Please be informed that the MMR Forums are temporarily down. There was an issue with the hosting services and this has been apparently been fixed but “It looks like name servers are not yet responding for this domain however. This should resolve once the dns updates have time to propagate. ”
The forums should be up again within 24 hours.
Thank you for your patience.

There was a problem with the submission form but this has now been fixed.

I have set up a website to facilitate doctors looking for locum as well as health institutions wanting to advertise for locums.
The website has basically two main sections. Those who register as locum seekers will be able to search through the database for suitable locum positions. The added advantage is that they will be able to search for specific locations, as well as desired rates. They can also upload their resumes.
Those who register as institutions can post advertisements for locum positions. In addition to that, they can search through the uploaded resumes to find suitable candidates for any vacancies. The institutions can also verify the doctors’ MMC registration number if they are posted on the resumes.
This way, both sides can be pro-active in filling...

Malaysia will be playing host for the first time to a regional conference on Alzheimer’s disease.
The organising committee of the 13th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International came up with the theme ‘The Twin Towers of Dementia Care: Caring and Comforting’.
The conference’s scientific chairman Prof Dr Philip Poi Jun Hua said: “The committee thought that the theme was appropriate because there is still no definitive cure for Alzheimer’s disease at this moment in time.
“So, we must look into how best to maintain the quality of life of the family members looking after patients suffering from the disease, as well as the quality of life of the patients themselves.”

MSNBC Health reports:

Individually designed music therapy may help reduce noise levels in people suffering from tinnitus, or ear ringing, German scientists said on Monday.
The researchers designed musical treatments adapted to the musical tastes of patients with ear-ringing and then stripped out sound frequencies that matched the individual’s tinnitus frequency.
After a year of listening to these “notched” musical therapies, patients reported a distinct decrease in the loudness of ringing compared with those who had listened to non-tailored placebo music, the researchers wrote in a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.
Someone who might benefit from this notched music therapy is Metellica drummer Lars Ulrich. Playing loud rock mu...

The verdict is in — Santa Claus is an unhealthy, reckless role model for children all over the world. According to an article in the BMJ:

Santa made a reckless role model, noting his frequent cookie snacks, occasional cigars and refusal to don a helmet during “extreme sports such as roof surfing and chimney jumping. Santa is a late adopter of evidence-based behavior change and continues to sport a rotund, sedentary image. He promotes a message that obesity is synonymous with cheerfulness and joviality.
More disturbingly, Santa’s close-up contact with sniffling, coughing kids made him a one-man outbreak waiting to happen, with swine flu the biggest seasonal concern.

Humming to upbeat songs like “Nellie the Elephant” while compressing the chest of a heart attack victim could improve a life-saving heart resuscitation technique, scientists said Monday.
A study into cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training found that listening to music with the right tempo helped people keep to a rate of 100 chest compressions per minute — the rate recommended in expert guidelines.
However the study which was published in the BMJ also concluded that although it significantly increased the proportion of lay people delivering compression rates at close to 100 per minute, unfortunately it also increased the proportion of compressions delivered at an inadequate depth. Further research is required to identify music that, when playe...

Yes, you read that right. The story is more complicated than a short headline can covey, but that is the gist of an article of mine in the just-out December issue of Commentary magazine. [Subscription needed.]
The past 15 years have witnessed two undeniable trends: dramatically rising levels of immigration, both low-skilled and high-skilled, and an equally dramatic plunge in crime rates nationally. I don’t argue that increased immigration in the past 15 years is the primary cause of falling crime rates, but I do argue that the evidence punches a gaping hole in the Lou-Dobbs contention that immigrants have clogged our prisons and unleashed a new wave of crime.
In the Commentary article, and in an earlier Cato Free Trade Bulletin, I cite Census data that show that incarceration rates for i...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
Lou Dobbs has quit his news anchor job at CNN, his network home for three decades. Currently he’s considering all kinds of offers, including opportunities in politics.
Dobbs has a reputation as an anti-immigration racist and a right-wing nut. His detractors lump him in with Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck. And, of course, Hitler.
I confess – for years I watched the now-defunct “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on CNN. Whenever I let that detail slip, friends respond with shock or horror. Or both. But that’s because they assume I watched Dobbs for his politics. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Lou is the grandfather I never knew. If you factor in his use of language – words like balderdash and phrases like &#8...

