Please be informed that the MMR Forums are temporarily down. There was an issue with the hosting services and this has been apparently been fixed but “It looks like name servers are not yet responding for this domain however. This should resolve once the dns updates have time to propagate. ”
The forums should be up again within 24 hours.
Thank you for your patience.

There was a problem with the submission form but this has now been fixed.

There is an ongoing overhaul of all the links from the MMR (the ones in the top menu as static pages) and we have or are in the process of removing dead links from us. If you have a new URL or a new site to link, please send us a note.
Many blogs are dead and I guess this is the result of Facebook and Twitter! If you have a blog, I think Social networking sites and micro-blogging sites such as Twitter do not replace your blog entirely. There is still an important role for blogs to share information which Facebook and Twitter cannot replace.

Those who register as institutions can post advertisements for locum positions. In addition to that, they can search through the uploaded resumes to find suitable candidates for any vacancies.
We stand on the shoulders of giants is a teaching blog dedicated to the late Emeritus Professor T J Danaraj, the foundation Dean of the University of Malaya Medical Centre. The blog is moderated by Dr. Wong Yin Onn.
Prof Danaraj meticulously documented the physical signs seen in his patients for the purpose of teaching medical students. Thousands of slides were made in his long teaching career.
I believe our web hosting has completed the server migration. This morning, the MMR seems to load a lot faster! I know it has been sluggish for months and months. We also have been experiencing frequent database connection errors.
I must say when things were getting really bad, updating the blog became a frustrating exercise but when things work well, it is a joy.
I believe the problems were due to heavy traffic and I am glad that the webhosting has decided to move us to another server.
If your experience is the same or the contrary, do give a shout.

Breast cancer survivors in Malaysia are relating their stories and experiences on a website in an effort to reach out to other patients and survivors. The website at www.pinkribbonr2r.my is an interactive platform for anyone who wants to know more about the illness and what to expect when one is going through treatment.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fan, who launched the website yesterday said having such a support system would help cancer survivors as well as patients to cope with their illnesses.
“Reaching out to all women, telling them your stories, sharing your experiences with them might encourage someone to go for a mammogram, and even save someone’s life.

We found out last night (thanks to loonshin) that yet another overseas medical school is opening up a Malaysian campus located in Johore. Newcastle University UK, is establishing an international branch campus in Johor, Malaysia for the provision of its undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees in Medicine. Intake is open for the initial 40 students who will undertake the first two years of the MBBS programme in UK, and will return to Malaysia in 2011 to complete year three to five clinical education. I have added the link to the Medical Schools page.
The NST today also reports on a new nursing school, the International University College of Nursing located in Kota Damansara Selangor. It offers Nursing Science at the undergraduate, master’s and doctorate ...

I finally got down to updating our blogroll and deleted a few dead/dying blogs. Also moved a number of blogs to our Doctor blogroll - YP, Azman, Anandini, Gracie Lau, Jing, John Lin, Linda Tjoa and Man Keat. As the Doctor Blogroll has grown far too long, we have split it into Doctor Blogroll (I) and Doctor Blogroll (II). Please send us feedback if you wish to be blogrolled or if you have graduated.

We’ve mentioned Maggot therapy in this blog and the squeamish would be glad to know it’s no better than gel for wound healing so a new study says.
A UK study found that maggots (larval therapy) were no quicker at helping leg ulcers to heal or get rid of bacteria than the standard treatment based on hydrogel, and they were on the whole more painful, although they did speed up removal of dead tissue (debridement).
The study was the work of lead researcher Professor Nicky Cullum, deputy head of health sciences at the University of York, and colleagues also from York and other UK research centres, and is published in the 19 March issue of BMJ.

1. Comments are working again. Thanks to everyone who told me about the problem -- I don't know what it was, but my technical consultant (Spousal Unit) turned off the spam firewall and things look fine.

