H/T Chip Hanlon
Apparently so.
Following an extensive remodel, the Penthouse Club in Tampa, Fla., is finally ready for next summer’s Republican National Convention. Club operator DeWayne Levesque has installed two secluded VIP sections, which he hopes will help his club attract a bigger share of the 50,000 visitors expected to descend upon the city on Aug. 27 for four days of conservative politics and liberal partying. In addition to the club’s new carpets and furniture, the private rooms are designed to provide cover so that camera-shy donors, politicians and aides can enjoy the strippers without fear of getting caught, he said.
A few blocks from the Penthouse Club, another strip club owner, Joe Redner, said he has high hopes for what the convention means for business at his a...

Guess some folks are sensitive about the President going up to Martha Vineyard on vacation and being called on it.
So, they sent me about ten of these post cards with different messages.
OK and the point is?
Tell the President to get back to Washington, call Congress back into session and do the people’s business.
Don’t you understand Americans are hurting out there?
The President needs to do his job and not vacation. (Source: FullosseousFlap's Dental Blog)

It’s what – 10 years or more? – since we began to wonder when web technologies such as RSS, wikis and social bookmarking sites would be widely adopted by most working scientists, to further their productivity.
The email that I received today which began “I’ve read 3 interesting papers” and included 1 .doc, 3 .docx and 4 .pdf files as attachments is indicative of the answer to this question, which is “not any time soon.”
I’ve given up trying to educate colleagues in best practices. Clearly, I’m the one with the problem, since this is completely normal, acceptable behaviour for practically everyone that I’ve ever worked with.
Great video by ZdoggMD (via Kevin MD)

It is pretty unfortunate that the internet abounds with anti-vaccination misinformation, in part from pretty much discredited “work” by Andrew Wakefield. Malaysia is not spared too for there may be parents influenced by so much misinformation in the Internet about vaccination. In the past there have also been misguided communities such as the religious sect which refused vaccination resulting in a poliomyelitis outbreak in 1992. The only solution seems to be constant education but it is an uphill battle.

– What British bloke would ever admit to reading the IKEA manual for that latest peculiarly named objet functionale in pine? Well for a change, there are some IKEA manuals you really should read before assembling, including those for the Litsabbur and the Tjardiis. Probably best to avoid the Dindassur altogether though…

Wikipedia defines factoid as “a questionable or spurious—unverified, incorrect, or fabricated—statement presented as a fact, but with no veracity.”
Last night I was enjoying a TV documentary series, The Story of Science, when I heard a startling factoid, namely:

If the “empty space” inside the atoms that make up people were removed, the entire human population would fit inside a sugar cube.

What the? Can we improve the veracity of this factoid?

Atoms
Let’s start with atoms. Assuming that atoms are spherical, with a central nucleus which is also spherical, we can calculate atomic and nuclear volumes. A Google search for average diameter of an atomic nucleus suggests that the “average” nuclear diameter is 1e-14 metres, ~ 10 000 times less than...

SuperTherapist decided that if she gave out any advice today, she may just need to fear for her life, so she asked me to help out. SuperTherapist may need your help to vanquish the peripheralist demons from her memory – therapeutic videos to soothe the soul.

If you haven’t heard them before – and you get a chance to see them live – just GO! These guys are at least partially responsible for the odd sounds coming from my house over the last day…

And an example of virtuosity of another kind…

Enjoy your weekend!

A cutesy animal story for Wednesday. I am sorry about this, it couldn’t wait until Friday.
Awwww! Cute animal story?
Just read on… but first, my humble and most sincere apologies to any German readers.
THE GERMAN TOURIST JUMPED IN AND SAVED THE DOG.

UPON GETTING BACK UP ON THE BRIDGE HE CHECKED THE DOG OUT AND TOLD THE OWNER THAT

“ZER DOG IS OK, AND VILL BE FINE”
SHE ASKED IF HE WAS A VET?