I came across this interesting write-up on Top Health Innovations for 2009 and 2 products caught my eye.

Firstly a modern makeover for the stethoscope — the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3200 With Zargis Cardioscan. Not only has it got a State-of-the-art sound sensor, but it can also capture heartsounds for later playback and transmit them to your laptop via Bluetooth. The Zargis software helps one to visualize the heartsounds as well as detect and classify suspected heart murmurs.
The other one would be of great interest to a certain “cutaneous alcoholic” ID specialist who laments about doctors who do not like to wash hands. The Xhale HyGreen system keeps track of clean hands in the hospital.

The HyGreen system reminds them to scrub—and keeps a record of who...

In the past eight months, the unemployment rate has jumped from 7.2 percent to 10.2 percent. Here’s why.

Three trillion reasons to hope the Senate is not as fiscally reckless as their counterparts in the House on health care reform.

Obama a federalist? Not quite: “Not yet a year into his administration, Obama’s record on 10th Amendment issues is already clear: He’ll let the states have their way when their policies please blue team sensibilities and he’ll call in the feds when they don’t.” More here.

It’s time to get immigration reform right: “Republican leaders need to liberate themselves from the Lou Dobbs minority within their own ranks that will oppose any legalization. Democratic leaders need to face down their labor-unio...

In his CNN swan song last night, Lou Dobbs told his loyal if shrinking audience that important national issues
are now defined in the public arena by partisanship and ideology rather than by rigorous empirical thought and forthright analysis and discussion. I will be working diligently to change that as best I can.
I would argue that his very act of resigning from his prime-time perch is probably the best contribution he’s made yet to advancing “rigorous empirical thought.”
Since he launched his program “Lou Dobbs Tonight” in 2003, the CNN anchor has been engaged in one long rant against immigration, free trade, and other populist bugaboos. His approach was anything but rigorous and empirical.
In a review of his 2004 book, Exporting America, I critiqued his flabby reasoning and q...

When it comes to understanding how much pain a patient is experiencing, it sure would be easier if we had a Pain Meter like the one shown. We all have different pain thresholds, so what would be painful to one person might just be discomfort to another. Now scientists have come up with a computer program that measures and rates pain.

The computerized test, dubbed Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS), provides a common language for researchers studying the causes of physical pain and its symptoms. In the past, groups of scientists would use different sets of questions to quantify a patient’s physical suffering, making it more difficult to compare results. With the push for health care reform, it’s becoming more important to show in multiple studies t...

Reported in the NST:

Breast cancer survivors in Malaysia are relating their stories and experiences on a website in an effort to reach out to other patients and survivors. The website at www.pinkribbonr2r.my is an interactive platform for anyone who wants to know more about the illness and what to expect when one is going through treatment.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fan, who launched the website yesterday said having such a support system would help cancer survivors as well as patients to cope with their illnesses.
“Reaching out to all women, telling them your stories, sharing your experiences with them might encourage someone to go for a mammogram, and even save someone’s life.

We found out last night (thanks to loonshin) that yet another overseas medical school is opening up a Malaysian campus located in Johore. Newcastle University UK, is establishing an international branch campus in Johor, Malaysia for the provision of its undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees in Medicine. Intake is open for the initial 40 students who will undertake the first two years of the MBBS programme in UK, and will return to Malaysia in 2011 to complete year three to five clinical education. I have added the link to the Medical Schools page.
The NST today also reports on a new nursing school, the International University College of Nursing located in Kota Damansara Selangor. It offers Nursing Science at the undergraduate, master’s and doctorate ...

