I just got back from an amazing social media conference in Chicago called SOBCON. Put on by Terry Starbucker and Liz Strauss, this meetup of 150 people came to one amazing conclusion.
We need to be true to ourselves…
We need to put aside fear and speak from the heart…
We need to find our one true voice…
Boy this sounds good, yet I’ve struggled everyday since I returned to Southern California, to determine just what my true voice is. To be honest, I have a lot of voices rattling around in my head. I love to write about personal development. I enjoy social media and have been trying to learn the ropes of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
I love to escape reality, create amazing characters, and put them in exotic locations. I like to give them problems and conflicts and tie the whole t...

I had a chance to meet one of the best bloggers on the planet this last weekend at the SOBCON conference. He has been around for years, his smiling face beaming out joy to thousands of people. He has built a personal brand around a friendly handshake, a signature smile, and a kind remark.
The person I’m talking about is Phil Gerbyshak, relationship geek.
Phil represents the true meaning of blogging.
I’ve known Phil since the early days of this blog, meeting him through a connection with Rosa Say and her Ho’ohana community. Phil has always been an encouragement with his signature statement… Make It Great!
When Phil walked into the room on the first day of the conference, almost everyone knew him. There were hugs and high fives all over the place.
Phil connected with his audience…

5 Business Lessons I Learned from Karaoke with Chris Brogan, David Armano and Jeremy Wright

I just got back from a fantastic weekend at Business School for Bloggers and other social media types in Chicago, Illinois. While the keynotes were dynamite, the panel discussions lively, and the mastermind groups extremely helpful, I’m not writing about any of those today. I’m writing instead of what happened Saturday night at the Blue Frog in downtown Chicago.

I’m writing about Karaoke!
For those unfamiliar with karaoke, it’s where someone gets up to sing the words to a song by a famous artist. It’s popular in lots of places, and I learned Saturday it is WAY popular in social media circles. Now I know why.
What follows are the lessons I learned Saturday, and the way I’ll be applying them to my business. If you use them, they’ll help you too!
Get your friends involve...

I just got back from the SOBCON blogging conference in Chicago over the weekend. It was a great event with a huge array of speakers and panel members. I met quite a few incredible, life changing, people. As the conference wound down I found there was one over arching theme this year. One big take-away. Something we all need to do…
We need to tell our story…
We need to remove the filters of fear…
We need to be true to ourselves and our readers…
We need to share from the heart…
As I met some of the true thought leaders, it became apparent that the successful people in this business have built a brand around powerful ideas and are willing to share them with passion.
I met Anthony Lannarino of The Sales Blog, who is one of the most confident people I have ever met. I had breakfast wi...

I have the privledge this year of attending SOBCON in Chicago. SOBCON is a blogging and social media conference put on by Liz Strauss and Terry Starbucker, and is in its fourth year. The list of speakers is incredible and the first day was very helpful to anyone trying to get a handle on the new world of online media.
Some of the idea stream highlights from day 1…
Narrower the target, the bigger the opportunity
Determine your brand attributes
Be clear about what you do and who you do it with.
Small shifts… big difference
Set up a presence management system
Forget perfection… pursue progress
Find your mighty cause…
Knock someone’s socks off…

Big C Communities Matter: #SOBCon2010

I was talking with my good buddy Terry Starbucker this week about the upcoming SOBCon conference, and reminiscing back to the first event, with this year’s event being the 4th annual event. The photo in this article is from that very first conference.
What I love about SOBCon is the Big C Community attendees immediately become part of, and that they continue to be part of, once they attend one event.
It’s an amazing thing to me, this Big C Community. There aren’t a lot of places like this in my life. I’ve been part of a lot of organizations, and few have fulfilled my need to be part of this.
What’s a Big C Community?
A Big C Community is one in which a shared sense of purpose pumps through everyone in the organization, whether it’s a formal organization ...

Brain Based Business Thanks Its Community!

Brain Based Business won two amazing recognitions today … and I am both surprised and humbled by that honor. It’s especially cool … if so many intelligent leaders … continue to drop by … discuss … and try out the brain’s extravagant dividends at work. Now that is brain based business at its best … and it takes a bunch of brains to get the goods! It also takes the distinct blessing of working together here at the MITA Brain Based Center with Dr. Robyn McMaster on a daily basis! Thanks Robyn for the amazing problem solving talents you share … and the sheer fun and adventure you bring to our brain research and work! Thanks also Wally Bock for your thoughtful selection of business men and women’s brains hitting the dust a...