HE REPLIED, “I’m not only VET, I’M DARNED SOAKED!”

It’s quite a common phenomenon, and sometimes can stand us in good stead – after all, if we can think of the worst things that can happen, then plan to avert those possible disasters, then life will be sweet, yes? ermmmm – no, as a matter of fact. Catastrophising can actually function to narrow our thinking down, reducing the range of options we can come up with to manage situations, and it can also function to focus us on things that haven’t worked out while at the same time minimising our appreciation of things that are working well.
In chronic pain, catastrophising is often an outcome to measure – the t...

Below the jump is a joke I came across that I shared with about 5 people this morning, and sadly only 1 of them got the joke and thought it was funny.
Personally I thought it was hilarious. It’s one of those “walked into a bar” sort of jokes, but only works in text form…
I’ll post a photo clue to help you. Let me know what you think…

SuperTherapist has been on the job, and passes on these tips to make your days go well!

Can you tell I’m procrastinating?

You know, I have seen worse clangers – like the neurosurgeon who said ‘I have no knowledge of psychology, but I’m sure if you ask them to assess [Joe Bloggs] they will write you a lengthy report that you can’t understand…’

And this one is because I will be The Perfect Mother – one day – and to do so I will need SuperTherapist’s gear. Or something in the form of liquid refreshment. Child of my Womb is coming to stay the night and sew a dress. I may go grey before the night is over. But I will be grey and fat because we both luuuuurve chocolate!

My world may have been rocked by the late-night quakes, but my humour remains THE SAME! Sorry.
I was talking to SuperTherapist the other day, and she whispered some sayings to help maintain that sense of calm and serenity that is necessary when returning to work after a week away. I’m not so sure this was all that helpful...”Be patient and achieve all things. Be impatient and achieve all things faster.”
Neither were these, probably…

Lately, I realized that the Web’s Future (or The Future of the Web) is not Facebook. No, it doesn’t matter that all your friends (enemies) are there, doesn’t matter that all companies are moving to Facebook-based pages, that everything you like is there, and your mum is sending you friendship requests.
No, the web’s future (or The Future of the Web) is much larger than Facebook. The future of the web is an application that allows you to play in the financial market, find conferences and even plot a map with them, can analyse the stars, check browser histories, do science and screw the life of your worst enemies with a complex syntax and obscure data typing. I might have forgotten that this application saved lives in Haiti, intends to bring peace to the Middle East ...

A recent courtroom drama in the midst of an ongoing inquest reports what one lawyer as having this exchange with a famous Thai Pathologist
” Razak puts it to Pornthip that Teoh strangled himself. He says that the other four doctors had found no such evidence of strangulation.”
~ I guess only lawyers can conclude someone can strangle himself to death.
“Razak: From Level 14 – 99 feet above ground – he was unconscious, so his body would be heavier.
Pornthip: No difference. Scientifically how could there be weight-loss according to consciousness?”

We admitted we were grateful for the role humour plays in our recovery, and our laughter had become unmanageable.
Came to believe a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity, and a little laughter now and then couldn’t hurt.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him, and laughed about how if we measured what we understood about God on a scale of one to ten, the needle on the gauge would probably point to minus one, and we don’t need to tell you which end of the scale is which, which makes us laugh, because we are desperate, aren’t we?
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, and when appropriate, laughed at ourselves and the foibles of addiction.