The Federal Diary column in the Washington Post is a curious piece of newspaper real estate. Most newspaper columns are aimed at the broad general public, but this column is aimed directly at the few hundred thousand government workers in the DC region. The result is that it takes a very government- and union-centric view of the world. The fact that the federal civilian workforce costs taxpayers an enormous $300 billion or so every year is beside the point for the column.
In a briefing with reporters yesterday, the head of the Office of Personnel Management complained about a Lou Dobbs television bit that featured this data that I assembled from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The Federal Diary columnist called me yesterday about the data, and I explained to him the shortcomings of ...

Also moved a number of blogs to our Doctor blogroll - YP, Azman, Anandini, Gracie Lau, Jing, John Lin, Linda Tjoa and Man Keat. As the Doctor Blogroll has grown far too long, we have split it into Doctor Blogroll (I) and Doctor Blogroll (II). Please send us feedback if you wish to be blogrolled or if you have graduated.

Try as they might, supporters of big government spending cannot make federal programs work very well. The Department of Energy, for example, has been plagued by mismanagement, cost overruns, and scandals for decades.
Today, the Washington Post reports on the poor performance of DoE’s environmental clean-up programs. As I reviewed in the linked essay, these enormously costly programs have been plagued by mismanagement for at least 25 years. Last week, Lou Dobbs lambasted DOE’s National Ignition Facility in California for its huge cost overruns (Hat Tip: Harrison Moar).
I summarize these costly projects and other DoE boondoggles here. With bipartisan support for increases to energy subsidies, we can expect a raft of bipartisan boondoggles developing over coming months and y...

Reported in the Star Online:

The Health Ministry has formed a special task force to expedite the recruitment of doctors in the country.
Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the task force, led by ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Nasir Mohd Ashraf, aimed to cut the recruitment process from two or three months to a month or less.
“We have been talking about the shortage of medical practitioners in the country for a long time,” he told reporters after the ministry’s monthly gathering here yesterday.
“We want to fix this problem as soon as possible.”
Currently, he said the delay was caused by the long wait for candidates to be called in for interview and placement.
The Health Minister also launched the Health Ministry Online Recruitment Drive System, which allows job se...

First it was fungal infestation, leaking sewage and falling ceilings a few years back, followed by wall cracks in the KK Hospital. Yes our goverment hospitals and clinics are back in the news again. This time it was a fire in Putrajaya hospital after a lightning strike that had our Health Minister puzzled and embarassed. Then just a few days later the ceiling of the nearby govt clinic caved in after a thunderstorm. What next? Thankfully there were no injuries reported, but it goes to show how poorly maintained our govt hospitals and clinics are. Looks like it’s not only the Health Ministry staff that need to shape up

Spotted this interesting study in YP’s blog, taken from BBC Health:

Sisters spread happiness while brothers breed distress, experts believe.
Researchers quizzed 571 people aged 17 to 25 about their lives and found those who grew up with sisters were more likely to be happy and balanced.
The University of Ulster said having daughters made a family more open and willing to discuss feelings.
They said the influence of girls was particularly important after distressing family events such as marital break-ups.
The researchers go on to say:

Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families.
However, brothers seemed to have the alternative effect.
Emotional expression is fundamental to good psychological health and having sisters promotes this in families.

MSNBC Health reports:

Having a supportive social network enhances the health benefits of having a few drinks, new research from Japan suggests.
The study of Japanese men years found that moderate to light alcohol consumption, coupled with high levels of social support, were linked to lower rates of heart disease and stroke.
However do take note that this beneficial effect of social support is confined to light-to-moderate drinking. Heavy drinking is risky irrespective of social support level.

But I tell you it’s a great home exercise package - the Nintendo Wii and the Wii fit. The set will allow you to create individual profiles (or “Miis”) in order to save game rankings and points. The Wii Fit game will allow you to select the Miis you create, and I believe it is a great way for the family to interact at home and improve their health and fitness at the same time, and every member of the family can be represented by the individual Miis they create. In fact I found it quite fun as you can customise the Mii look - face, features and even body height and shape to make it look like you! The Wii Fit will fir...

