These are my recent science picks, including my latest contributions to spectroscopyNOW.com

Drug testing – A simple analytical approach to identifying drugs of abuse would be a boon to forensic scientists and law enforcement agencies. A collaboration between researchers in the US and Europe demonstrates how an assessment of different methods using chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry reveals that multivariate selectivity can take into account the degree of resolution between nominally unresolved peaks due to the presence of various drugs in a forensic sample and so allow quicker identification.
Solar fullerenes – Sheffield's David Lidzey working with Athene Donald of the University of Cambridge and experts from Cardiff University and Nick Terrill at the Diamond Lig...

By Tad DeHavenTea partiers take note: at the forefront of any effort to reduce the size of the federal government should be the devolvement of federal programs to the states. Achieving this may seem like mission impossible given the states’ addiction to federal money. However, there are signs that the idea of returning the relationship between the federal government and the states to that which the Founders prescribed is starting to gain some currency.
On Friday, the president of the Utah Senate and the speaker of the Utah House of Representatives penned an op-ed in the Washington Post calling for the federal government to begin the devolution process. The authors want the states to have the right to opt out of federal programs and allow the states to keep the taxes their residents s...

My sponsor gave me the following 10th and 11th step inventory and told me to write it out every evening before I go to bed.
The Twelve Nightly Spiritually Focusing Questions
1. Was I resentful?
2. Was I selfish?
3. Was I dishonest?
4. Was I afraid?
5. Do I owe an apology? Who did I help today?
6. What have I kept secret?
7. Was I unkind? (cruel, harsh, unfeeling)
8. Was I unloving? (cold, unresponsive, indifferent)
9. What could I have done better? What am I grateful for today?
10. Was I thinking of myself most of the time?
11. Was I thinking of what I could do for others? Who needs my prayers today?
12. Was I thinking what I could pack into the stream of life?
But we are careful not to drift into worry, remorse, or morbid reflection, for that would diminish our usefulness to others. After...

In the past eight months, the unemployment rate has jumped from 7.2 percent to 10.2 percent. Here’s why.

Three trillion reasons to hope the Senate is not as fiscally reckless as their counterparts in the House on health care reform.

Obama a federalist? Not quite: “Not yet a year into his administration, Obama’s record on 10th Amendment issues is already clear: He’ll let the states have their way when their policies please blue team sensibilities and he’ll call in the feds when they don’t.” More here.

It’s time to get immigration reform right: “Republican leaders need to liberate themselves from the Lou Dobbs minority within their own ranks that will oppose any legalization. Democratic leaders need to face down their labor-unio...

Derived from Back To Basics - The Alcoholics Anonymous Beginners Meetings

“Please remember that, in order to remain spiritually fit we must be of service to other alcoholics.”
“We can think of no greater service than helping newcomers through the Twelve Steps so they, too, can find the spiritual solution to alcoholism.”
Today’s Daily Reflection;
“Without Unity, the heart of A.A. would cease to beat; …”
“The ability of Bill W. and Dr. Bob, working together and passing it on to other members, tells me that to give it away is to keep it.”
Passing what on? Giving what away? Whatever “it” is relates to unity, can you decide what “it” is?

God will tell you all that you need to know.
He will not always tell you all that you want to know.
These are a few simple suggestions for people who are willing to make an experiment.
You can discover for yourself the most important and practical thing any human being can ever learn - how to be in touch with God.
All that is needed is the willingness to try it honestly. Every person who has done this consistently and sincerely has found that it really works.
Before you begin, look over these fundamental points. They are true and are based on the experience of thousands of people.
1. God is alive. He always has been and He always will be.
2. God knows everything.
3. God can do anything.
4. God can be everywhere - all at the same time. (These are the important differences between God and ...

The Tenth Step Promises from the AA History Lovers Group at Yahoo!

We continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. (84:2)
We vigorously commenced this way of living as we cleaned up the past. (84:2)
We have entered the world of the Spirit. (84:2)
Love and tolerance of others is our code. (84:2)
We have ceased fighting anything or anyone even alcohol. (84:3)
For by this time sanity will have returned. (84:3)
We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. (84:3)
We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. (85:0)
We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of i...

The first sentence of today’s daily reflection. How true! Seemingly always in a state of frustration.

The second sentence also hits home, today… “With more to do than seemed possible, I fell further behind, no matter how hard I tried.”
It hasn’t been easy leaving someone that I was emotionally invested in for over forty years but peace of mind and sobriety transcend all else in my life now. One of the realities of this move has been the small task of getting “back on track.” New living arrangements, different travel times and execution along with simply getting adjusted brought about some confusion and a bit of mental chaos with any writing schedule I had.
The third “statement” in today’s reflection is decidedly no longer true :)...