There’s a new disease which i think we should notify the MOH, and that is typo-itis. It’s an affliction which seems to have permeated their notification forms. Hat-tip-up to @Raggyhaw of the MMR doctors forums for this one. (Click the image below to see a larger version)

Typo-itis results in some new diseases which we’ve never heard of before:

Sometimes, I wish that the famous Watergate Hotel in my beloved Washington, DC was called Waterfountain. It would be much more difficult for the cliche-driven media to use a “fountain” suffix at the end of every scandal (just imagine the Climategate becoming the Climatefountain), but in some situations it would be great.
Think now that the Pepsigate (really? Newsweek. Slow news day?) would become, in a excellent fit, the Pepsifountain.
More Pepsi for everyone!! (Source: Blind.Scientist)

Here in New Zealand it is most definitely Friday in mid-winter. As regular readers will know, I’m not one given to recommend medications – but in deepest, darkest winter there comes a time whenI think it’s wise to consider effective treatments for our winter blues.
…This one works for kids too!
And I’m prescribing this one for my daughter, because she’s too smart to put up with dumb boys. And I’m too young to be a grandma.
Have a great weekend!

Staying on the thirsty-topic of my earlier post, I think Pepsi contributed more to Science and related fields than most of us could. I had lost all hope that corporations could be good, but I was wrong. I don’t usually drink cola, but when I do I prefer (and always will) Pepsi.
After I finish my seventh cold Pepsi can of the day (it’s hot here!) I might even want to check Science Blogs again.
Cheers, with Pepsi. (Source: Blind.Scientist)

Ever been told you’re talking too fast?
More than a few people with ADHD have. You might enjoy this response by Chris Matthews who is the host of Hardball, a political talk show on MSNBC who was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno show. You might enjoy Jay’s response even more. It starts about 3.35, and I think it was on May 20th, 2010.

So he was asked to demonstrate as ABG is needed for one patient.
He took the needle, inserted it to patient’s wrist at an obviously wrong site for radial artery, and obtained nothing but some air. (Specialist and MO frowned, thought he was going to withdraw and re-attempt).
Surprisingly, he pulled out the needle like ending a procedure, passing it to the nurse, “Go and analyze this in the ABG machine…”
Specialist stopped him, “What are you going to analyze there? It’s just air!”
And he said, “Ya, you asked me to take arterial blood GAS right? I got it!”

At the end of a long hard week, there’s something lovely about thinking ‘One more job to do and it’s Gin & Tonic time!’. Which brings me rather rapidly to today’s tips from Supertherapist. I couldn’t possibly admit to being in any need of her advice, but you may know one or two people who could benefit from remembering the wisdom brought to you from experience.
Remember, when speaking to certain doctors, do NOT say “Aw, did I step on your poor little bitty ego?”
When conversing with managers, NEVER say “I’m trying to imagine you with a personality.”
In supervision, be cautious about saying “I just want revenge. Is that so wrong?”

Thanks goes out to John for sending me this video. It’s a pretty funny rendition of what happens when corporate advertising mixes with Christian worship :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYaTSbCGY50

I’m not sure about the rest of this guy Tim Hawkin’s clips though, “Cletus Take the Reel” might appeal to fans of Carrie Underwood, but at all costs avoid the “I Don’t Drink Beer” clip – it’s just plain bad on so many levels ;P
On a similar topic, this reminded me of another great worship related “info-mercial” : Me Worship…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9dvVp0Nxjo

And to round out this triumvirate of worship related humour, how could I neglect this classic song “Jesus is a friend of mine” by Sonseed!...

As the onset of winter approaches, it’s time to grab every opportunity for humour, fun and silliness. I think it’s vital – all that black winter clothing is so depressing maybe the flat mood is just because of having no colour! While the weather today is chilly, crisp and not too bad – I can feel the bad weather in my bones… So take a break, and enjoy!
After the airline pilot had managed to land the planeinto Wellington airport — albeit bumpily — following a descent through exceptionally heavy weather, she came out of the flight deck to bid the passengers farewell as they gratefully left the plane on their way back to terra firma.
The most memorable comment he received was from a little old lady who asked him politely whether he would pleas...