More than 4,000 people, on the waiting list for the “Gift of Life” would have their wishes granted if only the organs of 7,000 who died in road accidents last year had been transplanted.
To get more Malaysians to donate organs, the Government has launched a media campaign costing RM2.4mil which started yesterday.
A new website has been set up, provide the public with the mechanics and details of organ donation and how one can pledge to be an organ donor. The public is also reminded not only to sign up as organ donors, but to inform family members about it.
Our Health Portal page has been updated with the new website. Note that it is still currently only in BM although there is an English version button present. Hopefully the English version will be set up soon.

Sultan Ismail Hospital, infamous for the fact that its opening was delayed by a fungus attack, appears to have been infected again.
A source has revealed that the fungus, said to be of the aspergillus variety, had been spreading over the past few months.
It said the most obvious sign of the fungus was in the hospital’s canteen on the lower ground floor.
“Just look at the wall and you will know what I mean. I am worried the spores of the fungus will be carried to the wards or operation theatres by either visitors or medical staff.”
To check the authenticity of the claim, the NST visited the hospital recently and found the canteen walls infected with what looked like fungus.
Further checks at the visitor centres for both men and women, also at the sam...

I have blogged about this issue several times before, but it’s always good to be reminded. BBC Health reports:

One in 10 people with personal MP3 or CD players could suffer permanent hearing loss because their music is too loud, according to an EU study.
Scientists say those who listen at high volume for more than one hour per day over five years risk permanent harm.
They say up to 10 million people across Europe, including many children and adolescents, could be affected.
The European Commission will now look into whether technical improvements could minimise hearing damage.

Reported on WebMD:

A new study shows that a numbing gel eases pain associated with getting a mammogram and may make women more likely to return for subsequent screenings.
The study’s lead author says in a news release that the numbing gel may act as a simple secret weapon: “We now have something that we know reduces discomfort with screening mammography in women who expect higher discomfort — lidocaine gel.”
One of the factors that may put off women from undergoing screening mammography is the pain/discomfort associated with the procedure. Having personally undergone it myself, I feel the discomfort is bearable, but others have found it pretty painful. It is good to know that a simple lidocaine gel can help make the procedure a much more pleasant one.

Reported on BBC Health:

Two children in Spain have been admitted to a mental health institution to be treated for addiction to their mobile phones, Spanish media report.
The children, aged 12 and 13, were sent to the clinic by their parents, who said they could not carry out normal activities without their handsets.
They were doing badly at school and lying to relatives in order to get money to spend on their phones.
They have been learning to cope without their phones for three months.
Fears have been raised in a number of countries about the adverse effects mobile phone use may have on children. Korea is believed to be the first country in the world to conduct a program to help cure mobile phone addiction among the young. They are an unusual looking lot of paramedics with their cycling helmets, elbow pads and bicycles.
But the additions that seem out of place are integral to their duties at the 12th Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) games here.
The equipment is to aid the four paramedics — members of a mobile clinic — race to the scene of injuries during the games, which began yesterday and end on June 9.
The team is said to be the second of its kind to be formed in the country. The first bicycle team was formed at Kuala Lumpur Hospital two years ago.
The mountain bikes are equipped with, among others, an automated external defibrillator, respiratory equipment and drugs.

If your face looks younger than your years but your hands aren’t keeping up, there’s help.
If you’ve got the funds, plastic surgeons have a host of solutions to make your hands look young again — or at least be a closer match to your face.
“The best place to guess someone’s age is their hands,” says Danny Vleggaar, MD, a physician at Clinique Vert Pre in Geneva, Switzerland, and part of a panel of plastic surgeons discussing new options for rejuvenating aging hands at the annual meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in San Diego.
Pigment changes, age spots, texture changes, loss of fat, contour changes, and prominent veins all contribute to make the hands look older, Vleggaar and his colleagues say.

