining popularity as an approach to improve the recovery not only of bimanual function but also of unilateral motor tasks. While the neural mechanisms mediating the transfer of bilateral training gains into unimanual contexts are not fully understood, converging evidence from behavioral, neurophysiological, and imaging studies suggests that bimanual movements are not simply the superposition of unimanual tasks undertaken with both (upper) limbs. Here we investigated the neural responses in both hemispheres to bilateral ballistic motor training and the extent to which performance improvements transferred to a unimanual task. Since aging influences interhemispheric interactions during movement production, both young (n = 9; mean age 19.4 yr; 6 women, 3 m...

In a previous modeling study, Leblois et al. (2006) demonstrated an action selection mechanism in cortico-basal ganglia loops based on competition between the positive feedback, direct pathway through the striatum and the negative feedback, hyperdirect pathway through the subthalamic nucleus. The present study investigates how multiple level action selection could be performed by the basal ganglia. To do this, the model is extended in a manner consistent with known anatomy and electrophysiology in three main areas. First, two-level decision making has been incorporated, with a cognitive level selecting based on cue shape and a motor level selecting based on cue position. We show that the decision made at the cognitive level can be used to bias the decision at the motor level. We then demon...

Conclusions
The potential for muscle rehabilitation in response to RT is preserved in COPD. Except for markers of myogenesis, molecular responses to RT are not tightly coupled to lean mass gains but reflect the lower work done during RT, suggesting some caution when identifying molecular targets for intervention. Increasing post-exercise protein and carbohydrate intake is not a prerequisite for a normal training response in COPD. (Source: Thorax)

During the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, obesity was convincingly identified as a novel, independent risk factor for multiple markers of disease severity. Associations between numerous nosocomial and community-acquired clinical infections have previously been established; yet, little is known about the mechanisms underpinning the increased susceptibility to severe outcomes following pandemic H1N1/09 infection in obesity. Here, we present a brief synthesis of the recent advances in our understanding of the immunomodulatory effects of obesity on outcomes following respiratory viral infection, with a particular focus on pandemic influenza.
Authors: Feeney WE, Langmore NE
    Abstract
Arms races between brood parasites and their hosts provide model systems for studying the evolutionary repercussions of species interactions. However, how naive hosts identify brood parasites as enemies remains poorly understood, despite its ecological and evolutionary significance. Here, we investigate whether young, cuckoo-naive superb fairy-wrens, Malurus cyaneus, can learn to recognize cuckoos as a threat through social transmission of information. Naive individuals were initially unresponsive to a cuckoo specimen, but after observing conspecifics mob a cuckoo, they made more whining and mobbing alarm calls, and spent more time physically mobbing the cuckoo. This is the first direct evidence that naive hosts can learn to identify brood p...

    Abstract
As is the case for human speech, birdsong is transmitted across generations by imitative learning. Although transfer of song patterns from adults to juveniles typically occurs via vertical or oblique transmission, there is also evidence of horizontal transmission between juveniles of the same generation. Here, we show that a young male zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) that has been exposed to its father during the sensitive period for song learning can lead a brother, that has never heard the paternal song, to imitate some sounds of the father. Moreover, song similarity between the two brothers was higher than the similarity measured between the paternal song and the song of the brother that had a week-long exposure to the father. We spec...

Texas physicians have taken aim at a new health threat — power plants.

Texas Medical Association officials say member physicians will ask state leaders to take action to make harmful power plants less dangerous.

TMA’s House of Delegates governing body recently passed a resolution calling for the organization, which represents more than 47,000 physician and medical student members, to support laws or state agency rules requiring “old, polluting power plants” to be retrofitted with pollution… (Source: bizjournals.com Health Care:Physician Practices headlines)

CONCLUSION: Participation in a structured JC can lead to significant improvements in EBP knowledge irrespective of the characteristics of individual practitioners. The change in attitude and evidence uptake, however, may be influenced by individual characteristics which will therefore require careful consideration when designing EBP interventions. An EBP intervention is likely to be successful if a systematic assessment of the barriers at different levels (ie, individual, organizational, and contextual) informs the choice of evidence implementation strategy.

Human factors perspective on the prescribing behavior of recent medical graduates: implications for educators.

CONCLUSION: We have modeled the human factors of prescribing behavior by recent medical graduates. As these factors are related to a number of recognized elements of nontechnical skills training within health care, educators should consider design elements from such existing interventions to support prescribing improvement programs. Future research should seek to assess the effectiveness of prescribing focused nontechnical skills training.

This report really drives home the point that parents, health care providers and policymakers need to have more conversations about how mental health disorders are identified, and it needs to happen earlier to make sure proper health care is provided to children,” says Roslyn Murov, MD, director of Outpatient Psychiatry Services at Boston Children’s Hospital. “Childhood can be stressful, especially in modern times. Not every child is going to respond to those stressors in a healthy way and we need to be ready to support those in need, possibly in large numbers.”
The report also states that America now spends more than $240 billion a year on cumulative costs associated with mental health disorders—from medical care to special educational services—but in some cases, t...