Here is another essay from Dr. Robert Goldwyn (full references below). It shows his sense of humor. Be More Than You Are Many years ago, I heard the legendary Mario Gonzalez-Ulloa exhort his audience with the words: Be More Than You Are. After the ovation, he left the auditorium but what he said has remained. I am still pondering its meaning. In the heat of the moment, the message seemed clear: rise above your perceived talents and personality; go beyond your supposed limitations, as did, for example, Schindler under more terrible circumstances. In this world, where the haves possess much materially and little spiritually, a desperate need exists for guidance. Gurus, usually self-proclaimed, flourish in the vacuum. Some grow obscenely rich. Society seizes their utterances,...

When a woman of childbearing age presents to a physician or other care-giver complaining of vaginal bleeding and/or pelvic pain, a pelvic ultrasound examination is often performed to assess the etiology of her symptoms. If she has a positive pregnancy test, the major role of ultrasound is to assess whether she has a normal intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), an abnormal IUP, or an ectopic pregnancy. The information provided by ultrasound can be of great value in guiding manage...

This is a PositiveLite.com feature interview:

I first got to know Mark through his blog on The Body (there is a link to it at the end of the post). When launching this site we began chatting on Facebook, and thought he was the perfect person with which to start off the PositiveLite.com interviews.
Mark has been doing what I’ve been aspiring to do for quite some time, and that is use multi-media (i.e. video, writing, images) in a blog format covering all sorts of great topics, and with his flare for writing and wit. Mark’...

Yep, they’ve fixed it!
There may not be an occupational therapy chromosome, but I’m sure the ‘inventors’ of these solutions to everyday problems inherited something they can pass on to generations hence.
If you’ve lost your built-up spoon – don’t despair, simply attach a coffee top to your fork and slurp away!
Now, occupational therapists have forever used simple tools to achieve great things – nothing more so than the old wood and bolt bottle top opener.
Need a support for your child’s drooping head? Prop her up with toys!
But wait, there’s more!
For the therapist who needs to travel – make sure the ergonomics work both at home and in the car!
Going camping? Need a commode? The fresh air version comes with toilet roll as we...

Ahh the mysteries of life. Apparently it hasn’t stopped some scientists from speculating on the reason (Kumar and Kumar. The “researchers” hypothesize that the vertical displacement difference is beneficial for thermo-regulatory purposes. In layman’s language, it results in cooler balls.

In our view, one additional, yet overlooked cause for the naturally displaced level could be, simply, to expose more surface area of the active organ to cooler environs. While it is an accepted fact that suspension of the scrotum outside the abdominal cavity is paramount to the functional efficiency of testes in a prefe...

First up, a quick quiz…
Can you cry under water?
How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?
Why is it that people say they ’slept like a baby’ when babies wake up like every two hours?
Why is ‘bra’ singular and ‘panties’ plural?
Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

Darren has a hilarious post on some not so brilliant HOs.
I’m sure some of you could share similar close encounters!
One of the worst ones I recall is a chap who I suspect learnt only one thing from his surgical posting. IV drip regime = 6 hourly pints of fluids. So in his next rotation in paediatrics, for a four month old baby, he also ordered 6 hourly pints. Luckily this was stopped in time by the MOs. Needless to say, one wonders how these people got through medical school!

I generally skip over “From the Blogosphere”, a (mostly) weekly-summary of one or two blog posts in Nature’s “Authors” section (here is the latest). Why? Well, I’ve always suspected that the title is rather misleading. Now, I have the hard numbers to prove it.

My feed reader contains an archive of 128 articles, dating back to May 10 2007. I used them to create this CSV file with 3 fields: Date, Blog and Source. The “Blog” field contains the name of the primary blog mentioned in “From the Blogosphere”. On rare occasions where 2 blogs are mentioned, 2 entries were added to the CSV file. I skimmed each article rather quickly, so I may have missed blogs that were mentioned in passing.
Next, a short R script:

Judy recently shared the following on her Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) e-mail group. I found it so useful that I asked her to allow it to be published here. Judy readily agreed.
Good morning group, When I read the daily reading on losing a sense of humour it reminded me …
I had to learn to play. When I came to ACA some of the members encouraged me to play by asking what I had never done as a child that I wanted to do.
I wanted to learn to roller skate and I wanted a bicycle. I went out and bought a used pair of skates and a used bike.
My friends took me roller skating and held my hand around the rink until I could go it alone.
It was fun but what I discovered was that what I really wanted to do was dance.
I gave away my skates and took dance lessons and I’ve been dancing for...