Much as the skull and crossbones is an unmistakable symbol for poison, a language of graphical icons and pictograms to simplify pharmaceutical indications and interactions might help reduce prescription errors, according to a team here.
On the premise that a picture is worth a thousand words for a busy physician during a brief patient encounter, the French essentially reduced a package insert and patient records to 103 central pictograms, 20 external shapes and shape modifiers, five colors, and eight top-right pictograms.
The symbolic language, complete with its own grammar, was learned in a few hours by volunteer generalists and successfully evaluated, Jean-Baptiste Lamy, Ph.D., Pharm.D., of the University of Paris, and colleagues reported online in BMC Medical ...

The doctor then removes the canister cap and sprays the contents toward the crowd of nurses and doctors viewing the procedure.
It remains unclear who shot the video and who posted it on YouTube, but ...

This is a great DIY version of the office treadmill that I blogged about some time back.

Darren has been very inspired to blog recently and came up with some interesting posts on a New Syndrome called Hypo-money-ism, some Slow learners who were brought for assessment and what makes a Perfect Surgery HO. Pilocarpine shares his thoughts on the recent Induksi that he went through, and the shocking tale of how patients are sometimes not properly assessed by the clinic counter staff.

Here’s another good reason to have a daily cup of coffee. BBC Health reports:

Coffee may cut the risk of dementia by blocking the damage cholesterol can inflict on the body, research suggests.
The drink has already been linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, and a study by a US team for the Journal of Neuroinflammation may explain why.
A vital barrier between the brain and the main blood supply of rabbits fed a fat-rich diet was protected in those given a caffeine supplement.
UK experts said it was the “best evidence yet” of coffee’s benefits.
“Caffeine appears to block several of the disruptive effects of cholesterol that make the blood-brain barrier leaky,” said Dr Jonathan Geiger, who led the study. “High levels of cholesterol are...

Dr Tan Bee Hooi, 37, an anaesthetist with the Penang Hospital who died in Paris on Wednesday following surgery, has done Malaysians proud by donating her organs to patients in France and other countries of Europe.
“She was truly a remarkable woman. Even in death, she has given life,” Malaysian Ambassador to France Datuk S. Thanarajasingam said of Dr Tan, who had succumbed to complications arising from surgeries related to arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her brain.
In a statement issued to Bernama here today, the Malaysian Embassy in Paris said Dr Tan’s father, Datuk Tan Gin Soon, believed that her daughter would have wanted him to donate her organs, given her “deep and abiding interest” to serve fellow human beings.

In conclusion, the study showed that acupuncture, in addition to routine care, resulted in a clinically relevant benefit and was cost effective in patients with dysmenorrhea in primary care practices in Germany.
Reported on MSNBC Health:

Bone tests aren’t just for women anymore. New guidelines are calling for older men to get a routine check for bone-thinning osteoporosis.
There’s news for women, too: A new computerized tool uses more than bone-density tests to predict who is at highest risk of breaking a bone in coming years — by adding in such important risk factors as whether a parent ever broke a hip.
It’s an effort to better target who really needs treatment and who can safely skip it, even before someone’s bones become thin enough to be officially labeled an osteoporosis patient. And it promises a major shift in bone care.
The biggest change: The NOF guidelines recommend a bone-mineral density X-ray test for all men 70 and older, just like women 65 and older have l...

1. For that hair raising effect?
2. For hair that STANDS out in public?
3. For the ‘just WOKE UP’ from bed look?
4. For a more FULLER looking hair?
5. For STRONGER and SEXIER hair?

Hospital clown images too scary

Reported in BBC Health:

Decorating children’s wards with paintings of clowns to create a nurturing atmosphere could backfire, research suggests.
A University of Sheffield study of more than 250 children, aged four to 16, found the images were widely disliked.
Even some of the oldest children found the images scary.
The researchers said the findings, reported in Nursing Standard magazine, highlighted the importance of consulting children in hospital design.
If you were a small kid, wouldn’t you find this image scary?