Associations Between Vascular Risk and Mood in Euthymic Older Adults: Preliminary Findings.

CONCLUSIONS: Vascular risk was associated with endorsement of depressive symptoms in euthymic older adults. However, the patterns of associations with the two depression scales are distinct and may reflect both differences in administration and item characteristics. A limitation of this study was the exclusion of individuals with subclinical depression, leading to a restricted range on depression scales; future studies should include a full population sample to more fully explore low mood in late-life.

Rural-urban disparities in child nutrition in Bangladesh and Nepal

Conclusions:
Public health interventions aimed at overcoming rural-urban disparities in child nutrition outcomes need to focus principally on bridging gaps in socio-economic endowments of rural and urban households and improving the quality of rural infrastructure. Improving child nutrition outcomes in developing countries does not call for fundamentally different approaches to public health interventions in rural and urban areas.
Influence of socioeconomic and demographic status on spirometry testing in patients initiating medication targeting obstructive lung disease: a population-based cohort study

Conclusion:
Social inequity in spirometry testing among patients initiating medication targeting obstructive lung disease was confirmed in this study. Increased focus on spirometry testing among elderly men living alone, among the unemployed and among women with higher education is required when initiating medication.
Barriers to Breast and Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Care: Perceptions of Primary Care Physicians and Medical Oncologists in the United States [Health Services and Outcomes]

Conclusion
MOs and PCPs perceive different cancer follow-up care barriers/concerns to be problematic. Resolving inadequate training, malpractice-driven test ordering, and preventive-care responsibility concerns may require continuing education, explicit guidelines, and survivorship care plans. Reviewing care plans with survivors may also reduce patients' requests for unnecessary testing.
ConclusionsThere is level Ib evidence that preservation of the greater auricular nerve minimizes the postoperative sensory disturbance and should be considered whenever tumor clearance is not compromised. There is no evidence that overall quality of life is affected when the greater auricular nerve is sacrificed. Head Neck, 2013 (Source: Head and Neck)

This study aims to evaluate a tailored IHCA for people with chronic low back pain combining health information with decision support and behaviour change support.
Methods:
The tailored IHCA will be tested regarding effectiveness and usage against a standard website with identical content in a single-blinded randomized trial with a parallel design. The IHCA contains information on chronic low back pain and its treatment options including health behaviour change recommendations. In the intervention group the content is delivered in dialogue form, tailored to relevant patient characteristics (health literacy, coping style). In the control group there is no tailoring, a standard web-page is used for presenting the content. Participants are unaware of group assignment. Eligibility criteria are ...

MedWorm Sponsor Message: Find the best Christmas presents and January Sales in the UK with this simple shopping directory.

Chronic stress leads to secretion of the adrenal steroid hormone corticosterone, inducing hippocampal atrophy and dendritic hypertrophy in the rat amygdala. Both alterations have been correlated with memory impairment and increased anxiety. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids improves memory and learning in rats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of omega-3 supplementation on learning and major biological and behavioral stress markers. Male Sprague--Dawley rats were randomly assigned to three experimental groups: 1) Control, 2) Vehicle, animals supplemented with water, and 3) omega-3, rats supplemented with omega-3 (100 mg of DHA+25 mg of EPA). Each experimental group was divided into two subgroups: one of which was not subjected to stress while the other was subjected...

Little is known about self‐management among people with Type 2 diabetes living in mainland China. Understanding the experiences of this target population is needed to provide socioculturally relevant education to effectively promote self‐management. The aim of this study was to explore perceived barriers and facilitators to diabetes self‐management for both older community dwellers and health professionals in China. Four focus groups, two for older people with diabetes and two for health professionals, were conducted. All participants were purposively sampled from two communities in Shanghai, China. Six barriers were identified: overdependence on but dislike of western medicine, family role expectations, cuisine culture, lack of trustworthy information sources, deficits in communicat...

The profession of nursing continues to struggle with defining and clarifying its professional identity. The definitive recognition of nursing as a profession was the moving of training from the hospital apprentice model to the tertiary sector. However, this is only part of the story of professional identity in nursing. Once training finishes and enculturation into the workplace commences, professional identity becomes a complicated social activity. This paper proposes social identity theory as a valuable research framework to assist with clarifying and describing the professional identity of nurses. The paper outlines the key elements of a profession and then goes on to describe the main concepts of social identity theory. Lastly, a connection is made between the usefulness of using social...

The purpose of the study was to identify factors influencing quality of chest compression depth in nursing students. A convenience sample of 102 female nursing students enrolled in a cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills training session. Each student performed 3 min of chest compression skills on a Resusci Anne SkillReporter manikin for measurements of both depth and rate. Nursing students with correct compression depth (50–60 mm) had higher body weight (t = −2.02, P = 0.046) and body mass index (t = −2.19, P = 0.031) compared with students in the incorrect depth group. Mean chest compression depth was shallower in underweight nursing students compared with normal weight or overweight students (F = 8.89, P < 0.001). Body weight was a significant factor ...