Fade Fave: Evidence based merriment
Fade Skinny: Medical humour has a long history, but is short on evidence. The ancient Greeks introduced the world to bodily fluids called the four humours. You would think that a philosophy based on blood, choler, phlegm, and melancholy was no laughing matter. What is the evidence that medical humour benefits staff or patients? We performed a systematic revue, but it was not funny. We propose a randomised controlled trial of medical humour.

After writing recently about post-surgical pain, I’m unexpectedly going to be having some surgery myself today. I’ll be out of circulation for about a month, and hopefully will be back on deck in the New Year.
To all the readers who visit this blog, thank you! Thank you for the comments, the discussion, and the reward of connecting through the internet.
I’ve met people from all around the world, including some places I’ve never heard of (and couldn’t place on a map!). I’ve discovered that interest in pain management ranges from people who want to sell things to ‘fix it’, people who experience their own pain and want to share their knowledge, and people who are clinicians of all persuasions to some very dear friends who find me via this medium...

No. I am the Christmas Grinch right now. After hearing various cheesy and horrid renditions of Christmas Carols when I went into the local shopping mall, I can tell you the LAST thing I want to think of are Season’s Greetings!
So, nothing Christmassy here – instead you’ll see good, wholesome humour of the worst kind. Sorry.

More drivel in our Mainstream media. Are these reporters n00bs or what? I am referring to rubbish medical misinformation like Boob-staring good for men Study: It boosts their lifespan

HERE’s a simple “secret” to ensure longevity for men – stare at women’s breasts for 10 minutes a day to live an additional five years.
Both Sin Chew Daily and China Press reported that a German research published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that men ogling at breasts for 10 minutes a day was equivalent to a 30-minute gym workout.
Sin Chew Daily reported yesterday that the team had spent five years researching 200 men.
This BS drivel came out quite some time ago - you might have gotten it as some viral email.
Simply put, it NEVER was published in the New England Journal of Medicine...

You want to achieve inner peace? While still working on my latest piece about Boots the Chemists, I thought I should pass on at once some advice.to maintain your wellness levels I have no idea of its origin but it was passed on to me by Lindy (who regularly contributes excellent comments here)
.

I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me and we all could use more calm in our lives. By following the simple advice I heard on a Medical TV show, I have finally found inner peace. A Doctor proclaimed the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started.

So I looked around my house to see things I’d started and hadn’t finished, and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle...

And with the launching of PositiveLite.com means all my focus has been going there as we are going viral on world aids day, the one holy HIV day of the year. It’s the day we run people who are actually living this virus into the ground by having to attend a million events during and around that day. Plus we’re usually the people propped up for the media/panels/events to send out our annual message. I consider it like the Queen’s one address to her subjects for the year.
My annual “She’s Still Here 2009 Tour” is looking to be a small one. This is the one thing that coincides with Dec. 1st. I pop up in the media (this year it may only be Proud FM) to let everyone know that “She’s still h...

Dear Tech Support:
Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed that the new program began making unexpected changes to the accounting modules, limiting access to flower and jewelry applications that had operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.
In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.9 but installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0 and NBA 3.0. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs and House Cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these...

…
Note: Though this is a medical post that concerns hospital care in the USA, I believe the issues covered in these videos are universally applicable to hospitals and patients all over the world. I urge everyone, especially those visitors who are not from the USA to view the videos.