2. Help me, lazyweb! I can enter html tables just fine, unless there's an image upstream -- then MT inserts a dozen or more <br> tags above the table! I've tried <br clear=all> and every kind of spacing between the table and the character right before it. No amount of text between the table and the image seems to have any effect. My stylesheet is here and you can view source to see the main index, but I can't see any obvious cause of the weirdness. (Source: Open Reading Frame)

Conclusion:
This person would be better off completing the 4 years compulsory service, before trying to apply for residency in the US. Especially since the US requires a ‘Statement of Need’ from the MOH.
PS I have added a new posting category in the MMR - Training - and I’ll be slowly recategorising previous posts related to this topic.

Changes to Dental Heroes in 2009
In fact, I anticipate a number of exciting developments here at the Dental Heroes Blog throughout 2009. I think the most noticeable change that you can expect in the first few months of 2009 is an entirely new look(theme) for Dental Heroes. I love the current look, but I’ve decided that Dental Heroes has added so much new content this past year that more organization is needed. I also want you to be able ...

Follow me on Twitter
I’ve been using a now quite popular social networking service called Twitter for over a year now to connect with my friends. I thought, well, it works so well to connect with my friends, that it would be cool to use to connect with Dental Heroes’ readers as well. So, I recently set up a Dental Heroes Twitter account.

What is Twitter?
So, before I explain how I intend to interact with you via Twitter, I want those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about to get a better sense of what Twitter is. As usual, I’ll defer to the trusty Wikipedia to clearly describe Twitter for you, as I’m sure it does a better job than I could of explaining. According to Wikipedia, Twitter is:
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service...

Just a quick post to announce the launch of my new site, dentalplancards.com. The site is dedicated to providing individuals, families, and groups with access to DentalPlans.com discount dental plans.
As an affiliate, I want to do my part to ensure that everybody who’s looking to save money at the dentist can do so at an affordable price. This is especially important with the state of our economy these days.
I don’t want to turn this into a commercial, but if you’re interested in saving 10%-60% at the dentist on most dental care procedures and do not currently have access to dental insurance, you should really check it out.

I am sure photography is popular as a hobby amongst doctors, just like any other profession. How many though take the trouble to come up with websites to display their creative work?
Well I know of two colleagues who have done so:
Dr. Teh Ban Hup
Dr. Ahmad Nizar
One a Physician, the other a Paediatrician. But both brilliant photographers. Go feast your eyes.
Links to the Doctors Personal Pages have been updated accordingly. If there are any other doctor photographers out there with websites you’d like to share, please let us know.

***Update*** I have decided to discontinue the Dental Heroes User Link Feed indefinitely. I found not only that it wasn’t very popular, but the submissions were not what I was looking for. Instead of having people submit their sites, I was looking for specific posts or specialized resources that are beneficial for the Dental Heroes audience in some way. In any event, thanks to those who submitted in the past, and perhaps I’ll bring back the user link feed one day.
Hello! Welcome to the Dental Heroes User Link Feed. The User Link Feed is a place where anyone can submit links with a short description that they find useful to the Dental Heroes Community.

Dental Heroes Re-Design
You’ve probably noticed that in the last couple of days the site has begun to look a little different. I’ve started what I consider to be a “phased-redesign”. I know that’s typically not the best way to re-design a site, but there were some things I just couldn’t wait to change. I have a long way to go, but it’ll be well worth it. In the meantime, however, everything will remain fully-functional, and I will continue to write posts.
The reason for the re-design is really two-fold. (A) I want to create the capacity for growth. That won’t mean major changes, because my theme was solid, but it’ll require tweaks here and there. (B) I’m a designing fool, and constantly re-design my sites because I like the change...

Over the past several months the Dental Heroes blog has enjoyed significant growth and popularity within the dental community. It was not too long ago that Dental Heroes was a small side project of mine - slowly dying due to neglect. However, a burst of inspiration revived Dental Heroes, and turned what was a passing thought into a vision for the future.
As readership has grown over the past several months, I’ve discovered that a significant number of visitors are interested in engaging with Dental Heroes on a regular basis, but simply aren’t aware of all the ways they can do this. Hopefully, this post will help those of you who would like to contribute to the Dental Heroes Community, but just don’t know how.