I know I would!
I guess there is a lot of difference between medical clowning and scaring the heck out of poor sick children!

Spotted in WebMD:

Talking to your children about sex can be embarrassing, awkward, and uncomfortable. Just the thought of having this talk is enough to make many parents blush. But not having it may be setting your children up for serious problems down the road — including teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases — say leading psychoanalysts at the annual meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association in New York City.
Here are some tips from the experts:
1: Start Young and Go Slow
2: Never Use Pet Names for Body Parts
3: View Current Events as an Opportunity
4: Don’t Use Yourself as the Example
5: Talk About the Different Types of Sex

I came across an interesting article in the recent Sunday Star by Dr Milton Lum on the social accountability of medical schools.

Many in the medical profession have wondered whether there has been more emphasis on the quantity instead of the quality of the graduates. The consequences in other areas of studies may not be that significant, but in Medicine, it can be a matter of life and death for a patient or potential patient, which means all the population.
Healthcare delivery is so complex today that it is crucial to have doctors who put a premium on patient safety. If one has to make a choice, the public interest is better served by fewer good quality doctors than larger numbers who are deficient in their knowledge, skills or attitudes.
There has to be enhanced communication between th...

I have also updated the links in the Dental Schools page. I have added the Univerisiti Teknologi Mara Dental Faculty and the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia Dental Faculty to the list.

As if it was not bad enough having to provide super-sized beds, chairs and ambulances for obese patients, there is now a need for Super-Sized Autopsy Tables for Big Corpses:

The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner’s Office has a new addition: An autopsy table that can support 1,000 pounds.
The standard used to be around 300 pounds. But more medical examiners said they need larger tables to accommodate larger bodies.
Larger morgue drawers and other equipment used to carry and store the dead are also in demand.
Thankfully we have not reached such a stage but the NST yesterday carried a story of how Malaysians don’t seem to bother much about being overweight as the local food is just too good!

Malaysians are among the least weight-conscious people in Asia.

There have been a lot of news reports lately on China-made toys being recalled due to lead contamination. The NST today reports on our local situation. Sad to say, Malaysia does not have any mandatory toy safety standards that manufacturers have to comply with. Fomca is concerned because it recently conducted a random testing of 24 toys from supermarkets and hypermarkets and found 23 of them containing lead on their surface.
Apart from lead contamination, there are other factors we need to bear in mind when buying toys for children. NNCC Toy Safety suggests seven possible toy dangers:
 1. Sharp edges: Toys made of brittle plastic or glass can break easily, exposing sharp points and edges. Wooden, metal, and plastic toys sometimes have sharp edges due to poor construction.
 2. Small parts...

The buying of condoms should be made easier as some people are still bashful about buying them at pharmacies or supermarkets, said Sarawak Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Micheal Manyin.
He has suggested that condom vending machines be set up as one of the ways to prevent the spread of the HIV and AIDS, especially for those who have sex with multiple partners.
Manyin said this was not meant to encourage free sex but to protect others from getting infected.
He was speaking to reporters after opening the one-day multi-faith public forum on “Breaking Down Barriers of Discrimination and Stigma” in conjunction with the World AIDS Days 2007 yesterday.
Manyin said many still hesitated to buy condoms openly despite knowing the risks involved when havin...

Paracetamol and keeping active are the best cures for back pain, according to Australian researchers who warn that other treatments do not work.
A Lancet study of 240 back pain sufferers found anti-inflammatory drugs and spinal manipulation did not make any difference to recovery time.
Yet currently, both treatments are recommended in several guidelines.
Experts said patients needed to be reassured that avoiding bed rest and taking paracetamol would work.
The patients in the study had already received simple treatment advice from their GP to keep active, avoid bed rest and take paracetamol for the pain. The study found no difference in recovery times after 12 weeks in patients who also received diclofenac or spinal manipulation. Almost all the patients had recovered by...