I just read this on Psychology of Pain:
13 Things You Don’t Say to People with Chronic Pain
1. You don’t look sick.
2. Maybe if you just got out more.
3. You can learn to live with it.
4. You just have to tough it out.
5. It’s all in your head.
6. You’re just having a bad day.
7. This will pass.
8. Just get more exercise.
9. It can’t be that bad.
10. It must be neat not to work.
11. Just be more positive.
12. It could be worse.
13. There’s people worse off than you .
Yep, I think I’d inflict pain on anyone who said any of these to me.
I got this one the other day from Manly Jack – a friend of his has just had a heart attack and is confined to walking for 5 minutes at a time – the rest he has to REST. Which means far too much time on t...

This picture I came across is pretty relevant in medical practice and a reminder to all - doctors, patients and health ministers (yes, those who might think medicine is like instant mee)

You could have perhaps one or even two when it comes to clinic visits. All three? Nope. Perhaps this sign should be hung at all clinics

Don’t take this Friday funny thing too far – some people do…

And for those who are struggling for something to dothis weekend – uses for duct tape, see below:

But actually, go here if you want to know how to do this for real…though that’s a paper tape version. For those who don’t know – great for tailors dummies when you’re sewing costumes or clothing!
For more really silly things to do with duct tape – these guys can’t really be beaten! Kids, do not do this at home (pick somewhere more wicked)
I think that’s about it from me today – got to go find some more duct tape from somewhere…. (Source: HealthSkills Weblog)

“Come on! Wash your hands with Elmo! Wash, wash, wash!” the Muppet from Sesame Street sings in a public service announcement released Tuesday by the Obama administration. “Sneeze into your arm with Elmo,” the character adds. “Ah-choo!”
Oh I agree with the choice of Elmo. Miss Piggy would have indeed been a public relations disaster.

Anyway if any surgeon is reading this, it’s really quite easy to set up a blog, and C&P YouTube code into each post. It really isn’t brain surgery, lol.

Joke sent via my favorite Psycho, and kiddies, no this is not a real resuscitation manoeuvre
A father walks into a restaurant with his young son.. He gives the young boy three 10 sen coins to play with to keep him occupied.
Suddenly, the boy starts choking and going blue in the face .. The father realises the boy has swallowed the coins and starts slapping him on the back..
The boy coughs up 2 of the 10 sen coins but is still choking. Looking at his son, the father is panicking, shouting for help.
A well dressed, attractive, and serious looking woman, in a blue business suit is sitting at a coffee bar reading a newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee.
At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup down, neatly folds the newspaper, places it on the counter, gets up from her...

I’m no fan of ergonomics for ‘preventing pain’, despite my couple of postgraduate papers in it! So when I found these couple of cartoons, I’m sorry I couldn’t stop myself…

I’ve been needling acupuncturists for a while now – perhaps after this I should stop?

OK, OK, I’m retreating NOW!

Because laughter is the best medicine, I thought to share the occasional links I locate while recovering from having my tonsils removed. The operation was on Tuesday, today is Thursday evening, and I have a neck that is twice its normal width, a throat that is a strange combination of colours and textures, and probably far too much codiene in my system to make any sense at all. Despite this I managed to find The Devil’s Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce with some of the best witticisms there are – I particularly liked this definition of Accident - n. An inevitable occurrence due to the action of immutable natural laws.
and this: Wedding - n. A ceremony at which two persons undertake to become one, one undertakes to become nothing, and nothing undertakes to become supportable.

Yenjai.net has an interesting tale to tell. Patients asking for discounts - not uncommon in Malaysia, perhaps even more common in Penang, so I am told (these canny Penangites will ask for discounts for everything, probably even the free air in petrol stations). Quoting Yenjai:
While I was typing out the treatment for the young gentleman, suddenly he asked: As I am a poor student, do you think you can give me some discount for the consultation?
I answered: I will see to that.
I was contemplating it while he walked towards the door. His handphone started ringing and he pulled it out from his pocket.
It was the latest model of Iphone!
I guess “poor students” have other priorities in life. You can’t always judge patients by appearance though. A retired physician once told me ...