I have updated the Get Recent Comments plug-in and the latest version allows one to “group” comments by post, which is what I have done. You can now see the Recent comments in the right side bar are now more organised and makes for better reading.
I’ll probably upgrade to Wordpress 2.6 over the next couple of weeks when I find the time. I managed to do so for The Palmdoc Chronicles and find that the latest version has considerable advantages over the older one I am using (2.3). In fact “automatic” plug-in download and updating is a fantastic time-saver!

Several days ago, prior to writing the post on how to “Find a Dental Plan in 6 Steps,” I had a conversation with my parents about the rising costs of dental care. My parents are both retired, in their mid-fifties, and do not have dental insurance. Prior to retirement, both had excellent dental insurance benefits. However, they feel at this point that their current dental care needs do not justify the expense associated with paying for dental insurance.
While there are certainly differing opinions about what is in their best interests, I tend to think that since they can afford it, dental insurance is an intelligent decision. Why? Well, at their age, or any age for that matter, it’s a good idea to prepare for the unexpected. Unfortunately, being caught unprepared for a dental emergenc...

I’ve been poking around css website galleries and various web design showcases around the web for quite some time now. If you are a web designer, this is a fantastic way to gain some real inspiration and stay on top of the latest design trends. Even if you have no inclination to be a designer and just want to see some beautiful sites, I recommend checking them out from time to time. A few of my favorites that I frequent are:

CssMania.com
Designsnack.com
webcreme.com

Dentalheroes Featured
I’ve been hard at work tweaking the Dental Heroes design for several weeks now, and I still have a ways to go. My goal is to provide an aesthetically-appealing site, but with great functionality as well. I think I’m well on my way, and I hope you find it to be both of those things. Recently, I’...

To Floss or Not to Floss?

Flossing Poll Results
In a recent poll, I asked Dental Heroes readers if they floss on a daily basis? Out of 21 responses(hey, we’re new), 13 people said “no” they don’t floss everyday. That means, you guessed it, 8 people said “yes” they do floss everyday. Of course the sample size was much too small to serve as an accurate predictor of a trend, I can only go by the numbers seen in the Dental Heroes poll. As such, it appears as though flossing is not popular among my readers.

I Hate Flossing
It’s OK. I hate flossing too. In fact, I don’t floss. That’s right, I don’t floss. Instead, I use interdental cleaners everyday. The interdental cleaners I use are much like those I wrote about in the Dr. Collins Interdental Cleaner review....

This morning, I noticed that I couldn’t access the MMR Forums using Streamyx. In fact Streamyx the past one week has been pretty flaky and access to various sites has been either slow or impossible. I think Streamyx once again has messed up something on their end and cannot route http requests correctly.
One quick fix is to use a proxy, i.e. you surf to the website you want via another gateway. There are various open proxies available but the easiest is to use portals like HideMyAss. Just enter forum.malaysianmedicine.com in the box and click on the HideMyAss button and you should be able to surf to the MMR forums. After you login, you should quickly click on the MMR banner or else you will have to re-enter the forum URL in HideMyAss as the re-direction takes you back to HideMyAss. B...

I don’t know how accurate Alexa ranking is these days since it relies on data from users (largely IE) who have the Alexa toolbar installed. There are a significant number of non-IE users, and with the launch of the very fast Firefox 3, I think the Firefox base will be growing more.

is an interesting letter to Malaysiakini by Dr. Hsu Dar Ren who is a medical doctor (hat tip to dranony for pointing it out). It delves with how different our neighbours south of the causeway value human resources. I am not surprised at the aggressiveness of SingHealth in going overseas and actively recruiting bright young medical and science talent. We on the other hand are stymied by ethnic based policies, red tape and what not. The “build ‘em and they will come” just won’t work if the environment and policies are not right. We already mentioned this in the Valley of the Ghosts post. In case you missed it, here’s an interesting blog post by Dr. Chua Soi Lek on The Malay Supremacy: Should it continue?. Malaysia has come a long way since independence in 1957. We should be able to discuss things in a sensible and rational manner. Dr. Chua blogging about Ketuanan Melayu. Who would have imagined!