WebMD reports:

Take a walk around the neighborhood and call me in the morning.
That’s what you’re likely to hear from your doctor if several big medical groups succeed in their latest public relations push. The groups, including the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Sports Medicine, want doctors to order regular exercise for practically all their patients.
The new campaign is called “Exercise is Medicine.”
Medical groups, insurers, and even top government officials for years have struggled to convince Americans to exercise more, hoping to motivate an ever-more sedentary American society. Alert after alert warns that the economy cannot sustain the cost of care for the two-thirds of American adults who are overweight or obese.
Now doctors...

WebMD reports that The Lancet’s Oct. 27 edition includes an Irish psychiatrist’s review of 20 medical romance novels. He randomly chose and read 20 romance novels that took place in a medical setting, mostly in primary care or emergency medicine settings. His conclusions?

There was a marked preponderance of brilliant, tall, muscular, male doctors with chiselled features, working in emergency medicine; they were commonly of Mediterranean origin and had personal tragedies in their pasts. Female doctors and nurses tended to be skilled, beautiful, and determined, but still compassionate; many had overcome substantial personal and professional obstacles in their lives. Protagonists of both sexes had frequently neglected their personal lives to care better for their patients, many o...

Spotted on WebMD:

The drug company Pfizer announced that it will stop selling its inhaled insulin product Exubera for financial reasons.
In January 2006, Exubera became the first inhaled insulin to get FDA approval. Exubera delivers short-acting insulin via an inhaler, providing an alternative to insulin injections.
“Despite our best efforts, Exubera has failed to gain the acceptance of patients and physicians. We have therefore concluded that further investment in this product is unwarranted,” Jeff Kindler, Pfizer’s chairman and CEO, says in a Pfizer news release.
“We will work with physicians to transition Exubera patients to other treatment options in the next three months,” says Kindler.

Reported in BBC News:

Scientists and global health campaigners have welcomed the early results of a malaria vaccine trial in African infants.
Tests showed the vaccine gave a high level of protection, and was safe
The results, published online by the Lancet, appear to bring closer the prospect of a vaccine against one of the developing world’s biggest killers.
Every 30 seconds a child in Africa child dies from malaria - around one million every year.
So an effective vaccine would have massive life-saving potential.
There are at least 300 million acute cases of malaria each year globally, resulting in more than a million deaths. Around 90% of these deaths occur in Africa, mostly in young children. Malaria is Africa’s leading cause of under-five mortality (20%) and constitutes 1...

Following yesterday’s news article on treatment of non-emergency cases in ERs, the Health Minister has denied the veracity of the report and said that Emergency units will treat all patients.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek denied yesterday a newspaper report which stated that the emergency units of government hospitals would no longer accept normal patients from next year.
He said the report was incorrect and that his ministry had not made such a proposal.
Dr Chua said that from next year, the services of all health clinics would be extended to midnight to reduce the queues at government hospitals.
“Only a small portion of those seeking treatment at the hospital emergency units are classified as requiring emergency treatment,” he said after attending a Hari Raya gath...

Despite the MCA and the Federation of Taoist Associations of Malaysia are preparing a 20-point guideline booklet on the Do’s and Dont’s when consulting a medium, it looks like our gullible public is still not getting the message about bogus mediums who cheat them of their money and ask for sexual favours. Even Datuk Michael Chong is sounding the warning on crooked mediums after encountering far too many such cases, some of them with tragic consequences. Today we have another case of a woman being molested when seeking to get rid of bad luck. I find it rather difficult in this day and age to understand why anyone would think that getting undressed and allowing the so-called medium to “put his finger into her private parts” can be part of the treatment.
MedPageToday reports:

CT colonography, the heir presumptive to optical colonoscopy, has won a clinical round here for detection of developing neoplasia.
The noninvasive modality, better known as virtual colonoscopy, equaled standard colonoscopy in a study of more than 6,000 patients, producing similar detection rates for advanced neoplasia, David H. Kim, M.D., of the University of Wisconsin, and colleagues, reported in the Oct. 4 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
While this development is good news indeed as it would do away with the dreaded bowel preparation for a colonscopy *shudder*, experts warn that the accuracy of CTC may vary from centre to centre, and have expressed concern about radiation exposure, especially with repeated CTC follow-up studies.
While discussing Fibrate’s post on Irrational Fears, Jimbo jokingly asked what the fear of working was called. On consulting the Phobia List, I found 3 possibilities:
Ergasiophobia - 1) Fear of work or functioning 2) Surgeon’s fear of operating
Ergophobia - Fear of work
Ponophobia - Fear of overworking or of pain
Coincidentally, I came across this article in the Sun newspaper today that talks about Laborophobia. China Daily reports:

Laborophobia is an irrational fear of work. Work-related phobia is an anxiety disorder which is unique because it can occur in people who do not suffer from general anxiety disorders, says Dr Michael Linden, head of the psychiatric clinic at Berlin’s Freie University.

In reply to Fibrate’s post about Pharma Freebies, I dug out 2 towels and even a pair of slippers. Looks like Sanofi underwear might not be too far-fetched after all
Fibrate made a good point though about it being a Win Win situation — afterall the pharmas do gain free advertising when we actually make use of their freebies!

Following the initial news report on the eKesihatan scheme, there have been many news reports with conflicting accounts from the various parties involved. We have also been having a (currently) 8-page discussion about the issue in the DOBBs forums. Suffice to say it’s been a matter of what A said Vs what B said Vs what C said. Have a look at the various news reports and see if you can come to any conclusion!

Reported in the Star today:

Emergency care services are set for a major overhaul early next year, Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said.
The measures include training ambulance drivers on basic emergency care, procurement of new vehicles and equipment, and centralised call centres in every state hospital.
Dr Ismail said the first phase of the drivers’ training module, already sent out to each state, included educating them on their role and job functions, how to inspect their vehicle, adherence to traffic rules, ethics, effective communication and driving techniques.
The second module, he said, would teach them basic emergency care like cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to carry a stretcher and use a wheelchair, treat wounds and immobilise patients correctly.

Reported on MedPage Today:

Just because adolescents go to bed, that doesn’t mean they stop calling and texting their friends, and that may leave them bleary-eyed in the morning, researchers here reported.
Adolescents who use their mobile phones for calling friends and sending and receiving text messages after bedtime awaken sleep-deprived and tired, Jan Van den Bulck, Ph.D., of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven here, reported in the Sept. 1 issue of Sleep.
The study concluded that mobile phone use after lights out is very prevalent among adolescents, and its use is related to increased levels of tiredness. There is no safe dose and no safe time for using the mobile phone for text messaging or for calling after lights out. Perhaps it might be a good idea to make sure your kids turn off ...

Breech delivery is not without risks and possible complications even in the best of hands. Imagine trying it out for the first time when you are at sea, with only a new roll of paper towels and a first aid handbook in hand. Not only did captain Ed Kiesel deliver his cook’s baby sucessfully but he had to administer CPR to the baby as well. Kiesel used net twine, sterilized in boiling water, to tie off the umbilical cord and cut the newborn free from his mother. Read the amazing story here.
Spotted in Yahoo News via The Dilbert Blog:

A dwarf performer at the Edinburgh fringe festival had to be rushed to hospital after his penis got stuck to a vacuum cleaner during an act that went horribly awry.
Daniel Blackner, or “Captain Dan the Demon Dwarf”, was due to perform at the Circus of Horrors at the festival known for its oddball, offbeat performances.
The main part of his act saw him appear on stage with a vacuum cleaner attached to his member through a special attachment.
The attachment broke before the performance and Blackner tried to fix it using extra-strong glue, but unfortunately only let it dry for 20 seconds instead of the 20 minutes required.
He then joined it directly to his organ. The end result? A solid attachment, laughter, mortification and … ho...