While updating the MMR recently, the blogroll was messed up and had to be re-categorized. That reminds me, I still haven’t finished re-categorizing the old blogposts. Anyway, I have updated the blogroll with a few new blogs that have shifted — Sarah, Suet May and Nyrac. Have also moved Jess and Genie to the Doctor Blogroll. I have also removed some dead blogs.

We’re still in the midst of recategorising old posts. We temporarily turned of the Subscribe by email function whereby you get notified by email of new posts since recategorisation results in subscribers being notified of old posts.
You might notice there are new Section categories: Ethics (for issues dealing with medical ethics), Inspiring (if it’s something we really think is inspirational), Quiz (for the ‘Whazzit’ type of post). We also put in Digg as an author category since a fair number of posts are from there. As usual, we put in new authors who contribute to the MMR so welcome Yenjai and Dranony, whom we hope will be able to contribute more posts.
I am also updating my old Wordpress plugins. I have put back Gravatars in the Recent Comments section (in the ri...

I’ll be performing a Wordpress upgrade shortly. It’s about time as we are still on WP 2.1.x whereas the latest version is 2.32
I have 43 plugins (!) so I trust (hope) the upgrade will go smoothly. I am in the process of backing up everything and in a while, the site will go down. Hopefully briefly!
Update commencing about 3:30 pm……
Upgrade finished 4:27 pm
There was a major scare, as i encountered this error and the website could not load:

Astute readers will have noticed that there's not much going on here anyway. I've had immigration hassles (done with, I hope), health problems (fixed, I think) and I'm waaaaaaaaaayyyyy behind at work. I need a couple months' absolute tunnel vision: publish or perish, publish or perish, publish or perish. So, no blogging for me, and I won't be reading much except research papers either. I'll copy all my science/OA RSS feeds to Google Reader (which unlike Bloglines doesn't stop caching at 200) and try to catch up on the backlog over whatever Christmas break I get.

Speaking of Organ Donation, I just realised that the National Transplant Resources Centre has a relatively new website called the Pusat Sumber Transplan Nasional. The website is mainly in BM with an Online Organ Donor Registration page. I am not very sure if the online registration works though as the website does not seem to be recently updated, with only one post in its Forum! If you wish to sign up as an Organ Donor I suggest you contact the Pusat Transplan Nasional to inquire further. I have added the website to our Health Portals page.
I have had quite a few people ask me to let them know when I update my main site, What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes. Well, I update it a lot as there is a continual flow of interesting research pertinent to the topics I discuss on the site. So to help you find out what's new, I've put together a new blog, Updates to What they Don't Tell You About Diabetes where I track all significant changes. In the 9 days since I started this new blog, I've made 6 additions, including a new page. Until I wrote it all down, even I didn't realize how much work I put into this site.
I can't get rid of the unsightly space in the items with no description, because the "tagged by" is part of the %DESCRIPTION% variable. I won't be paying for this one if the customization doesn't improve. (It'll show up to 20 items, but I've set it to 5 because it's so clunky.) (Source: Open Reading Frame)

Why is this so hard? Argh. This one's not free but I'll happily pay for something that works.

Hoo boy, that's ugly. But it seems to work, and the tabs at the top are sorta nice -- you can separate feeds by category. (Not sure Simpy plays nice with that -- it's supposed to, but...) Oh, and there's a minimum width otherwise you get side-scrolling, don't like that. (Source: Open Reading Frame)

If you notice any broken links, outdated links or sites which you think should be included in the MMR, we would appreciate feedback.

Regarding the controversial issue of a Common qualifying exam for all foreign medical graduates, I have put up an Opinion Poll here to gather feedback from MMR readers.

Should there be a Common Qualifying Exam for Medical Graduates?

No. Leave things as status quo i.e. a Recognised colleges list, and a Qualifying exam only for those not in the list.

Yes, there should be a CQE for all foreign medical graduates but not local graduates

Yes, there should be a CQE for both local and foreign medical graduates

The Malaysian Association of Speech Language and Hearing which is the Professional body for Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists in Malaysia has a new website. I discovered the new link after checking up for Smileyes in the MMR Forums who had a question about Speech Therapists.
The society website is simple and neat and also displays the lists of current members and contact information. Speech therapy in Malaysia is a developing area and I think lately more people have become aware of the need for speech therapy.
The link in the MMR’s Professional Societies Page has been updated accordingly. (Source: Malaysian Medical Resources)

I noticed while using an old Dell PC at work that the formatting for the site in IE6 looks out again. The left column is myesteriously floating towards the centre. Sigh..
All my machines now currently run Firefox or IE7 so it is a pain checking to see if the theme works under IE6 as well.
Does anyone know if there is a tool to simulate viewing a page under IE6?
In the meantime, once again I suggest users upgrade to IE7 or even better switch to Firefox! Firefox is free, highly customisable and alot safer than Internet Explorer. (Source: Malaysian Medical Resources)

The other is a Google search box where you can search medicine.com.my
I have just added Epocrates Drug Search. This function allows you to look up drug information and the search will take you to Epocrates in a new window. Epocrates is a popular (the basic application is free) PDA drug reference application and the Epocrates folk have also made their database available via the WWW.
It does make the search box a little larger though, so tell me if you like it or hate it.

falls on May 8, but the event has already been launched locally with the creation of a dedicated portal to create awareness on the illness. MyTalasemia is a Malaysia Thalassaemia Vortal* which aims to be the prime source of information on Thalassaemia. The website also has a list of the various Thalassaemia support groups available.
*Vortal = Vertical Portal, a portal geared toward a specific niche audience with focused content
A commendable effort indeed by the Ministry of Health. But then another news report goes on to say:

Health authorities are taking bold measures to combat thalassaemia by urging couples who carry the faulty gene either not to marry or have children.

I have updated both the Student and Doctor blogrolls. Apologies to Acidulous whose link somehow went missing — have re-linked his blog which has been revamped recently to a purely clinical based blog. I have also added Amanda and Genie to the Student Blogroll.
George has moved house to his own domain name. The Doctor blogroll has also been updated with Eve, Chiam and Wong. Thank you Chiam for letting us know about your blog, and for the extra medical blog links. A warm welcome to all of you. (Source: Malaysian Medical Resources)

I have updated the State Health Department links (taken from the MOH website) in the Government Health and Medical Departments page. It is good to see nearly all the states (except Malacca) have their own State Health Department website. There is also a MMC page that can be found in the MOH Medical Practice Division. Well I managed to sort out Palmdoc’s boo-boo in deleting the Doctor Blogroll category — there were about 20 doctors’ blogs left in the Student’s Blogroll. Have also updated the list with the blog descriptions. Please do leave your feedback with us if:
1. Your blog has been mistakenly placed in the wrong section, or if you have graduated recently unbeknownst to us.

My host just upgraded the PHP to 5.x and we right away had problems - could not access the Plugins page and trying to post something gave an error. Googling around, one of the plugins we us “Adhesive” (which makes posts sticky) is not compatible. Deleted it and things are mostly alright except for a blank page which happens after a Save or Post. So will be trying to upgrade WP and see. Bear with us.

Upgrade all done. Disabled Google Sitemaps plugin as it seemed to be causing backend memory problems when trying to post. Hopefully no other problems. If you spot anything broken, drop us a line.

Added the Mount Miriam Hospital web page to the MMR’s Private hospital Website links. Mount Miriam is a well known Cancer Centre in Penang, Malaysia.
Whilst it is in the “private sector” links, Mt Miriam was set up as a not for profit organisation and depends on donations
The MMR’s Directory has also been updated with fresh links (the old ones were not working) to the Malaysian Medical and Health Directory search engines. The MMHD allows you to search for Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Establishments (Source: Malaysian Medical Resources)
